What I was told that this kind of behavior that he exhibits is to tell you that he may be in heat and he doesn’t know if there are other turtles around there, so he’s just showing his ability to do things like that so a female could go and see how strong he is so he can meet.

That way the weight of the hammer is increased and it hits the nail with more force. Does that make sense? ❤ You and Tiptoe are amazing!

Respiratory has more to do with wet and humid more then cold germs spread with heat in the wild (africa) at night it gets down to freezing they are in burrows but can take abit of cold but what is more dangerous then cold is heat

Don't use nails, use screws. Also put some wood glue where the wood meets wood and the screws will press the glued wood together. The screws and glue will definitely add some strength to the materials.
He is trying to burrow.... a tortoise his age would be living about 6-10ft underground... hes probably really hot because he can't use a burrow to regulate his body temp

If I could make a recommendation, it would be to run 2x12 or 2x10 around the bottom of the wall and screw it on. That way, he can root at it all he wants, and you can easily replace it by unscrewing it. Plus, he wouldn't be able to break a 2x ever.
