"One of my favorite series Fred ran on Michigan Outdoors was the investigation on the doe-in-heat and scent manufacturers. I wrote and posted this years ago on Usenet in various forms to counter the claims of the doe-in-heat and cover scents.
In the early 1990s Fred Trost was interested in finding out what was in those bottles of doe-in-heat scent being sold. He investigated the largest manufacturer of scents, Buck Stop Lure Company, located in Michigan, and found out they were making blatantly false advertising claims about their products. In his magazine, Fred Trost's Outdoor Digest, he ran a series of articles detailing the investigation of the scent industry.
Fred visited the Buck Stop plant in Stanton, Michigan for a tour with cameras and film equipment in tow. Apparently Buck Stop had no idea about this investigation, and proceeded to give a full blown tour of the plant. They probably thought this would be good for free advertising on the most popular hunting and fishing PBS show in Michigan. The Buck Stop spokesman said they started their own farm in 1970 began breeding enough animals to collect doe-in-heat urine for their operation. Buck Stop claimed they collect urine from a doe one day in October, and one day in November. But since a doe produces 2 quarts of urine per day (on the average) while in heat, this means only one gallon of urine per doe in a year. Buck Stop was bottling 42 gallons of their doe-in-heat scent an hour. The spokesman said that the location of the farm is kept secret for security reasons. But by using simple math, this would require a ridiculously large deer herd.
In Michigan, any person or company must have a permit from the Department of Natural Resources to have wild animals in captivity. After the DNR's records were found for Buck's Stop farm, this what was printed about in the Fred's Outdoor Digest about the farm, "According to DNR records: 30 whitetail deer, 2 elk, 1 black bear, 15 foxes, and 6 coyotes. And that's it. That's the farm that supposedly supplies the leading manufacturer of scent products in the country. In fact, it would take 336 does in captivity to supply the Buck Stop factory for just one 8-hour shift. And to run their bottling process for six months, it would take 43,000 different does."
A dozen of different doe-in-heat products (Robbins, Tinks, Buck Stop, Superior, ect) from different companies were sent to McCrone Associates Laboratory to see what was really in them. A sample of real deer urine was tested to be 95% water and 5% urea solids, so all the products should of had the same composition. Needless to say, they didn't. Many had less than the normal amount of urea, and had other chemicals such as glycol and glycerin in them. For example, The Outdoor Digest reported these results about Buck Stop's 200 Proof doe-in-heat lure, "2 to 2-1/2% solids, most of which are unrelated to deer urine..appear to be glycol related and interfere with detection of urea." The label on the "200 Proof" says its collected during the hottest five hours of a whitetail doe's 26 hour estrus period. But in reality it is 99-3/4% water and glycol. Some of the products tested had up to 4-1/2% solids, but it is highly questionable if they actually came from deer. 50 LB bags of dried urea are readily available from fertilizer companies, and when mixed with the proper amount of water, will mimic urine.
Fred also explained about the stories of how that buck followed the trail of doe-in-heat someone put down. The cause of this behavior can be explained simply because it is a different smell in the woods, and the deer is merely being curious.
Fred really hammered the industry and said a lot of disparaging (but true) statements about Buck Stop and the other scent manufactures. Buck Stop then sued Fred/Michigan Outdoors for slander/libel and won the case with a 2 million (?) judgment. I believe the Buck Stop filed for a Trade Secret stipulation which prevented Fred from revealing the results of the court recorded statements of the manufacturer. A lot of the evidence Fred had was ruled inadmissible in court because Buck Stop�s attorneys got it all ruled as a trade secret. Fred really got a raw deal out of the court case. It shows that any large company with deep pockets can afford the best ambulance chasers there is and win a case. It doesn't matter if they are guilty or not, the better attorney can win the case. This court case was what prompted Fred to get his law degree due the poor representation he had.
Fred regrouped after the loss of the court case and started a new show, The Practical Outdoorsman. I noticed that everything that he put in the new building was on loan, such as mounts, displays, ect., so they could not be taken just in case of another court case.
Later on, Fred investigated the myth that human urine, man-made perfumes, predator urine, or scents not normally present in nature will scare off deer. On his show, he took his own urine (a few hours a steak dinner) in an area frequented by wild deer to see if it would scare them off. The deer came right up to the urine and were not scared by it. In addition to the human urine, a bottle of Aqua Velva aftershave, and a quart of ammonia were dumped on the ground. A buck came up and sniffed both the ammonia and aftershave, and was not alarmed. One small buck even started licking the grass where the urine was dumped. This explanation was given, "But why doesn't this human urine scare them? Because urine, from any animal is primarily urea filtered from the blood and doesn't contain any clues as to what the animal has been eating."
Before I saw this show, I used to climb out of my tree stand and walk downwind about a hundred yards just to pee. This was done out of fear that my urine would scare off the deer. Now if the urge to pee comes, I just go from the tree stand or blind. I have had deer walk over my urine and even sniff it without being alarmed."

You left out Trost was found liable for defaming Buck Stop in court. Buck Stop won a 4 million dollar judgment in a trial. Trost knowingly lied on air and in print about their company. Later he tried to hide assets by claiming his son owned them. After he died his widow won an almost 200,000 dollar judgment against the author of this channel over money she was owed.

Every Thursday evening I was glued to Michigan Outdoors/Practical Sportsman watching, listening, and learning from your dad. Fred Trost was the supreme hunting and fishing mentor to an entire generation of Michigan hunters. Off to my deer blind and thank you for sharing the memories, Zach.

Fred was so iconic. I remember this as if it was yesterday. Sad. Fred was always the champion of all of Michigan outdoors-persons, resources and opportunities. I still have all of my Practical Sportsman Awards.
I’ll refrain from going after Buck Stop but the reality was, no one was getting what they thought they were buying. Everyone knew that, or so the fraternity of mostly deer hunters did.

Sure do miss this show. If it is of any comfort i drive by the buckstop building several times a week on my way to and from my hunting property. The building is clearly abandoned and in rough shape. Your fathers legacy of teaching the right way and doing the right thing will live forever thru you and his videos. Something to be proud of for sure.

I remember this very well even though It was a long time ago, I remember because I loved the show and Fred Trost is the best host ever! He took one for all of us! I felt terrible what happened but he did it because he believed in himself and what he was talking about, As far as I know he didn't lose any fans of his show it least I hope not! My dad and I watched Fred every week in a small town in British Columbia Canada! I grew up on this show! I remember as a kid rewatching episodes on vhf as he recorded every episode! A big part of the outdoorsman that I’ve become is because of two things. My Father, who taught me to respect the outdoors; (fish, animals, trees, plants, and all of mother nature’s resources that we are blessed to be able to live off of) and this show!!!

I remember watching the episode that caused your Dad all this grief. I was shocked when he lost in court. He told the truth. I, to this day, never understood how he could have lost. I still refuse to purchase or use anything the Buck Stop sells.
I don't either but it managed to continue after his passing and I was able to inherit some of the headaches that I am still paying on today. Thanks for Commenting.

@@lucasoldaker2158 he disagreed with Buck Stops claims that their doe-in-heat product was collected from deer while they were at the peak of the estrus cycle. The problem was with the amount of product they were selling they would have needed thousands of deer which they didn't have. Fred pointed that fact out. Fred went on to claim, if my memory is correct, that dumping your own urine in the same area you would use Doe-in-heat could also attract deer since they both contain ammonia which sparks a deers curiosity. In my hunting community we already knew that about Doe-in-heat so not many of us purchased it but a lot of people did so the company sued and, I'll never understand how, they won. Sad day for a guy that just wanted to help sportsmen and sportswomen. That's the way I remember it.

@@lucasoldaker2158 He made a statement on-air that basically said there was no deer estrus urine in Doe-in-Heat. I remember thinking "Oh, Fred, you shouldn't have said that." At the time, a well known sportsman's association in Michigan was feuding with Fred (largely behind his back), particularly about things he was telling us about the DNR (that other association has a long buddy-buddy relationship with the DNR). That association wound up owning the better part of the assets of Michigan Out Doors (which was Fred's TV show) including the mailing list he mentions in this video.. It is my personal opinion, which I do not claim to be factual, that association helped Buck Stop win the suit against Fred.
Very nostalgic. Fred had a great demeanor and outlook on life. I enjoyed Watching his shows as it made me want to get outdoors. RIP Fred.
Enjoyed Michigan Outdoors, Michigan Out-Of-Doors and The Practical Sportsman. Especially in the wintertime when I could stay warm and watch the re-broadcast on Saturday afternoons. Fred and guests would freeze so I didn’t have to.
Grew up watching your dad and Bob Garner. My brother and I were on a episode fishing the mouth of the Ausable river on the north Pier. Your dad and Bob got me into trying fresh water drum that day. It was sometime in the late 80s maybe even 1990 can't remember.

I feel so bad to what happened to your father.this show is one or my favorite hunting show that I really loved.and as today I still love the show, I remember like it was yesterday when it happen. I,m from Canada and every Thursday night I was in front of the tv. He was a good guy and yes it was to bad it ever got to that, I know he's gone but I send a big thanks to him and all of you. This was before my time watching Fred in his time, but my fellow open carry movement founder, himself from Bath, told me this tale earlier this year while we toured the town and highlighted what used to be the studio and museum, and the plans he had for the land he lost.
Fred's ability to roll with the punches, stay on task and unendingly be a hell of a nice guy to everyone remains the stuff of legend with those who knew or watched him. This episode surely showcases why.
This is sad to see, I had read about it online but to see it play out is kinda sucky, thank you Zachary for sharing this.
He caused his own problems. He could have backed off. He made many claims that he ended up pay for. Literally at the same time I brought in a buck with the product. Did the buck care what it was when he stuck his nose in my scent bomb and I killed him by bow? Didn’t matter, I killed the deer, did it matter what the deer was attracted to ? No. He should have backed off.
His drive to walk HIS line, to speak HIS truth is why I hold him in such high esteem. We could count on it every week, paired up with less of that and more political correctness from MUCC on the show before it.
He heavily Inspired me with his fairly hated on later legal and political work, and polite but firm explanations to fans who were opposed.

I remember watching your Dad/Michigan Outdoors on PBS when I was a kid in the mid-80's. We're in Ontario, Canada and IIRC, it was on Tuesday nights (correction - Thursday night). I was an avid young outdoors man in my mid-teens and was always glued to the TV for the show. I remember the deer urine test episode. I also remember the episode where he hunted bluebills from a layout boat - I wanted a SxS pretty bad after seeing that over the shoulder clip of him shooting a duck over the decoys. haha Great show and great memories of my youth.
I’m so glad your Dad was able to continue the show. I didn’t start watching until after this happened. Who knows if I’d be hunting today if your Dad’s show went off the air. It was a major part of my foundation in hunting and shooting

When family's actually sat down and watched a TV show together.
How disheartening! I remember Fred from the Michigan Outdoors era on PBS back in the eighties, he always came across as a warm and friendly chap not to mention a vast reservoir of knowledge. And there was a period of time on that show where he made it his cause to make hunting and fishing and other activities more accessible to those with physical disabilities which spoke a great deal to his character in my opinion. A standup guy. I had no idea he was going through these legal difficulties.

One thing I realized post-“Scent-scam” lawsuit...your dad, in doing this, and I’m sure wasn’t the original purpose of his inquiry into the subject...but became it...he revolutionized the scent industry...country and world-wide.
But, I will state, I remember watching when your dad dispelled the myth of hunters peeing in the woods by pouring a bottle of his own urine out on TV as an example for the scent scam was genius!!!!

I remember that time. Everyone I knew would never use buckstop after they did this. I'd like to know what happened to all of your dad's stuff after they took it.
Much of it was auctioned off, MUCC purchased some of the Intangible Assets, We purchased some of it back, some was trashed, etc.
Fred you have a greatly missed you were a huge part of my childhood with my father watching you every week and then later when I was an adult watching you with my father-in-law. Will miss you may you rest in peace. He really got screwed on that legal deal. An apology handsome repeated retractions during deer season for a couple of years should’ve been good enough. I wouldn’t buy the product anyway even if it worked or didn’t work because they were so harsh when they would after you. They should’ve excepted a retraction come on apology, and a chance to even show how their product works with their testing procedures. I will never forget this episode. I was so angry about this. I was a young man at maybe 26 or so. I told every hunter I could to quit buying buck stop because of this. The POS at buckstop could have handled this in many different ways and chose attacking THE show of Michigan hunters and fishermen. I still stand by Fred, the math of urine collection from buck stop did not add up.
It was definately a hard time, however we persevered against all odds as they were planning to put us out of business. Life went on and we still had fun!
I loved watching his show... or shows as it were. I was a subscriber to the magazine when this went down. Subscribed to the new magazine as soon as it was introduced. Never made it to the museum though.
I now watch a Michigan (U.P.) based outdoor show I found on youtube called 906 Outdoors. Whenever they have Buck night (like tonight) I think of watching Michigan Outdoors with my dad. I'll be sure to share your videos with him.
My wife used to work at the hilltop tavern in bath Michigan and Fred used to come in and get hamburger fries and a beer what a down-to-earth regular guy everybody liked him the new Michigan outdoors seems to just go to places where people own hundreds or thousands of acres and they let him go hunting on the rich property with all their abundant animals I like the old show better they would just go out on state federal land whatever

I grew up watching Fred and miss the heck out of this show! I used to love visiting the museum and always hoped that I would get a chance to meet him there. Unfortunately, that never happened. He was a great man and did a lot of great things for those of us that love and live the outdoors.
Earlier this summer, my girlfriends aunt asked me to come over to help her come up with prices for some hunting and fishing gear for an estate sale. In with all of the outdoor items were two Luckys blinds and they didn’t even appear to be used. So awesome to see that in the video.

I remember this show well, I use to tape all his shows to put in my hunting vids. After his series about scents I never used them again. For several years I carried a bottle of ammonia and poured around scrapes per his advice. Can't fight big money as he found out. Sad.
Fred was a very smart man . He was an advid sportsman and Hunter. He really was taken advantage of in court but he should have never took on backstop lures . He really bit off more than he could chew with that large company and they proved money can buy a court .

I can say it Mort Neff Bob Gardner and his cronnies where pissed that Fred took the Michigan Outdoors name with him after Mort screwed Fred over so they helped Buck stop Screw Fred again. You should start your own show Zack it is needed again besides that MUCC trash.
I’m curious as to what led to this occurring. I was only like six years old when I started watching Fred trolls, so I don’t remember much other than the fact that he is what caused me to get interested in a Hunting & Fishing.
What 🤨 I’m asking does anyone know why this happened?? Although this is not uncommon in the Hunting & Fishing Industry considering everyone is constantly stabbing each other in the back in that industry anyway. It’s extremely competitive!!

Nope, when you got to go, you got to go. Not to mention it generally gives you another perspective on the area around you, and speaking from experience I have seen movement and activity at the time.

@@Michigan-Outdoors they are still in business. The old man that started the business back in 1953 turned it over to his daughter and son-in-law. Probably still have the same 20 or so does producing a hundred thousand gallons on pee harvested at the peak of the estrus cycle. (They must stick a garden hose down their throats so it never stops flowing) and I think that's where Fred and I had the problem with Buck Stops claims.

What a bunch of BS this was. I remember being confused as to how this could have happened. It was so clear to me through the episodes leading up to this that the Buck Stop company was lying to everyone. I'm still confused. And how Fred went on the air and made a show like this after all that had happened, well, it sure shows the kind of man he was. Respect.

I always enjoyed the show. Visited the museum a couple times. And had a great time at the Outdoor Festival. The 100 yard bow challenge was awesome.
Too bad Fred couldn’t have taken a 1st Amendment (Free Speech) defense against Buck Stop. Never have or will purchase any of their products. All that stress was probably his demise. Truly missed.

I remember watching Mort Neff & Jerry Chiappetta , then Fred Trost and watched this realtime, he sure got a screw-job by the court. Buck Stop was lying to customers and selling product that wasn't as advertised.
Never bought a Buckstop or related company product ever again after this.
They tried but they didn't exceed ! And the hell with Bob too !! Big fat snake !! The michigan of outdoors show never was the same , that God Fred had his own show for awhile .
Thanks for Commenting, Your are Right, Fred produced Michigan Outdoors from 1979-1992 and then the Practical Sportsman from 1992-2005. MUCC started their show in 1992 Called Michigan-Out-Of-Doors to replace Fred's
I know my family and i watched your father's show when I was a very young hunter to a adult when he took over the show when Morten retired even with Morten he goes a back a long time I did not miss many I can tell you that and i enjoyed them all and still watch your clips you post and still enjoy them it bring back a lot of memories to me watching them thinking of my dad .

I always thought game scents were a scam for pretty much the same reasons that he discovered. I stopped using it years ago when, during bow season, I had a similar experience due to an emergency "I have to pee right now - right here!" situation and a couple hours later, several deer (and a whistle pig) spent a significant amount of time leisurely grazing all around the spot. There should still be regional shows like this all over the country. When I was growing up in the 60s and 70s, there were a lot of locally produced sportsman shows, and shows on other subjects, all over the country. Now, "content" on the "World Wide Web" has replaced most of that. When they were operated fairly, local stations (both radio and television) were great assets to their respective communities. The internet could have and should have been one of the best things to ever happen to humanity. But, the one thing that ruined it all right from the beginning is, of course, humanity itself. R.I.P. Mr. Trost. Thanks for all you did.

He accused buck stop scents , a michigan company, if not putting deer urine, specifically doe estrous urine in their bottles. Said it could be cow urine. Wouldn’t drop it so they sued and won a 4+ million dollar judgement. He later got caught hiding assets as well. As far as I was concerned he picked a stupid battle to die over. I used other scents back then and killed bucks with their nose right in a scent canister when I sent an arrow through. Did it matter what kind of urine it was? No , it served as a curiosity to the bucks and put them in position for a good shot. I followed His show all his time in the air, he did a lot of good. But he went too far on a topic that wasn’t worth ruining what he had built. Most of us know while he did do a great show, he was not a great hunter, more if a typical occasional few day a year deer hunter. One thing he also became good at was big ideas but didn’t follow through on. Many restarts to his magazine, club, initiatives etc., most just kinda stopped.

@@benge3x I was around when this happened, and from what I was told by sources very close to this was that Buck Stop offered to drop their lawsuit IF Fred would pay them $1 a d make a public retraction on his show. He refused, and lost his ass. Even worse, it still affects his family. I also remember when he got busted for hunting without a duck stamp and also faced federal charges for illegal possession of federally-protected taxidermed raptors. I did a TV segment with him once (not on his show). He was completely full of himself and a legend in his own mind. I do realize the many positive things that he did, a d the great positive influence that he had on getting people (especially kids) involved in hunting and fishing. I give him credit for that. But like his son says: Take some of these comments lightly, because many of them don't know the real story, and our heroes aren't always necessarily what we believe them to be. I'll put my flame suit on now.
