Well Zbrush certainly won't be winning any awards for it's UI
That's for damn sure
ayyyy
have a nice day
Mr.Donut!. i hope you have a very nice day
They would if I were the judge ;) Although it may be a little difficult to get the hang of things it's my experience that the UI is flexible as heck: you can customize almost _everything_ thus really making the whole environment your own.
And not just that: it also has all the failsaves in place you might need in order to prevent you from digging a hole for yourself which you can't get out of anymore.
Seriously... I had to get used to the UI myself but after having used ZBrush for nearly a year or so I really love the UI and all the stuff I can do with it.
Actually there should be an award for artists sculpting celesial characters instead :)
One good tip for anyone watching this video, "DO NOT skip any seconds" it is all full of informations.
Thank you flipped normals and keep up the good works.
Thanks a ton! Really appreciate it, mate.
A free tutorial that does the job so much better than my college profs. Hats off to you sirs, you are life savers.
this is so true
yeah, i wish youtube was this good back when i went to college in 07
Sad truth
@Trantor The Troll I basicall agree with you, but when you life in a country like me where your degree is important, you are bound to college. I´ve got the same problem with profs who can´t teach anything and you need these kind of tutorials to get good grades.

Ya know, what I think rocks the most about this video is the empathy in the voices. What wonderful teachers who enjoy each other's company and the gift of teaching. YOU ROCK
I learned more in an hour than I did in a month-long class at college. As someone with a learning disability, thank you a thousand times for sharing this video! You made keeping up in this month's class a lot easier and saved my Portfolio project!!
Easily one of the very best videos out there for thoroughly covering Zbrush without being dry or overwhelming. Nice job and many thanks!
Awesome, thanks a lot!
This is actually quite a useful tutorial. It's kind of disappointing how many videos on UA-cam just have the uploaded talk about the same useless concepts in loop for ten minutes strait. In the first ten minutes of this video I learned more here than a solid twenty videos uploaded from other users. Thank you very much for a genuinely helpful and informative video. Please keep up the incredible work.
...just like someone said before - One good tip for anyone watching this video, "DO NOT skip any seconds" it is all full of very useful information. Thank you, guys! Priceless tutorial. I dropped ZB a few years ago for other 3D software, but after all your great tips was able to create a model on the go, simply watching your workflow.
I love the Dual Teachers "aesthetic" to you guys' tutorials - it's so refreshing and resourceful for having multiple perspectives. Your format is helpful, fun, and clean. I absolutely LOVE IT! Thank you so much for creating this channel. You're helping out a new Full Sail University "Computer Animation" grad! 🙏❤️
That's fantastic to hear! :D It's always interesting to hear whether our format works or not, so we'll keep this up.
This broke through that wall that's prevented me from starting to learn zbrush, thank you!
Thats great to hear! Good luck in your ZBrush journey from here.
@@FlippedNormals Also helped me a lot!
Fantastic! Love you guys. Thanks so much for your wisdom.
OMG I DIDNT THINK I WOULD SEE POGO HERE! XD

Thank you so much. As a person who can distract easly, I totally stayed in your video for every minute. It was so educational. Have a nice and healthy day!
Happy to hear we could keep you for that long!
I've been feeling super lost in my Organic modeling class and this cleared up literally everything. Took notes in a word doc for all the hotkeys and things i could forget and I'm definitely feeling a lot more confident to move forward. Super awesome and informative video!
I'm only half way through this video and have already learned so much more than any other tutorial I've paid for. Thank you so much!
Fantastic, thanks a lit Aimee! Let us know if there are any other ZBrush topics you'd be interested in us doing videos on :)

I just logged in to thank the creators of this video. The information presented is priceless and have massively help me to move forward on my learning. Thank you very much!
most charismatic tutors on the web.
this was not only Damn informative and user friendly, but also damn fun, guys.
Never stop not taking yourselves too seriously, it's SO refreshing!
This is one of the finest youtube tutorials I've seen for any subject!!! Great going guys.
I find it hilarious how videos like these, do a much MUCH better job at explaining all the tools and how they work and such, than my expensive university
Amazing tutorial! Three years old and still 100% relevant. Thanks, guys!
This is the best tutorial I've seen for starting out with Zbrush. Thank you so much - you guys are life savers!
Thank you very much!
The best intro to zbrush tut ever , period. Thats it no argumets.
this video is INSANELY helpful. quick. to the point. great explanation easy to follow. I legitimately had to take breaks throughout because my mind was blown by a few different key concepts you explained so clearly. THANK YOU!
I cannot my gratitude to you guys for this amazing tutorial. I had previous experience with 3d, but you explain things in a remarcable way. Thanks for showing us the basics!
Just a request: whenever you are mentioning shortcut keys, please display the same in text on screen.
Good idea - thanks! We'll see if we can find a way of tastefully doing this.
Each time he says the full name of the brushes, it is not quite difficult to understand the abbreviation...
Well, Ash needs the visualization, so I'm not sure why anyone is telling him/her otherwise. I agree that the letter combos are clearly stated, but some people learn differently.
Ash B,
I know your request is four years old, but why wouldn't you just turn on your "SUBTITLES/CLOSED CAPTIONS (c)" options.
I'm guessing this would solve this problem.
Coming from Blender, this is the first time I ever open ZBrush and I don't think I would've had the patience to bear with this UI if it hadn't been for you guys. Thank you so much for explaining everything so patiently and for giving people the encouragement and knowledge to pick up something so challenging for the first time 🙏
i’m so
It's been many years since I last used Zbrush but I've really missed it. Of course because I took such a long break from it I forgot everything i knew about the program. This really helps! I learned so many new things I've never known how to do before! I'm eager to get sculpting again! Thank you!
incredible tutorial. Watched the video slowly, stopping and trying, by the end of today I'm kind of familiar the very basics of zBrush, 4-5 hours-ish in. Thank you so so much, one of the best tutorials on YT in general.
thanks alot love the dynamic of two people teaching me. One person gets real boring, and honestly as a stundent i cant imagine how much more helpful it would be if a second teacher was able to hop in and give their two cents. We're all learning together, life isnt easy. shit too deep. Nice video
One of the most practical tuts I've seen. kudos! and thanks!
Best tutorial I've seen so far, thanks so much for uploading, ugh ! wish I 've found this one before, cause the others were like this one but on 15 different specific tutorials, here you have one that covers almost enterily how ZBrush works, outstanding, guys ! thank you :)
To me this was an excelent tut. I came out understeanding clearly the fundamentals, while it was light-hearted and fun to hear.
You guys have earned a subscription, I've been looking for something like this for awhile. Thank you for sharing, and I look forward to learning more from you two. :)
Thanks a lot! A lot more to come
I agree. Also subscribed. Thank you!
THE FIRST TUTORIAL THAT MAKES ANY SENSE! AND FINALLY SOMEONE TALKING ABOUT SHORTKEYS!!! :D (FIRST SUBSCRIBE THAT I CLICK IN YEARS)
No fast-forwarded video capture, step by step descriptions, simplified examples, descriptioning the important tools that we have to use oftenly in Zbrush.. I never encountered that kind of instructive tutorial even among the whole Gnomon Workshop tutorials until today.. Thanks a lot @FlippedNormals !
This course was a lifesaver! Totally starting to feel I have a grasp on the basics of this program!
This was a great video. I've watched a few different ones now, and this channel is definitely one of the more comprehensive out there. I'm currently a student studying the joys of 3D modeling, and while my classes and instructors teach me perfectly fine, these videos feel enjoyable. I am now subscribed and looking forward to more amazing content in the future.
Hey! Thanks a lot for your comment and kind words. I'm really glad you enjoy our content. More to come!

Where did you go for classes?
@@KombatKastle Full Sail University. I did my classes online. 29 months to get a bachelor's degree. I went for the game art program and focused on environment art, but they also offer a focus in animation or character modeling.
This is gold, thank you so much!
Glad you like it! Thanks.
this tutorial is amazing and it helped me so much. Honestly thought it was kinda gonna waste time cause it's so long but it was worth every minute. Thanks so much y'all!!!
Thank you guys VERY, VERY much for making this video. it was a great introductory crash course for someone that was very overwhelmed upon opening ZBrush for the first time. I'll definitely be purchasing some of the classes you offer as needed. Cheers!
I actually scale it with ctrl + right mouse button...find it easier...but great tutorial!
i've watched many tutorials trying to wrap my mind around ZBrush and i wish i had found this one a long time ago, as it's probably the best one. you guys really compliment each other and you delivered so many key points and helpful tips, without any fluff or other distractions. i kind of hate ZBrush but i've seen many people create amazing art with it so i'm learning to accept it and claw my way in. however, one thing i WILL NOT accept it 2.5D - WTF?? yes, i know it's a leftover from when it was a painting program but I Don't Care - Kill it with Fire!!
A Better Way to Zoom - hold Control (on mac) and Right-Click & Drag to Zoom. i find that it's more responsive & fluid than Alt/Click & Drag/Let go of Alt.

Waaaaaw you guys are so much fun to listen to! I've been using ZBrush for years and was looking for tutorials for some new colleagues, this is just awesome!
Holy crap! I just downloaded Zbrush today and from watching this video I’ve learned so much! Thank you! This was great! Can’t wait to see what I can do with this
You sold me on it
EDIT: i just checked the price...
@Trantor The Troll can you please send me the cracked version? I really wanna learn zbrush but unfortunately don't have the money to send on it atm :/

Fortunately the price, while high, is very cheap for a professional program(I use it in the toy industry) and is lifetime including major, regular updates.

32:07 How corona was made
Exactly 😂 I was about to comment the same
I'm on my second hour of ZB, and this was such a HUGE help. Thank you!
This was super great. I really enjoyed yalls banter together and how much I feel like I absorbed from it. Keep it up guys.
very few tutorials (even paid ones) touch the sculpting techniques, we need to learn how to make GOOD and CLEAN forms!!
We're thinking of doing a video next week on making good form and shapes. Stay tuned!
oh god, can't wait , and thank you very much!!
In my opinion, zbrush has the worst UI of any 3d software. It's also one of the most powerful. It's like they made a bunch of amazing tools, swallowed them and threw them up on the screen and called it a UI.
Completely agree - from a UX point of view, it's a huge mess... This is something you just gotta accept, unfortunately. It hasnt changed for as long as ZBrush has been a thing
Though you can make hotkeys for any button, like for example, for switching between custom UI, which you can also make, including custom on-screen option tabs(like spacebar menu), the number of which ZBrush terribly lacks by default, unfortunately.
i totally agree. good engineering, terrible design
wondering why?@@trentburrell
xD
I just started learning ZBrush and struggle a lot since all the tut I found are hard to understand or not for beginner. You guys saved my life! Thanks so much!!!
Guys this is the first tutorial I'm watching, you're giving me so much, thanks!
wish the UI of Zbrush was as simple as blenders or adobe.
me too
So why dont u just use blenders?
Evan Aditya well zbrush is a more powerful tool
@@janedoe6488 really? have you tried blender 2.83?
@@evan6246 Im actually really good at zbrush now. Creating your own ui and drop down windows (with short cuts) makes it a lot more handy. But im still 90% modelling in blender (even tho its using shitty cpu - remeshing and mesh count over 50k makes things crazy slow), just because the transformation and placing new mesh and objects is a straight forward.
Well... I have to say I'm a TON more impressed with zbrush AFTER watching your video. The UI is, as you an many others have said, mind boggling... overly complicated... and someone should be fired. Well, they probably were fired. Then, the next three people that tried to fix it had to be put in an asylum. In the end, they decided to leave it alone, to protect the designer community from more losses.
Other than that, my head kind of exploded there about a third of the way in. (info overload) I cut my teeth on 3ds max, doing mods for Morrowind. Now I can't seem to wrap my head around most other programs lol. Oh well, I still think I'm going to dive into this rabbit hole and see what's what.
Thanks for the video, and you two are amazing.
omg this is crazy, i spend alot of time watching other zbrush tutorial video ,and i always found out its not complete and kinda confusing sometimes (like there is something need to be explain but they dont) , then i found this video .and damnnnnnn this is like the most detailed version of all video i've watched before. reallllyy helps newbie like meeee . thjank you so much :")

You guys are about to help me become a 3D artist.
Whether you like it or not.
What have you made so far?
You guys are awesome! Do his foe maya 2018
Thanks! We're considering it for Maya and Substance Painter too :)
This is the best intro for people already working in CG - you explained the idiosyncrasies from a CG perspective, which have taken years to discover learning alone! Gonna check out your paid stuff now...
thank you! I was new to this, and my guide taught me without most explanation, and without most function, just the really basic one (which is only brush) . With this, I am more comfortable is navigating around zbrush now.
What a fussy program. Great results but it's like working with a spoiled child.
It took me half an hour to finally go on uncle google to get help with zoom in, zoom out settings up for this program ... So, yap..
What you call "fussy" i call "sophisticated".
@@chiefcaptn1922 Looks like we have a rick and morty fan everyone, guess Zbrush is only for those with the highest IQs
it started as 2D program for making animated movies. Thats why :-)
@@chiefcaptn1922it is easy to get it complicated but difficult to make it simple
Quick question: I just started using ZBrush. I'm using 3Ds Max everyday and who the hell made UI and hotkeys decisions? This is so confusing!
Learning and laughing is the best way to learn something. Thank you sooooo much. With this, you gave me enough power to try, to mistake, to take it all over again and to have patience until I am thankful with my sculpture. First time when I opened ZBrush I thought I broke it because I was just painting lines around but dunno the instructions.

15:08 You don't need a $2000 machine to run Zbrush, but you need an $1000 Zbrush :D (or monthly subscription) hehe
Literally just downloaded ZBrush last night, had no idea what I was doing except how to open one of those quick-start files and draw using standard brush. Now, I made an ugly little monster head with a distorted neck after watching your video! Thank you for the intro, I will definitely be buying your courses now

This was a very helpful tutorial. Thank you. I never having two instructors is something i would enjoy this much. I enjoyed every bit of it.
I always find myself coming back to you guys when I need a refresher brilliant as always.
32:18 you guys predicted the corona virus
32:13 this guy made corona before it was a thing.
Thank you so much for this you guys. Im brand new to digital art and Im going to be using ZBrush in school. This video has saved me soooooo much time.
This video is amazing. It has the PERFECT level of information! So many videos geared towards beginners move super slow. This video moves quickly, yet still explains enough to get people moving and making progress.
That's awesome to hear! Thanks a ton :D
32:08 he created covid 19 virus :)
While this is a good introduction, it was thoroughly frustrating to follow along/pay attention too. Both of you are joking and side tracking way too much. If this video is a reflection of the tutorials you're charging money for on your website, I am certainly not motivated to purchase any of them. Some examples of issues I had following along with was actually hearing the short keys you mentioned (tinnitus makes it difficult to tell if you're saying B, D, or E), as they're not displayed on screen, as well as both of you constantly switching off between each other and diverting down different, small tangents during demonstrations. Lastly, there are no text, or images showing your key-presses on screen while you work.
Like I said, this is not a bad intro, or video (granted, everything else on youtube is old, or poor quality), but it feels pretty unprofessional and while I can glean the info I need, I do leave this video feeling pretty frustrated.
Thanks so much! I love how the information is given efficiently and no time was wasted!
first time in Zbrush ! One of the best way to get into it. Thank you guys insane tutorial !
This is already clicking and I'm only 19 minutes in! Bravo! And thank you for making this super understandable!
Wow! So helpful, thank you both so much! I've always been intimidated by this "barrier to entry" I had imagined to 3D rendering, but this sound like something I could totally pick up with some effort, and I'm not afraid to try anymore!!
ive finally watch the right video tutorial in zbrush! thanks guys!
Thanks for this, been scratching my head for about an hour with the UI. Its all starting to make sense. 😃
this was one of the - best- tuto that ive ever seen......THANK YOU! now im more comfortable with zbrush ^^

The most fun I've had watching a tutorial, I adore your personalities! Dibs on a podcast!
Arguably the best Zbrush beginner Tutorial on the planet!
Thank you so much for this! I started playing with ZBruush years ago but got devastated by the 2,5 D thingy which I haven't been able to understand to this day. Glad you skipped it here and went straight to 3 D. :) I made a horrible monster head but this is more than I ever managed in ZBrush before, so I'm very happy now. :)
I was struggling through the Pixologic's 2 billion tutorial videos, one for each feature and menuitem, and was getting infomation overload. Then I decided to look on UA-cam and I found you guys. Thank you for breaking it all down to the meat and potatoes of ZBrush. I'll be alright now!
As absolute first approach to ZBrush, this was a damn punch in the stomach XD had to take notes on each shortcut and stuffs because I know for a fact that I'll forget half of them in the next 5 minutes.
Yet, extremely helpful and clear video, introducing it to amateurs with all the most needed basic tools (and some tricks and tips from who has been using the software for much longer)
Also, seeing you sculpt around really gave me a better understanding of how far you can get with literally 4 tools in total. No need to memorize half the brushes, yay! At least for the starters
thank you so much guys, i just started zbrush yesterday, and with your help i had an easy entry. It is a lot of fun i can tell so far :)
I love it. I've been trying to learn Zbrush for 10 years...
Woaaahhh you guys rock! Thank you for the amazing tutorial. Learned all basics of Zbrush under and hour: GOAL!!
