I agree that the 2nd-gens look better than anything that came after. 3rd gen got boxy & lost the curves, and then we eventually ended up with the catfish. I'm all about these 2nd gens.
Boy this brings back memories. We stored my wife's 77 TA for 22 years AZ. car. Stored inside, battery out, covered with engine fogged, axles hanging and every couple years fired up brought up to operating temp revved numerous times, and old gas siphoned out with fresh added along with sta-bil. Car fired up in 2009 and drove to the restorer, got full frame off OEM with minor modern upgrades, and car is like new today. Beauty!
That's a really neat story, and sounds like you guys really care about the car! I think these things look perfect with the right stance/wheels and a couple upgrades like you said. I also think these will get to be pretty valuable in the coming years.
In this video we have another Joe Dirt giveaway contest! Be on the lookout for him and comment the time stamp to win the Apeman A79 Action Camera! He's a little tougher to find this time since you guys CRUSHED it on the last video haha. Thanks for checking out the video. Lets give this Z28 a new lease on life.
That is an absolute beauty! After seeing that chrome radiator support cover, I was surprised to see the dash wasn’t hacked up to fit a highly advanced alpine pullout.
Back in the day as well it was really the first thing you did, put in an after market cassette player. However you didn't normally have to hack the dash up just the wiring harness. Great looking car I have an 81 Z28 as my summer ride with a hacked up dash..... lol.
I have an 81 Z28 350 with T Tops and a 4 Speed. Cool cars for sure and looks like you have a very solid and clean 40 year old car. Tough to find as rust in the 80s was a killer. Nice purchase .... lots of repop parts out there as well.
I've had my 80 Z28 since April of 94. I was 3 and a half. It's my pride and joy. My wife and I had our first date in the car, and she was a ford girl. But I quickly changed her mind with that Z. I wish this blue one still had the original N90 aluminum wheels on it. And the correct front grille with the Z28 emblem.
I wish you could keep both. I just got a white '85 Z28 and have been enjoying your journey with it, and thinking about what to do to mine. But I agree, the 2nd gen cars are cooler and simpler. I had a '79 Trans Am, black & gold with the big screaming chicken, and to me that was the sexiest car of that era. Wish I never sold it, but I was young, and it needed a lot of work that I didn't know how to do at the time. Looking forward to see what you come up with on yours, she looks promising.
My brother from another mother! I get rid of or paint the radiator tops black too. On my 69 Chevelle, I had chrome and I couldn't believe how many people would gravitate towards it and touch it. That was it for me. Like you said, that doesn't need to be a focal point. The peripherals are a box for the jewel in the middle. The engine.
It looks great. an 81 z28 was my first car. If you can get a factory air cleaner it actually seals to the hood. In the rain and snow you can see it getting sucked into the scoop.
That's exactly what I'd like to do. I think a more factory appearance is the right way to go with this one. The air cleaner will probably make no noticeable difference in power.
I bought a 1980 turbo trans am about three weeks ago, started doing some minor work, but paint and body I am taking to a professional, working a part time job to get the thing fixed. I also have a third gen trans am a 1983 going to keep both.
It would be a great place for line lock or nitrous too lol but my first car 68 Impala 327 had the bright switch on the floor and it seemed so awkward when I moved on to my 84 monte SS and it wasn’t there...
Sweet. This was owned by a very good friend of mine's buddy since high school 20+ years ago. It's a total time capsule that they have a ton of memories in.
I love the find. The Z28 is awesome!!!! That blue is amazing!!! I think it's the best purchase since the Trans Am!! I can't wait to see how this turns out. I was thinking about getting a 78 Trans Am, but this my come out a little cheaper for me. I'll be watching. I want to see what the potential will be for it👍🏿👍🏿. Keep up the good work brother!!!!
I hear you. Can't keep them all unfortunately! The GTA is in good hands now. It's had rear brake calipers, new tires, and probably a heater core done on it by now. It really needed a paint job, and I couldn't see paying to have that done. It's not worth it in the end financially.
You know, if this car sat right and had more modern wheels/tires on it I think it would be my favorite car out of the bunch right now. It drives great, looks great, sounds like the classic "muscle car" already.
God, I want one of these! You don't see that cowl flap working that often. A lot of times those are disconnected or stuck. Would be a lot cooler if it was a stick but it's still cool to see this on the road! I've had a '78 Type LT with the factory 350/TH350 and an '81 Sport Coupe with a 6.6 400/TH400. Both gone now but some day I'll have a true Z28, preferably an 80-81!
The Q jet if it has one will have fuel starving issues at the drag strip. The float shuts off fuel when hard g forces hit it from acceleration. I had a Q jet back in the day and it bogged all the time off the line due to fuel slosh.
The actual paint job isn't that good. It's had some respray work done to it, and unfortunately it's never going to be "mint" without new paint. I'll knock down the haziness though. Should be a nice cruiser/driver.
Hey man just watched the video. Very beautiful car. One thing that stuck out to me. It looked like when you was changing the spark plugs. The oil dip stick was on passenger side. If so that isn't the stock motor. The stock motor the dip stick would be on the driver side. By the sound of it might have a small cam in it. Might want to run the casting numbers on the block and see what it is and what it came out of.
Oh boy, I'll have to do some homework on that. the block was blue as it would be of the era, so I didn't think anything of it. I'll have to take a closer look at the casting numbers on it. Thanks for the tip!
I had a 79 z28 with auto and 3.42 factory gears. 70mph =3000 rpm. My buddy had a 4spd z28 and it came with 3.73,70mph = 3000 rpm. The difference was the converter slip in the th350. Awesome cars. Good find!
Interesting. So you think there mat very well be the factory gears in this car. I just can't imagine going down the freeway in it. You'd kill the engine in a day of driving lol
@@Greenlightfilming From what I have experienced in the past I would say it's very possible. Those cars really revved going down the highway. That's just one of many reasons they never lasted like today's cars do.
Totally correct. I had a monte ss with 3.73 . In drive, not OD she would scream at around 3 grand. That was locked up in drive. Fun car though. I also had a 78 z28 4 speed. Not originally a posi though. It had 3.73 and since I had 60 series tires on it, she was around 4 grand at 80+/-
I believe that the turbo 350 had 3.42 but the stick was changed to a wide ratio with a 3.08 for 1980. I know that was definitely for the corvette but not 100% for the camaro z28
Beginning of the drive and you start dissin the 2nd gen, 1st time you have ever driven one and you state it drives just like you'd expect a 2nd gen to drive. As an owner of a 2nd gen, I love the way it handles. Especially after I've driven my LeSabre. Takes me back to my simpler times when I was more worried about a bigger amp than a house payment. Could tell from the sound it had a miss right out of the garage, time is a killer. Good luck with the car, I'll be watching for tips from the 21st Century, to compare to mine from the 20th Century. My high school sweetheart is now my retirement project with my son.
I wasn't "dissing" the car when I first drove it. What I meant by it driving exactly like I thought it would, was because it's a slushy car compared to the late model stuff I'm used to. It drives great, and rides awesome. I'd happily road trip/power tour the car if it could run down the freeway at less than 3k rpms haha. I really do like the car, and will likely keep it over the Iroc-z I have because like you said. It's simple, and reminds you (and me) of simpler times. It's a rolling time machine.
@@Greenlightfilming 2nd gen was my dream car growing up in the 70's. Wanted one turbo'd. Back then there was turbo lag and stuff so I don't know how real my dream was. Different times now but I still have my 77 and the kid is into cars. Hopefully we move it forward,. Looking forward to some cool content from your new addition.
Thats a clean 2nd gen in the best color I think its a bonus it does not have T-tops i lived in a hot climate and I hated them in my 80 trans am. I think that one might be much too nice to let people run around a track. Thats a nice find... if I could afford it I would make you an offer on that Z.
This one won't be shared around the track, that's for sure. I agree on the color combo and not liking t-tops. I have them on my 4th gen and really don't like them. I never take them off, and all they do is make more noise and possibly let water in.
My youngest son brought a 79 camaro home yesterday... not anything nearly nicecas this one though!! Not a lot to expect from a $500 2nd gen though. Really enjoy your videos!
Hey, it's cool that he drug one home! Better off with something like that instead of no project car. Thanks for checking out the video. More to come on this one.
The second gen steering was awesome in it's day. I had a 79 Firebird in like 1983, I never met a car that could out corner me back then. The steering on this car must be loose.
Beautiful car, hope to see it in more videos. Had an regular 1980 camaro but being a true Wisconsin car it had badly rusted rear frame rails. Love all your videos. Ever been to automotion in the Wisconsin dells?
Nice find! This is a good looking car, with potential. It would be a real shame to see the white IROC Z leave the channel though, I was hoping to see more content.
Down here in KY these cars are run on the dirt track in a class either know as Hobbystock, streetstock, or bomer class! They make great racecars for dirt track racing in those classes!
I'm familiar with those classes. We have dirt tracks all over where I live. This car is way too nice to chop up though. No way it'll see that action haha
@@Greenlightfilming i again you have a nice find there! 2nd generation are my favorite Camaros. I drive an 85 Monte Carlo in that class! Thats awesome you have dirt tracks up there!!
First off love your videos especially the work you do on the cars. This ‘80 Z28 reminds me of High School rode in lots of these and I had a ‘79 T/A. Yes I agree get rid of the White Camaro this one is in much better condition and looks cooler too especially in Blue. Can’t wait for more videos on this car. Congrats.
Thanks buddy, appreciate it! So far I'm thinking about selling the white car. There's a couple of things I should repair first, but it would be the first to go if I had to choose right now.
My 2c is my 94 Z28 6 psd in 4th, 1:1 and stock 3.42 is 3k @ 60 and my 84 monte SS 3.42 was 3k @ 60. But who knows what speedometer gear is in it etc. cool car it will be fun to see progress. I have a few 2nd gen birds. Love them.
Man, maybe it does have factory gears in it. There's no way you'd go down the freeway in this thing for more than a few miles lol. I can't see it lasting.
Dang it looks really good why wouldn’t the owner get it running and drive it instead of getting rid of it I have a 1982 Z28 that’s really nice but the motor over heated and blew up five months ago and needing a motor bad I don’t want to sell mine but I’m struggling to come up with the money for it, I’m looking for something with like 350 horsepower with headers and a cam in it 👍
I'm not sure, but after having kids and a busy daily life, it's no surprise how a car just gets parked and people move on in life. It can happen to anyone as their priorities will change over time.
You know, I'd be inclined to agree. I bet some would argue that the 1st generation Z is better looking. That's debatable for sure. I think the 2nd gen cars around 79-81 have more "style".
You have to look constantly. More often than not nowadays, it doesn't seem to work out. You have to be there first, preferably with cash in hand. I'd sell the Iroc for 5k.
Needs a 4 speed swap. Camaro's are not cool as automatic. Especially being a z28. Get the original air cleaner for it to make the hood function. That hot air intake don't help anything. I did the flip over air cleaner trick at the drag strip and gained nothing. All it dose it make noise not speed.
Ole Joe?? 12:19
You nailed it! How in the heck did you find that so fast? haha. Shoot me an email with your shipping information at greenlightproducers@gmail.com

No nanny traction control or gps tattle tale. New cars relay how you drive and how fast and where it is 24/7. You have freedom with these cars
The older I get, the more I like the front end of the late second gen camaros.
You and I both. It's this style, or a split bumper for me. The latter is way more $$$....
Nice Z-28, still not happy you sold the GTA, you should probably keep the IROC so you have a 2nd, 3rd and 4th gen.

Won’t get mouse nests in the carb, that’s why the older air filters have expanded aluminum to prevent chew through

This car is awesome! I really like the paint job! It sounds great also!
It's a sweet car, I dig it for sure. The paint is "ok" on it. There's been respray work done in it's life that wasn't the best.
Yeah I ment the paint scheme but for a redo it aint to bad!
Really nice Camaro runs awesome they took care of it really well
Door handles must be a thing my 78 T/A DID The similar thing mine cracked
That must have been common, yes. It's common enough that you can just buy new door handles and they are pretty cheap lol.
That car is a nice driver.
Great find . I want one !!
Better be looking 24/7! Deals pop up and disappear before you can see them half the time nowadays.
Good stuff
You could special order cars back the, which could explain the high gear ratio
Interesting. I didn't see anything that seemed special on the build sheet.
2nd Gen Camaros r awesome! 🇺🇸 🇺🇸
You literally just did my dream
Best car I drove 1985 z28
They are pretty good cars when they are sorted out. I'd imagine when they were "new" they were pretty good cars.
Que hermoso auto saludos desde Argentina Temperley
I had a first gen Camaro in 1980. Let a younger brother borrow it and he rolled it. ☹
It was a 68.
Man, that's a harsh toke. Sorry to hear it! I've had quite a few people chime in with car destruction stories like this.
Ouch feel for ya Martin do you still punch little bros in the arm whenever you see him? Argh .....
It is the best looking z28 ever made in my opinion
You know, I'd be inclined to agree. I bet some would argue that the 1st generation Z is better looking. That's debatable for sure. I think the 2nd gen cars around 79-81 have more "style".
You call that buried? You can't even SEE my '67 big block Corvette!
I live in this area and i have a 2gen camaro
Sweet! They are great cars when they are sorted out
I had that same car in 1980 same color rims everything i been looking for a nother one
And mine had the T tops
I saw Joe Dirt clip 1:50, nice car!
Thanks James, wrong Joe though!
How do you come across all these great cars? Can you help me find a really good 3rd gen or WS6 TA? How much do you want for the white car?
You have to look constantly. More often than not nowadays, it doesn't seem to work out. You have to be there first, preferably with cash in hand. I'd sell the Iroc for 5k.
I want to say Joe Dirt 1:51 that's when you change from the dark to the light version
I know what you mean, but that's not the Joe in question.
Those door handles always break i owned a 79 in the 80s had fix it
I found out this was very common after owning the car. They are cheap to replace which is good!
put in Richmond 5ve sppd and fly at turns
how much did you get it for?
I'd keep it like it is
Nice car bro have 92 rs I will trade you
Needs a 4 speed swap. Camaro's are not cool as automatic. Especially being a z28. Get the original air cleaner for it to make the hood function. That hot air intake don't help anything. I did the flip over air cleaner trick at the drag strip and gained nothing. All it dose it make noise not speed.
Save some Z28s for the rest of us lol
No way Jose
You more than likely have 3.73 gears because I have 3.73 gears in my 83 SS Monte Carlo and that's about RPMs I see at 55 MPH
Interesting. That's probably the case, because 55mph is a very happy cruising speed. Not too much RPM on it. 70mph is no bueno
I have no idea where it is, is it 10:09
