Thank you to Madonna for introducing me to the Beastie Boys May 25th 1985 at Maple Leaf Gardens. 14 year old me is forever grateful.

OMG you're ancient !
playing your own gold record is gangster. finding out it's piano covers is HILARIOUS
and a ripoff if they sold it for thousands to some other guy finding its Barry Manalo lol
😂@@joemeli1605
John Densmore of the Doors has an almost identical story in his autobiography "Riders On The Storm". He discovered that the gold record for the Doors album "Waiting For The Sun" was actually a Rod McKuen album. 🤣🤣🤣
This is so interesting. I wonder if the platinum's are legit or not. I need every artist ever to have a certified record to play it lol. for science!
That is hilarious - and I think we have ourselves a legitimate juicy scandal.
All these decades, the RIAA has been laughing their asses off every time they spray paint another Gold record _du jour_ - "Yo - let's give Paula Abdul this Muppets Take Manhattan soundtrack! HAAA!!"
"What if she ever tries to play it?"
(Pause)
"Who's the new guy??"
😅
It's actually kind of crazy they never considered somebody (possibly while high) might notice the number of tracks.
I don't think they are actually dipped or plated in Real Gold / Platinum. They are just decorative symbols to represent the number of albums sold.
Ironically those award plaques are probably made from recording artists’ LPs who weren’t selling and wasting space in warehouses
I went to a Beastie Boys Concert and Madonna followed these legends @ San Diego State amphitheater in 1985. I was in the 10th grade. ✊🏽
Lol. Madonna didn’t follow them, they opened for her. 🤡
@@bdiaz6081 it was sarcasm…I’m a big Madonna supporter. Saw her 3 times as an adolescent.
Joe Franklin was the talk show host in Ghostbusters (1984) who asked Ray if he'd seen Elvis.
Thank you. I'll check it out.
Nice reference! Lol! Now I know exactly who he is. Wouldn’t have had a clue otherwise
I saw them in 1985 on Madonna’s Virgin Tour; and I had never heard that degree of booing in my life! At the time, no one had ever heard of Beastie Boys; and here are these three white boys running around the stage cursing! A year or so later they had one of the first #1 multi million selling rap albums in the country; and those same three white boys are now rap LEGENDS and are in the Rock and Roll HALL OF FAME! LOL…I guess it’s true what they say: Timing Is Everything!
Also, perseverance in the face of adversity!
Miss these guys. Hope they do more podcasts.
6:30 Beastie Boys should sample that whole gold record and make it platinum.
The Beastie Boys are retired.
Agreed, release the record. 👍👏

That whole description of Joe Franklin sounded like Conan's TV career 😂😂
😅8😮⁸😮😮
Yep. Happens to everyone.
I saw Madonna back in 85 at the San Francisco Civic center. Beastie boys opened up for her. The audience booed the Beastie boys off the stage.
Saw the same thing in NYC when the Beastie Boys opened for Big Audio Dynamite. They were booed offstage, quite rightly.
@@bukowski20 Quite rightly? The Clash wasn't even any good at that point. Much less Big Audio Dynamite. Beasties have a much better track record than either of those bands

Billy Crystal used to do a Joe Franklin sketch on his SNL run. He also appears in "The Aristocrats" movie. I even ran into Mr. Franklin in a bank in Manhattan. Nice guy.
Yes! Thank you! I’m like why do I know that reference? Was that where Billy Crystal goes..Matzas by Strietz, for the unleavened experience of a lifetime”..
Joe Franklin was the person that Sarah Silverman said was inappropriate with her in The Acristocrats. Of course it was a joke, but he wasn't happy about it at the time.
Madonna’s 1st show of her 1st was in Seattle at the Paramount Theater. I was there just to see what was going on g to happen

"I want to get pushed into a thing of fruit." I'm with him. Let's make this happen, Hollywood!

Mike D got in his signature "conTRAWversy"🎉
I saw them booed like crazy when they opened for Madonna on that tour. BTW I had to see Madonna in trade for a friend to go with me to see Don Henley. However, we were center stage on the 3rd row so it was more entertaining than I thought it'd be. All I remember of the Beastie Boys is they skipped in a circle as the boos rained down.
Booing because the crowd only wanted to see Madge?
@@imalwaysrightMost people, especially Madonna fans wouldnt have known what to do with them.
@@RobbieFitzgerald Exactly! Especially when one of the stage props the Beastie Boys used on that Madonna tour was a giant paper-mache penis. Blah,ha!! 😂😜🤣 Just saying...
@mavfan1, WOW! What a trade off that was having to go see not only 1 but 2 narcissistic, pompous, dipshlts live in concert. WTF-OVER! Sorry my friend but having the pleasure to break bread in conversation with Joe Walsh a few times over the years & Henley's name coming up in every conversation. I can say that Don's an absolute dipshlt & greedy AF to his fans & everyone else around him. And as far as Madonna goes, well enough said. Just keeping it a buck!
When they first came to the uk, in I think it was Liverpool their show ended in a literal riot and that was people who had paid to see them.
Sounds like the makings of a new show.
Where Conan goes around to various musicians and tests their gold record for authenticity.
I admire that they took down the gold record and busted the glass to take it out and investigate.
That's so Beastie Boys.
Genius, he did it because he was high. Otherwise it wouldn’t have happened.
Kurt Cobain did the same thing with the gold record of Nevermind
Conan having a genuine laugh is such a good moment...
If the man's amused (at someone else's joke), you know you're in for a ride!
Beastie Boys need to start " Gold Record Gate " investigation 🤣🤣🤣🤣
New song maybe 😮
Was thinking take all of their gold and platinum records, figure out what they are, get the clean not painted/plated versions, then make a new album, song, or EP incorporating those artists and songs. My meta view is that will likely go gold/platinum, and then the under-appreciated artists whose albums were used as trophy mules will get a slight royalty bump. WIN-WIN
The gold record story is odd and interesting! Funny that they even thought of taking it out of the glass 😊
Another interesting thing about gold and platinum records, especially from way back in the day: a lot of singles sold a million copies and albums sold 500,000 or 1,000,000 copies, but the record companies did not want to pay for an official audit certification by the RIAA so the labels would give an in-house gold or platinum award to the artist. So the fact is that there are a lot more genuinely million-selling singles and albums than the ones that are “officially” listed by the RIAA. Labels have to pay a lot for audit/certification, yet they also know the sales figures of their own artists so, many times, they don’t bother seeking an RIAA accounting audit at all. They just spray paint records in-house for their bestselling artists. This shows how cheap the record labels have been over the years when it comes to certification and also dovetails with this revelation that even RIAA certified records were typically NOT painted copies of the actual record being honored. 😄
Now I'm thinking about Billy Crystal's impression of Joe Franklin on SNL. "Thanks to our sponsor, Streit's Matzoh. Matzohs from Streits. For the unleavened experience of a lifetime."
Was just saying - I think we have ourselves a legitimate, juicy scandal.
All these decades, the RIAA has been laughing their asses off every time they spray paint another Gold record _du jour_ - "Yo - let's give Paula Abdul this Muppets Take Manhattan soundtrack! HAAAAA!!"
"But - What if she ever tries to play it?"
(Pause)

I'm pretty sure all gold records aren't actually the artist's actual record, but some old vinyl they have laying around. They just didn't think people would put them on a turntable and play them haha
Although if they're already gold-coating the record and putting the album's label on it, it is really that much more effort to grab a real copy of it?
@@dlxmarks yeah, this is simply complete disrespect for the artist.
@Sonnell nope. The artist's simply know or do not care which "record" is in the presentation plaque from the RIAA. It is for total units sold, and is given to the artists in the same year the sales are achieved. It would take forever for the record labels to give the RIAA a legit physical copy of the artist's recording - has nothing to do with "respect" on any level - has to do with publicity•
@@wills2140 Well it is clearly visible if that LP is their music or not.
But if it is not theirs, then why bother giving anything at all? This is a symbol, and if that is not your music, it looses its meaning.
Either give then a generic LP symbolising an LP, not any other artists record, or give the exact one.
I just can not find any sense in your argument.
My argument is easy: Ask anyone without the knowledge of this video, what is on the golden record. Most people will think it is the actual music of the artist. Because that makes sense. Hence that is the meaning of this symbol. So that is to be expected.
Joe Franklin would have been a podcasting beast

Ad Rock, always the funniest and coolest.
I can see thousands of musical artists now going to break open their "gold" albums to actually play them.
I would totally watch a show where this happens. They could even do a little 'music history dive' into the artist whose record they 'inherited'
Nope. Most musical artists know the "Gold" or "Platinum" (or "Diamond") record awards are not really their recordings, and are not actually "gold" or "platinum" (they are vacuum metallized and "tinted").
It is just the Beastie Boys being high that made them even care what was actually in the presentation plaque. The award is for total units sold, could you imagine the cost if they all had to be the original artist's recordings and have actual precious metals?
It would take artists forever to just receive one plaque...
More beasties on this show, please.
Ad-Rock "I was smoking the pot..." Thank dad.
"We've made more than 7 albums!" LOL they've made 8
8 studio albums, but over 60 pieces of media that could have become platinum (singles, EP's, video albums and compilation albums can still have platinum sales)
@@marksmith2402 for sure, I just don't feel like Adam would be that technical about it. their EPs alone are all smashes. especially Aglio E Oilio and Root Down
@@marksmith2402 They have quite a few RIAA Gold and Platinum records for their total discography and a Diamond one for _Licensed to Ill_ so they should bust them all out and put them to the turntable test. 😀

@@ExplisitHipHop Polly Wog Stew is an EP, and it "counts", but it gets left out because a lot of people don't know about it. It's like the glam metal albums Pantera did with that other singer. They're still Pantera albums but they're not that well-known.
The world needs more Beastie Boys
It never crossed my mind that you can play a gold or plantinum record.
What's weird is paint should cover up the microscopic indentations and make the record unplayable. This implies that gold records and platinum records are not painted, but coated in some other way, or the picment is mixed in with the vinyl before pressing.
Maybe that is a n insider oke running through the record industry?

Paul’s Boutique. Just play it.
My first job was at a trophy shop in Los Angeles that made gold records for record studios.. The studios would send us the record label stickers and cases of random records. We'd spray paint random records gold and stick the labels on and frame em. They never sent the actual record that "went gold" for us to paint gold... And yes FYI its always just spray Paint, not gold or platinum.
I'm surprised they are actual records.

EPIC!!! We love Team CoCo and Beastie Boys!!!
EVERY time I see these guys, over the last 20 years or so (having grown up with them), I just can't get over how the f'ing _Beastie_ Boys are middle-aged. It's a true barometer of time and a somehow particularly poignant 'yet-again' with another (wild, wild) immortal generation having chilled out as they've slowly grown old.

When Horovitz started his anecdote about their gold record, I expected he was going to say that they took it out of the plaque and flipped it over to have a convenient surface to separate the seeds and stems from the pot he'd mentioned they were smoking/going to smoke.
But the truth was more revelatory as it turned out.
The gold record is actually assembled by the lady who played the piano songs on the record. It’s genius!!
She is secretly using her own album to create all the awards and eventually she will buy enough of her own album to make awards with that she will get her own gold record of her own gold record.

The record status display story is true. Most, if not all, album achievement displays - Gold & Platinum- are usually rejects of any release. The manufacturer just gold or platinum colors it. I think this was low-key insider dope. I found out about record companies using "surplus" albums for ceremonial gold and platinum awards from the guy who ran the audio engineering school I attended in the early 90s. He had a Neil Young album on the wall he said that in actuality it was a cast recording of "Showboat," Record companies have shelves and shelves of these things. The Gold and Platinum awards that included cassettes and CDs were just blank with the artists labels on them. The surplus are written off as separate line-item on corporate taxes. They are out of print records that were already remaindered but this way they company can essentially get another use out of them. It makes sense of a big record company to do this. A small record company might actually go ahead and use the artists actual album since they don't produce the volume of records the bigger companies do.
I was smoking "the pot" awesome!!
