I had not noticed his sweet comment before today when I revisited this recipe....he was a precious soul and so is Miss Phyllis; miss and love them even though I have never met them in this life. I look forward one day to sitting down with them in both in eternity to exchange great recipes and discuss our faith in Jesus. WHAT A DAY THAT WILL BE!
I miss you Mrs, Phyllis 🙁 Just here to see what I can do with a Chuck roast, of course your style. I am going to most definitely do this one your way. Already I could smell your cooking & it looks scrumptious.👍😋 Rest in peace Mrs Phylllis & Bucky. 💟😇🤠💖
2021 April. Back to find this recipe again. I’m doing keto and this is perfect. I’ll cut a roast into fourths and brown an eat on couple days. So enjoyed listening to Phyllis agn. Such a jewel. So glad these videos are here for all time. You left us your great wisdom.
Hello Phyllis, I hope your husband doesn't mind, I've spent the afternoon with you making my 1st Chuck Roast with rice and corn, along with the gravy the way you describe. lol I chose to cook for my wife today, as she had to work 12hrs at the hospital. I went to the store and bought the skillet, teriaki sause, corn starch, and butter. I let my chuck roast thaw from freezer for about 7hrs. Then followed your advise in this video. I should be just about done, and I'm kinda excited to see how it comes out! Thanks for your help!
I miss you Phyllis. How do I thank you now, today, March 9, 2021 for the perfect cooking instructions on the roast I have questions about every time I cook one? ♡ The detailed, couldn't-be-easier instructions will make me pretty much fearless for the two I'm putting in the oven today for 10 people at my job. They never thank me for meals......they eat, they burp, they fart then they leave the table and I clean up. If the money weren't so good I'd tell them ALL where to go! R.I.P. Phyllis and Mr. Bucky ♡~♡~♡
I love when you doing the plating and show it.It just makes it so much nicer to see the fully finished product.Thank you for doing these awesome videos.
Thanks Phyllis, I always go back to your recipe, amazingly simple but always a hit with my family! God bless you for sharing this with the world, love your cooking :-)
Hello debby, Your lid is probably not air tight so it would be fine as long as the knob or handle on your skillet's lid is oven proof. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and commenting, Phyllis
Hey thank you. My wife used your recipe like a month ago and it was awesome!!! She has made it a cpl times since and is cooking it again today. I can't be more exited about it. Thank you thank you
Hi bina2one, Thanks for your comments. I've noticed that my own husband has made a comment on this chuck roast. Here's hoping he will watch more of my videos and learn to cook so I can do other things like read a book, work in my flower beds, and maybe even take a nap one afternoon. That would be really nice. I was shocked to find out how much electricity certain appliances use. We bought the umbrella clothesline after I did the math on how much using the dryer cost. Phyllis
I just saw where your sweet Mr. Bucky made a very nice comment about your roast! That's so special for him to do that! It shows how much he appreciates your great cooking! made me smile!
Oh how sweet Doctor Stokes, I just had to smile, your husband loves you so much it’s so obvious and so precious, I finally found something I had not seen before going through withdrawals!
Oh my goodness!! Mrs. Phyllis, I never thought of which kitchen appliance cost the most to use. It shocked me to know that a crock pot and a toaster oven used the most energy, from not being insulated! It does make alot of sense in what you say. Thanks for the great tips and wonderful looking chuck roast recipe !
I've enjoyed all your videos! Thank you for sharing your good Southern Cooking methods and home-style food and menus. I can't wait to try this chuck roast.
Well, my goodness! What an incredible testimony than to have that sweet husband thank you here in your site! And,,, I thank you both for being real, loving, kind, generous souls! Ahhhh, the world is beautiful with folks like you both in it! Thank you! This was heart warming,,,and tummy warming!!! ♥️☺️🕊🙏
Thank your for your video! It was very helpful to me! I wanted to make my first roast for my husband and son. I stumbled across your video by the title. You explained so well I feel ready to get started now! Thanks again!
Just reviewing some of your wonderful dishes! I wish I could find another cooking show that is as calm and sensible as you were. I forgot the tip about putting the paper towel over the splatter screen! How simple yet saves a lot of time cleaning up the grease mess. Thank you for sharing a part of your life with us. 🤗
wow... i did not know that the crockpot uses up so much electricity, i was thinking of getting one to cook with but maybe not now. i was going to use it all the time thanks for posting
Very interesting about the crock pot, toaster oven, and energy. We used them (and gas grill) during our long DIY kitchen remodel. Now, I am using my stove/oven mostly because it's new and works so well... stopped by to see what you had for old-school pot roast. Making it today!
Hi Terri, Thanks for making a comment. Glad the chuck roast turned out well for you. I Don't envy you picking figs-- that's one of the stickiest jobs in the garden. Phyllis
Hi Miss Phyllis, just want you to know that I love your recipes. You cook like my mother used to cook. She's in Heaven now. Keep up the good cooking, God Bless
Wow Wow Wow!!! I will try pitying my frying pan like Miss Phyllis this recipe looks great but the scissor idea is THE BEST FROM NOW ON I WILL USE THIS...LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU💕💕💕💕
I cook my roast how you did yours in the skillet first. I used different flavoring then made the gravy. heres the thing. my husband cant bite down or chew anything because of his dentures. I made roast before he couldnt eat. let me tell you..this was the most tender roast, the way you said do it. my husband ate every bite on his plate and raved about how great it was. so thanks for those tips in cooking it. it was so delicious and I thank you. I made carrots and celery in with the roast. I made green beans, mash potatoes and hot buttered rolls and fruit salad, using sour cream instead of cool whip. that way is so good. I use a can of fruit cocktail, sour cream, walnuts, marshmellows, coconut, grated kind. just measure as much or little as one wants.. it is so good..thanks for the hints about the roast. oh, I uused my cooking scisors to cut up the meat. it works so great. it keeps it from being stringy.
Really good tips about the power usages of crock pots and toaster ovens. I knew about toaster ovens. Didn't know about crock pots. Much thanks Miss Phyllis!
good info about the crock pot! I was going to do my beef in the crock pot until I heard your excellent advice. Thank you for sharing. AND I WON'T be getting a toaster oven either.
OMG that looks SOOOO good.I watch all your videos, and all your food looks so good. I do have one question though. I'm 72 yrs old, and I was wondering if you would adopt me? Just kidding. ~~~ Keep the videos coming, & I'll keep watching them. Thanks Phyllis.
Yummy Phyllis! I use leftover coffee from that morning in place of the Teriyaki sauce/marinade and coat the roast in brown mustard and my seasonings. I add a little water if need be. The coffee gives it a super rich beefy flavor. That's my tip, but I'm going to try yours. I was shocked by what you said about the crock pot and toaster oven using more electricity than the oven. I use them all the time. Not any more!!! Thank you so much!
Phyllis's meals always look delicious.....I just need to not be hungry when I watch her videos....cause then Im starving from seeing such delicious food!
I wish the cooking channel would take a peek at your work. I can't stand there equipment and ingredient heavy recipe selection. It's so easy to cook and eat well. And you are one of the few that delivers a reality check with your technique/method.
So interesting about the crockpot and toaster oven, but watching you cut that roast with the scissors is amazing!! I never thought of that but.....something else I have learned from you. Thank you bunches for a new technique.
Good gracious i swear I'm in my grandmothers kitchen ready to eat..thank you for this presentation..got to call butcher now and order roast. Im 75 food doesnot I nterest me .but this got me going..much thanks
Had Tropical storm Florence coming through this weekend with a lot of rain and minimal wind so I wanted to do something different and I used Worcestershire sauce and a drizzle of liquid smoke and two pinches of Rosemary and Thyme and by the time the taters were done and the gravy was on and the cabbage was in the plate it was time to throw down. the chuck was tender as all get out and delicious and everything went so well together. Thanks for such a great video to share, will do over and over and will check out your other recipes...You need a recipe book!
Makes a difference browning meat!! One of my favorite thing's in my kitchen is my "Splatter Guard"!!! WOW that thing is a life saver, really....:0) That makes sense about Our Crock pots! Toaster oven also!! I never thought about it til now!!! I don't use a crock pot like I once did, back when I was working... We seem to like our roasts better in the oven ... I just use a regular toaster for toast ... actually gave mine to a friend that needed one. Very Interesting Ms.PhyllisStokes!!
Me too. I never throw away any of mine. My mamma always enjoyed hers and she loved the skin on chicken too. She lived to be 89. I miss her so much. She did eat lots of good old country cooking. That's the way she always cooked. Collards cooked with ham, turnips cooked with fresh pork (specifically Boston butt) ,she always seasoned peas and beans with ham. Real butter, whipping cream, salt, pepper and bacon drippings in the homemade cream corn (I always made that 😊) She loved real butter and she didn't skimp on mayonnaise either. LOL I love Miss Phyllis and Mr. Bucky and I believe everyone should eat however they choose to eat. I would have gladly eaten any of the delicious meals Miss Phyllis cooked. And her son Steven that is continuing her channel seems to be a great cook too. 💜👍😎
Tag really enjoyed the roast! He thinks it is one of the best roast that I have cooked! We had fresh potatoes from the garden along with butter beans and okra from the garden! Wonderful supper over and now onto the figs!
Hello Ms. Phyllis. .. it looks super scrumptious! !!! Thank you for the information on the crock pot and toaster oven. I would've never thought they used more electric. I'm looking forward to making this !!!
Another memory....Jasmine rice for breakfast with butter & a little sugar with toast of course. Dinner with gravy.......Many Thanks as always.....Your profession might have been, Teacher....... in a great many subjects :)
Thanks for the information on how much power various appliances use. Never gave it much thought but now I will. Plan to try your recipe soon. Will let you know how my family likes it.
Just finished making always tender chuck roast. It is delicious!!! I am on my way to pick figs. I am going to try your method for freezing and am going to try fig newtons! Thanks again for my wonderful gift!!!! I am going to be calling you again real soon!
Who knew about the crockpot costing so much more than a regular oven? Thank you! I make my gravy like you do also, but I don't care for rice so I do mashed potatoes.
Great Job on your Tutorial! i liked how you gave the research you found on using the slow cooker compared to the oven, to save on your electric bill. Also I loved you used rice as a change from the same old potatoes everyone uses. I Love rice and i eat it all the time. Again Great Job! I actually came across this by looking up how long should i cook my chuck roast if keeping it slow cooking on the stove top covered with a lid, I still never found that answer Ha. Also your Gordon Ramsey cookware is almost identical to my "Wolfgang Puck" cookware except yours has the tiny steam hole on the lid and mine does not:( I do like mine except cleaning sometimes can be a challenge. Keep up the good work!
This is a simple recipe. Good tutorial too! I was wondering if I could use a powdered stew mix? It's basically this stew powder that you add two cups of water to it to make a stew gravy for stews. Would that work do you think? Also.....when you were cooking this chuck roast, did you go over two hours or was it right at two hours? Thanks!
+Eric Boyles I certainly think you could use a stew mix. Sorry, I don't remember how long I cooked the roast but my guess would be 2-3 hours or until fork tender. I have made roast that cooked in as little as 1 1/2 hours but that would not be the normal.
Phyllis Stokes Thanks..that answers my question. I think a stew mix would be OK also. My Mom has answered this question also but she said to just cook it without any liquid ingr. Just a little water at the base of the pan and put it in the oven for 5 hours @ 200 degrees. I've never done what she said, so that's why I asked. I have a chuck roast about 3 lbs and 2 1/2 inches thick. I think I'll try the stew mix at 300 degrees for about 3 hours. Thanks for tip on the oven verses crock pot!! I'm putting the crock pot away!
Hello Phyllis, My prayers continue for you as you start your cancer treatment June 6th. My 82 y.o. mother is going through cancer treatment right now too. Would you mind if I share what I have learned making a pot roast from a chuck or blade cut? I generously salt and lightly pepper (both sides and edges) of a dry chuck or blade roast at room temperature (soak up all moisture with paper towels before seasoning roast) NEVER brown or bake a wet or partly frozen roast) brown in 3 tbsp. canola oil in ceramic Dutch oven or cast iron pan on medium heat till a deep golden not dark brown on both sides and around edges where fat is. Usually takes about 5 minutes on both sides and more when browning edges. Place in heated high heat crockpot add campbells beef broth 1/4 way up roast, 3 small fresh garlic cloves or 1/2 tsp. garlic powder, cover with lid, don't touch or lift lid for 2 1/2 -3 hours. Put all drippings in medium size pot, combine 1 part cold beef broth with 1 part cornstarch (ratio is 1 tbsp. liquid to 1 tbsp. cornstarch) but you may need more cornstarch and beef broth depending on the amount of drippings, bring drippings to a boil then reduce heat, add cornstarch liquid to roast drippings, stir constantly and gently bring to slow boil medium heat a minimum of 5 minutes. Meat easily shreds. Never cook roast in cast iron which should only be used for frying with oil. You can however use a ceramic Dutch oven on stove on low heat, 3 or 4 on your stove dial, with lid on for a few hours or until meat falls away with a fork.
That looks fabulous. I'll make it. However, I love hot roast beef fat and like flour slurries better than cornstarch. Buttered jasmine rice is a lifelong favorite. It's also delicious with sour cream, Worcestershire sauce, salt and freshly ground black pepper stirred in.
I am new here and I love your v logs. Thank you I get some really awesome cooking from you. Just love it. God Bless.oh for got to say I didn’t know that about a crockpot and energy used. I used a crockpot in my room to put water in and put moisture in the room. That is gonna stop today. Wow never knew.👀😮
Very interesting about the crockpot vs. the oven in cooking and which is more expensive to run. I don't own an oven, but I'm thinking of how I can insulate my crockpot better.
Its 10pm and I just finished watching this video. NOW IM STARVED TO DEATH! I'm wanting roast, gravy green beans and rice!! That looks delicious! I'm going to go get a roast tomorrow and make this!!!
Looks so good 😊 my husband has to have his gravy. He makes a big hole in his mashed potatoes to have his gravy. If we are invited to someone house to eat, i told him to look first to see if they gravy before he makes that big hole or dip. Because some people don’t have gravy.
How many inadvertently tried to smell that roast when Phillis brought it up to the camera? ... Me too. ;) The "umami" was prevalent in your kitchen during the making of this video. :)
My Dear Wife, You hit the jackpot with the chuck roast today-- the best one ever! I can hardly wait until you do it again!

Phyllis

The paper towel over the splatter screen is a dang good idea!!
That roast doesn't look like it shrunk up much.

Really interesting about the crock pot staying on the whole time. My meat always comes out tough in those things. Thanks for posting this.
That looks absolutely yummy!
Makes a difference browning meat!!
One of my favorite thing's in my kitchen is my "Splatter Guard"!!!
WOW that thing is a life saver, really....:0)
That makes sense about Our Crock pots!
Sorry, I love fat on brisket and chuck roast.
I like a little bit too.
It has most flavor

Made this. We flipped over it. Thanks Phyllis! Didn't have the Gordon cookware but the foil sufficed. Instead of the Jasmine, had some Texas spuds!
Great info., I am about to cook it your way - looks fantastic - really appreciate the time you took.
Missing Mrs Phyllis so I’m watching and learning from some of her old shows.
Me, too. Please keep them coming so we can enjoy her cooking, good advice and lovely personality!
My mom had that very same spoon rest, my spoon rest fell behind my stove. A drip coffee maker uses alot of power too. Thank you
Thanks for the information on how much power various appliances use. Never gave it much thought but now I will. Plan to try your recipe soon. Will let you know how my family likes it.
My mouth is watering! So delicious looking
I have never used teriyaki to flavor meat. Will worchestershire sauce work just as well and do I use as much as you did with the teriyaki?
I was wondering the exact same thing, I don't like Teriyaki. Did you ever try it? Think the next time I do a roast, I'll give it a shot and see.
Hey did either of yous try using Worcestershire sause instead of teriyaki .. lol yrs later but its be nice to hear before hand..ty
I use Worcester sauce, but try teriyaki now.
Just finished making always tender chuck roast. It is delicious!!! I am on my way to pick figs. I am going to try your method for freezing and am going to try fig newtons! Thanks again for my wonderful gift!!!! I am going to be calling you again real soon!
Which roast taste the best to you this one or the one in the pressure cooker?
OMG! The roast looks yummy!!!
I am so making my next roast this way!! Looks fantastic! :)
Looks really good, Phyllis. Am going to make this.
Who knew about the crockpot costing so much more than a regular oven? Thank you!
I make my gravy like you do also, but I don't care for rice so I do mashed potatoes.

I will always love her cooking video’s I would have loved to have met her she was a beautiful sweet lady inside and out
Hello Phyllis,
My prayers continue for you as you start your cancer treatment June 6th. My 82 y.o. mother is going through cancer treatment right now too.
I am loving your recipes. I can't wait to try this.
That meal was beautiful!
That roast will be pretty dang tasty!
I'm going to buy a chuck roast today. I haven't had one in at least 15 years and I'm going to splurge.
💜👍😎
This was delicious, could you make some chocolate chip cookies? Thank you so much I love your videos.
Here's the video on chocolate chip cookies ua-cam.com/video/11slyhzpE0s/v-deo.html .
You are very pleasant. And thanks for the crock pot tip.
Looks so good 😊 my husband has to have his gravy. He makes a big hole in his mashed potatoes to have his gravy. If we are invited to someone house to eat, i told him to look first to see if they gravy before he makes that big hole or dip. Because some people don’t have gravy.
Thanks for the crockpot information!
Lot's of valuable tips in this video. Thanks so much.
Always and I mean always the yummiest meals. ❤️🍴😍🤗
I am learning so much from that wonderful smart lady. She is like my mama.sweet too!
i have allergies with corn starch , can i use flour?
(WONDERFUL INFORMATION, THANK YOU SOOO MUCH.😊😊)
What a good Chef! I would love to come to Dinner! I'll buy the roast!
I like the proper portion sizes.
How many inadvertently tried to smell that roast when Phillis brought it up to the camera? ... Me too. ;)
The "umami" was prevalent in your kitchen during the making of this video. :)
Speaking of energy efficiency, What do you think about waterless cookware compare to the Gordon Ramsay cookware?
Never tried the waterless cookware so I wouldn't know how to compare them.

You just can't do any better for cookware as Saladmaster. Lost all but 1 pot and 3 lids. I'm building my set up a piece at a time, through ebay.
