  • Antistress and Adaptogenic Effects of Ashwagandha
Continuing with the series about the effects of Ashwagandha. Today we will discuss the anti-stress and adaptogenic effects of this herb. Ashwagandha helps improve neuronal plasticity, regeneration, and reduce damage and death of these cells. Ashwagandha triggers the upregulation of HSP70 proteins to accomplish this effect. Let's review.

I've been a naturopathic Dr. For a good while. I have used the different types of ashwagandha ( Sensoril, Shoden and KSM 66 form) in my practice. Thanks again for all you hard work.

See my new comment on main page for study on adrenal hypo function from ashwaghanda. Other studies show a ~24% drop in morning cortisol with reg use. Caution should be used in any cases with chronic corticosteroids use (prednisone etc), confirmed clinical adrenal insufficiency (vs adrenal fatigue) or Addison’s Disease. Please read the study I give in main page comment. Newer ones show it’s acting like a hydrocortisone drug. Good in right application.

    TIMESTAMPS and SUMMARY
Ashwagandha, or Indian Ginseng is an Indian herb with adaptogenic effects that helps the body adapt to stress, reduces its negative impact, and has various other health benefits. This video continues the discussion and primarily focuses on Heat Shock Protein 70 (Hsp 70) and pathways affected by that.
00:00 🌿 Ashwagandha has an adaptogenic and anti-stress effect by helping broken proteins in cells stay healthy, which in turn helps the cells take care of stress and alleviate it.
01:52 Collection of STUDIES: Ashwagandha (Withania Somnifera) Current Research on the Health Promoting Activities: A narrative Review
02:23 🌿 used for over 3000 years helping the body adapt to stress and reduce its negative impact by regulating metabolism, acting as an antioxidant, and stimulating the immune system.Has been proven to have neuroprotective, adaptogenic, sleep-inducing, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, cardioprotective, and anti-diabetic effects.
03:24 Quick review: Dr Been covered these previously: Active Components are Phytochemicals Withanolides and Alkaloids. Anti-Cancer effects. Anti-Inflammatory effects.
04:00 TODAY: Adaptogenic effects of Ashwagandha and stresses both physical and mental..
05:46 🌿 How? Ashwagandha is a metabolic regulator that reduces stress-induced cortisol, hyperglycemia, reverses the increase in: triglycerides, epinephrine, creatinine levels, and interleukin 6, AST and ALT (liver enzymes) and helps with immune system changes.
08:08 🌿 Helps combat the harmful effects of stress by addressing dysfunctions within cells caused by increased cortisol and adrenaline/epinephrine levels which can cause increased: liver enzymes, gastric ulcers, sexual dysfunction, cognitive deficit, mental depression, immunosuppression, and other organ damage due to kidney dysfunction, and hormonal imbalances.
10:53 STRESS MECHANISMS: Proteins inside cells can become denatured (like a fried egg) due to various factors such as heat, acidity, inflammation, enzymes, toxins, and viruses, leading to cellular distress.
12:27 🧬 ***FOR this talk CELLS=NEURONS: Denatured proteins can become tangled and form clumps that can disrupt normal cellular processes, making it difficult for the cell to correct or digest these denatured proteins (especially in the neuronal system) and so they cannot be effectively removed by the caspase and ubiquitination systems. Then we need heat shock proteins, specifically chaperon mediated autophagy type systems, to help prevent protein denaturation and maintain protein integrity within cells.
15:45 Heat shock proteins help stabilize proteins (against denaturation or aggregations) during times of stress in cells, and can be increased through autophagy, intermittent fasting, resveratrol, and coffee.
17:27 🌿 Ashwagandha helps protect cells from dying and getting damaged under stress by upregulating the heat shock proteins (HSP 70 especially), which in turn trigger the JNK pathway for neuronal plasticity, regeneration, reduces cell death and senescence, and can prevent cells from becoming permanently damaged under stress.
21:30 🌿 DAF 16/FOXO Pathway activation: Ashwagandha helps protect cells by integrating various protective pathways, such as JNK pathway, AMPK pathway, TOR pathway, insulin IGF-1 pathway, and more.
24:35 🌿 Ashwagandha has adaptogenic effects, reduces stress, improves exercise performance, and has potential anti-aging and anti-cancer properties through the HSP pathway.
24:43 STUDY: Evidence Based Efficacy of Adaptogens in Fatigue and Molecular Mechanisms relate to their Stress protective activity
25:00 Phyto-adaptogenic effects and can help reduce stress by regulating key mediators of the stress response, such as cortisol and nitric oxide.Ashwagandha and other adaptogenic plants increase the expression of stress sensor protein HSP 70, which in turn enhances resilience and regulates resistance to stress, making them potential drug targets for their chaperone function.
26:00 STUDY: Heat Shock Protein 70(Hsp70) as Emerging Drug Target
26:30 STUDY: Adaptogenic activity of Withania Somnifera: an experimental study using a rat model of chronic stress. Ashwagandha has been shown to improve various negative effects of chronic stress in rats, such as hyperglycemia, cognitive deficits, and immunosuppression, indicating its significant anti-stress and adaptogenic properties.
27:32 STUDY: Adaptogenic activity of a novel, withanolide-free aqueous fraction from the roots of Withania somnifera. Ashwagandha has been shown to improve exercise performance, increase tolerance for hypoxia, and potentially modulate aging and longevity through various signaling pathways.
28:00 STUDY: c-JUN N-terminal Kinase (JNK) Signaling as a Therapeutic Target for Alzheimer’s Disease: Ashwagandha helps reduce stress, aging, and cancer development by increasing the HSP pathway, which increase the DAF-16/FOXO pathway making it beneficial for brain health and longevity.

In April 2023, Denmark banned ashwagandha.
Bearing in mind that we live in a world where scientific studies lack scientific rigor and that studies are often designed to show the desired results, should we believe the Danish authorities or the ashwagandha industry?

Plan on utilizing Ashwaganda shortly (following cortisol level test results) for 80-year old suffering from extreme intractable insomnia following vaccine injury - will let you know if it proves helpful; will be trying KSM-66 (root extract) first, if not sufficiently effective will then try Sensoril (root and leaves).

@craig8031 I'm in the same place with insomnia. Most nights (4 out of 7) I'm unable to sleep at all. When I recently added nausea to my symptoms, it prompted me to think about mast cells and histamine intolerance. I then did genetic testing (which is relatively inexpensive these days, for just the raw data) which confirmed some faulty histamine genes & enzymes. Good to know, as it's easier to treat those sx than the insomnia. Best of luck to you!

Ashwagandha is possibly safe when used for up to 3 months. The long-term safety of ashwagandha is not known. Large doses of ashwagandha might cause stomach upset, diarrhea, and vomiting. Rarely, liver problems, including severe liver failure and a need for liver transplantation, might occur.

I have been using this herb through knowledge of Ayurveda treatments. I use the powdered product 1/4 tsp mixed with Ghee and Honey in equal amounts. I think this is a good way to try the herb because you get the taste and if the body likes the taste then it is probably needed for a long as the taste is acceptable. So for a period of time, until the healing is accomplished. Then the body would reject the taste and one can stop the herb. One way to experiment with it's use.
