The best tip I could give any hunter leveling on hardcore is to bind your pet attack and pet follow. I personally have em on my mousewheel and it makes a massive difference when killing mobs. I just mousewheel up to send pet in and mousewheel down to call it back
I use 2 macros for this id reccomend more than just binding. /Startattack w/ /petdefensive And /Stopattack w/ /Petpassive With these macros when you attack a mob with your pet it being on defensive means if another mob attacks your pet it will start attacking that mob as soon as the first dies. Hunter has a tremendous number of pitfalls for inexperienced players. Playing the class is a trial by fire. There are so many mistakes to make and learn from, and I think it contributed a lot to the class's poor reputation (and infamous nickname), especially during the early days of WoW. -Multishot breaking CC or pulling unexpected aggro (treat it as a reskinned chain lightning) -Multiple resist checks on your CC trap (one check for Feign for every aggroed mob in roughly 50 yards, plus one more check for Freezing Trap) -Frost Trap is very powerful in groups, but can pull stray patrols or yellow mobs (ie ZF scarabs) if you're not careful -Frost Trap + Entrapment causes mobs to attack nearby targets, potentially killing your healer if they're not aware of it happening -Easy to forget to turn Growl off while in groups -Having more than 999 ammo simply shows an asterisk, so it's easy to forget to restock before dungeons -Aspect of the Cheetah/Pack absolutely wrecking you and your party if you're not paying attention
Solid tips. Fun fact: multishot literally IS a reskin of chain lightning. There's a video around here somewhere demonstrating it. They behave identically. Only differences are animation and cast time.
Ignoring all other advantages and disadvantages, hunter is the best for the simple reason that it is the most engaging class in vanilla where you actually got things to do and don't just spam 1 attack / spell.
What? Mage is clearly tthe class you're describing. Ignore their ST raid rotation. Outside of that their toolkit is literally 1 expansion ahead interms of design

I would like to add something about feign death. Be extremely careful using it in a dungeon with a party. If you draw aggro off the tank, go to the tank before hitting feign death. This way the mob is closest to the tank and they can pick the mob back up easier. If you pop it while away from the tank then said mob could resist it and you die, and mob could go after another member instead of back to the tank. Which could lead to a wipe, and no one likes causing a wipe.
The best part about hunter is that every weapon in the game is a hunter weapon so you can pick up tonnes of upgrades in dungeons, people love having hunters in their groups, especially if your pet is helping the tank pull mobs
Yup I love helping the talk pull. My groups are always so impressed with how I play hunter and saying stuff like "wtf are you doing" because they can't even comprehend my skillz
Hunter in HC is best summed up as: It's one of the hardest to level from 1-10, after 10 the only time you'll really die before 60 is from fall damage or feign being resisted. Also expect a lot of competition for groups. You'd be surprised how many people die to fall damage as a hunter.
That’s one of the best things about Hunter is gaining weapon skill in something new is incredibly easy. Wing clip spam until your MP is gone switch weapons (if you have to) then kill the mob, drink, repeat until your close to your level cap on skill
Cheers for the great content mate ❤️ always great seeing what stuff you come up with. Hardcore is pumping right now so pretty keen on seeing that type of content
-1 bag slot for a tiny aspd buff, in pvp your pet is killed almost immediately what makes it unhappy, again lost bag space for food. Ammo is not sold in every town. So many disadvantages, yet its so fun.
I really think that in hardcore different pet species matter quite a bit, best example is birds, screech isnt good cus it lowers enemies attack power, its because it causes AOE threat which is absolutely HUGE because if you pull 3/4 or more mobs and dont hit them, screech will rip them all off you in a split second which can definitely save your life.
I would really recommend taking improved revive pet instead of aspect of the Hawk. The damage is not a big dps increase and having improved revive pet, can save your life in a sticky situation with the lower manacost and time spent casting it. You can freezing trap or cc a mob and revive your pet in the meanwhile.
Ty for all the info as always. I only played a Hunter on WoLK and beyond. After seeing this, I know I WON’T be rolling with it in the official HC server haha Looking forward to Warlock and Shaman!
I think from a roleplaying POV, only Orcs, Trolls and Dwarves should use a pet as they're considered extrovert races. The Nelf and Tauren should be Marksman and Survival (no pet) respectively or interchangeabley.
I had a hunter as as my first character back in 2008 - I miss him and the pets. or running out of arrows on a quest and having to go back to town and buy more :)
The Hunter does not have a bad rap, it just has trolls or memes attached to it. In fact, The Hunter is not only one of the best classics it is also the hardest class to learn to play well or even well. The problem people have the the Hunter is it is a class that takes skill and a good amount of it. people don't want to have to learn and work to be good they want to just hit 3 bottom and be a hero. The hunter is not even close to that. in fact, I have at least 8-10 bottom or abilities I use on the regular being a hunter. It is also a class that needs a strategy for different mob fights, Again you have to use your brain, but what you get is some badass battles that feel like you accomplished something great when you are standing in the end.
„The class I play is simultaneously the most difficult to play as well as the greatest, if played as well as I do.“ 😂 I had hoped for these strength when I created my very first char in 2005. I stopped playing a month later altogether after being ganked for an hour straight. I would wager Warlock beats Hunter in solo play. BT isnt the only 1.0 attack speed pet in classic, it is for hardcore, but the Bats in ZG also have a 1.0 AS and Screech for any of those that make it to 60 BIS pet imo
A tip to avoid Feign Death resists is to use it when mobs dont have you in their line of sight. Its not always possible, but if you can hide behind a corner or a tree do it everytime and you'll get way less resists
This is not true, feign death makes a spell hit resist check on all mobs in combat with you within 40 yards regardless of LoS. You can avoid resists by feigning from further than 40 yards.

I personally liked Hyena for their tendon rip, couple that with freezing trap, concussive shot and wing clip, so much cc potential but then again... much if it is wasted against npc's and any player with 2 working brain cells and capable of breathing and thinking at the same time won't be deterred by these and most classes have good gap closers on low cooldowns and as a hunter, you don't really have that much survivability or self heals or escapes so yeah...
do u remember why i dont like classic, to much minigames, i remember when i try a new pet or rare pet i need to do al this shit again, fuuck thx god is no requiered anymore on retail
One big thing to mention about Feign Death! If you let it last its full 6 minute duration, you will die. Straight up. I know that sounds like a meme but go test it on a vanilla server. This is important because (if you're like me) sometimes you might feel tempted to Feign Death somewhere dangerous if you need to tab out or go AFK since mobs will usually ignore you. Pet advice: Turtles are tanky but imo bad pets. They don't do much damage and will struggle to hold threat if you don't give them time to build it up. Owls make good leveling pets with their screech improving their tankiness and a naturally high damage modifier (+7%), but carrion birds get a +5% armor modifier instead of damage. As stated, cats are good damage dealers. Boars are decent with their charges giving them some snap threat combined with their higher defense stats, and they can eat basically anything. I'm gonna make a case for wind serpents, probably my favorite pet family. They have a +7% damage modifier and a ranged attack that deals nature damage, making their lightning breath ignore armor. It also lets them get threat on something before it gets into melee range and lets them attack things that might have dangerous pet-killing cleave, but this is finnicky and requires you to make a macro or two. The only downside is that it can't use it against nature-immune enemies, which means you'll have to use bite for those. They also eat bread, fish and cheese, which means they can eat mage food, which is super convenient. These are also food types that are super commonly dropped by enemies, especially humanoids, which you'll fight a lot of. Fish includes clams and crawler meat, and you can fish up food for your pet assuming you're keeping your fishing level up.
@@Mexican00b That was mostly a general plus since I see people completely ignore wind serpents pretty often. I felt it would be a good thing to consider even if you aren't playing HC. I've 100% asked mages I've run into while leveling for a stack of food to save on pet food costs since I usually didn't keep my fishing high enough.
Also for your pet, don't waste your time going for Brokentooth. A pet with a low attack speed has the same proc rate than Brokentooth. The DPS from the extra attack speed, isn't worth the pain to get him.
@kevinhendriksjeuh Staves are actually underrated as melee weapons. Their only realdrawback is that most have caster stats, but their base damage is usually pretty competitive, and at least spirit is actually relevant.
It might be good to go over profs in future videos. Engis great for hunter, free ammo, ability to make guns plus all the regular amazing utility of engi
Guns are largely trash as actual ranged weapons in vanilla, engi is useful for the utility items like grenades and target dummies. The crafted guns are a complete waste of time compared to stuff you get from vendors and quests.
I’d recommend alc/herb on hunters considering they have no healing utilities. Druids on the other hand have plenty of heals so they should pick up leatherworking/skinning
Personally I recommend Boars; they are easy to feed, tanky and their charge is great for getting solid aggro every pull and help makes up for their below average damage.
I wanted to comment on boars as well, I used to GM a twink 29 guild back in the day, charge is invaluable pvp ability for flag carriers or if youre on the run.
@@krisschaumburg6432 One time I got the Onyxia buff before doing a BG, and my boar got it as well. Boar was one-shotting cloth and leather wearers with charge in WSG lol
As a longtime hunter main and HC enjoyer, a few additional points: - ranged weapon merchants often sell green bows/guns. These will likely be a significant upgrade so keep an eye out. - don’t sleep on disengage. If you pull aggro off pet and intimidation is on cd, disengage is great to reduce your threat while leaving feign death available for emergencies and usually drops threat just enough to get the mob off you. - also don’t sleep on the various types of mob tracking, these are great ways to find named mobs and general mobs through walls, in structures, caves, hilly/low visibility areas, etc - integrate rapid fire/bestial wrath/berserking (if troll) into macros that also use serpent sting/arcane shot. This maximizes uptime, you’ll never need to think about popping them manually again. Can also include auto shot, don’t need a separate button
Boar up till lvl 32 then cat this is when cats get dash. Boar is a tanky pet and comes with charge so very helpful early levels in keeping you alive. Owl is off the table till much later on when they get screech and dive.
i though hardcore was not using green items and not using potions or any other thing in the game that would other wise help you make it to max level easier and not take skills or certain skills i dont know maybe i was mistaken.
There is also a lion rare spawn in Mulgore called The Rake that has an atk speed between broken tooth and normal cats, he's not that rare and not camped. Definitely a top option for Horde.
@CharterForGaming Yeah, but wolves are pretty mid, unfortunately. At least compared to cats who have better damage output or boars who are tankier and have charge. Arguably, even birds are better because of screech.
... not a top option if your goal is to survive ... on lev 60 raids dungons its an other point. The best pets are Bats, Owls, Birds, Gorillas ... than boars and bears ... and so on, cats are way behind
I think its important to mention for anyonr wanting to do end game content: as a hunter, you will have a ridiculous amount of competition. You think hunter is easy? So does everyone else. There will be a million hunters
I'd strongly recommend keeping pet on defensive in general in case of phone aggro/ bathroom breaks which could result in you getting killed by npcs while you're afk.
Did a "no range attack" hc hunter run once. Got a wind serpent to range pull mobs with lightening breath into traps. The gameplay loop actually didnt feel too bad and it was still miles better than hc war
Hunter pet doesn't have "Taunt" in Classic. It only had Growl, which is a ability that does high threat, but doesn't actually put in top of the threat table like the warrior Taunt.
Okay gatekeeper you'll have to forgive the very minor error there considering the tool tip literally says it taunts the target. Vanilla mouth breathers I STG
@@420OngBak I mean a taunt and a high aggro move are very different and isn't a minor error 😂😂😭 You don't have to get defensive as I doubt WilliE minds when someone corrects something he says as its only natural when you're providing so much information
@@420OngBak Pretty cringe lashing out at a guy for providing correct and accurate information in the comment section. WillE doesn't need white knights to defend him bois.
@@TheScabbyRat I don't really care what Willie thinks and it's not about defending him. It's about the small microcosm of the Pserver/Vanilla only community that so desperately need to validate themselves by how much they know about the game and others don't. I do not give Vanilla andys the benefit of the doubt for one second. You guys are fucking pathetic. Also, again.. I know that a high aggro move and a taunt are different but in the tool tip it literally calls it a taunt.
So funny how people can play the same class and have completely opposite opinions on strategy and which abilities to prioritize. You say serpent sting arcane shot are best skill I think they are low damage waste of mana. Should always prioritize auto>aimed>ms for overall dmg, burst, and mana efficiency. You also never mentioned leading with auto attack and avoiding clipping shots, etc. You never mentioned Scatter Shot at all which is one of the most powerful hunter utility abilities which isn't affected by deadzone. If you level as marks vs bm mobs die so fast to a proper hunter rotation that your pet is hardly helping. It's not scary having aggro as a hunter when you have the longest range and fastest speed in the game. Rather see a 20 minute video where you mention core skills that new players can practice (kiting, shooting while moving, not clipping autos, trapping in combat, aggro juggling with pet, etc) to get better and help hunters excel vs pander to poor performance and maintain the huntard reputation.
Wrong the differences between the pets are not minor ... they are huge and the wrong pet increases the risk of dying, cats for example are terrible for hardcore. And you dont go BM first you should go SV first than BM ... as a hunter you usually die when 2-3 mobs hit you, the BM talents are of little use there, you have to increase your chances of not dying in close combat.
it really hurts me to hear so many people advice hunter as a "new player class", yes hunter has a very smooth early leveling but that comes down to the fact that the early levels are more forgiving in bad pet management. Its very common for new players who start hunter to hit a wall at about lvl 35-45 where not controlling pet well leads to pulling extra mobs and lack of pet ability knowledge means they are often not well optimized for the content they are doing. Its a bit of a bait class for new players, just because it has good early leveling don't make it a good introduction class, learn the game from a paladin or mage first its way less learning.
Hunter survivability is a 9/5, yet u give it a 4? Hunter is the only class ive gotten to 60 deathless (without intentionally doing hardcore. They are just that good.)
Funny little nuance of the hunter. the better you are at playing the hunter while leveling (kiting and not getting hit), The more damage you take simultaneously.
The missconception about the hunter is that it's only a ranged fighter. Hunter is also a melee. If it comes too close it still dies. Always watch your defense and occationally go to lowlevel areas to increase it. Watch what aspect you have cause it can get you killed if you have aspect of the cheeta. Also feed the pet as often as you can.
Couple more tips: Disengage is a real ability and works, most people never use it but you actually permanently reduce threat with it and this can save your life, keep in mind that using it twice will reduce threat twice so spamming it works. Improved revive pet is the way to go, it makes in combat pet resurrection an option and that can save your life. Immolation trap is far better then is given credit to here, very good vs elites or for dual killing with melee weaving.
This sounds great in practice. But I tried this and it ended up being a challenge in just having pets die and never getting loyalty up and having to constantly feed them just so they don't run away. It wasn't fun and I just ended up not playing the hunter anymore. Its way too easy for your pet to die if you don't have an insane amount of game knowledge.

@@Mexican00b That was mostly a general plus since I see people completely ignore wind serpents pretty often. I felt it would be a good thing to consider even if you aren't playing HC.
I've 100% asked mages I've run into while leveling for a stack of food to save on pet food costs since I usually didn't keep my fishing high enough.
i died like a week ago because of FD ending, 47 hardcore, i was so disappointed in myself
Also for your pet, don't waste your time going for Brokentooth. A pet with a low attack speed has the same proc rate than Brokentooth. The DPS from the extra attack speed, isn't worth the pain to get him.
I think Warrior would be an awesome next choice. Can be very difficult so itd be a nice change of pace
+1 for warrior. Having it follow the hunter video would really highlight the contrast.
Protip for a warrior: use spirit items and a staff if theres no better weapons nearby
@@WalterBurnCare to elaborate?
The series I did not know I needed, but I am all for it.
Personally I recommend Boars; they are easy to feed, tanky and their charge is great for getting solid aggro every pull and help makes up for their below average damage.
and they can have gore and bite. boars are by far the best leveling pets imo
As a longtime hunter main and HC enjoyer, a few additional points:
- ranged weapon merchants often sell green bows/guns. These will likely be a significant upgrade so keep an eye out.
- don’t sleep on disengage. If you pull aggro off pet and intimidation is on cd, disengage is great to reduce your threat while leaving feign death available for emergencies and usually drops threat just enough to get the mob off you.
- also don’t sleep on the various types of mob tracking, these are great ways to find named mobs and general mobs through walls, in structures, caves, hilly/low visibility areas, etc
- integrate rapid fire/bestial wrath/berserking (if troll) into macros that also use serpent sting/arcane shot. This maximizes uptime, you’ll never need to think about popping them manually again. Can also include auto shot, don’t need a separate button
My current lvl 51 hunter is using a green high lvl bow bought from a vendor. Was better than her mithril blunderbuss.
What would you say is the best pet for leveling and raiding? Cat vs owl?
Would love your insight as a newer HC player
Boar up till lvl 32 then cat this is when cats get dash. Boar is a tanky pet and comes with charge so very helpful early levels in keeping you alive. Owl is off the table till much later on when they get screech and dive.
i though hardcore was not using green items and not using potions or any other thing in the game that would other wise help you make it to max level easier and not take skills or certain skills i dont know maybe i was mistaken.
@@userunknown1030 I think your thinking of the ironman challenge which is different.
I laugh every time i see hunters feign death and get resisted, get clapped noob.
Thats something I miss about vanilla quivers; they gave an attack speed boost. And larger quivers gave a larger boost.
really think its underrated how Hunters have access to mail armor as a ranged character, that is a lot of DR built into the baseline of the character.
AND mail looks rad.
There is also a lion rare spawn in Mulgore called The Rake that has an atk speed between broken tooth and normal cats, he's not that rare and not camped. Definitely a top option for Horde.
The black worgs in sfk.
Petopia is your friend
@CharterForGaming Yeah, but wolves are pretty mid, unfortunately. At least compared to cats who have better damage output or boars who are tankier and have charge. Arguably, even birds are better because of screech.
Mazzranache or bust
... not a top option if your goal is to survive ... on lev 60 raids dungons its an other point. The best pets are Bats, Owls, Birds, Gorillas ... than boars and bears ... and so on, cats are way behind
Hunters have so much control over their aggro and so many ways to kite enemies. This has to be the least hardcore class.
Thanks the pet training points i missed totally, thank you
No class is fun in classic, so… there’s that. 😂
Awesome Video - thank you!
Could you do a warrior one?
Loved your structure and just straight up intel!
Great tips - doing a hunter now. Great idea for a series and I'm looking forward to the druid vid!
DO NOT pass up improved revive pet. A 4 second pet revive can save your ass if you are smart.
Did a "no range attack" hc hunter run once. Got a wind serpent to range pull mobs with lightening breath into traps. The gameplay loop actually didnt feel too bad and it was still miles better than hc war
Did you make it to 60? Sounds like a cool challenge
Man, I loved those "was it any good tho?" vids and now I get these : ))
Oh classic hunter. Almost 19 years ago I made my first. Still play him sometimes today
mans said, hardest class in the game LOL foh.
Copium, easiest class and it’s not close
Hunter pet doesn't have "Taunt" in Classic. It only had Growl, which is a ability that does high threat, but doesn't actually put in top of the threat table like the warrior Taunt.
Okay gatekeeper you'll have to forgive the very minor error there considering the tool tip literally says it taunts the target. Vanilla mouth breathers I STG
@@420OngBak I mean a taunt and a high aggro move are very different and isn't a minor error 😂😂😭
You don't have to get defensive as I doubt WilliE minds when someone corrects something he says as its only natural when you're providing so much information
@@420OngBak Pretty cringe lashing out at a guy for providing correct and accurate information in the comment section. WillE doesn't need white knights to defend him bois.
🤓☝️
@@TheScabbyRat I don't really care what Willie thinks and it's not about defending him. It's about the small microcosm of the Pserver/Vanilla only community that so desperately need to validate themselves by how much they know about the game and others don't. I do not give Vanilla andys the benefit of the doubt for one second. You guys are fucking pathetic. Also, again.. I know that a high aggro move and a taunt are different but in the tool tip it literally calls it a taunt.
Paladin next
Do warrior next. Opposite end of the leveling spectrum.
Priest next please! :)
When do y’all think blizzard will launch a classic hardcore realm?
Good video! Do the warlock next, it's the next-most safe hc class and a lot of people roll lock just to do hc. I love this as a new series!
Lock has no escapes unless they roll demo for double vw sacrifice and engi for professions for target dummy. Hunter has a multitude by comparison.
@@Travybear1989 If you have a hard time on lock in hc then you're just bad tbh
Hardcore WoW? What crazy bastard invented this? Is this a private server or a new feature? Is Hardcore WoW available on PVP servers?
I disagree the Hunter early game is garbage pets can’t keep Agro and your constantly having to feed them and find food and blah blah blah so annoying
Just one comment. Plainstriders can't be tamed as hunters pet even if you want one. Even if the video especially mention it.
I haven't had an urge to play wow in a bit but this made me want to play a hunter now...
WOW ALL THE HUNTERS ON HERE ARE SMOKING PURE COPIUM... HUNTER IS THE EASIEST CLASS TO LEVEL AS A HARDCORE OR NONE HARDCORE....
Couple more tips:
Disengage is a real ability and works, most people never use it but you actually permanently reduce threat with it and this can save your life, keep in mind that using it twice will reduce threat twice so spamming it works.
Improved revive pet is the way to go, it makes in combat pet resurrection an option and that can save your life.
Immolation trap is far better then is given credit to here, very good vs elites or for dual killing with melee weaving.
as for the pets. you only need ghost cat. ghost cat BIS. ghost cat?? more like goat cat.
HC hunter pets should also be death=delete. Tame a new one, no ressurection in HC
There is an achievement for that I think.
@@StarlitSoryn well being punished and having your balls stepped on IS the whole point of hardcore mode. You think people play it for fun? No way junior!
