I think a ton of people would get into listening to country music if they could understand it because the romanticized image of a "rugged-but-sensitive-on-the-inside blue-collar hero" could be very relatable to a lot of Russians. We came really close to having something like country in the singer-songwriter scene of the 1970s, with guitar-playing folk-poet Vladimir Vysotsky being remembered as a nationwide superstar. He's more of a Bob Dylan type of an artist, though: very simplistic in his approach to instruments, "utilitarian" melodies and rhythms, with the emphasis on the meaning of the lyrics. As for nowadays' state of things, the closest thing to a country-listener demographic that I could point out would be the "dad blues" scene, with its several bands of boomer enthusiasts - that goes for bigger cities, like Yekaterinburg where I'm from. Besides that, they play an occasional Cash song on Rock Arsenal Radio and that's pretty much it For myself, rediscovering country shortly before the pandemic and getting into Colter Wall, Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, Roscoe Holcomb, Tyler Childers, Sierra Ferrell, Kassi Valazza and others comes as an escape from immediate reality, something like an imaginary immigration. The bittersweet vibe of old-timey tunes keeps me company, living on the snow among the rooskeys. It also serves pretty well to rationalize the amount of hard liquor I guzzle up on the regular. I'm learning to play some tunes and play them for my friends and family, sometimes giving a summary of what the song is about when I sense interest

Saskatchewan is definitely the kind of place that would influence someone to make some old school country. I can say honestly that I am a metal head but there is a quality to Colters music that makes me enjoy it. Driving my old ram around the saskatchewan grids listening to this mans music is a relatively cheap method of therapy. Cheers dude.
