The reason for the decap after sepuku.
Sepuku is the ritual action. The decap is basically a mercy strike so the person doesn't suffer.
If it is just decap it would be viewed as an execution, rather than ritual (ending).

Has there been a character that’s wanted to die more than Nagakado without actually saying they want to die. What a surprisingly brutal death that was, had my jaw dropped for the entire ending.

First time a show really had my jaw dropped, sht was just so quick and unexpected.
He wanted to please his dad so badly that it unfortunately sent him to a early grave. I can at least say although Nagakado wasn’t the brightest kid, he was one of the most fiercely loyal of sons I’ve ever seen in television.

No, Toranaga did receive the message last episode that Sugiyama was killed by "bandits" he just does not know that his brother was already his replacement, because he does not know Ito was added beforehand. And the head in the box, was Yabushige's eye-patch general Igarashi, as mentioned in the episode. He sent him to secretly maintain friendship with Ishido in ep 5. I love Yabushige man, he is reminding me of Starscream, both GOATed
Yabushige is a bloodlusting, back-handed scumbag, but he's so bumbling and obvious in his scumbaggery that it's almost endearing. He really is Starscream.

FINALLY somebody says it, buntaro is a tragic character and its both their flaws that fails them. mariko is prideful about her family and status which was why she was initial displeased with the mariage since her family is a step above buntaros, whereas buntaro, despite being an "ideal" man for that time, hes very insecure and he lets it eat at him to be come abusive.

This episode confirmed that for me. I finally understood his character and roshi explained it perfectly. But the next episode ALMOST broke me because I did feel sorry for him but he's still an abuser 🤷🏾♀️
I took it that Buntaro was disgusted to being married to a dishonored family line. They were happy before her father killed their liege making him almost guilty by association and took out his anger on her.
@@taurussgoddess abuse comes in many forms, and just because someone isnt physically violent doesnt mean they arent abusive. Mariko emotionally iced him out, kept him at a distance, and begged for suicide throughout their marriage. When a barbarian finally appears, she clearly gets emotionally attached to him while married and continues to lie to her husbands face. Yeah, she isnt beating him and yeah he has no excuse for hitting her, but she is also emotionally abusive.

Buntaro has been emotionally abusive to her the whole season and physically abusive in episode 5. She got close to Blackthorne when she thought her husband was dead.

For the seppuku scene at the beginning; the person assigned as the 2nd (The head chopper) is a mercy. The person is fully expected to kill themselves by cutting open their belly. If they were seen as not as being worthy, those that ordered the seppuku may not assign a 2nd so that they have to feel all of it.
Worthy as in not showing signs of extreme pain like screaming

If they didn't have an attendant then they'd just stab themselves in the neck or heart as a final part of the ritual act, or fall on the blade such that it pierces their chest.

In the duel part, Blackthorne never winged a katana, so he tries to use it as he knows: as a rapier. That one hand stance is for fencing
Sheera isn't completely wrong about Toranaga having a plan and Gin (the woman that runs the teahouse) being onto the things going on.

So, Blackthorne knows the Japanese words for Crimson Sky. When Toranaga said that...completely weirdly and out of any meaningful context...he looked to his right, in the direction of Blackthorne, who then gets up and makes a big scene. Just like he did when they needed to get out of Osaka without being searched. Its almost as if it was some kind of prearranged signal or something.

The person who (always stands to the left) side of the person performing sepukku is known as a "second". The person doing that role is supposed to be so skilled that they are always supposed to chop the head enough down to the last bit of neck so the head is to hang and rest in the hands. If it went clean off it off, then it was disgraceful. What we don't see in this series we do in the original is the authentic ritual where the person performing sepukku writes a poem beforehand and puts his last thoughts and feelings into the poem.
The person committing sepukku is not to show any signs of pain or hurt whilst doing it or they disgrace their whole family. The person as the second if they don't perform the ritual properly they also disgrace themselves and their whole family. It required a perfect performance or shame on both people. The moment and spotlight ,going out in a blaze of glory, was all for the person commiting sepukku and the person who was the second is like the shadow and must not bring attention to themselves during the ritual or they mess up the whole performance.
It's mad when you understand the whole thing what a sad and grotesque art form it was.

This episode highlighted how flawed of a character Torunaga truly is.
Yes he is a great leader with a high IQ, but he's not leading his closest companions properly. Not even his own son.
It's easy to trash on his son and call him an idiot for being so gung-ho, perfectly represented by how silly he went out. But Torunaga is partially at fault for not properly guiding him. Leaving him out of the loop since episode 1 and just ridiculing him for the matters he took into his own hands without properly teaching him the best choices he could have made, can you blame him for saying fuck it and dying on his sword instead of just giving up?
This is also exemplified with the other characters, especially Blackthorn. Torunaga is honourable and well respected yet he's being wishy-washy with his agreement with John.
The flashback in this episode was an excellent layup for this it's focus. Torunaga was victorious, but he was not this flawless alpha male giga chad that he was perceived to be. Even when he still has secret schemes to get out of the situation he's in, those intelligent aspects of his does not make him a good leader to his followers.
Uhh??? Toranage explicitly took his son aside in episode 5 to teach him what he did wrong and didn't even really punish him for his mistake. He took his time to try and teach his son. It's just that he's also busy preparing for a war and simply does not have the time to guide his son through making all of the right decisions.
The reason Toranaga isn't giving Blackthorne back his ship is because Blackthorne could just fuck off into the sea the moment he has it back. The Book gives us insight into Blackthorne's POV and he was specifically planning that, especially when he thought Toranaga had given up.
You are right that Toranaga is not a flawless, alpha male, giga chad. Those types of people make for boring characters in stories like these. But I feel like you haven't given him the credit he's due? The reason the son died was because he was reckless and short-sighted, to the point where he didn't even consult with his father before trying to kill his uncle. There was no reason for him to risk his life like that apart from the son's own romanticization of battle.
I'm pretty sure Toranaga knows how Blackthrone works and thinks. We have seen so many plays and long cons from Toranaga in 7 episodes I don't believe for one second he is just rolling over and Blackthone is now possibly the lose cannon he needs to make some kind of opening. Chekov's hawk XD

And this is why I love that Roshi actually took the time to understand Buntaro's character. He was spot on. The speaking on one side of things and being so "pro anjin" was getting annoying.
They got it wrong. His only positive trait is that he's an excellent warrior but is a blockhead who doesnt understand nuance and subtext. Everyone in the court and even his enemies figured out that it was most likely Toranago who ordered her father to perform the execution which is why she is still so respected. He is a tragic character though in that he fucked up his marriage to a great woman by abusing her since the start of their marriage due to his lack of social ability and insight, while still desiring her and wanting her love for years, but doing so by double downing on the abuse and role of "strict hard nosed husband", which completely alienated her.
her reaction to him is because he failed in every aspect to be a proper husband or father to their son.
That ending Bruh, how you try to sneak somebody and you end up dying like that 🤦
While committing Sepuku the person will disembowel themselves before being beheaded, the one who delivers the beheading is referred to as the second. So in Toranaga's flashback he was requesting no one behead him except for Toranaga.

Actuallt Roshi is ded wrong. Mariko and Buntaro only started going wrong when Mariko's father was named a traitor, and he started disrespecting her after that. He literally talks about it during that dinner scene with John. He's never given her any affection or warmth since then, and with him denying her death every year, her heart and behaviour HAD to grow colder to protect herself and her grief. She was never the problem, HE was.
the husband treated her like shit since the start due to the "dishonor" of her family name. He's blunt and lacks nuance, so he didnt realize what the rest of the court knew as subtext, that her father had followed Toranaga's orders to kill the leader of the time. He ignored that she was a graceful, capable and wonderful woman, spending his time belittling and abusing her which alienated everyone else from him as she wass well respected by everyone else). Due to her actually being a great person, fell in love with her but kept being conflicted about the entire surface level "dishonor" thing while still wanting to woo her into loving him, which he went baout doing by double downing on the entire "strict hardnosed husband" speal which he extended to his son, further alienating her.
His life long treatment of her is why she is cold towards him. He had persistently failed as a husband and father. Its why everyone else in the court behaves as they do with him.

They changed Buntaro quite a lot for this show. He is not that much of a simp for Mariko in the book and he is a true monster as well. They made him more likeable and tragic for the sake of the show.

I think Mariko and Blackthorne were only together the one time. And he did not send her husband away for seven days so they could hook up, at least that is my read of it. It was more a cool off period.
