  • Zbrush Sculpting Tutorial for Beginners Series - Organic & Hard-Surface T-Rex Dinosaur 1080p HD
In this Zbrush Sculpting Tutorial for beginners you will learn how to sculpt a T-Rex Dinosaur with some mechanical parts.
This Tutorial series is aimed at beginners so it assumes that you have no or little experience in using Zbrush.
You will be covering basics at the beginning of each part of the tutorial before moving onto more advanced techniques. Repeating parts of this series is time-lapsed to save time. All the techniques that are used through the time-lapse phases are explained at the beginning of the video so you should have no problems following along.
Through the time-lapse parts, your instructor Max will commentate general tips and explain some theory behind his sculpting technique.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In this first part of the Zbrush Sculpting for Beginners series you will cover general UI, navigation using a tablet or mouse, views, matcaps, brushes, alphas, dynamesh, masks and sculpting in general.
The three main topics / tools that will be covered in this part are:
    - Using the clay buildup brush
    - Move Brush
    - DynaMesh
Once you covered the basic tools and techniques you will start off by blocking out the main body of the T-Rex using the move tool and re-dynameshing. At this point it is very important not to get discouraged if your sculpt does not look right. At this stage it is very important to get the main shapes correct and ignore smaller details. Once you have the main block done, you will create a turntable animation before jumping into part two of the series!

I just wanted to say thank you for creating this. it's incredibly informative, descriptive, clear, and engaging. I've just started learning modelling myself, getting ready to get into Zbrush, and this guide has made me all the more excited, even with this (what you considered) basic and rough form of a T-Rex. It's inspiring. Now to watch part 2!

All I can say is wow! I had to stop the video half way through so II could thank you. This is the most informative and easy to follow video that I have seen on zbrush thus far. Thank you for taking the time to explain each and every step, it is greatly appreciated.

This tutorial has gotten me started in the 3D sculpting/modeling area. My T-Rex is 50% completed and still working on details, teeth, claws, eyes and nostrils. :) Thanks!

I had to take a break from sculpting a few hours prior to posting this comment because I was getting annoyed but after a good break, I've come back and this tutorial has been so helpful to me. Thank you very much! This will help me with my University assignment and I'll definitely be watching the other parts of the tutorials. Fantastic tutorial and thanks again!

Very good tutorial! Many thanks for the basic-tipps in the beginning! It really helps beginners like me, to work with ZBrush so much easier! It's important to say every single klick of menue-button, mouse or keyboard-shortcut, to explain, how to activate this or that function! MOST tutorials miss exactly that and you ask yourself at seeing the video: "How exactly did he do, to create this effect???" Please continue like this! It helps amateurs like me a lot, to find a quick entrance into the software!

Thank you so much for making this, it's so hard to find an artist who will explain the tools and it doesn't run well enough on my laptop for me to just play with it till I learn them all. Especially wish I'd seen this before doing my first project. I hadn't seen anyone do the dynamesh select trick and it would have fixed the issues on it. If only I had more likes to give.

9:24 There's a key point where you clicked "Perspective Distortion" (P) that you forgot to mention. This makes the process work much easier for new sculptors. It keeps your project view flat for the beginning stages when modelling around your reference images. If you don't turn this off you'll find that when you move your camera around it doesn't line up with your reference. Hope this helps!
Edit: You do mentioned it further down the video 14:53 but not initially or why. :)

For anyone having issues with transparency, if you go Draw >> Fill Mode >> 3, you will get the same effect that he does in the video. If it's set to 1, you will have a transparent background and a solid colored material. Fill mode 2 = no transparency on either.

Just FYI, when the holywood version of the velociraptor became mainstream it was the 90s due to Jurrasic Park. They only proved velociraptors had feathers when they found feather wholes in the arms in a fossil discovered in the mongolian desert in 2007.
They did make velociraptors scarrier for movies, but not because they ignored the fact they had feathers, they just made them far bigger, velociraptors are chicken to turkey size.

It's actually more common for the Y-axis to be up/down in other 3d packages. 3dsmax, because of it's 2D drawing background for architects (being drawn top down and thus on X and Y in that context), never caught up with the more mathematical approach inside a 3D (XYZ) context of switching the Y and Z.
