Something I also really like about UA-cam is the ability to NOT immediately go live when you press Start Streaming in OBS. This allows you to preview your stream to yourself first before going live publicly, checking bitrate quality, delay, connection etc. ...it also helps when you accidentally misclicked Start Streaming when you wanted to record offline
Another feature that Charlie did not mention is the ability to schedule streams (up to a year from now). Charlie doesn't really use this since he just goes live whenever he wants to but creating a scheduled stream HELPS A LOT in terms of notifying and reminding your viewers about your stream. Scheduled streams notifies subscribers like an hour or half an hour before the stream starts and notifies again once the streamer goes live. Going live out of nowhere somehow reduces the chance of this notifications to work and I hope YT fixes that but scheduling your stream really helps.
One thing Charlie overlooked is the stream consistency from the viewer side. If you don't have good internet a UA-cam stream is waaay better than twitch
very good point. and i think having built in rewind and forward helps a lot with that as well. you can pause and let it buffer and then resume without having to "catch up" immediately
As a long term UA-cam denizen, I am very happy to see another major creator livestreaming regularly on the platform. I do think UA-cam would benefit from more emotes being integrated and developing a whole new recommendation system for streamers. I do however think twitch is too restricted, has too many ads, has a terrible app experience, and has a vastly inferior vod system. It seems like only some vods end up on that obscure vod tab on twitch. With UA-cam, they show up perfectly just like videos. And of course they don't have the rewind feature.

What makes Charlie apealing is the fact that he is so genuine. He's kind of an everyman. He looks at things from multiple perspectives, forms an oppinion, and lays it all out for us as the viewer. This allows us to form an oppinion of our own when it comes to toppics like this. He doesn't deserve to be put on a pedestal because of this, but the sad reality is that Charlie is a breath of fresh air between most of the BS you see online nowadays.
It's the ever so chill attitude as well. Never have I had to reach for the volume down button on my keyboard within two seconds of opening one of his videos - unlike many youtubers
One thing I like about UA-cam streaming is that streamers can schedule their streams. So it pops up on the viewers subscribe tab. So it’s good for streamers with a schedule. Plus it also creates a waiting room for Chatters. But like Charlie said, it’s only good for people that are already subscribed, not for discoverability.
i value the scheduled stream thing a LOT because it helps with me being able to determine if i will be available to watch it or not, i really dont like randomly checking if people are live since i dont use notifications on anything since i dont want a million emails
just make some random relevant topical videos, make a video essay, make some funny edits etc. its really not that difficult. i dont get the ONLY streaming thing, like why limit yourself lol. twitch doesnt even give the option for discoverability like creating youtube videos does, 98% of twitch is people with 0 - 5 viewers and they have to keep going live all the time for nothing praying a bigger streamer will raid them or notice them.
I would really love to see UA-cam make their livestream theater mode better for desktop and mobile, imo that'd make the viewing experience a lot better

I really think if UA-cam focused on the streaming side of things, they could easily overtake Twitch. It really just seems UA-cam isn't that interested in streaming.
@iwannafunny5130 For me, that's just throwing money at something. Which I'm glad they are; and they seem to have strategized on who to get better than Mixer. But what I think they really need to do is focus on frequent updates. There are some basic quality of life changes (some mentioned in the video) that we've been asking for years, and they are still not here. Any great things about UA-cam streaming are just from the video side of things (ad density, thumbnails). They just really need to focus on streaming, and it can easily surpass Twitch; but I think overall, they're just focused on the video side of things.
My personal take is that UA-cam will never be the dominant streaming platform, at least not for anything outside of official government or world events. I don’t know about you guys, maybe it’s just me, but I use UA-cam for Videos and I (don’t anymore) use Twitch for streams. It’s more fundamental than the actual creator itself, it’s like playing pc games on a tv. Like in general there is no difference, but I won’t do it
Another thing you didn’t mention: The ads themselves on UA-cam are far less frequent and intrusive to the streaming experience in comparison to Twitch. Like, Twitch will literally shove 4 ads at a time down your throat every few minutes. It’s a genuine turn-off for me, and I have no clue how people don’t take issue with this more.

Lixian also used to stream frequently and his community had their own stuff, but I think Charlie is talking more about pogs and kappas. Like, if you post a pog ANYWHERE in Twitch, people will know what you're talking about, while if I say "EnJOy YoUR sWEEt Emote! ENJOY THEM" outside Lixian's chat, no one will know what I'm talking about.
But that was likely isolated to GT's community rather than all of YT... I remember I used to watch Etika's streams and his community felt quite different compared to Matpat's.

There are people I want to watch that are only on Twtich but I stopped watching because the chat culture has evolved into something I'm just not a fan of, like when streamers use TTS to read bit messages. I already thought bits were a bit intrusive but it's so annoying for the streamer to be talking about something, having an interesting conversation and then they have to either stop or talk over the random donation message forcing in their joke. There are some chats on YT I'm not big on, but that's bc of the culture specific to that streamer (even if I like the streamer), but this also means every streamer having a different feel in the chat adds to the streamer's identity imo.
On his UA-cam streams his chat is just filled with “lol” “lmao” and fart jokes it’s so childish and boring. It feels like his twitch viewers were drowned out by his UA-cam subs
This, exactly this! The reason I never got into to Twitch is because I wasn't vibing with that specific culture but it's so tight-knit that as a newcomer you can't imagine fostering your own thing. It's either hop on the bandwagon or f*ck off. So while the Twitch culture and the whole "we are like a family"-thing is one the platforms biggest pros it can at times be a huge con too, it's like an organically grown gatekeeper.

What I’ve found helps on UA-cam is scheduling your streams. The upcoming stream gets pushed out giving your subscribers and new ppl a chance to turn on notifications for those specific streams.
For me, as a UA-cam viewer, it's easier and more likely to join a stream on the same platform I'm used to and already have an account, than going to Twitch logging in and trying to find your stream due to the fact that I've never been a streaming or Twitch guy to be honest
Doesn't help that twitch automatically logs you out over time too. If you haven't used it in a while, you gotta sign in... Oh two factor authentication? Ugh it's just always a pain.

Honestly same, I tried twitch but it was overwhelming. All my favorite streamers are also major YTbrs anyway; Vaush / Destiny / Laowhy /SerpentZa / NFKZRZ / etc., and I’m well aware of all the twitch emotes and inside jokes but YT feels more personal idk
as far as memberships go, being in the vtuber community has shown me that they are more individualistic than sub's from twitch. they're more like tightknit communities for their respective streamers, than a general means of support. if you're in the know its very identifiable. Investigators for Ame's members, Chumbuds for Gura, Irystocrats for Irys, ect. it functions more as a mini patreon. or at least thast what its used for by them.
This. It also gives you access to the membership tab where we can get extra perks. And even if you don’t support, the community tab is just as good. No point in using other social media platforms.
It's insane that youtube bitrate is higher and on lower end devices the experience is still smoother just because of youtube's transcoding, which twitch only offers to partners and trickles down to affiliates.

I'm very glad you brought up the rewind component. It is singlehandedly why I will always prefer watching esports (specifically RLCS) on youtube when they go live. It allows me to multitask since I don't have to constantly be glued to the screen in fear that I'll miss a big play or moment. On twitch you can still go back but the process is tedious as hell while on youtube you can do it with a press of the left arrow key on your keyboard.

There's literally a function for having messages held for a few seconds during streams. Instead of holding the message in purgatory before it comes in you set the purgatory between their messages so that chat can't be overwhelmingly spammed.

Honestly you made this video at a perfect time for me, kinda crazy. This is the exact question ive been asking others what i should do. You kinda solidified UA-cam pretty well for me ngl. Especially since I wont be streaming daily, and wanna do event based streams.
As a person who has streamed on twitch and youtube, I found that you get the most interactions as a new streamer with "playing with viewers" tag on. I used to do a smash bros arena every 2 days for new people to come in and follow and for a 3 months, I gained up to 100 followers. Then I looked at a video telling me that youtube was a better option and friends told me to check out youtube as well and I thought why not give it a try. I had less than half of my audience follow my transfer to youtube and twitch deleted my acc too (oddly enough, idk why. I didn't have a contract). UA-cam was a little slower than twitch but sometimes if you have the right idea, you might spark something. I made a stream of doing a smash bros tournament with all the amiibos I had trained on twitch, edited it down, and went from averaging 50s to 300 views, then getting this 5k view video which was way better than anything I've gotten from twitch. Safe to say I found my place on youtube

Just wanna say that for the ability to go back on a stream, the streamer has to make sure the Enable DVR button is on in the UA-cam live dashboard (which, smartly, is on by default), but there are streamers that turned this off and with it off, the ability to rewind a stream is taken off. As to why some streamers turn this off, I imagine it's so that the stream will always be up to the current moment instead of lagged behind cos when a viewer watches a stream and it buffers because of their bad connection, when the stream reconnects, the stream continues where the viewer was left off so the viewer then would be lagged behind in the stream even though chat was moving according to the current time of the stream itself, with the Enable DVR button off, when the viewer reconnects to the stream, the stream would jump to the current moment of the stream itself of being lagged behind. This is my theory as to why some streamers turn it off, I myself always enable the DVR cos the ability to rewind a stream while it's live is just easy access for the viewers too, plus, if they wanna get back to current, just click the "Live" part in the scrubber and you'll be jumped to the current moment of the stream.
I've seen 2 streamers specifically turn this feature off to test how the experience is for a stream or two. The viewers hated it and they immediately turned the feature back on. The reason for turning it off: "we streamers don't like seeing chat comments from stuff that happened a while ago". So it's really a selfish thing for the streamers to have a clean current chat full of up to date chatting. The best thing for viewing experience is to give people the option of watching live, or rewinding a bit to what they missed, and most people with a brain know to not chat about old stuff if they are rewinded by like an hour.
I definitely get the feel of a stream needing to be unique. If you can get the same info on one stream as you can in another then people might just not always watch or opt to watch a normal video that’s shorter.
Something I think is important to note. Because of UA-cam primarily being a vod service it has a robust comment culture rather than chat culture. And because of that I think live streams “live” longer and have continued conversation around it because people watch the archive rather than watch it live including me. I watch every H3 podcast but I don’t like missing anything and they’re all live so I can either wait until it’s done and watch it or I have the benefit of rewinding it to the beginning while its live and then when I have to leave i can pick up where I left off. Additionally UA-cam has really emphasized, at least in my algorithm, showing lesser known less viewed videos which include live streams. I listen to a lot of music and often get recommended brand new music from relatively unknown artists all the time and find new music that way. That also applies to podcast. While I don’t often watch new podcasts because I’m a creature of habit I think it’s nice to know their podcasts are at least getting a chance to get seen in recommendations when they have little to no views.
@@TheBenSandersSame here. I've been recommended videos with less than 100 views multiple times in the last few months. I don't usually watch them because I'm not interested, but it's nice to get recommended stuff from smaller creators.
I do notice as some who sometimes watches both Twitch and UA-cam streams, UA-camrs who streams a lot or constantly do form a certain climate. Markipliers is a great example where the fans make jokes from past and current videos. I do get your steam notifs but they are often delayed. Same with anyone I have the bell on for.
One of the few positive things about Twitch is live discoverability and even that is awful for small streamers. When you don't have many viewers, you're pushed to the very bottom of the list and you're effectively invisible. When I switched to Twitch, 99% of my chatters still found me through UA-cam. Offline discoverability on UA-cam usually hard carries small streamers imo
I just want to jump in here on the discoverability side, as someone who is a "nobody" streamer and been trying this for years on both platforms. My twitch was a graveyard of people stopping by, 0-2 views on a 10 hour span. Here on YT, I average 20 views per stream and I usually go for 3 hours. Now these are some small numbers but its a literal 1000% view count boost. I honestly see YT as a better growth platform especially if you also make vids, music, and other content. Just my two cents from a tiny blip in the streaming space.
Vtuber chats tend to have a distinct culture from my experience. It's still ridiculously hard to read, but there'e still a culture with inside jokes and such. It's likely due to how tight-knit the Vtuber community is, and how if you watch one Vtuber, you're likely to watch others as well.
Not just vtuber, most famous UA-cam streamers also have that. Charlie just changed his platform, ofc there's always new people that didn't know the hivemind of the livechat yet.
I don't know. In my experience vtuber chat mostly have inside jokes due to streamer interactions with other streamers and a small circle of chatters that constantly give superchats. It's isn't always the case when said vtuber isn't so big. In my experience, Twitch gives chatters more personality, so even they don't give much, they'll have an identity in chat.
The notifications on UA-cam used to be a lot worse. Membership streams used to not get any notifications at all. Now they seem to be sent more often. It never made sense to me why they were so broken specially for paid content.

UA-cam needs their own live tab. They have home, subscriptions, shorts, and library. How do they not have a dedicated live tab for streamers and browse catalogue for games?
For UA-cam, you have to add an add-on to your browser to fix the emote issue. Nairo has this on his channel, and it is amazing. Plus, there is a streaming mode add on too which fixes the video and chat placement format.
The idea of editing a thumbnail turned out very good. A lot of times I just check a video or stream because of the thumbnail. I also know ppl prepare thumbnails in Photoshop for regular streams. It makes it look a little more professional ngl

As someone that has never cared about chat, Twitch has seemed vastly inferior to UA-cam for many years now. Watching the NFL on UA-cam and Twitch really sealed it, being able to rewind, slow down, fast forward and pause the stream is way more important than chat to me.
Meh. To each their own. Personally the entire fun of watching someone play video games live is to interact with the content in chat and talk to other people in chat and just BS around and have a good time. Twitch has clips and VODs. I've never felt I need or want to rewind a stream ever. If there's a moment I want to rewatch I make a clip of it. UA-cam's layout for live content is just disgusting compared to Twitch IMO. The stream should cover the majority of the screen and chat should be longer vertically. Also Theater mode doesn't work properly with UA-cam Live which is another deterrent for me. I like to put streams in theater mode on Twitch and have chat open or close it. UA-cam's layout for finding new streams and checking who that you follow is Live is awful. Navigation and UI is honestly the biggest thing holding UA-cam back. They just refuse to create a separate UI for Live streaming and finding Live content. On Twitch if I want to check who I usually watch is Live I can either click "following" at the top or check the icons on the left nav bar and hover over them to see what they are streaming. Twitch's layout is entirely centered around finding the content you want as quickyl and seamlessly as possible. Say Im getting bored of a stream or the stream ends? 1 click on the side nav bar and I'm on another stream I follow. UA-cam's rewind, slow down, fast forward and pause features aren't enough to make me use it over Twitch. In my opinion what's the point of watching someone stream video games Live if I can't interact with them or engage in a chat and meme and BS about and use emotes from other channels I'm subscribed/have a membership to.
My conspiracy theory is that UA-cam has purposefully designed chat to be unreadable so as to encourage viewers to spend money so the streamer is able to read their message

Didn't expect I'd see Charlie make a video like this but honestly I like Twitch and UA-cam for their own reasons but I wish there was a way to mix both.
Something I've noticed with youtube streams is if you schedule them in advance a lot of people will join them and try to talk to you in live chat. Even though it says at the bottom left that the video isn't live for X Days and Hours. I really do think youtube does a poor job of communicating streams. But now that someone big like charlie is here maybe youtube will listen and make changes to improve the streaming side.
another thing about memberships that he didn't mention, is that membership emotes can only be used in that specific streamer's chat, which really limits their use, whereas on twitch, you can use subscription emotes in any chat, allowing them to function as mini advertisements for a streamer and encourages better emotes overall, since obviously you'd want your paid emotes to look as good as possible since you never know who will see them
When I tried streaming on Twitch I felt like it was a Starfield planet, on YT it feels like I at least get a few people to watch, for example, I streamed Lies of P today and had a total of 22 1/2 hours of watchtime, which for me is a lot. Twitch I feel like I'm just constantly talking to myself with no hope of getting someone to watch what I'm doing.
As a user to me YT is like an old but lived in and comfortable home vs Twitch which feels more like a trip to a foreign and exotic country where nobody speaks my language, everyone worships some weird gods and the laws are so strange and difficult to understand, you never know whether you're gonna be arrested for looking at a portrait of their "Dear Leader" the wrong way and also no maps around or anyone you can ask for directions. Every time I tried to watch something on Twitch I felt extremely uncomfortable and frustrated. That whole "culture" they talk about, it is definitely not for me. 😆

UA-cam isn't going to fix their chat because it encourages people to super chat. If you don't super chat on UA-cam there's no way you're going to get noticed because of the endless stream of chats coming in

I started out doing YT lives and Charlie is right its so hard to get people into your stream. I love Charlie's streams. They are so silly and goofy, and just a chill, friendly good time. I am glad I get to see some streams here on YT. I just wish they would upgrade their chat and emotes. Some Vtubers do have specific chat cultures however. It can be done but it requires subs so you can create more emotes, but they are only specific to that channel. We have no Pepe.

Never really thought about it since I don't really use Twitch, but chat culture actually is really something I love that I've really only seen in a handful of streamers here like NairoMK. But, funny enough, YT did actually used to have something similar to Twitch prime, but instead it was a free superchat. I wish they at least brought that back since it was nice to use even if only once a month.
I like Twitch's Thumbnail approach much better tbh. It shows you what's actually happening on the stream, which further adds to the discoverability. Makes it easier to find what you would like to see.

Charlie doesn't really use this since he just goes live whenever he wants to but creating a scheduled stream HELPS A LOT in terms of notifying and reminding your viewers about your stream. Scheduled streams notifies subscribers like an hour or half an hour before the stream starts and notifies again once the streamer goes live. Going live out of nowhere somehow reduces the chance of this notifications to work and I hope YT fixes that but scheduling your stream really helps.

Twitch has a schedule. I don't think it's used very often nor does it give the advanced notifs you mentioned, but it is there.
if you have a following somewhere, you could make "Im streaming at ___, come join!" or something as a post so that'll notify some people.

One thing Charlie overlooked is the stream consistency from the viewer side. If you don't have good internet a UA-cam stream is waaay better than twitch

As a long term UA-cam denizen, I am very happy to see another major creator livestreaming regularly on the platform. I do think UA-cam would benefit from more emotes being integrated and developing a whole new recommendation system for streamers. I do however think twitch is too restricted, has too many ads, has a terrible app experience, and has a vastly inferior vod system. It seems like only some vods end up on that obscure vod tab on twitch. With UA-cam, they show up perfectly just like videos. And of course they don't have the rewind feature.
Getting those "face jump scares" as thumbnails for Charlie's stream is something that makes my day just a little better

Charlie's fanbase ability to give credit for the most trivial things. What he does here should be the norm. There is no need to put him on a pedestal.
What makes Charlie apealing is the fact that he is so genuine. He's kind of an everyman. He looks at things from multiple perspectives, forms an oppinion, and lays it all out for us as the viewer. This allows us to form an oppinion of our own when it comes to toppics like this. He doesn't deserve to be put on a pedestal because of this, but the sad reality is that Charlie is a breath of fresh air between most of the BS you see online nowadays.

It makes chat much easier to read, it's easier to read something that stops periodically than something that's constantly scrolling up.
One thing I like about UA-cam streaming is that streamers can schedule their streams. So it pops up on the viewers subscribe tab. So it’s good for streamers with a schedule. Plus it also creates a waiting room for Chatters. But like Charlie said, it’s only good for people that are already subscribed, not for discoverability.

just make some random relevant topical videos, make a video essay, make some funny edits etc. its really not that difficult. i dont get the ONLY streaming thing, like why limit yourself lol. twitch doesnt even give the option for discoverability like creating youtube videos does, 98% of twitch is people with 0 - 5 viewers and they have to keep going live all the time for nothing praying a bigger streamer will raid them or notice them.

But what I think they really need to do is focus on frequent updates. There are some basic quality of life changes (some mentioned in the video) that we've been asking for years, and they are still not here.
Any great things about UA-cam streaming are just from the video side of things (ad density, thumbnails). They just really need to focus on streaming, and it can easily surpass Twitch; but I think overall, they're just focused on the video side of things.
My personal take is that UA-cam will never be the dominant streaming platform, at least not for anything outside of official government or world events.

When Game Theory was streaming daily. There was absolutely a chat culture. It was full of inside jokes and chat specific memes. I miss those days.

There are people I want to watch that are only on Twtich but I stopped watching because the chat culture has evolved into something I'm just not a fan of, like when streamers use TTS to read bit messages. I already thought bits were a bit intrusive but it's so annoying for the streamer to be talking about something, having an interesting conversation and then they have to either stop or talk over the random donation message forcing in their joke. There are some chats on YT I'm not big on, but that's bc of the culture specific to that streamer (even if I like the streamer), but this also means every streamer having a different feel in the chat adds to the streamer's identity imo.
On his UA-cam streams his chat is just filled with “lol” “lmao” and fart jokes it’s so childish and boring. It feels like his twitch viewers were drowned out by his UA-cam subs

This, exactly this! The reason I never got into to Twitch is because I wasn't vibing with that specific culture but it's so tight-knit that as a newcomer you can't imagine fostering your own thing. It's either hop on the bandwagon or f*ck off. So while the Twitch culture and the whole "we are like a family"-thing is one the platforms biggest pros it can at times be a huge con too, it's like an organically grown gatekeeper.

What I’ve found helps on UA-cam is scheduling your streams. The upcoming stream gets pushed out giving your subscribers and new ppl a chance to turn on notifications for those specific streams.
For me, as a UA-cam viewer, it's easier and more likely to join a stream on the same platform I'm used to and already have an account, than going to Twitch logging in and trying to find your stream due to the fact that I've never been a streaming or Twitch guy to be honest

as far as memberships go, being in the vtuber community has shown me that they are more individualistic than sub's from twitch. they're more like tightknit communities for their respective streamers, than a general means of support. if you're in the know its very identifiable. Investigators for Ame's members, Chumbuds for Gura, Irystocrats for Irys, ect. it functions more as a mini patreon. or at least thast what its used for by them.
This. It also gives you access to the membership tab where we can get extra perks. And even if you don’t support, the community tab is just as good. No point in using other social media platforms.
Also instead of Twitch’s “culture”, UA-cam can have channel specific “cultures” like how when Ina leaves to do something chat spams cucumbers.

It's insane that youtube bitrate is higher and on lower end devices the experience is still smoother just because of youtube's transcoding, which twitch only offers to partners and trickles down to affiliates.

It’s not like UA-cam is profiting off it in any way. It changes nothing with monetization, it just actively makes the platform worse.
I'm very glad you brought up the rewind component. It is singlehandedly why I will always prefer watching esports (specifically RLCS) on youtube when they go live. It allows me to multitask since I don't have to constantly be glued to the screen in fear that I'll miss a big play or moment. On twitch you can still go back but the process is tedious as hell while on youtube you can do it with a press of the left arrow key on your keyboard.

There's literally a function for having messages held for a few seconds during streams. Instead of holding the message in purgatory before it comes in you set the purgatory between their messages so that chat can't be overwhelmingly spammed.
*As a UA-cam streamer. More folks watch the VOD of the stream than the actual stream. That’s where the discoverablity actually happens. Which is also why there’s no streaming culture. Since most audiences treat streams like other videos*

I’m all in on people streaming on UA-cam. The ads are SO MUCH better, you can pause and rewind any part you want. The VODS are MUCH better.
As a person who has streamed on twitch and youtube, I found that you get the most interactions as a new streamer with "playing with viewers" tag on. I used to do a smash bros arena every 2 days for new people to come in and follow and for a 3 months, I gained up to 100 followers. Then I looked at a video telling me that youtube was a better option and friends told me to check out youtube as well and I thought why not give it a try. I had less than half of my audience follow my transfer to youtube and twitch deleted my acc too (oddly enough, idk why. I didn't have a contract). UA-cam was a little slower than twitch but sometimes if you have the right idea, you might spark something. I made a stream of doing a smash bros tournament with all the amiibos I had trained on twitch, edited it down, and went from averaging 50s to 300 views, then getting this 5k view video which was way better than anything I've gotten from twitch.
Safe to say I found my place on youtube

Just wanna say that for the ability to go back on a stream, the streamer has to make sure the Enable DVR button is on in the UA-cam live dashboard (which, smartly, is on by default), but there are streamers that turned this off and with it off, the ability to rewind a stream is taken off.
As to why some streamers turn this off, I imagine it's so that the stream will always be up to the current moment instead of lagged behind cos when a viewer watches a stream and it buffers because of their bad connection, when the stream reconnects, the stream continues where the viewer was left off so the viewer then would be lagged behind in the stream even though chat was moving according to the current time of the stream itself, with the Enable DVR button off, when the viewer reconnects to the stream, the stream would jump to the current moment of the stream itself of being lagged behind.
This is my theory as to why some streamers turn it off, I myself always enable the DVR cos the ability to rewind a stream while it's live is just easy access for the viewers too, plus, if they wanna get back to current, just click the "Live" part in the scrubber and you'll be jumped to the current moment of the stream.
I've seen 2 streamers specifically turn this feature off to test how the experience is for a stream or two. The viewers hated it and they immediately turned the feature back on. The reason for turning it off: "we streamers don't like seeing chat comments from stuff that happened a while ago". So it's really a selfish thing for the streamers to have a clean current chat full of up to date chatting. The best thing for viewing experience is to give people the option of watching live, or rewinding a bit to what they missed, and most people with a brain know to not chat about old stuff if they are rewinded by like an hour.

I've been struggling with this issue for a while, i really wish youtube would update and make that final push for improvments for streamers.
I definitely get the feel of a stream needing to be unique. If you can get the same info on one stream as you can in another then people might just not always watch or opt to watch a normal video that’s shorter.
Something I think is important to note. Because of UA-cam primarily being a vod service it has a robust comment culture rather than chat culture. And because of that I think live streams “live” longer and have continued conversation around it because people watch the archive rather than watch it live including me. I watch every H3 podcast but I don’t like missing anything and they’re all live so I can either wait until it’s done and watch it or I have the benefit of rewinding it to the beginning while its live and then when I have to leave i can pick up where I left off. Additionally UA-cam has really emphasized, at least in my algorithm, showing lesser known less viewed videos which include live streams. I listen to a lot of music and often get recommended brand new music from relatively unknown artists all the time and find new music that way. That also applies to podcast. While I don’t often watch new podcasts because I’m a creature of habit I think it’s nice to know their podcasts are at least getting a chance to get seen in recommendations when they have little to no views.
To the point of lesser viewed videos. I have noticed as well UA-cam recommending me smaller creators recently.

I do notice as some who sometimes watches both Twitch and UA-cam streams, UA-camrs who streams a lot or constantly do form a certain climate. Markipliers is a great example where the fans make jokes from past and current videos.

One of the few positive things about Twitch is live discoverability and even that is awful for small streamers. When you don't have many viewers, you're pushed to the very bottom of the list and you're effectively invisible. When I switched to Twitch, 99% of my chatters still found me through UA-cam. Offline discoverability on UA-cam usually hard carries small streamers imo
I just want to jump in here on the discoverability side, as someone who is a "nobody" streamer and been trying this for years on both platforms. My twitch was a graveyard of people stopping by, 0-2 views on a 10 hour span. Here on YT, I average 20 views per stream and I usually go for 3 hours. Now these are some small numbers but its a literal 1000% view count boost. I honestly see YT as a better growth platform especially if you also make vids, music, and other content. Just my two cents from a tiny blip in the streaming space.
Vtuber chats tend to have a distinct culture from my experience. It's still ridiculously hard to read, but there'e still a culture with inside jokes and such. It's likely due to how tight-knit the Vtuber community is, and how if you watch one Vtuber, you're likely to watch others as well.

I don't know. In my experience vtuber chat mostly have inside jokes due to streamer interactions with other streamers and a small circle of chatters that constantly give superchats. It's isn't always the case when said vtuber isn't so big. In my experience, Twitch gives chatters more personality, so even they don't give much, they'll have an identity in chat.
The notifications on UA-cam used to be a lot worse. Membership streams used to not get any notifications at all. Now they seem to be sent more often.
It never made sense to me why they were so broken specially for paid content.
This is honestly a very insightful video. Whether you stream or not, its good as a new viewer of either platform to have a better understanding of what to expect accessibility wise.

UA-cam needs their own live tab. They have home, subscriptions, shorts, and library. How do they not have a dedicated live tab for streamers and browse catalogue for games?

For UA-cam, you have to add an add-on to your browser to fix the emote issue. Nairo has this on his channel, and it is amazing. Plus, there is a streaming mode add on too which fixes the video and chat placement format.
The idea of editing a thumbnail turned out very good. A lot of times I just check a video or stream because of the thumbnail. I also know ppl prepare thumbnails in Photoshop for regular streams. It makes it look a little more professional ngl

As someone that has never cared about chat, Twitch has seemed vastly inferior to UA-cam for many years now. Watching the NFL on UA-cam and Twitch really sealed it, being able to rewind, slow down, fast forward and pause the stream is way more important than chat to me.

Meh. To each their own. Personally the entire fun of watching someone play video games live is to interact with the content in chat and talk to other people in chat and just BS around and have a good time. Twitch has clips and VODs. I've never felt I need or want to rewind a stream ever. If there's a moment I want to rewatch I make a clip of it. UA-cam's layout for live content is just disgusting compared to Twitch IMO. The stream should cover the majority of the screen and chat should be longer vertically. Also Theater mode doesn't work properly with UA-cam Live which is another deterrent for me. I like to put streams in theater mode on Twitch and have chat open or close it. UA-cam's layout for finding new streams and checking who that you follow is Live is awful. Navigation and UI is honestly the biggest thing holding UA-cam back. They just refuse to create a separate UI for Live streaming and finding Live content. On Twitch if I want to check who I usually watch is Live I can either click "following" at the top or check the icons on the left nav bar and hover over them to see what they are streaming. Twitch's layout is entirely centered around finding the content you want as quickyl and seamlessly as possible. Say Im getting bored of a stream or the stream ends? 1 click on the side nav bar and I'm on another stream I follow. UA-cam's rewind, slow down, fast forward and pause features aren't enough to make me use it over Twitch. In my opinion what's the point of watching someone stream video games Live if I can't interact with them or engage in a chat and meme and BS about and use emotes from other channels I'm subscribed/have a membership to.
My conspiracy theory is that UA-cam has purposefully designed chat to be unreadable so as to encourage viewers to spend money so the streamer is able to read their message
Being able to go back while watching the live, instead of going to the channel and looking for the vod, it's one thing I would like to see implemented on twitch

Something I've noticed with youtube streams is if you schedule them in advance a lot of people will join them and try to talk to you in live chat. Even though it says at the bottom left that the video isn't live for X Days and Hours. I really do think youtube does a poor job of communicating streams. another thing about memberships that he didn't mention, is that membership emotes can only be used in that specific streamer's chat, which really limits their use, whereas on twitch, you can use subscription emotes in any chat, allowing them to function as mini advertisements for a streamer and encourages better emotes overall, since obviously you'd want your paid emotes to look as good as possible since you never know who will see them

The best thing about UA-cam streaming is the lack of ads.
When I tried streaming on Twitch I felt like it was a Starfield planet, on YT it feels like I at least get a few people to watch, for example, I streamed Lies of P today and had a total of 22 1/2 hours of watchtime, which for me is a lot. Twitch I feel like I'm just constantly talking to myself with no hope of getting someone to watch what I'm doing.
As a user to me YT is like an old but lived in and comfortable home vs Twitch which feels more like a trip to a foreign and exotic country where nobody speaks my language, everyone worships some weird gods and the laws are so strange and difficult to understand, you never know whether you're gonna be arrested for looking at a portrait of their "Dear Leader" the wrong way and also no maps around or anyone you can ask for directions. Every time I tried to watch something on Twitch I felt extremely uncomfortable and frustrated. That whole "culture" they talk about, it is definitely not for me. 😆
The discoverability argument is really strange considering I watched a UA-cam essay on how only the top twitch streamers really get promoted because it's what makes the website the most money

One thing I do love about YT Streaming is the VODs are permanent with choice to private, unlist, or simply publish, in Twitch, it only lasts a few weeks.
Essentially youtube needs some UI designers to really buckle down and find out how to attract people to watch
coke was designed before refrigeration so it is best consumed warm as that is what it was designed to be. pepsi was designed after refrigeration and had it in mind when developing the soda. so warm coke and cold pepsi will taste similar compared to either both cold or warm.

UA-cam isn't going to fix their chat because it encourages people to super chat. If you don't super chat on UA-cam there's no way you're going to get noticed because of the endless stream of chats coming in
The idea that not having the same culture as twitch does is a bad thing is very silly to me. Twitch chats just being a constant flood of emote spam is not enjoyable

this could just be me but for years i always saw Twitch only for streaming and UA-cam was only meant for videos. I started out doing YT lives and Charlie is right its so hard to get people into your stream. Now im doing more videos then streams and its been way better to be found.. as always all love to you all :)
In the Portuguese version, the "Join" button says "Seja Membro", which translates to "Become a Member"
I love Charlie's streams. They are so silly and goofy, and just a chill, friendly good time. I am glad I get to see some streams here on YT. I just wish they would upgrade their chat and emotes. Some Vtubers do have specific chat cultures however. It can be done but it requires subs so you can create more emotes, but they are only specific to that channel. We have no Pepe.
I feel like Charlie is gonna lay some much needed groundwork for UA-cam streaming with his involvement

Well, I'm not sure what I'll do with this information, but it seems like very well presented. Good point about chat culture on what we can expect on UA-cam vs what Twitch sort of "made" for itself with better chat features plus the community.
the VOD part is incorrect, because it logs the chat it's an absolutely different, and preferable, method of watching missed streams because you can see and enjoy those chat reactions
the toxic twitch "culture" is the worst thing about the platform, they are just abusive to anyone who isn't a guy, i am kinda glad you switched to youtube, the platform isn't that good for chatting but you don't have to intract with/look at abusive comments

Never really thought about it since I don't really use Twitch, but chat culture actually is really something I love that I've really only seen in a handful of streamers here like NairoMK. But, funny enough, YT did actually used to have something similar to Twitch prime, but instead it was a free superchat. I wish they at least brought that back since it was nice to use even if only once a month.
I like Twitch's Thumbnail approach much better tbh. It shows you what's actually happening on the stream, which further adds to the discoverability. Makes it easier to find what you would like to see.
