Wiltshire Man Visits the Pendon Museum with the Vintage Motorcycle club

- To be honest this visit was fair more interesting than the title, thumbnail and video portray. The scale and man hours and attention to detail is simply Staggering.
The museum was started by John Ahern who could see the rapid changes to the villages and he wanted to preserve as best he could what he saw before it was all lost. He did this by creating scale models of villages, cottages and lanscapes. Simply AMAZING. I would encourage anyone with even a slightly sentimental attitude and love for the land to go and see this for yourself.
Here's a link to Dickies first ride on the new Himalayan 450
• The good, the bad, and...
With my motorcycling I am gravitating more toward the lower powered easier and cheaper to maintain and run and handle type of motorcycling.
Who wants to go fast? Not me any more so my old 411 is just the perfect bike for me it's all brought and paid for and owes me nothing but still does everything I need it to do.
1954 Triumph what a Beauty.
Great ride out.... a slow pootle round the rural lanes👍
It sure was
The models were fantastic. I also love the visions of village life before our modern times. Daily life may have often been hard by our standards, but to me it was such a beautiful architectural period.
Great day out with your biker mates, can’t beat it! Thanks for the video WM👍👌
I see museums, old films, photographs, and peoples memories as the closest to having a time machine for the mind. Oh how I would love to transport the rest of me to past times!
A lovely time had by all including all of us ! Glad your likely to keep the 411 bike it goes along lovely, great club meet up and ride out, thanks for sharing Sandy 👏 👋
That display is mind boggeling! A truly amazing thing!
A nice ride out with good friends on their classics.
Thanks, Sandy!
That was amazing. 100 years from now, people will be watching your videos, thinking the same way you did at that museum, and appreciating your work to capture your surroundings. 👍🙂🏍️
I think I'm a bit sentimental about old things and old ways of life and about the countryside Brian. A good thing I think. Apparently it's a family thing as a Great Uncle once wrote a poem about his childhood back in the late Victorian times and he was very sentimental:)
Many thanks Sandy
I have to say, that out of various channels I watch ,when I have time ...
Motorcycle old types ...and canals boats .
Yours is my favourite, then Paul Henshaw, at Performance Classics..
Well done Sandy....
Hahaa Thats very kind of you to say:)
Always love you combination videos…vintage motorcycle ride and model trains …two of my favorite things! Keep it up Sandy
Proportional detail is fantastic sandy , a very remarkable chap a lot like yourself 🇬🇧👍🫶👌
You said all the right things about your Himalayan, that’s what motorcycling is all about, and motorways who wants them when your touring, they weren’t always there we all travelled on A and B roads, that’s where the scenery and history is.
Hi Neil Yes what I said about my bike is all true, it is an easy bike to live with and cheap to run and goes fast enough:)
That looks amazing.
Pending vale is a beautiful model railway of yesteryear Sandy. So much dedication…
It's a real Gem Cam, the amount of work and dedication is astounding
Very enjoyable Sandy thank you for sharing
Proper model making Andy, well worth a visit
Excellent Sandy, thanks for the beautiful ride out to that amazing museum and giving us a look around inside. Certainly well worth the trip I think. See you on the next one.
Great Sandy-I totally enjoyed this adventure 👍
It was amazing James:) Thanks for watching
@@WiltshireMan I have also shared on my FB History group 👍👍
Nice one Sandy. Good to see an aussie make a memorable impact on our beautiful country. Cheers
Lovely Video Sandy. What a talent and skill to build all of that and in such beauty and reality. Thumbs Up!!
It was incredible, but to see it at it;s best you have to go there and see it with the naked eye
It was great to meet you and the guys before your ride out Sandy, brilliant video again. I'm so happy my dad is back out there with you guys after his op. X
Hi Tracy, your Dad is a lovely guy, a true gent and he rides his bike properly not like some I could mention!!!!:)
Those railways were so good 👍 thanks for another fascinating video
wow, beautifully done by that gent, hopefully the younger generation will take advantage of this type of history 👍
It's well worth a visit:)
Excellent video, really enjoyed the bike trip out, model railways are a favourite of mine, and that one was a beauty, thank you so much for taking me there!
Your welcome Marlene
Lovely models. There must have been a fair few hours gone into making that lot! Thanks for taking us along for the ride.
The builder of that rail and surrounding areas sure had a great eye for detail bro. Makes my 2 small N scale layouts look toy like. Enjoyed this video. Safe travels. Ken.
I think Rod Stewart would be in his element! Thanks for the video Sandy.
Well done Sandy. Some old classic motorcycles, a drive through an old village and a place where a man wanted the old to stay ( and I agree) so he built this awesome heritage scene of England of days gone by. Smashing Sandy. I loved it. Thanks for sharing. Tony.
Thanks Tony
Great video Sandy 👍👍🏍🏍🏍🏍🏍🏍👍👍
Thanks for watching Alan
Nice little trip out. 👍
Nice to see you back out sandy on your motorcycle this time nice bit of history good video hope all is well nice day out no rain stay safe and stay healthy one life enjoy blessed be
We did get rained on when riding back and a thunderstorm too, it was marvellous :)
Yes I enjoyed the film!❤❤ I always do!
Thanks Bolle:)
Wow! Definitely looks like worth a visit hard to believe one person made it the dedication to achieve something like that impressive. Thanks for taking us along Sandy. Like the bike ride videos brings back some lovely memories. Miss my bike.
I think the first exhibit was the work of one man John Ahern but the others were joint ventures with many builders
Another one to put on my things to do list, cheers guys!
What a great place for a ride out 👍
Great video...motorcycles and model railway in one
Loved it Sandy
Dad had a Triumph 500 speed twin with a sprung hub. He bought it brand new Amethyst Red! He and my mum travelled all over the country on it, Silverstone and back from Coniston in the Lake District, including watching a full days racing at the British GP (cars)....no motorways then Sandy to avoid!!
He actually wanted a Vincent Comet but as he was borrowing some of the money from his father...he said you're not having a Vincent!!
Hope I haven't gone on to much, great video as always ATB Alistair 👍
Thats a nice story Alistair. Yes the Triumph was rather a special bike:)
I've been a supporter of Pendon for many years Sandy. I've always meant to take you there one day but never got round to it. Glad you enjoyed the visit.
Noel
Noel it's absolutely fantastic, models not only of trains, but of villages and landscapes, they even had a model of Liddington hillfort:)
You never fail to amaze.. Great bikes, buddies and entertaining video.. Much Madder and all the Madders', what place names.
‘Pen Tor Road’ a branch off Gods' Wonderful Railway line, just incredible the scale and detail for even an imaginary place.
Highlights the lost past and to what have we to show for the Future..! Cheers
Interesting visit, thanks for sharing
It was a nice ride out Oz
Thanks for the video. This was a very special one in my opinion. 👍👍
Well done Sandy for another great record of the day we went to Pendon.
I am sure it will inspire some of your viewers to go and visit the museum. As you say that your cameras don't do it justice. You have to be there to see all the incredible attention to the details of all the landscaping and buildings.
I was very impressed by the museum Colin, well worth visiting. I take my hat of to folk like that who try and preserve something of the past:)
That was lovely Sand you present your channel well 🍺🍰🚴
Really enjoyed this, must make time to go and visit the museum.😊
It seems every advance into modern living wonderful as it may be, leaves something equally as wonderful behind. Out of reach but cherished and sheltered in our memories. Thank you Sandy. Wonderful to see.
Somewhere I must visit!
Very interesting i enjoyed seeing the bikes , thankyou
Pretty good Sandy me and a couple of mates going there Thursday week all on triumphs me a railway modeller glad you enjoyed it 😊 Fred
Now there must have been a man with a lot of time on his hands 😳 long wittenham clumps sandy I believe your right it was an old hill fort. Walked up there a few times many moons ago. 👍😉
I really enjoyed that Sandy.
Cor blimey, there was a lot of hours invested in that museum, absolutely Stunning ..
All the best to you and yours 👍 🍻 🍻 🍻
I didn't see any model Tawny owls though:)
@@WiltshireMan seen, but not heard is perfectly okay 💖😂😂😂
Garden looks good to me. Nice ride out, hey happy days my best wishes to you all from the Philippines ❤️👍😉😀😁🏁🏍️🛺🐑🇵🇭🏴
I'm going to get a bit more food from it this year Gordon, the soil is improving
Another wonderful video, Sandy! Motorcycles, good weather, and good friends, it doesn't get any better than that. Thank you for taking me along. The Pendon Museum is a wonderful place to visit. Cheers!
Apparently.. Slugs don't like coffee... So try emptying used coffee granules, over effected ground, if you have a coffee machine. Helps the soil too.
Might be worth a try:)
The hill is Wittenham Clumps.... two hills, the hill with an iron age hillfort on is Castle hill the lower of the two hills. Spectacular views and site of the poem tree. Worth a visit 👍
I shall have to go back there and check it out
Thank you, I'll pop there too.
Just checked on the google and apparently it's busy than usual. Must be as a result of you and Wiltshire Man 👍
I'd never heard of Pendon so now its on the list of places to take the wife, she'll love it of course.
All those potholes could do with some more dolls.
Good to see your chipper old self again, Sandy. We are having the same problem as you with the veg, ah well, there's always next year.
Hahaa, my seeds have just started to germinate so I've put a fleece over them to keep the birds and slugs off
Thank you, Sandy. That was a beautiful video, the ride, the history, the display, all worth watching.
There is a Pendon Museum UA-cam channel, if anyone who is too far away for a visit wants to see more. Plus other videos from visitors, of course, including one made by the BBC in 1975.
What a lovely little ride out. Slow speeds and B-roads - works for me.
By the way, that hill does indeed have a Hillfort on it, Mr. Wiltshire. Check out: Wittenham Clumps (Sinodun Hills). And that little stream at Shillingford is known locally as “the River Thames” (o; - one of the historic Thames crossing points South of Oxford.
Hahaa well it might be the thames but the proper Thames flows a few miles further north at Eaton Hastings. Looking on Google maps the brook is un named and probably the result of many springs, seem to terminate in a lake Nr Baulking. I'll have to check out Whittenham clumps
Great wee ride out and trip to the museum.... Some beautiful bikes too. That jacket of yours looks like a Keela 'Belay' smock? All the best
Not sure what smock it is but it kept me dry Marty as we had a lot of rain on the way home
Like your veg garden Sandy. You should give rapini a go. Grows really quick
Grows well, acquired taste though
Never heard of Rapini Andy
@@WiltshireMan en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapini
That looks a bit like 'Last of The Summer Whine' - Hell's Grandad's Chapter. You'd have liked a natter with my old Dad. He worked his way through bike after bike, including , by , Panther Velocette, Vincent, Triumph , Norton , Ariel Square Four, BSA's , Brough Superior, Matchless, and as yet not mentioned, one close to your heart Royal Enfield ... He went through loads, often several at a time, until the demands of kids and a 'family car' usurped their place in the garage.
That mod;e railway is amazing. In a way calling it a 'model railway' understates it. In some ways it seems to be a rural topographical equivalent to the Cistine Chapel... Bloody amazing in scope and detail, and in 3 dimensions.
Hi Will, thats some collection of motorcyles the ol man got through especially the Brough Superior:) Yes the Pendon museum have done a great job, they even have a model of Liddington hill fort!
Cfmoto! Chinese I believe, ah well they also where prolific sailors, I think their boats were called Junks from way back. Sorry but that’s my Wilts/Berkshire humour which has a slight ironic dark side. Awesome upload as usual, you are a master Sandy thanks......... Rob n Ann
New Zealand
Thanks so much Sandy will be taking a visit it looks wonderful
So true what you said about England what have we done to turn parts of it into a soulless concrete mess ?
Sandy about 18months ago in a Bishopstone? video you did I suggested Pendon museum in the comments, what you missed in this video is ever single building in the Vale layout (upstairs) is from the Vale, Wanborough to Wantage, the Australian used to live in Wanborough. go to the website and tick off how many buildings you have passed or even appeared in passing of your videos. The Harrow inn Wanborough at the museum there's a picture in the guide book or postcard that shows the rear view, (the way from swindon up the high street) I used to work at the garage opposite we had the same view BUT we could see a new flat roof but we could see where the old tin roof had been attached to the wall as per the museum model. Got to be a revisit and a ride out to view the real life buildings in the Vale. Thanks Sandy
Very interesting Tim.
I did see a lot of the local landscape including South Marston and acorn bridge but didn't film too much due to the flickering lights . Roye England when he first came to England lived close to Swindon so no doubt that's why a lot of his model buildings are based on this area. I think he lived in Wanborough for a time.
I would certainly like to go back but take my DSLR camera as it would be a better tool for capturing the details:)
He took a photograph of Badbury village in the mid to late 1930's and captured a boy in shorts, I believe this boy was my father in law. The family lived in a thatched cottage close by. You can see the boy in this video of badbury, the video will start with the boy in the foreground. The boy I believe is Ronald Shaw now deceased (my wife's father)

Hi sandy, as a new subscriber to your channel I’m finding all the content very interesting. As I drive many of the areas you cover you have shown many things I did not know existed. I like you like to see our history preserved ,an things and places I didn’t even know existed. Thanks for taking us along on your adventures. I also liked old toms primus restoration. Keep the videos coming as I’m looking forward to the next adventure
Thanks Robert, I find the local history very interesting, as and when new things come to light I like to go out and make a video about it:) I'm reading a book by a local author who lived over 100 years ago and he talks about the villages and various places, lots of ideas
cool vid of you out wit frend and keep up the good vid nice train model thanks four the vids you do on the channel
Thanks for watching Lee
Pendon does have a UA-cam channel where they visit the real houses in the vale, Uffington, Bishopstone Wanborough Ashbury.
I do enjoy your view of the journey's Sandy and love Vintage bikes - course when I were a lad they were just bikes. We get a lot of bikes through here as they do country lane rides. I do like a museum and I do like agricultural history.
I also like agricultural history too Mark
Taken my boys to the Bekonscot Model Village & Railway a couple of times and it is fabulous. If you are a fan of model railways, I'm certain you've been there.
Sounds like a nice place to visit Klaus, I was amazed at just how realistic the models at Pendon look, it was to be quite frank Mind blowing. It was the result of dedication and many thousands of hours of painstaking work!
Our garden is doing really well I think it’s the no dig with home made compost and alpaca poo, if you have alpacas near you i highly recommend it
Its the pooh Lewis:) My garden is just a bit better than last year, I did find the beds were quite compacted so I have forked them over, will add more compost over time
I dismantled my model railway a couple of years ago it was 10ft x 5ft, I enjoyed building it but mode lots of mistakes and the longer it went on the early mistakes showed up even more. I sold all the items like the trains track etc, I might make a model village again one day, it’s very time consuming tho
I wonder if Rod Stewart has ever been there. I know he is an avid model railroader. He visited a display in New Jersey, here in the U.S.
its possible he may know about Pendon museum
I couldn't help but notice the baby swing in the backyard. Is that for your grandchild?
No, it's for me :)))) Yes Lewis my Grandson hopefully will enjoy it
Can you still get parts for your bike ? Would it be worth picking up another just for parts? I do that when I find a bargain on ham transceivers as most of mine are 30 yrs old.
Parts for the Himalayan 411 are very common at the moment
What happened to your BMW?
I didn't get on with it, it was a poor starter, and used to wobble at speeds above 50mph
@@WiltshireMan What a shame, I thought that was a real "find".
