Im so excited for this DLC, these units look incredible. It kinda makes the vanilla factions feel lacking now though, considering these new civs practically have more unique than basic units lmao. I hope they eventually update the original civs with more unique units as well like they have done already on multiple occasions,

I guess this can be sorta be done if they bother to make a civ with 2 aesthetics? You simply have Mexico, have it mesoamerican by the 1st 2 ages, and adopt to somehitng akin to their conquerers (Spain) at the latter 2.
tbh that would be "easily" possible IMO just make them like the atzecs in AoE 3 they have not one gunpowder or cavalry unit, but fast troops as an subsidiary, and their skull knights are so fucking strong with their armor and damage that they make it really balanced, also their arrow knights are great against artillery and are still "historically accurate" but the best thing is their fire place and their leader who can get like 4000 hp even without fire bonus and buffs all units besides him, which is really unique and cold be also implemented in AoE, i mean they already something like this with the japanese banner units, kinda
I would have added something like they receive a healing/defensive boost from being around buildings; maybe houses and castles, to reflect how they performed mostly on a defensive role when enemies invaded instead of just being recruited in high numbers for invasions and what not.
Thank you for useful information, but once again, let us not forget to praise you for all that effort you put into all the background scenery. Have you ever though (unless you do that already) of making dioramas? Because your "virtual dioramas" are amazing.

8:50 what alone makes them great is that - since they are not siege - can deal with anti-siege while having the characteristics of mangonels or bombards (aoe, longer range, siege damage). This unit alone makes me consider maining Japanese. Just having extra range on Chinese handcannoneers proves very useful and getting aoe and even more range seems like a no-brainer for me
My biggest complaint is the fact the hand cannoner isn't a teppo Ashigaru, which i guess given thefact most of the baseline AOE civs don't get arquebusiers it makes sense.
Exactly, hand cannons was the predecessor of Matchlock and obsoleted when firearms reached Japan, Japan should wielding guns exactly like the Rus or Ottoman do.
Well they did had Chinese handcannons since the time mongols invaded till the portugese came. But yeah, you nearly never see them, there only few pictures of them, because matchlock became so much more wide spread in Japan, then early handcannons ever were.

Onna-Bugeisha seem very Landsknecht-ish: they’re a great mix-in unit to add more DPS to your infantry (Samurai) very cheaply. Her damage per hit is bad but her attack rate is insane so her DPS is quite decent, and she has lots of extra range to let her attack much more reliably in a melee without having to path around allies as much. So they’re at their best right behind a frontline of Samurai, cheaply adding damage. Also she has an amazing dommy mommy voice.
Handcannon on stick tech the Japanese never used (they went straight to arquebus when the Portuguese arrived), not to mention mounted samurai with shields. God bless their research department.

“Bannerman" sounds so confusing, considering they had Chinese bannermen used to describe the Manchu 8 banners. Shoud've just used hatamoto, since they are already using so many Japanese names to begin with.
The only question I have is can you put a Yorishiro into a Tanegashima Gunsmith? I'm really scared of those ozutsus, on paper for the same total price (a lot more gold though), they look like grenadier on steroids, more health (160), more armor(4+3), double the range(6) and like 47 dmg with all upgrades? 35*(1+0.2chemistry+0.15banner). And on top of that, the gunsmith gives a free ticket/ozutsu every 30 sec ( 240 ressources/min for free). If the Japanese can pump them out at a rate of 5-6 per minute because of the yorishiro relic, I'm gonna start crying.
Also thought spears wouuld've been called Yari Ashigaru. Missed opportunity. Maybe they decided the name's were too similar for non Japanese fans.? Yari yumi
i dont like the round shield on samurai horse riders like a mongolian and the lenght of the swords, katanas would be cooler in my opinion or as an upgrade for attak speed, also the naginatas and yari spears looks like chinese weapons.. i hope theyll fix it
Id much rather have samurai be traditionally only mounted. As most were mounted units and instead have the base be yari ashigaru. Or at least tachi ashigaru. With their special ability to become a range unit with one attack every 30 or so seconds. With the mounted samurai, could go with the Date bulletproof armor set or maybe the shimazu gunners who wield the equivalent of shotguns to diversify them.
