- In this video I show you how to reseal a leaking power steering pump on 94-97 Accords.
If your pump is only leaking it's more cost effective to repair it rather than replace it.
If the pump has mechanical damage it's not worth fixing and you should replace it with a re manufactured unit.
While there are aftermarket kits out there I have found them to be incomplete and they most likely won't have all of the parts you'll need. So I recommend buying the replacement parts from Honda. While they don't have a kit and you'll need to order each part piece by piece it's still relatively inexpensive.
Here are the Honda part numbers:
Rear Cover O-Ring: 91349-PY3-000
Control Valve Cover (Large O-Ring): 91346-PY3-000
Control Valve Cover (Small O-Ring):
91317-P02-003 (Made by Nok)
or
91317-P0A-003 (Made By Showa) either will work.
Inlet Fitting O-Ring: 91345-PY3-000
High Pressure Line O-Ring: 91370-SV4-000
Shaft Seal: 91249-PY3-003 (Made by Nok),
91249-P0A-003 (Made by Showa),
or 91249-P02-003 (Manufacturer unknown) any of the previous part numbers will work.
Side Cover (Large O-Ring): 91348-PY3-000
Side Cover (Small O-Ring): 91347-PY3-000

I will be definitely getting a new power steering pump after seeing this 😅. Thanks for the video! 🙏
My sister was 1 of those people who think only Honda people can fixed them. I've change her mind after fixing many things on her 96 Accord.
Thanks for the excellent detailed video! I resealed the pump on my '96 Accord today. Bearing was really tight, so used a friend's hydraulic press. Great work!
That was one of the best video tutorials that I've seen. Thanks!
7 years old video, this really helpful . thank you for this video. very detailed step by step, I managed to changed all by my own within 3-4hours , also I did repaint it to look it like new.
Thanks man! Very helpful to preview the whole process before actually doing it. Nicely done video.
Excellent tutorial. You're the best channel for all 5th gen Accords. Thank you.
Thank You very much!! Perfect detailed process. I have a 1997 accord, ordered the complete kit online and followed your instructions. Worked perfectly and saved a lot of money.
Very well done! You obviously know what you're doing mechanically, and your camera work is just as good. I'll be watching more of your videos. Very professional and informative. I'll be doing this this weekend. Thank you!
Just did this on my 2000 Accord EX 4-cyl. As mentioned in the comments below there's a few less parts, but the basic design is the same. A few less o-rings as well. I was able to get the back cover o-ring off and replaced without taking the pump 'innards' apart, which simplified it for me. There's no spring which helped. Thanks so much for posting this video.
Excellent job, very-well-explained . I've just bought a second-hand-pump (too-expensive ! ) But I will rebuild the old-pump now that I've watched your video . No-one 'in-trade' mentioned rebuilding it , they all spoke of how-hard they are to find second-hand... Dave NZ
Thank you very much for your video. Though I have Honda Civic 95 the power steering pump is absolutely the same. I did everything exactly as you showed and it went perfectly well without any hitch.
Followed exactly, and the results are perfect.
Very informative , I was looking for a video to repair my pump on a 94 Nissan Patrol , this pump on your vehicle although externally different the internals are identical to my Patrol , great video good job
Excellent video. Very detail and thorough.
Very good tutorial!!!! I can’t stand when I find a how to video and the person doesn’t explain the steps very well, or the camera doesn’t show exactly where the bolts are! And this is a great example of how every car how to tutorial should be!!!! I find this very helpful! Also you sound like Ryan Reynolds. 😂
I always liked watching your videos. I see you haven't posted anything in a few years, you should think about coming back.
best help video I have ever seen. congrats
That was an excellent tutorial! The video was crystal clear and you hit all the important points and potential problems. My rebuild went very smoothly with the help of your tutorial. Your time and effort is greatly appreciated.
As usual. Typical top quality Bushougoma videos.
Great DIY and info.
Thanks for watching.
Are you a professional tech? I subscribed and watched most of your videos in 3-4 days. You are well versed and articulate in broad range of topics... Great teacher!
Great video mate'. It was very informative and easy to comprehend.
Sounds good, thanks for your help.
Gracias amigo segui tus instrucciones y logre reparar la direccion hidraulica .saludos 🇨🇱 desde chile
GREAT VIDEO !! THANKS A LOT ,ILL CHECK AND REPLACED ORINGS OF STEERING PUMP ON MY 95 ACCORD COUPE. WELL EXPLAINED MAN
The best video ever, thanks for sharing !!
No they don't sell a kit you'll have to order each part individually. I put the parts list for 94-97 Accords in the description.
hi bushougoma great vid on that power steering pump, quick question tho have you ever made a vid on replacing the timing belt on the same car 97 honda accord ex
Good job with details
thanks for the videos man. i have the same problem
I am a master tech for 30 years. I start watching this video as a curiosity. I got to admit, this is a complete video for how to rebuild pump. I point u missed, i think, after installing the pump back, add some fluid in the reservoir before u start the car and purge air.
Excelente video, gracias por compartir tu conocimiento y ayuda.
Thanks for the video!!!
Muchas gracias, excelente lección.
Sounds good, thanks
You the man!!!! youtube universities finest right here!!
Great video
I've owned my 94 Honda Accord EX coupe for 26 years now and done most of the work myself..
With 238,000 Miles my original power steering pump is time to be replaced.
Your videos are excellent..!
One question does the pulley come off that easy or will I need a puller?
It's splined to the shaft so it should pull off by hand.
They're made by Lisle part number 38220.
Honestly I only use them nowadays in tight quarters where my 3/8" impact won't fit. Once you buy an impact you won't go back to hand tools for pulley removal.
Good video friend👍. Greetings from Argentina
Nice video thanks
Hi I am from Brazil, and first thing I wanted to congratulation you for that video and you are very good teach, Congratulation.
Second thing I want ask you if you can make a video how change solenoid AT transmission gasket. There are 2 solenoids. Thank you so much guy.
Thank you
Good job
No the 90-93 Accords utilize a gear pump totally different design. 94-97 Accords use the rotor and vane style pump shown in the video. 98-02 Accords also use a rotor and vane type pump but it was redesigned which reduced the parts count.
Disassembly to remove the pump shaft and o-ring replacement inside is the same. But on the outside there are less o-rings to replace due to the new design.
I think the snap ring pliers are from KD tools. I bought them a long time ago.
hii great video and very detailed.nice!
is it the same pump for 91 accord? i mean same steps?
Thank u so much 👍
i recommend tightening all bolts in phases, never tighten a bolt all the way pattern or not , bring the entire face in gradually
great video nun the less
A torque wrench like the one used on those bolts must be used in one continuous rotating motion to achieve the proper torque. A tightened bolt will take MORE torque to rotate initially due to thread tension than a bolt already rotating which will give you a false reading.
Dividing the torque into multiple passes would solve this issue but it's a bit of a waste on such low torque fasteners (we're not dealing with a head gasket here) but you can if you want.
***** not true about the false reading, truth is when you do what you did you smash your gasket down to a thickness thinner then a proper set gasket wit gradual tightening of bolts in steps. with phased in torquing this is mitigated. you can smash an o ring in half doing what you did . nobody likes advice these days but im just trying to help freind , not only am i a part time millwright but i made this mistake on a pressure washer . you can smash a corner down to a lower depth then you can smash the entire gasket so basically you just "BENT" the face of that pump .
***** i was mostly talking to other viewers who seen you do this and did not under stand the expensive mistakes that can be caused as a result . on a car what you did is just fine no harm but if this was an air plane it wouldnt fly no pun intended
HI, nice work . Im having power steering fluid coming up to the reservoir. thats telling me that theres is air in the line.I orderd a new o-rings to inlet to pump body&outlet pressure hose to steering.05 EX accord 2.4 motor with 155000
awesome awesome video man
Great video. Do you know if this would be the same for 92-00 Civics and 90-93 Accords? What torque wrench and snap ring pliers are you using?
Since I take it the new rack included new inner tie rods check the outer tie rods for play. With the vehicle off the ground grab the wheel on the left and the right and wiggle. Repeat the process up and down to check the ball joints. Movement in both directions may be coming from the wheel bearings. Check all of the suspension bushings for damage.
If the vehicle seems to pull only when braking I'd check the brake system.
You had an alignment done after the rack was swapped right?
Hello Bushou, great videos, very helpfull. By any chance do you have the info of the shaft seal, I need the numbers printed on it in order to get it before taking appart the pump. with the part numbers my local shop can`t identify the right seal.
Thank you very much, keep up the good work!
Exelente vídeo sin inglés pero se entiende perfectamente .
Nice Video, do you think i can change the pump cover o-rings without removing the pump from the engine?
Hi , Thanks for the video(s), very well done , real step by step DIY video(s) , will you planning to do any video on Toyoto car (Rav4) ? your videos are big help to me, or anyone want to save some money to do it by themselves .Thanks again.
Wish I had found this vid sooner because I thought it loosened to the left and ended up bending the pulley
I have another question about solenoids: how I know if a solenoid is bad? If it doesn´t work good what to do? Just a new one? Or if to clean it can work good like before? Could u post a video about honda accord 94/97 transmissions solenoids? Thank you guy, you are my mecanic`s teacher.
Great video! Exactly what I was looking for. I am about to do this on my 02 TL-S the pump is very similar. How would I replace the bearing without damaging the shaft?
There is also a needle bearing in the rear cover. A shop press is the best method you could also try an arbor press.
If the bearings are badly worn they will cause uneven wear on the machined surfaces of the pump in which case a remanufactured unit is the best option.
This process the same for the 2.7 V6? Thanks!
Great video. Thanks! I have one question. Would you recommend replacing the fluid completely when doing this repair?
It's not a bad idea. To get the fluid out remove the smaller return line from the reservoir and put it into a drain pan. Plug the hole in the reservoir where you removed the line.
Then start the vehicle up and turn the wheel from lock to lock until the system runs dry.
Shut the engine down when fluid stops flowing out of the return line you don't want to run the pump dry for too long.
Refilling and repeating this a few times will get the old fluid out.
Busho, thanks for posting this video. Again, you've saved me a load of cash. So far it's working like a charm. I think I noticed a little fluid under the pump after running the car for a bit. I'll check again today after wiping it clean to make sure it's not left over from installation. The only thing I can think of is the shaft seal. I noticed after firmly tapping it into the shaft that the side with the writing on it was flush, but it seemed there was still a gap between the metal housing and the other side (with the spring). I'm realizing it's impossible to explain in a comment. Do you know if it's leaking right off the bat or will it take a few days to notice a leak?
Make sure it's fully cleaned and recheck. If it's coming from the hole in the bottom the shaft seal is the only place it could be coming from.
i hope i can fix mine like this. 2007 mazda 3, big leak out the back of the pump......the metal part, not the two flex hoses. it flows out pretty quickly. is it possible the lower section is electronically fried? i drove home 7 miles after the pump leak happened so i assume it is fine. there is no noise or anything, just a flowing leak out the metal section.
otimo video
Hello! great video. one question, I tend to have loose steering sometimes, it has play. I had a steering rack swap with a remanufactured unit. can the pump be bad? or a sensor or the preasure regulator? sometimes the steering is lose and the car changes direction without me turning the wheel.
all suspension components and wheels and tires are new.
any ideas?
thank you very much, keep up the good work!
Harika video profesyonel çok güzel oringlere sürdüğünüz sıvı nedir acaba?
my driver side engine mount is oily and seems like oil is coming from the tube on top of that (coming from the pump) what does it mean? reservoir is full (higher than top line when hot)
Hi, my 94 Accord started making ps pump whine noise and bubbles in the reservoir, no leaks and it still works as it should. My question is, with a reseal kit will help pump or is better to put a new pump?
Il this is old but can you help me , idk if the power steering pully bolt is reverse threaded or not I see you turn it right and it comes off so is it ? Idk if it’s that or if my threads are messed up and it’s stripped on their
Actually the pump is different past 1997 they redesigned the it and reduced the parts count. There are less seals to replace inside the pump you still have 3 seals. On the outside the control valve plate was replaced with a threaded plug which has an o-ring on it.
Does Honda of America provide a reseal kit containing all the needed "O" rings and the one seal or do you have to look up and order each part? We have a 1997 Accord EX 4 Cylinder VTEC with about 177K. I noticed several oil wet spots on the power steering pump. The pump makes no noise. I will order the needed parts and reseal the power steering pump. Thank you for an excellent video! Your video has a great close ups on the area of dis-assembly/cleaning/parts replacement and reassembly. The exact amount of detailed instructions necessary and you don't waste time on the obvious.
Unfortunately they don't you have to order the parts separately.
I've tried using aftermarket reseal kits in the past to save me the trouble of ordering all the part numbers separately from the dealer and the ones I tried we're incomplete missing critical o-rings.
Can U make a video how to change all the motor mounting ?
is that the same pump for 1999 honda odyssey?
there was no need to remove the rotor from the backplate since it came out intact. You could've replaced those two o-rings with the rotor assembly as it sat when you removed that backplate, thats what I did on mine just now....way easier not having to worry about losing those rotor pieces.
Removing the rotor is still a good idea so you can inspect the rotor and it's bore for debris or scoring.
If it's badly scored you're better off with a rebuilt unit. I believe I neglected to mention that.
Did the same thing; left the back plate assembly intact and just switched o-rings.
❤ thanks
Hi, I follow the way you do it to unscrew nut pulley is clock wise, but unfortunately my pulley was dented due to force removing my civic nut pulley clock wise and at the end found out anti clock wise Arggg... anyway thanks for the video :)
The Civic uses a different style pump which is why I specified a certain model and year range of Accord in the title.
Other than the pulley nut being a standard thread and a few extra components inside the Accord and Civic pumps are surprisingly similar.
***** Yeah, my mistake :( . I've download Civic manual but it did't says clock wise or anti clock wise.. I did search for you tube video for civic but fail...I'm so confident the way you do it haha..
Oh Btw, I manage to straight the pulley by hammering at the back...fuhh.. I'm lucky :)
What is the tool called that you use at 2:37? Do you have a part number for that?
Sorry, I wanted to say what is the reference number for shaft seal. Thank you.
Hi, can I replace just the shaft seal without take off the pump? If yes, how can I do that? Thank you.
Hey awesome vid, I will be doing this in the near future. One question though, how do you go about replacing the bearing if it turns out to be bad? Does it just press on to the shaft?
Yes it does and there's also a needle bearing inside the rear cover to check.
If the bearing is badly worn and the pump was run for an extended period of time the excessive runout can unevenly wear the machined surfaces inside the pump.
If the pump rotor, vanes, or bore is worn a remanufactured unit is the only option.
***** good to know, thanks!
@@Bushougoma hey man youhappen to have a 97 honda v6 2.7l timing belt replacement video
What is the part number of the shaft seal? Thank you.
Trying to torque my pulley nut, but the torque wrench is not clicking at 47 ft pds. I don't want to snap the shaft off. Used torque wrench on lug nut at same spec and it clicks no problem. Will tight as I can get it be ok?
Just get it snug and it will be fine.
Hi, what is the part number of shaft seal?
Hi, what is the internal seal reference number? Thanks.
also would it be the same for 99 accord. looks identical. and did u get all the o rings and gaskets in a kit from honda?
Very nice video, do U THINK I CAN CHANGE THE PUMP BACK COVER O RING WITHOUT REMOVING THE PUMP FROM THE ENGINE?
Yes you can. But the other rubber parts are in the same poor condition and you may end up having to remove the pump to replace them in the future.
I was thinking the same thing bush. But then I also thought in the future of the shaft seal is probably worn and maybe some others so we'll have leaks elsewhere. Possibly even in the bypass or I mean the high pressure bypass
Pregunto si quedó ya no siguió tirando aceite?
Where did you get those pulley pliers?
can you do a video on how to change rack and pinion on this accord?
Already did. Check out the Honda Accord power steering rack replacement video.
good video friend just one question where can I get the power steering pump bearing
If you're referring to the outer ball bearing it's pretty standard you should be able to buy it from anyone who stocks bearings if you find the code stamped on one of it's sides. The Honda part number is 91048-PY3-003. If you're referring to the rear needle bearing that's 91021-148-004.
@@Bushougoma If that's what I mean ball bearing (bearing) and I haven't been able to get it, they tell me it's not very common. I'm from CD Juarez Chihuahua Mexico friend. but thanks for your information and for your videos that have helped me a lot, I have an Accord 1994 dx 16 valves
Anyone ever use a power steering filter? Are they helpful or are they completely unnecessary?
What is the bearing number?
hi i have 2005 honda pilot, when i put new power steering pump do i need to fill it with oil, this isbecause for first second or two, when i start the car, (after topping off the reservoir of powe steering) the pump will run without oil .. is that ok..
It's fine as long as the reservoir is full before you start the vehicle. The pump won't run for too long before it primes and has a supply of oil.
Thanks much, do you recommend honda reman power steering pump or OEM. i heard cardone reman is not good. can i get used one from ebay.. or OEM pls advise.
sivaraj palanisamy I've used aftermarket remanufactured pumps without issue. Just make sure that it's done by a well known company.
Cardone is a major supplier of remanufactured parts.
where can I find the hoses from the Reservoir to the pump
+Chris Crayton The custom molded hose can be purchased from the dealer.
link for the snap ring pliers?
Mine say KD tools but I think Gearwrench bought them out Gearwrench 3151.
Hi, I'm from Venezuela and here these pumps are very expensive and that set of seals are not available easily to repair pumps. I have a 97 2.2 Honda Odyssey which has a massive leak of steering fluid. I wonder The pump that has my car is the same pump that you show in this video? & What part number should I use to order the set of seals? Thank you for let me know in advence..
The pumps while they look similar have different part numbers so they do vary somewhat.
Your local dealer should be able to get you the seal part numbers.
Thanks for your help. But Honda is leaving Venezuela due to the political issues here.. I can buy the part on the net.
Nicola Briceño Try hondaautomotiveparts you can get parts diagrams and look up the part numbers there.
Fine.. I'm going to check on it.. Thank you
Best thing to do is sell that car and leave that country for good. Thats what I would do if I were you, in fact that is what I did.
Is this the same for a 2003 Honda Accord?
They reduced the parts count considerably on the 2003 pump the process will be similar but the part numbers will be different.
Wow. Such a pity that we live in these times. That ridiculous disclaimer under the description. Good video tho.
Question. What’s that thing at 34:54 used for? It’s the part right next to the orange connector. The part that looks kind of like a wedding cake lol
Motor mount
@@Bushougoma oh ok. Thanks👍
I searched entire youtube. i think only you did video on power steering pump seal replacement. i found few but not detailed to this extent. you are unique..
1) One of my friend have power steering pump growling noise(honda accord 98). when i open the cap of pump i see foaming and air bubble.
2) I tried many methods to remove air from system.. like mityvac, then dead end to dead end.. no use..
3) Can you tell me if growling noise can come only from pump and not from rack.
4) If pump(based on this video, which part cause the growling noise)..
5) do u think if pressure testing power steering pump is ever needed. I thought of bying the tool, but dont see any one using it.
6) you have changed some of the seal that is not exposed out, (meaning it is inside the pump), so why do u want to change that, i know there should be a reason, but like to know why.
7) can a bad power steering fluid will ruin the pump, if so which part goes bad, any clue..
SORRY asked too many questions, because i found only this video in entire site that explains about power steering pump.
Air bubbles that won't purge (assuming the reservoir is full) mean's you have a leak somewhere it also causes noise from the pump.
The leak can be anywhere the high pressure line, return line, rack, etc. Start easy check over the rubber return lines pay special attention to the metal hard lines they connect to they like to rust through and leak.
I've never owned a pump pressure gauge never really had a use for one. You'd also need different adapters for different model years and manufacturers too which can get real expensive.
Power steering fluid contaminated with debris can ruin the machined surfaces of the pump and score the machined surfaces of the rack which can cause end seal leaks. Just like contaminated oil can destroy an engine.
Check out my power steering leak diagnosis video. It's for a 94-97 Accord but the layout is similar and will show where to check for leaks.
Thanks so much. Last Q, have u ever tested a regulator in alternator, i found no information about how to test. If voltage is high more than 15 or so, i assume regulator is bad, apart from this, if voltage is low, or voltage is zero.. i dont see how i can test it, yes there are so many other reason for error, like diode, slip ring, communator, so and so forth. i am more inteersted on regulator testing, any clue
sivaraj palanisamy
An alternator doesn't have a commutator it has slip rings they aren't segmented like the bars on a commutator.
No voltage output would suggest the brushes are worn, there's an open in the rotors field winding, the B+ fuse is blown, the regulator isn't getting power from the ignition switch, or on some designs the charging light is blown out. This is just a short list.
If revving the engine or tapping the alternator gets it charging again worn brushes are the most likely culprit.
A diode issue will cause a drop in output. You can check the ripple with a scope on the B+ post. You can also measure the AC ripple voltage.
To test the regulator full field it. There's usually a hole to insert a screw driver into. Check the service manual for it's location. If the alternator charging current (measured with a clamp meter on the B+ post) is within specifications the regulator is bad. If the charging current is low the issue is elsewhere in the alternator.
Only full field it momentarily to verify the charging current or you can overcharge the battery or damage the electrical system.
Most service manuals have a flow chart that will walk you through the troubleshooting process.
It's not really cost effective to repair an alternator when rebuilt units are so cheap and come with a warranty.
thank you very much.
That statement you made bush, about the commuter rings. You really know what you're talking about. I can see that now. Where did you get all of your experience and know-how. Anyway thank you very much for the power steering tear down as it was the best I have ever seen
Pump repair starts at 6:09
you could first break the bolt on pulley then remove the belt
+08yallvon The belt doesn't have enough tension on it to hold the pulley it will slip when trying to remove the bolt by hand. The easiest tool to use is an impact which is what I normally use.
