- How to Sculpt Hair in ZBrush Tutorial HD
Sculpting hair has been a highly requested video, so finally we got around to it! This tutorial serves as an introduction to sculpting hair in ZBrush. We’re going through simplifying the shapes and getting an understanding of how to sculpt hair.
The base mesh is made using Mesh Extraction which is then turned into a Dynamesh, which is in turned retopoed using Zremesher to get a clean starting point.
The main concept is to simplify it it down into very simple shapes and then adding details afterwards. If you’re going for an appealing sculpt, never sculpt all the individual strand. First off, you’ll drive yourself crazy, but it will also look weird.
We use the Clay Buildup brush (with no alpha) for most of the blocking, along with the Move brush. Once the general flow is working, we go over it with a details pass using the Standard Brush. You can also use dam_standard to make certain parts sharper. Also remember to use the smooth brush to remove nasty brush strokes.
Some general tips:
- Keep it clean
- Make sure the hair is flowing nicely
- Smooth it out
- Check the silhouette
- Work from general to specific
- Never sculpt all the strands of hair
This is a fairly quick and clean workflow and we hope you find it to be useful!

only video i found that wasn't a speed run. nicely done
Better than most paid tutorials. Thank you.
Excellent video that makes the hair look so natural and flowing. Great job-thanks a lot.
YES! Just what I needed! I stumbled on your video yesterday of the quick starter guide to zbrush and was inspired! Of course I went right to detail with some hair and botched it so bad. Thanks for the guide!
Great tutorial. You have given me a great first step in learning how to sculpt hair. Thanks!!
Very useful! Sculpting hair has always been a thorn in my side
Thank you! I am a student and learning Zbrush on my own, I'm used to Mudbox and Maya stuff so this is all new to me!
Thank you! You always show how to do things in a very easy to follow way! Life saver! :)
Very good and helpful tutorial. Thank you, sir!
Thank you so much. Very structured approach with nice results.
ey, ty for this video, i was looking for a hair sculpting tutorial and i found this, really really appreciate your work :)
nice work, thank you for taking the time to share your techniques.
Thank you so much for this tutorial!
Thank you for making this tutorial.

Great presentation, and very informative. Thanks.
Amazing, and simple thanks!
OMG thank you for this tutorial!
2017 here, still awesome for some of us who just getting into the subject. Thank you!
Thanks for this, it helped me a lot :D
Nice work dude!
Thanks, I needed exactly this. I have difficulty with fibermesh
Jesus dude, you are an talented sculptor! That detail is so freaking amazing!!
Informative, thanks!
Thanks, man!! Fantastic!!!
You are amazing! Thank you sooooooooo much!
Thx for the video and keep it up! Yesterday I started to work on a character's head and this video helped me a lot. Btw, my character has horns to,can you give me an idea on how to make them look natural while they come out from the hair?
I´m from future(Janaury, 2021) and this tutorial still very useful. Thank you so much and greetings for you from Brazil.:)
Thank you!
Love it! Thx
curious on knowing how were you able to subs-track the masking area at 4:04?
Thank you a lot!!
EXTRACT BUTTON after selected the mesh area! God, i always FORGET this and have to come back to youtube and watch this video again...
AWESOME and THANK YOU SO MUCH.. But I'd like to ask you a Question sir that.. The Face of her look-a-like Elizabeth Olsen.. Do you agree wid me too?
Very Cool ZBrush.....or can I call you Z?......just kidding! Nice video and well done, I needed to see hair done and how it flows and you nailed it.........Looking forward to more.....Mac in Boston..(40miles.North of...thankGod)
Thank you :D
How did you do the eyes? Theyre amazing!
Thank you =)
6:24 How do you silhouette individual subtools? I have 5 subtools on mine but when I hit V, it silhouettes the whole thing...
I thumbs up this video mostly because the girl gorgeous. The tutorial is also great.
Is it possible to add color to the hair, this way it can look like actual hair?
It tells me "NOTE: Mask must be cleared to DynaMesh"
What do I do? T0T
Do you recommend this technique for animated characters? We have a very small amount of hair sticking from my characters cap. Should I use this technique or some hair system on maya or max?
What is the advantage to sculpting hair as opposed to using realtime hair rendering with planes/fibermesh?
Maybe cohesiveness in the style? Or it's just a stylistic choice.
nice
You hope we find the tutorial useful?! I cant speak for anyone else but I was blown away!!!! How did you learn this? Computer graphics class? Simply amazing! I am probably the only one here not a sculptor I cant believe this! LOL
Takes some reading up and abstraction intuition. But above all else good references and lots of practice. Anyone can learn/discover how to do this, really. :)
im 15 and just started this, it's really hard because I find that most beginner tutorials aren't really for beginners. I've made a few things, none even close to this level but I was just wondering if you had any good references/readings to learn more about how to use all the tools and stuff. Thanks.
thank u u just saved my final homework
What mic / headset are you using?
Want to ask you never use alpha with standard brush sometimes for some occasions?
What is the material? Looks realy nice to sculpt organic.))
only thing I would do very differently is the push up at the scalp away from the head. i feel that straight up and then cascading down effect is far more natural looking. if you look at te reference you can see whati mean at her hair line, it grows straight up then falls.
4:22 how did you make the hair pop up more. Can I change how much I want the hair to extract because my hair is very thin
I am 3 years late, but this might help anyone who's seeing it now. Within the extract area there's a "thick" slider. The higher the slider the more pop-up the extract becomes.
how do you make your CBU brush so smooth?
after exttracting subtool my dynamesh won't work, how should i do? T.T
Can you help me? I'm trying to get the hair "helmet" to morph as nicely as yours does, but it comes down jagged and spikey.
Whenever I use curvesnapstrap brush (for hair strands) a message pops out asking me to freeze or delete subdivisions. I watched some sculp process and none of them seem to be forced to freeze or delete an subdivisions
how to make the stroke to fade out?
use tablet like wacom, etc.
13:11 how to do this fade out stroke?
Bro link for that material please ) !!!
does the hair move when the doll moves? thanks.
After extraction in model... polycount on separate geometries on head becomes high and is difficult to shape... should I lower resolution in DynaMesh?
Yes, set the extraction rez lower rather than trying to do it after the fact in Dynamesh. In general when using the Move brushes for large shapes it is much easier to use low rez geometry.
I am new in this... For this program, i can use the mouse normal or i have buy some pad?
Jesus Prieto You can use a mouse, however it is highly recommended you get a cheap graphics tablet, for example a wacom bamboo.
do you use a mouse or a graphics tablet like a cintiq?
Definitely a tablet. Near impossible to get good results using a mouse
I've been using a mouse but i'll see if a tablet will improve the workflow.
what I USE A MOUSE AND THE RESULTS ARE GREAT
Valeriane that's great if it works for you. however it is much easier and you usually get cleaner results using tablets over mouse. i've never seen a mouse used in a professional environment
well i actually own a tablet too, maybe i'll use it. idk i just find using a mouse a bit cool. but it's really handy using the tablet actually.
Are you using a tablet pen or mouse?
sculpt such a mouse is a torment
but if i make a character for a production...if hair is sculpted, how can it be rigged then ?
Do you have a tutorial on how to sculpt that girl model? It's very nice would like to see that.
how do i control the hardness of the stroke? ty
Try Stroke -> Lazy Mouse -> Lazy Smooth
Huh this guy kinda sounds like Henning from Flipped Normals 🤔
I think it need very good drawing basic.
im using a mouse...
i cant do the fading strokes :x
Buy yourself some cheep tablet with wired pen.
Am I the only one who prefers sculpting hair vs fibermesh?
References, references and references again.
Even if you draw them yourself they cut more then a half of the work.
That is a picture of my daughter. Do you have to get permission to use her image? She's got other great pictures of her hair.
Since she uploaded its on the internet - everybody does have a permission to use it as they like. Next time i gonna use it when i decide to sculpt duckface.
I'm sure she's got plenty of duck face photos to copy. I think if you are using us as fair use domain, you should site your source.
why? i dont think i should do something special in that case. I just take it and do whatever i want basically.
she looks like Elizabeth Olsen
Im sorry but i find that swallow noise really distracting. If you could either not do it while you record or edit it out that would be sweet.
+Austin Wolff +sparkes +Glossy yall cry too much
+Austin Wolff yea what the fuck is up with the disgusting swallowing
Austin Wolff poor men he cant even swallow... I wonder I have really bad sinus and breath really lowdly I.cant make youtube videos I think I wojld bother you to much... with breathing!!!
What a neurosis Austin!
Welcome to my world of Mysophonia
You said the first thing you do is add a base mesh without explaining at all how to do that. Lol! :( You guys aren't professional in your tutorials!
