James Randi - Investigating Pseudoscientific and Paranormal Claims

  • This hour long lecture is from the McGill University's Lorne Trottier Public Science Symposium on the confrontation and threat of pseudoscience in contemporary society. As one of the central figures in the area of "flim-flam," James Randi has exposed fraud, deceit, cheats, fakes, liars, and charlatans with effervescent ease. Trained as a magician, his insight into pseudoscience is much more into how people fool themselves and others into believing an array of tricks from the bag of a learned conjurer. In this lecture he gives examples of such tricks and examines how they relate to modern paranormal nonsense.
    I myself do not own the copyright to this material. As stated previously, this was filmed, funded, and produced by McGill University, and so far as I can tell, this is their intellectual property. I have uploaded it here so that it may reach a greater audience and showcase the truly great work of the presenter and the hosts. If anyone should wish for me to take it down, I would oblige.

    I was into New Age from my late teens to mid 20s. As such, most of my memories of Randi are negative as the only exposure I had was New Age cult leaders and fake gurus trying to tar and feather him and deter people from listening to him. Then years later, I see this man in my feed and I listen to him... and he's totally correct about all of it. I had to learn myself after years of seeing this garbage and wasting money on books and magazines. What a shame.

      @Fred, you and I Fred, I went through similar beliefs seeking and searching wasting money in those books and videotapes.
      One day in 1980 I bumped into “Cosmos” by Carl Sagan on television, that was a rude awakening, for he dismissed everything I’ve learned thus far as “pseudoscience” that was the beginning of a long journey into reality via Scientific data and proven facts. So Dr Sagan was my first eye opener, followed by books from Richard Dawkins and many others greats.

    • @whatabouttheearth
      @whatabouttheearth Рік тому

      Well, they're not and he explained why. They work on cheaper paper that has starch. He said that counterfeits would use high quality expensive paper but many times that is not the case because the more expensive the paper and supplies are the less profit in return. So the visual and feel (part of the trick is baking in an oven) need to be believable, but the quality of paper would depend on the professionalism of the counterfeit operation. The entire goal of counterfeit bills is to make and maximize profit. I've seen plenty of counterfeit bills on the street, even ones that stores took, that were shockingly poor quality.
      So he's partially correct, in a sense, he's also bullshitting you, he's already established this. Do you not think the Department of Defense has evaluation, research and development units for preliminary contract evaluations? He's a magician, he already established that sometimes he's bullshitting you.

      @@whatabouttheearth Are you a secret service agent? How many counterfeit bills have you seen? The pen only detects that the paper is good. It doesn't detect the denomination. I'm guessing you benefit from the sales of these pens somehow.

    James Randi made one considerably significant error in his career. He caters to higher learning, not children. Children have not yet made up their minds on how the world works.
    Mr. Randi can waste his time all he likes, but he's either "preaching to the choir" or simply not getting through to people who box their ears.
    Magic and deception should be made to be part of public school curriculum at a very early age to prepare people for the realities of this dangerous and deceptive world.

    • @g1a1r1y3
      @g1a1r1y3 9 років тому +2

      I agree with you about "preaching to the choir" aspect of him and many of these other skeptics. But how exactly is Randi going to affect public school education? Moreover, children are heavily under the influence of their parents as opposed to adults who, granted it is too late for them, but who may still be influenced.
      Randi stated in a video on YT why he only rarely visits schools. He has had bad experiences with them. They are generally hostile to his teachings, especially when it pertains to religion, evolution, and pseudoscience. Universities tend to be more open with respect to those subjects.

      Television has a powerful effect. Gaming and TV are all kids care about. Developing a cartoon or kids show geared towards his viewpoints would reach out to children if picked up by a major network.
      I would see this as the televised equivalent of Skeptical Inquirer's kids section on the few last pages of their magazine. I had Scooby Doo, they could have James Randi.

    the eloquence in Randi's words just goes to show what a man of the people he truly is. He sternly expresses how much respect he has for people because instead of fooling them in order to scam them he rather fools them in order to educate them and awaken them so they can avoid being victims of the snakes lurking out there. This is how people get "woke".

    I have GravityDefyer shoes. I find them very comfortable to run in, when your heel hits the ground the impact is cushioned. 'Gravity Defying' is misleading, nothing is being defied, the time of the shock from impact with the ground is merely extended, making for a more comfortable run. There is little difference when only walking. One bad thing about the shoes is that if you step at too large of an angle it is easier for your foot to roll (which could cause ankle break/sprain).

    • @musek5048

    rob scrivener I have yet to see Randi promote any form of dogmatic skepticism with regard to spiritual or paranormal claims: he simply demands the same degree of scrutiny any other scientific discipline is subjected to. You'll notice that Randi rarely (if ever) makes any scientific claims of his own, so I don't think it matters what his scientific credentials are. His tools are those of logic and methodology: scientific claims require sound, consistent evidence, obtained through logically valid methods that eliminate (as much as possible) bias & subjectivity and that can be peer reviewed/replicated. All of this is taught in basic high school science. And unlike the charlatans he so eloquently exposes, his talent in deception is used to EDUCATE people on the very reasons they are so easily deceived. I fail to detect the dishonestly Sheldrake (in his own right often criticised for promoting pseudoscience with weak evidence) describes.

    • @beefy32
      @beefy32 10 років тому

      When he challenges Rupert Sheldrake scientific approach then it is important especially when at times Randi's work has serious flaws. Look up Randi denounced by Sheldrake on youtube.

    • @ChantryKnight
      @ChantryKnight 10 років тому +2

      rob scrivener Until and unless ANYONE is able to repeat ANY of Sheldrake claimed results (from any of his 'experiments'), the ONLY thing Sheldrake has to 'berate' Randi about is not having read his bullshit 'experiments'. Please refer to Rose and Bateson, who clearly explain the faults in and misinterpretation of sheldrake's data on 'formative causation' as an example
      www.sheldrake.org/Articles&Papers/papers/morphic/Rose_response.html

    • @beefy32
      @beefy32 10 років тому

      ChantryKnight Ok what about the results that Dean Radin and PARA Labs at Princeton are receiving in regard to thought based experiments?

    • @ChantryKnight
      @ChantryKnight 10 років тому +2

      rob scrivener What does that have to do with Sheldrake not having had anyone repeat HIS experiments?
      And in case you hadn't noticed, the experiments you refer to by Radin have also NOT been successfully repeated by anyone else... what about the word 'repeatability' is so baffling? Take, for example, a physics experiment done by high school students. It was designed by physicists and can be REPEATED by ANYONE and yield the same results... exactly the same way ANY 'paranormal' experiment to date can't be.

    • @beefy32
      @beefy32 10 років тому

      ChantryKnight Because the goalposts have been moved with any type of paranormal experiments, in other words extraordinary claims need extraordinary evidence which is unfair compared to the rest of the scientific community. I have copied and pasted the below info from Princeton, of the affect consciousness has on the world which has an error rating of 1 in a hundred million:
      When human consciousness becomes coherent and synchronized, the behavior of random systems may change. Quantum event based random number generators (RNGs) produce completely unpredictable sequences of zeroes and ones. But when a great event synchronizes the feelings of millions of people, our network of RNGs becomes subtly structured. The probability is less than one in a hundred million that the effect is due to chance. The evidence suggests an emerging noosphere, or the unifying field of consciousness described by sages in all cultures.
      The Global Consciousness Project is an international, multidisciplinary collaboration of scientists and engineers. We collect data continuously from a global network of physical random number generators located in up to 70 host sites around the world at any given time. The data are transmitted to a central archive which now contains more than 15 years of random data in parallel sequences of synchronized 200-bit trials every second.

    However, just a few notes, or questions:
    Water for sure is 'healing' (it depends on the dis-ease)
    Vibration of atoms is just plain physics (he should know that too)
    And also....
    I do regret that (Not the fact that he notes gratefulness towards medication and his opertion, or as he says: medical science) he doenst put a critical note to PHARMA just like he does to media and homeopathy etc.. Since pharmaceutical busineses are also desceitful for a great deal and marketed, downplaying side effects!... and it is more about commerce than as medication.... and medical research is largely sponsored and many many medication that is being prescribed doing more harm than good... regret that he didnt make the critical note there.

    Atheist position is "No evidence suggests a deity exists, until further evidence suggests otherwise, there is no reason to support a belief in a deity.
    It is the default position. Saying "An atheist does not believe in God" is incorrect, that suggests the default position is that there is a god, and atheists refuse to believe in it. Which is wrong.

    An agnostic believes that is is impossible to ever know if a god exists. But agnostic beliefs fall into two distinct groups. Those that are agnostic atheist, and agnostic theist. Agnostic atheists say it is impossible to know if god exists, and chooses not to actively believe. An agnostic theist believes it is impossible to know if god exists, but chooses to believe in god regardless.
    There is no such thing as being solely agnostic, because is you cannot not know if you do or dont believe.

Death is a massive destruction of all we've experienced up to that point of passing away. It mutilates our emotions and hurts beyond what words can describe. The only thing close to the feeling of losing a loved one to death is a break up.

This is why it takes so long to navigate and differentiate the many levels that makeup the mind. To answer your first question this work has less to do with mental programming (except for observing and realigning to more accurate representations) than direct experience of insight and revelation which occur within the mind and imagination. In terms of content deep complexities arise.
