  • How to Sculpt Hair in ZBrush Tutorial HD
    Sculpting hair has been a highly requested video, so finally we got around to it! This tutorial serves as an introduction to sculpting hair in ZBrush. We’re going through simplifying the shapes and getting an understanding of how to sculpt hair.
    The base mesh is made using Mesh Extraction which is then turned into a Dynamesh, which is in turned retopoed using Zremesher to get a clean starting point.
    The main concept is to simplify it it down into very simple shapes and then adding details afterwards. If you’re going for an appealing sculpt, never sculpt all the individual strand. First off, you’ll drive yourself crazy, but it will also look weird.
    We use the Clay Buildup brush (with no alpha) for most of the blocking, along with the Move brush. Once the general flow is working, we go over it with a details pass using the Standard Brush. You can also use dam_standard to make certain parts sharper. Also remember to use the smooth brush to remove nasty brush strokes.
    Some general tips:
    - Keep it clean
    - Make sure the hair is flowing nicely
    - Smooth it out
    - Check the silhouette
    - Work from general to specific
    - Never sculpt all the strands of hair
    This is a fairly quick and clean workflow and we hope you find it to be useful!

      im 15 and just started this, it's really hard because I find that most beginner tutorials aren't really for beginners. I've made a few things, none even close to this level but I was just wondering if you had any good references/readings to learn more about how to use all the tools and stuff. Thanks.

    only thing I would do very differently is the push up at the scalp away from the head. i feel that straight up and then cascading down effect is far more natural looking. if you look at te reference you can see whati mean at her hair line, it grows straight up then falls.

    4:22 how did you make the hair pop up more. Can I change how much I want the hair to extract because my hair is very thin

    • @LilyNionPrivate
      @LilyNionPrivate 5 років тому +3

      I am 3 years late, but this might help anyone who's seeing it now. Within the extract area there's a "thick" slider. The higher the slider the more pop-up the extract becomes.

    After extraction in model... polycount on separate geometries on head becomes high and is difficult to shape... should I lower resolution in DynaMesh?

    • @glennslingsby2630
      @glennslingsby2630 9 років тому

      Yes, set the extraction rez lower rather than trying to do it after the fact in Dynamesh. In general when using the Move brushes for large shapes it is much easier to use low rez geometry.
