The army value was almost twice as much for the Japanese player, that is what caused the steam roll He was heavily outnumbered and was way over extended. Just felt like he needed to chill in his base and let the 2 TC cook some more

I think the counter here was simple. make units. Myriad despite having a 30 villager lead just didn't seem to be making enough. A lot of it had to do with rallying them out piecemeal and losing them, but still. Make units + get a keep, to then get network of citadels. At that point men-at-arms + crossbow would have shredded
A keep costs you 8MAA or crossbows in resources + the villagers gathering stone are not gathering gold or food so the opportunity cost is even higher. Building a keep puts you many, many units behind in a game when you are already short on units.
Mounted Samurai + Onna Bugeisha is a strong combo for a while, but it is far from being broken and unbeatable. In this game Japanese player had almost double army value of the opponent by the moment of the fight because they stayed on 1 TC, intercepted a lot of reinforcements and saved on Stables. On equal resources Spearmen + Longbowmen will beat this. Later on Spearmen + MAAs + Mangonels, optionally with Crossbowmen depending on the percentage of Mounted Samurai. Or just mass Knights, generally any mixed composition can be countered by massing one unit from this composition. Chinese in particular can also keep up with Yorishiro production bonus using Imperial Officials if they want to compete in tempo.

@@chrisnewtownnsw Onna Bugeisha will evaporate Spearmen, because they have extra range so that more of them are attacking at the same time. Interestingly 1 Feudal Onna Bugeisha loses 1v1 to 1 Dark Age Spearman. The Spearmen are there specifically to keep Knights at a distance while other units prevent Onna Bugeisha from diving on Spearmen. This is why Spearmen need to keep moving back and forward to keep them alive to prevent Knights from joining the battle.
Ona only being defeated by landskeinet as chinese no other option you need to use handcanon or ness of beast with lancer or imperial guards or manggonel that the only way the lack is only of cost maybe
Spears will be shredded by the onas and Samurai in seconds. The Samurai deflect the first hit while the onas swing freely behind them. Once the spears are gone it's free game on the crossbows. Alternately you can send the onas to the spears and bring the knights around. The onas will shred the spears in seconds while the crossbows focus on the Samurai. The gap will be closed quickly and the crossbows overwhelmed.
As an English main, I can confirm that those mounted samurai are nearly unstoppable. Mounted samurai just flatten their counters. Like Drongo mentioned, the only thing to do is get up to gun powered units but it’s easier said than done. I’ve only pulled it off once.
Onna Bugeisha can't melt english MAA since they have 8 melee armor. They would do only 2 damage a pop... MAA + xbow was the right call, but he didn't have the mass
Army pop was 75 to 50 and the Du Du was using high-DPS units so the pop diff mattered even more. If Myriad hadn't trickled-in reinforcements earlier and hadn't floated over 1000 wood for like 5 minutes, army pops would have been more even and MAA+spear+xbow actually does decent against MSamurai+OB. Myriad also came forward into the mid-map before the last battle, which put him at a disadvantage because Du Du's army is much faster and can force a fight
I do this combo as a Japanese player, but top it off with the Nehan conversion buff, which makes the ona bugeisha even faster. The counter which I typically loose to is siege and gunpowder units. Ottomans are the worst D:
Won 5 games in a row last night in 2v2, my teammate using only royal knights and me using only ona-bugeisha, worked like a charm even against higher ranked opponents.
as chineese i have tried mass grenadier against this, its good, BUT zhuxi with their +1 range and 15% damage bonus really melt infantry and knight mobs, Support with some springs with rollertrigger and that was pretty good. Good dmg vs units and vs buildings too. Works in gold league i guess XD
Honestly I feel like if Myriad had rallied close to base way, WAY earlier and then sent spears/(cross)bows in groups of 6-7+, he would have just overwhelmed DuDu way before he could get a critical mass, let alone teched up to castle. Sending in stuff 1 at a time absolutely cost him the game.
This would be Samurai and Onas in that case backed up by Ona Musha in castle age. Anyone with any knowledge of the game won't go mounted Samurai against HRE.

TBF Myriad made a big mistake not having full melee armor upgrades against mass bugeisha. Extra 1 armor makes a huge difference against them. The answer to this comp might be knight + spear. Knights beat bugeisha on equal cost and spears helps them trade better against mounted samurai.
Landsknecht have no ranged armour and get absolutely shredded by Yumi archers with cheap cost and much faster movement speed. Once you kite the lands it's game over. There's a counter for everything.
also aoe4 world is say those melee units are only counter by archers and knights so knights front line archer cross bow back line yeah idk tough to deal with

Anything with a decent amount of melee armour handles onna bugeisha, so maa, particularly English maa should excel against them. Imo this is not an op combo. Red just made a myriad of mistakes
nah you can see combat simulator UA-cam vids where onna bugeisha fight maa and they still win. Maybe against English maa they may or may not win but if they did it would only be slightly better than a neutral trade
In the case of English, I think maa is the way to go. Other civs would have to rely on their own particular bonuses. Playing with them up against civs that get early knights for example has never felt good to me. Ranged units should work against them if they have a meatshield. It's not a straight-forward answer, and they can be a dangerous unit, but they're certainly not as op as Drongo suggests. This game was lost because red threw away all his reinforcements. Bugeisha trail off in the late game too, so if slightly better than neutral trades is all you can get, then it should be enough
Light infantry heavy cavalry is an obnoxious damage class combo, as you have few real overlapping counters. The best bet I can see is to have a tanky front line and bring counters for the heavy cavalry. Since generally damage is good against lightly armored units even without counter modifiers, but you aren't going to cost effectively trade with sams without anti-samurai units. Without tanky units to block off the Onna Bugeisha (Who would only do 2 damage to armor clad men at arms,) they are going to shred, as there are few survivable light units. So in a way, all fast attacking good general damage units sort of counter light, as they are awful against highly elevated armor. Musofadi warriors I remember when they had good base attack, as their attack speed was also pretty fast from what I remember.... Remember back when they got spammed? They were an anti heavy unit that had that dangerous combo of swing speed and damage, so they hit that natural "But we hit light too" band of attack speed. I feel like HRE, Ayu/Abba, and byzantines also have ways of hard countering this. Abbasid camels counter both JP unit types here, which is honestly really interesting.
in any rts where a>b>c>d you play as a. modern games are imbalanced on purpose because it is easier to make things imbalanced in a new way each patch than to try to balance a game where new content is still coming out (let alone balance it at all) so the easiest thing to do is play what is most broken atm

The combo wasn't really that strong, it was just a numbers game. By 17min Japanese had double the army size, and it literally stayed that way for the rest of the game.

Lantsneck definitely the best counter to this if you have access to it. Otherwise, archer and crossbow + walls should do it.
