How to wire custom LED tail lights! - Illumaesthetic

- This tutorial covers a large amount of the meat of wiring, when it comes to illumaesthetic DIY tail light kits.
Please note - This is a tutorial for a DIY kit. We are aware that this uses somewhat old and outdated technologies, however this is by far the best method of allowing the average car enthusiast to be able to build his own tail lights with minimal knowledge of electronics at the cheapest cost. We are aware that flexible PCBs, SMD, and other better manufacturing technologies exist - and we employ them in our finished product line (not in our DIY kits), but this tutorial specifically pertains to our DIY line.

“Sometimes they are a little big, sometimes a little small. You just got to deal with it” great words from a company I’d like to purchase from.
Yeah I was drinking the same but really, what can they do about it. It's not like they're making the LEDs, even if they were, keeping things within such a tight tolerance is kind of difficult. I'm a machinist. I deal with this stuff everyday and pass things that aren't perfect. Wouldn't make money if you scrapped half your product because it's just a little off.
i see why custom tail lights are $2k now, crazy amount of work
Facts
I installed a new custom tail lights in my M2....I some drunken idiot crashed into my car weeks later...bro 😭😭😭😭😭😭...!!!!
For one this is what makes the car culture amazing especially when you go to events and you see actually custom fab and mod work it’s a work of art. It’s not just your eBay Amazon slap on aero kit / wide body / tail lights copying audi. I like seeing the non perfection becoming close to perfect and you can tail it’s hard work with your team late nights
Proper work !
Great basic tutorial! I think I am not alone when I say it is a confidence builder to see how this all comes together without any "wizardry". Thanks guys, I believe I will be contacting you soon about a project :)
Thanks for posting this video. I've been wanting to try something like this and you're making the learning process a million times easier.
Thank you everyone for the feedback so far: since its been brought up a couple times, we wanted to make the following clarification -

illumaesthetic what the template made of
Awesome website. I have been manually calculating resistors until now. Thanks! 😃
Stoked for your video series.
Easy. Thanks for the link to the wizard 🧙♂️ never knew about that I always just used ohms law
Had no idea you could do that. It's awesome.
Great Gran Turismo music choice, had to say that ;-)
LIF beat me to it
Facts its so fire 🔥
As a fellow GT fiend I concur with that statement 👀😁🤣
That's pretty cool looking.
amazing work am glad to see you how you work and also thanks for teach and go with more videos
Great work
Sir I like your work
5 years of litebrite has trained me for this day...
Amazing I will be learning a lot from you Guys
Just checked out your site, super cool. I need someone to get a kit out for an 89 c4 corvette.
Great job!
Awesome job man!! Congratulations! I'll try to make some stuff using this concept.
Have done this.. in a front light... the leds did not get aligned to the same direction... if 1mm inclined to a different direction.. it will look bad...
So I'm trying to do that acrylic tubes whit a tiny dents and just one super led up to the end...
Let's see if works...
Great video...
Soaking this content up like a parched sponge! :D I've always wondered how so many LEDs are run like that.
Something I'm thinking about now, I could print out diffusers with translucent PETG in various shapes to even achieve OE like appearance! (Think Audi or even VW's new taillamp designs!) :D
Nice made
I love to have build one of these for gc8 coupe.
So it does not matter if the resistor goes in front or rear as long as u have one in the series ?
Time to upgrade on using a CAD program to create the circuit trace outline, transfer onto a copper board, get it etched and tinned. Upgrading to SMD resisters and high quality Philips Lumileds Superflux LEDs and/Luxeon LEDs....I used to build taillamps with these components years ago. Got all my knowledge from the guys at Hidplanet.
EXACTLY what I was thinking. This process would be so much more efficient with custom circuit boards. Watching him individually solder all the leds and resistors frustrated me haha
Bro what material can i use as the base panel?? And I have another question How can i bend a pcd board???
Awesome!
Hi, I have a question about the DIY kit for the 04-05 impreza taillight (heart circle only), I currently have totally stock taillights, would I be able to have only the heart circle module installed or would I need to install a complete LED taillight before I can install the module? Basically, can I install JUST the heart light module for the 05 impreza on a stock taillight or are there other modifications I would need to make beforehand?
Liked because the gt music;)
this feels like an insult
voltage is 14.4v good video
voltage varies by car/strength of alternator, and we have voltage regulation modules to set it to 12 when the vehicle is on
if i purchase the illumaesthetic 12v regulator, do i need to purchase the Ghost lighting or Corsomotion module as well??
Lmao the Granturismo 5 music, love it
Where can i get the plastic or whatever you use to insert the LED's? Do you have sheets prepared to be cut down to size, or do you make it yourself? Thanks
How would you connect one 5 series of LED’s to the next section. Also if you have 1 led left after sections of 5 how would you do that one
Very nice video, can you show a little more in detail on how you hook each section together with the bus wire.
we will try to touch on that in the next video
No one makes an aftermarket tail light for my 07 Audi A8L Do you guys have any kits?
FANTASTIC! 10/10 Would watch again mindblown.jpg
so how does the night on lights work on those bulbs? does it show dim on night on and bright when brake applied?
Would you guys think about making a diy kit for a 1995-99 mitsubishi eclipse? Always wanted to make my set up including the middle piece and your laser cut panels look like they will make life a lot easier lol
Same with the 2006-2012 eclipse please!
I know this video is older but I was wondering if these fit on a 2007 G35 Sport edition
Can you guys make a video for motorcycles? I want to do a brake light and turn signal configuration but have no idea where to start
Do u make them for 2006 scion xb I wanna do the raising sun 😁
Hey. What material is the mask made of and how thick is it? Is it difficult to fit it and what to glue it on? I want to buy your MS 3 hatchback.
didnt get the part at the beginning, what LED at the moment using and what LED's you recommend??
Pls do video For w203 Mercedes and link in description from where to buy parts
I'd like to do my 3rd gen mazda 6. Do you make anything for that model? I didn't see any on your website
Where can I buy those LED panel boards with the holes in it ..if I can't buy as an individual ..what material is it made out of so I can make it my self..plz help want to get my business started plz help
Very nice job. What is the material called the base, plexiglass or what?
Question, hopefully someone can answer this.. for this demonstration, since he is only doing these two groups of 5, he connected the (-) ends of each 5-diode chain to eachother, as well as the (+) ends of each chain. However, if he was doing ALL of the diodes for a given color, how do the chains all get hooked up?
the positive leg would go to the next group of leds as well as the negative leg to the next group. in this example he used copper wire as his "next leg". notice how he used jumper wire to get to other groups of leds. this is just a large series circuit
when are you makign 2004-2008 Volvo S60/R panels? :):)
can i send u a pic of the led board i have for my hot rod i need 3 more ,and the place i got them from went out of business ,they have 36 led's 13 resitors , i can't find them no where been looking for a while. Hopefully u can help me.
Thanks
Do you carry any cutouts for a 2006 tsx tail lights
Where can someone get the LED placement boards? So they are all evenly spaced.
Need to make a video on using the white pexiglass mold which is used for the white diffuser for solid lighting to show ppl how to set up lights behind that white diffuser instead of always exposed LEDs..if that's kool with illumaesthetic
do you have a kit for 01-12 ranger. be cool if ya did.
Any chance you guys can make led lights for a Volvo 850 wagon?
Where can I get that black molding that the LEDs are put in ? Are there any other materials I can use to substitute for it ? Someone PLEASE HELP I really want to give this a wack !! Thanks in advance !
Ooo can you make the led move like add anime I want Pokémon Squirtle in the tail lights
What if the lights are too bright and when ur turn in the brakelightsbon they're too bright and when u press the brakes they barely change
Did this diy in 2007 on my audi on aluminium and drilled it so the leds are all pointing in the same direction even when curved
Link... Let's see it!
Are those panels 3D printed, or what is the material you guys use? Just wondering on rigidity of it.
Do you make anything for lexus ls430?
how are the panels formed after cutting?
where can i buy a good assortment pack of resistors?
Dope👍
Are y’all ever gon put a Mercedes Benz c300 kit on ur site?
How much would you charge for some custom tail lights on a 2008 acura tl?
Where can I get bread board to make a custom panel?
Wish you guys sold a kit for 97-03 f150 tail lights
I do have a question though. It might be really obvious and sound stupid. Okay. So some LED tail lights, the whole shape comes up as a whole but with some you see the individual bulbs. How do you end up with one or the other?
what is the thickness of the acrylic?
How much to have a set complete and ready?
Is it possible to get a custom size for an 05 Subaru Legacy GT
second this
I would love for you to do q50 for me!!
I thought you have you wire the resistor at the end of the cathode leads? Why did you solder it in the middle of the groups of 5?
FlyRydeCustoms i could be wrong if the resister lead the pack it’ll cut the volts down right away but each light will drop volts per bulbs. You can also add resistance on the ground side... some dimmer switches for your dash are resisting the ground wire adding resistance slowing the draw. Like headlights if there ever dim or one is and it’s a new bulb to much resistance at the ground (dirty ground) will cause a dim light.
Do the sell this for the lexus sc300??
Scion tC 2007 can they make it lol
Can I get some made for a caprice. I have 78 caprice with 77 tail lights I have already made custom lenses but really wana go sequential.
I was looking for my 78 impala
What are the panels made from
Do you custom work for people?
Please make an output for civic esi
From philippines
Bro what is the bame of the black sheet in which yu have installed the led?
Plastic polymer I’m sorry I’m three years late brother
But don’t you want the resistors after each 5 leds or am I missing something there? 1 resistor after each series of 5?
It doesn't matter where in the string of 5 the resistor is. Could be before, after, or in the middle.
any particular reason to use independent leds instead of creating light boxes behind the front face and just use LED Strips? seems like a whole lot less work to me, and also less stuff thats prone to break aka a trillion led solders...
Due to programming I'd say... but why not, soldering is fun
Why use 12V and not alternator current of 14.7?
Race cars only? Nothing for my Silverado?
Please make taillights for 1989 prelude
How to order the parts
sick tutorial. sadly no options for the 3000gt... but I always like a challenge.
Pretty sure they could do it for you.
Is there a website or do we email directly?
Is that a g35 taillight?
What size are the LEDs !?!??? 5mm??
Ok cool thanx
Just wanted to throw this in because it happened to a friend. He designed in cad a lighting setup and sold it as off road use only. Got sued by a guy in USA because it wasnt dot legal. THESE MODS ARE ILLEGAL in most places in the US. Unless your state doesnt require safety check. This is a show car not driven on the street mod only.
What material are the black panel boards with all the holes made of? Can a guy get a flat sheet for cut to fit and form it? If so please let me know. I would really appreciate it. Thank you!
Plastic polymer that's the same material as most automotive lenses. You can, but we use special tooling/techniques to get it shaped and cut the way it is
So you say then that since a special item used for your work you are unable to tell us where to find it or buy it?
Mark Wright. Alot of people could figure out how to do this easily. It just takes patience and time.
yes, because it is a product we produce to sell to you so we can pay for rent and food :)
How thick are these sheets?
Taka cepelia troszkę :)
Make a video of you customizing 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon/XL/Denali
wow
So when u use the ground rails u connect positive to negative?
🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:17 🔌 Illumaesthetic DIY tail light kits come with pre-cut, pre-formed laser-cut panels, specific to your vehicle.
00:55 💡 Use high-quality LEDs for your project to avoid issues with lower quality ones.
02:02 📏 Materials needed include a soldering iron, solder, assorted wires, wire strippers, pliers, and an adjustable power supply (optional but recommended).
04:06 🧮 The Yellow LED Array Wizard is a helpful tool for calculating LED and resistor values for your project.
08:10 🔌 Plan your LED wiring by grouping them for different sections and arranging them based on the resistor values calculated.
09:34 🧰 Fold LED leads and solder them together, ensuring proper connections for positive and negative terminals.
13:14 🔥 Use a soldering iron to make secure connections between LEDs, ensuring a strong mechanical connection.
16:18 📏 Test your LEDs with a power supply to verify that they work as expected.
18:42 📦 The final result should have grouped LEDs, ground rails, and power wires for different sections, all soldered together for your custom LED tail lights.
Note: most car tail lights require being laser cut to open which most will not be able to do. Also, most tail lights can't be baked open like headlights which is why they need to be cut. Good luck though.
Note: or just use a rotary tool and not be a pxssy about it.
@@bp3120 yep, use a rotary tool which doesn’t make clean cuts and will be visible through the light.
Where can you find the backplate? Your link is dead
backplate is sold on illumaesthetic.com
Thanks!
