- Some live footage of when the Beastie Boys were a punk band. A damn good one, too. This was back in 1980-something. You can find the whole set on UA-cam, this was just a song that hasn't been posted on its own yet. You should consider checking it out, it has a pretty good live version of Egg Raid on Mojo.
If you're looking to find more Beastie Boys punk stuff, look for the Polly Wog Stew EP, or the Aglio e Olio EP. Both are probably all you'll need to sate your Beastie-Punk needs.
The woman playing drums in the video is Kate Schellenbach. She's a founding member of the Beastie Boys.
Badass
and of Luscious Jackson!
I wonder what happened to her? I’ve always wondered
Beastie Girl? 👧
@@indiglo1971 Perfect!
Punk and hip hop back in early 80's is classified as underground music.
At time classic rock is mainstream. So many hip hop musician and punk musician play their music just at small street gigs. So they absolutely have relationship each others
Yes sir back in the early 80’s I had a relationship with EVERYONE. All the hip hop artist and all the punk rock artist. All of them would come in my club and play and come up. I am so happy I am able to pass off my club to my kids and they can come up the same way I did and be on the for front of new music like I was. Good bless music.
in europe is now like this. Punk is a culture and into punk there are a hip hop... not all of hip hop culture but a punk rap DIY rap ... and anticapitalist punk
Punk and Hip Hop goes together
Yes. Both are literally US folk music. Or they were before they became pop/mainstream in the mid 1980s through 2000s.
I saw the Beastie Boys in the late '80's with L7. Beastie Boys went full-on D.C./Baltimore straight-edge punk for most of the show. They kicked ass...
Beastie Girl!
Amazing to see where they started. Who would have ever thought they'd end up where they ended up from this?
I like this better honestly
Check out Mike D's first band the young aborigines..
@@serjtankian5474 If you prefer this high school band rubbish, to Check Your Head, Ill Communication and Hello Nasty, then the bar is low
Thank God this footage exists
Good job dude... well done! Reminds me of my youth.. great song
MCA looks like he should be playing in Joy Division.
Ahh joy division lol
MCA surprised me over the course of my life at how fucking nasty he can actually play his bass.
holy shit they looked so young
This is actually a pretty good song. They knew how to play their instruments
Both cords
@@b.csplatbriancross7062 lol
@Хорошо it's punk who cares if you can sing or not
Future Lucious Jackson member on drums
@@indomiepanggang4258 Exactly.
Aww baby beasties
That drummer ‘s got chops. Irreplaceable.
I love the Beastie Boys. Glad they found Hip Hop. Mike D doesn’t have a punk voice. I bought the License to I’ll album in 7th grade. My mom took it away from me. They’re my 8 year olds favorite band
I think it could've worked. He has a bit of John Lydon in his vocals
You can't sing I can't play, let's form a punk band. Uh, what part did you two not understand.........
I disagree He definitely has the voice
Definitely has the sound and voice especially for the early 80 punk and nyhc bands
@@stevelira52524 that's how so many of them started ya twat
Don't forget the Beasties side band D.F.L. kicked arse too. Great punk 😉
Love this!!!
Their dress was ahead of its time, they wouldn't look out of place today with the skater kids.
Mike D looks so cute in this video, xD
Lmao
Kate Schellenbach from Luscious Jackson banging out the drums!
They look like they’re in a hurry to get out of there
They gotta catch a bus.
wow, they were really good! And they didn't feel the need to look like punkers, it was all true punk attitude and punk music.
This is pretty much how all 80s hardcore bands dressed, jeans and T-shirt. Bands like minor threat, circle jerks, adolescents, bad brains, dead Kennedy’s, etc.The opposite of fashion punk
sounds kinda like flipper
Flipper mixed with Kraut. I hear a lot of Flipper in this set.
You can tell they already understood their progression
i thought this sucked. til it was stuck in my head all day. haha.
Dope drum beat
Kate from Luscious Jackson
Mike D started out in his own 4 piece band The Young Aborigines.
Just to make sure everyone knows this is a cover of a Joy Division song, and they just about nailed it.
There is no Joy Division song called "White Shadow"...
Shadowplay you mean?
It definitely IS NOT a cover of any Joy Division song.
Do your research before you post lies online ffs 😂
Probably you need to listen to joy division, before you talk.
😆
daaaaaaaamn
RIP
lol i love this
Holy crap Mike D sounds like a dying cat. Sure glad they changed up from punk. Luck for Schellenbach that it only took a few years for her the find a great band after she left. I've heard two versions....she left because she didn't like the new direction they were going to away from punk. The other was that she was booted for the same reason and that she didn't fit in anymore. Not sure which is true other than it was definitely due to moving on from punk.
Good start 😢hank hod you hit a nich
First rock group to use the term "Wack" in a song in 1983.
the scott & gary show was the fucking coolest
Apart from george of the jungle on drums, this is one of my all time favourite songs
Suck a big fat one. I like those George of the Jungle drums. She’s the most solid musician of them all.
A damn good one hahahahaha
lmao 0:33
Wow had mo idea that's crazy we named our car white shadow and it says it all over it lol
oui ça c bon
Fuck yeah
Having a punk spirit and philosophy does not imply wearing a crest on your head and always making the same music that the establishment has decided that to make punk music there is only one way and you should always do it the same. Pure bullshit.
Do it yourself and do it your way. That is punk, and that is being punk.
Truth, some people don't understand that there's "The punk movement" and that punk rock is only a piece of it.
oh my!😍🥰BB4L🍎
Rad
Where can i watch the full set? Cant find it on youtube
Where's the white shadow? Do you mean Ken Reeves? I would check Carver High first.
joy division was punk so beastie too
I love that the goddamn Beastie Boys are eclipsed in views on Jimmy’s channel by the Coneheads lmao
White shawdow
I'm old
You and me both!!LOL
Shure 330 ribbon stage mic? Where did they lift that from?
Look at the cheesy hearts and they sucked as a punk band and were earth moving as hip hop renegades
Is Ad Rock the guy on the guitar?
Yessir
ça me rappelle mes K7
Most people watching this have no fucking clue what the white shadow is
Jesus, how good is Rick Rubin at his job?
Kate is really Gene Krupa in essence.
How did they end up rapping?
id guess because that was becoming more popular during that time
They started rapping on accident, just joking around at parties. It took off so they went with it! My source: a friend of mine was good friends with Mike D’s mom.
Kate is solid…..
Whats he kvetching about?
I enjoy punk, but the Beasties were right to switch to Hip Hop than staying punk simply because they were better at it than their punk offerings which were mostly just ok
They got much better as a hardcore punk band later on. This is terrible though
Holy Snappers was pretty good
Little did the drummer know he'd be replaced by an 808
She’d
That’s a woman on drums. They later regretted getting rid of her
She's a very "mannish" women so I understand your mistake.
well, -she- went on to form Luscious Jackson, so I think she did ok.
@@smosh91 Never heard of them
Where was I when this happened?
You weren’t deep enough underground
This video had to be the early 80s. None of their punk shit really hit. They blew up when Rick Rubin got ahold of them and they produced License to Ill in like 86 or 87. They released some pretty interesting demos before that album dropped tho. A lot of people dont realise they were a punk band.
What year was this orginaly broadcast?
1984 valentine's day hence the hearts
What ep or album is this some from?
This is waaay before license to I'll.
Hmmmm ... Probably a good career move to become rappers instead,
Hahahahaha ya hahahahaha hahahahaha
Who’s the girl?
Mary Schellenbach, she was the Beasties' drummer in the early days. There's also video of her rapping with them when they were BARELY starting to gear towards rap
*Kate Schellenbach
They should have stuck with punk.
When you realize beastie boys was this weird
Punk vocalists are almost never good at singing. That's why they scream.
Proof:
Punk vocals are more than just melodic singing, it's about raw emotion. You're right, sometimes they do just scream, but it isn't real criticism because people can value the emotion of it over the conformity of a sequence of pretty sounding pitches. The value of good music transcends the simple auditory sounds one can produce.
...bacause you wear a black mask
Meh....
Absolute garbage haha. Whichever manager told them hey maybe try hip hop it's hot right now deserves a medal
I like the beastie boys. But this sounds truly terrible.
Truth seeker it's not the best recording but they were a great hardcore punk band
the recording and the song are great condition. both of you have no clue...
this may not been there kig but the rap beastie boys rock
go listen to "the fall" and shut the fuck up you dont know shit
@@aamarkhan7448 Really? did you see them live when Beastie Boys were a punk band? Where you even alive back in the early 80s in NYC?
Beasties did some respectable Metal/Punk. This ain’t it. Cool Vid tho.
music is good but voclas are bad even by punk standars , He just seems off and not angry enough
