A someone who plays priest since the first day the WoW servers went up: you all got it wrong. Shadow is not and was never meant to be the "dps spec", it was meant to be the PvP spec. Discipline was meant to be the DPS spec, but never quite managed to do that. As a result the most efficient and effective way to level a priest in classic is a holy/disc combination, focusing on smite, and getting just the spirit increase from the Shadow tree for 5 points. Smite out-dps every shadow spec, and with Spiritual Guidance you get the perfect tool to stack tons of spirit for fast regeneration, yet also turn that into solid amount of damage. And on top of that you got all the talents for good healing selected as well, to do the occasional dungeon or just keep yourself alive. Forget about Shadow in Classic, and you got one of the best hardcore leveling class you can imagine.
I always go 5/5 spirit tap first…it just feels so so much faster than drinking after every pull Another thing that helped me a lot is when you first start playing priest it feels like you should do much more damage before you start wanding than you really need to: smite/swp/then wand or mind blast/swp/wand depending on if mind blast or smite is stronger (they flip flop at different levels)
Small note on holy leveling , spirit tab and spiritual guidance combo , so every time you kill something you get your spirit doubled . and guidance does give apellpower a boost from it . Sadly this kicks in late (around level 52 ) since you hard need spirit tab and wand specialization and everything else in disc till meditation is to good to pass. But its decent solo leveler (still less then shadow since 50+ shadow is kinda nuts ) tough by that time a more solid healer in dungeons is nice. Also Smite on its own is very decent it does not stack well with spell power but its baseline is good , so with scrappy gear it still does fine . I feel a secret to low priest deaths is that it does not attract the adrenaline junkies . Combined with there not being any aoe (sorry holy nova) to speak of , you are never tempted to do stupid stuff since there just is no reward for a fat pull.
16:22 I strongly discourage attempting The Escape for the wand. It's a multi-step escort quest with a lengthy respawn timer. You must speak to the NPC, accept the quest "Ignition" and then complete it, then return to him to turn the quest in, then accept the escort quest. In other words, you have to speak to the NPC three times -- and he despawns for several minutes after the escort is completed. This is the sort of quest that is best completed at 3 AM.
I found that when it comes to talents going shadow from the start isnt the best. I went wand talents, then the first 10 points into shadow and back into disc. Improved fortitude and shield are solid, mana cost reduction on instant spells is great, Inner focus is awesome especially cause of the 100% mana cost reduction. I played an undead and was always using inner focus either for devouring plague which costs a ton or simply to refresh fortitude for free. Then improv inner focus makes u even more tanky and durable and spirit and mana reg while casting are simply good. This is even more efficient than the usual shadow tree. Until lvl 40 i stopped to drink maybe 5 times and always cause of personal fuck ups and over pulling. Maybe go and respec for shadow when you reach 40 to go straight into shadowform if you really want to go shadow, but disc spec is great
I was actually contemplating the same thing. Just started playing Priest for the first time and from what I gathered, shadow gets really good once you hit 40 and get shadow form. I will probably spend most of my points into Discipline until level 40, then respec into Shadow to get shadowform. I am also quite surprised that Healing Focus isnt mentioned. In tough situations, that could be a pretty big deal IMO.
at some points while leveling, my armor amount wasn't far from a mail user (yay inner fire). I always leveled as Disc until Shadow about level 40-45, after that I got into shadow... and yes always took the Wand talent, and I mean always.
Having that Fear Ward from a dwarf priest in that big dog fight in MC was always nice for us tanks. It was nice not having to worry about stance dancing.
On the talent side of things you do not want to go deep into shadow until you hit 40. The mana regeneration talents in discipline are way better and mindflay is simply less dps than wanding until you get rank3 at level 36. Improved SW:P and Shadow Focus are very important of cause. Blackout is decent when you fight elites 1v1 which isn't really an issue without it anyways (You can literally run mobs around trees forever without getting hit), however it completely ruins your chances against elites with adds or singeling out specific mobs that come in packs (Think Forsaken Courier, Deathclasp, Boss Tho'grun etc) The usual strategy revolves dotting and running the boss npc until it dies, however if your blackout procs on the mob you are applying SW:P to it starts getting left behind by their adds and you will end up having to tank them to continue damaging your dot target. Otherwise pretty decent guide.
Hit warlord in classic as a priest. Also leveled disc for dungeon spams/solo questing. Smite was on par with mindblast honestly. Shield smite swp and wand baby!
Smite is underrated. Relatively cheap and decent improvements in the holy tree. Coupled with wanding, this makes holy priest efficient levelers throughout the game.
@@fulley56 oh yeah, that shit even worked going into TBC, I remember running into a retri pally disc priest team one night at around 2k rating in arena, if they ever caught you off guard and the fully geared priest unloaded with power infusion + trinket + judgement + sanctity aura it was absolutely disgusting.
Mindblast, swp and wand.. stack a lot of spirit + 5/5 spirit tap and you rarely drink. You can throw a mindflay in the mix too. Ran a priest alt in vanilla and it was much more chill than my rogue main.
Yeah. I haven't tried one yet in hardcore, but in vanilla classic, priest in unreasonably good at leveling. The "only a few stacks of food and water" part isn't even an exaggeration.
It's kind of weird how late the first wands come from quests. Dwarf priests have to do the Gathering Idols quest which is level 18 and difficult (darn troggs) for the Dwarven Firestick.
If you pick up enchanting you can get a wand a bit earlier than that but the lesser magic essence can be a bit RNG dependent. But yeah it’s kinda funny/weird how long it takes to get a wand when it’s such a central pillar of their kit.
This is basically how I leveled in classic. Went Disc to start (+spirit tap), then switched to Shadow at 40. I may try it again on the official HC servers when they come out.
Here's a great tip you can do, You can cast rank one shadow word pain or perhaps if you are undead or troll. You can use touch of weakness or hex of weakness. Rank one both, and this will apply shadow weaving onto your target and barely uses any of your mana in the process
For some reason, when I heard the announcement and read through the rules, all I could think of is making a shadow priest forsaken for nostalgia's sake. Seems ideal to go herb/alch for extra utility on hardcore.
blackout does NOT proc of every tick it procs of the first use of shadow word pain only and u should really spec into vampiric embrace while leveling^^ it brings the healing from 20% to 30%. (not from 20 to 22)
I still think Priest is the easiest class to get to 60 with. That or Mage are arguable to me. But Priest forces you to go slow kinda, and I think that translates great to HC.
Priest is not the easiest, any class with a pet or combat reset is way easier (feign death/vanish/bubble hearth). We don't even have a movement sprint or blink or frost nova or anything like that, and we have no escape. What we have is a kit that promotes methodical play, slow, steady, planned out. Potions and such take care of the rest. Our role as healer is very dangerous as well, because when a pull goes wrong and the dps run like cowards after they mispull, the threat from our healing brings all the mobs to us after the tank dies. Also try healing when you know that if you fail and don't heal properly people will lose their characters which they have worked on for many many hours. Keeping those bars full becomes a lot more important, and when shit goes wrong on a pull or eith an add pull, and it does, you have to stand your ground and accept the heal threat from emergency healing, whereby if your tank dies they are coming for you next. And all the while the dps could already be running halfway out of the dungeon by then. It's the same thing with warlocks, people think they're easy - but they have no threat reset or escape or movement ability. Same goes for warriors. When you really think about it, an intelligent player with escape tools afforded by classes like rogue, hunter, Palace, mage - have many more options to save themselves. The death stats are irrelevant because those classes also attract idiots who think it's an easy ride.
ObiWand Kinobi, the wand simulator. Love my priest in classic and they are very tanky. You will see that most deaths are early on, before wand, and also would love to see death breakdown and if the person decided to go enchant for a wand.
In my opinion: The range on shadow spells isnt really worth it. Better take silence. On the holy side of things: spec into Spiritual Guidance. Gives your 25% of spirit is spell power. This works with the double spirit from Spirit Tab. Basically gives you around 100 spell damage at level 40.
Nice. 1 hour ago. I was just thinking about rolling priest and searched for this. I have a 45 mage and have had only had to use iceblock or cold snap 3 times (I do dangerous things. deadmire and frostmaw while they're red level, did the elite battle for hillsbrad quest while it was still green, overlord mok morrok at 43, etc) and it's feeling a little too easy tbh.
I’m glad they have that addon to show the death log of classes as everyone tries to say warlock is one of the easiest classes for hc and refuse to hear otherwise, but you can’t argue with the death log and that warlock is the class least likely to make it to 60… Sometimes something that looks or seems easy isn’t as easy as you’d first think.
Definitely rolling priest in hard-core...I'm considering it the "dad class" easy, smooth, and chill. Maybe when I was younger on my first go around in vanilla I'd roll a cheeky warrior but today I'll play it safe haha. See yall in hard-core!!
So far the HC servers are pretty fun. I did roll priest as I've mained one for years. I'm debating trying mage though for a funner challenge. Even though priest healing in dungeons might be the ultimate challenge yet. I'm honestly scared to even try it. 😂 and I know my class very well.
Troll Priest is crazy good for leveling. Everything is useful except bow/thrown specialization. Shadowguard not only procs blackout but also procs shadowweaving. So if you're doing a lot of wanding and your wand is a shadow-wand (which the best wands ARE), shadowguard increases your damage significantly. Like....~25% faster kill times.
6:15 ok why not use Renew on tank? it's mana efficient and an instant cast. You can cast it right after the first Heal to minimize down time. I can't believe there is an anti-Renew opinion coming from very good Priests I know. It's even better than Rejuv (one of the best Druid spells as it ticks 5 times instead of 4. And due to the longer duration, it get even bigger % of benefit from your +healing from gear.
@@Sweetguy1821 well not literally but it would so feel like it. especially when you add in that they run and pull others. i feel like 2 of that healer would be unstoppable though.
Just started an nelf priest on hc. As far as I have noticed, the mana regen does start again while using Starshards. I just learned there is or was a bug with Meditation that breaks the mana regen. Don't know is this is fixed already.
I'd definitely day that I'm a wand enjoyed. I never loaded classic Era back in the day since I started in wod but I'd always hear people mention that wands were a thing back in the day. And after having gotten one in wrath, I feel like my game play style has changed and improved for the better now that I'm bot running out of mana.
I play spriest in a warlock spriest feral druid trio. I find that blackout is much better than spirit tap for group utility when I’m getting 1/3rd, likely less than 1/3rd of the kills. I acknowledge that solo leveling it is king but in group play I would wholeheartedly recommend blackout 5/5, come back to spirit tap late if u want
Haven't played classic in a year now or watched any wow content. Willie videos started popping up and got to say, great content as always. Thinking about giving wow another go.
I remember trying to kill shadowpriests back in the day in classic, it's like they were invincible despite being a clothie. They are deceptively survivable.
QUESTION: I have leveled a couple of priests in classic and I've always skipped Blackout as I figured it's a pvp talent, mainly because I thought it DOES NOT proc off of every 'tick' whether that's Mind Flay, SW:P or Devouring Plague. Has this been confirmed with all certainty? I am almost sure it procs off of 'casts'. Meaning it can proc only when you apply SW:P or DP, Mind Flay CAST (not tick), when Min Blast, Touch of weakness or Shadowguard deal direct damage. If anyone tested this, can they confirm? I cannot test it myself at this time. P.S. Great stuff WillE. As always.
I can honestly say every priest death I've had in Hardcore was entirely my fault. Forgetting to use my defensive cooldowns, forgetting to buy/craft potions, etc. Basically, prep well, use your abilities, manage your resources properly, and you're golden.
I have mained a priest for years and i can certainly attest, you do wand a lot. tho i have always been holy so i can just renew and wand rather than shield. more mana efficiant imo.
great vid drthlog is the most funny add on ever you get to watch people die and laugh!!! i just wish it had streammer at the top like cnn where it showed the other faction deaths over 20.
I ran a dps smite build in AQ40. If you can get the hit and a paladin is putting up crusader it SLAPS. Same when leveling. Smite is very good dps but mana heavy.
hey there, are you ever gonna do a duo guide for hardcore as well? or do you think you're not as well versed to make such a guide? would be nice for people like me. thank you in advance!
i took every class to 20 and priest was most fun and the most whispers i got for help. I ended up going dwarf and i fetl strong being able to use stone form.
My stomach just can't stand the "PW:S, SW:P, Mind Blast, Wanding till dead" kind of rotation. And I don't care how efficient it is compared to actively casting spells.
Everyone knows you can heal dungeons as shadows just as you can heal with feral spec or tank with arms/fury spec. But when teaming for dungeon in HC would you like you healer to be full shadow? Because I'm pretty sure I wouldn't. That means lack of: - Healing Focus, - less heal crits, - slower cast of mana-efficient heals like Heal/Greater heal, - no Inspiration buff, - no improved shield, - no mana regen while casting, - no reduced mana for the Heal/Greater heal, - no Holy nova. And that's not even the deep discipline/holy talents.
Died on a level 20 priest with a warrior mate, Sad, overall good class for hardcore but better to play with someone or you'll die of boredom before reaching 60.
Priest is just a diffrent mind set that keeps you alive people tend to know right out the gate they arent gonna beable to tske 5 mobs at once so they never try it and in the end its what keeps them alive along with their abilities
The reason why Warlocks have a lower % of reaching 60 and one of the lowest level average deaths is because a shit ton of locks have died at level 1-2 trying to do their imp quest because they didn't want to wait 10 mins. Its not because warlock is harder to level. This is like saying Nelf is the hardest race to level because people die during the Wetlands run coz they did it to early. No, its just people being inpatient, nothing to do with class/race. Not trying to be an ass btw, i really enjoyed the video as usual. Just wanted to point that out because i've heard other people make the same argument.

I will defenitly try that
Do you have a build you can share? I usually go shadow for pvp but would like to try this. Ty
I always go 5/5 spirit tap first…it just feels so so much faster than drinking after every pull
Another thing that helped me a lot is when you first start playing priest it feels like you should do much more damage before you start wanding than you really need to: smite/swp/then wand or mind blast/swp/wand depending on if mind blast or smite is stronger (they flip flop at different levels)
FYI- I think the blackout stun on SWP is on cast, not tick. At least for the last 10 levels that seems to be evident for me
It’s on application not ticks. Spamming r1 SWP you can test this. Did this a lot in low lvl pvp
Doesn't proc on Mind Flay ticks either, just the application.
As someone who hasn’t played wow in a decade, and is looking into playing a hardcore account - thank you for these videos
The big thing I miss from old WoW was the long CD & Big effect abilities. I love the oh-shit button or uber spell
Otherwise pretty decent guide.
parla the legend, make a video on this please
Hit warlord in classic as a priest. Also leveled disc for dungeon spams/solo questing. Smite was on par with mindblast honestly. Shield smite swp and wand baby!
Mind Blast is 25% more dps that being said.
The shield and wanding are fantastic for surviving disconnects mid fight. Not as good as a hunter pet, but good.
Smite is underrated. Relatively cheap and decent improvements in the holy tree. Coupled with wanding, this makes holy priest efficient levelers throughout the game.
Not only that but in a Duo, a Pally can use Seal of Crusader on a target and Smite absolutely smacks.
Couldn't have come at a better time, I've primarily played druids/hunters and have just started a priest. I hope to finally get past 40.
Yeah. I haven't tried one yet in hardcore, but in vanilla classic, priest in unreasonably good at leveling. The "only a few stacks of food and water" part isn't even an exaggeration.
Legit, the only time you have to drink regularly is if you're healing a dungeon. Or you're fighting mobs with mana burn
Should mention to carry various wand types in case mobs are immune
Here's a great tip you can do, You can cast rank one shadow word pain or perhaps if you are undead or troll. You can use touch of weakness or hex of weakness. Rank one both, and this will apply shadow weaving onto your target and barely uses any of your mana in the process
Been waiting for my priest to get some spotlight. The priest player is built different
Priest is literally the class you think u can take in pvp but then he just slowly fucks u up I'm a priest main
I have 3 priests LOL my guild would roast me for having so many. It’s just fun 🤷♀️
For some reason, when I heard the announcement and read through the rules, all I could think of is making a shadow priest forsaken for nostalgia's sake. Seems ideal to go herb/alch for extra utility on hardcore.
blackout does NOT proc of every tick it procs of the first use of shadow word pain only
and u should really spec into vampiric embrace while leveling^^ it brings the healing from 20% to 30%. (not from 20 to 22)
its a real shame deathlog was not integrated in the HC addon itself from the beginning. so much missed data
Want a really fun hardcore experience as a Priest? Roll Disc/Holy. No NPC in game has holy resist, and yes, there are holy wands.
Holy is surprisingly good hard leveling spec timewise. People praise the mixed start which is very good, but Holy has some juicers around your 30s.
Nice. 1 hour ago. I was just thinking about rolling priest and searched for this. I have a 45 mage and have had only had to use iceblock or cold snap 3 times (I do dangerous things. deadmire and frostmaw while they're red level, did the elite battle for hillsbrad quest while it was still green, overlord mok morrok at 43, etc) and it's feeling a little too easy tbh.
surpriced you didn't mention going tailoring enchanting to get the greater wand early.
Can't really do enchanting in hardcore if trading isn't allowed (rods)
@@Marvion You can level ench to 70, get a greater magic wand and drop ench for other prof.
Getting greater wand by lvl 10 is so clutch for all clothies
And due to the longer duration, it get even bigger % of benefit from your +healing from gear.
also one reason they do well is if the mobs can heal you can mana burn it. i know in upper stv those healers i used mana burn on them all the time.
Without mana burn I swear those healers would be unstoppable lol
@@Sweetguy1821 well not literally but it would so feel like it. especially when you add in that they run and pull others. i feel like 2 of that healer would be unstoppable though.
Been loving your hardcore content. I hope you make more!
Is the add on accounting for how many people roll priest vs all other classes? Just wondering
No, dumb addon
Just started an nelf priest on hc.
As far as I have noticed, the mana regen does start again while using Starshards.
I just learned there is or was a bug with Meditation that breaks the mana regen. Don't know is this is fixed already.
Love the info, macros & add ons too!
Blackout doesn't proc from tick dmg of shadow word pain or mind flay.. it's a 10% chance of procing when you cast the spell
Listening while playing a priest in hardcore. Nice :D
I remember trying to kill shadowpriests back in the day in classic, it's like they were invincible despite being a clothie. They are deceptively survivable.
QUESTION:
I have leveled a couple of priests in classic and I've always skipped Blackout as I figured it's a pvp talent, mainly because I thought it DOES NOT proc off of every 'tick' whether that's Mind Flay, SW:P or Devouring Plague.
As always.
It only procs of cast not of every tick so it is not that great
Im level 24 priest, 1st time classic player, would recommend.
SWP blackout procs are only on the first proc. Now, you could spam rank 1 to fish for a proc... But you won't get one from it after the initial.
Warlocks can play like priest and wand down enemies and never life tap if they wanted to, but most get bored off their ass and get greedy...
I like to combine SWP and wand into one macro:
/cast Shadow Word: Pain
/cast Shoot
Helpful.
Great idea for lvling. Careful w raids though. Buff cap 😖
what UI addons are you using. i loke how your health and mana is under your charactor
I went straight shadow priest. I wreck 1v1 mobs but never let me mana go below 25% incase I need and escape and never below 50% in caves
I would love to watch a similar guide for hardcore duo and trio good options
I can honestly say every priest death I've had in Hardcore was entirely my fault. Forgetting to use my defensive cooldowns, forgetting to buy/craft potions, etc. Basically, prep well, use your abilities, manage your resources properly, and you're golden.
I have mained a priest for years and i can certainly attest, you do wand a lot. tho i have always been holy so i can just renew and wand rather than shield. more mana efficiant imo.
I've been waiting for this one for a whiiiile! 🖤
great vid drthlog is the most funny add on ever you get to watch people die and laugh!!! i just wish it had streammer at the top like cnn where it showed the other faction deaths over 20.
DOT and Mindflay don't stun every time they do damage. Only when first cast
I ran a dps smite build in AQ40. If you can get the hit and a paladin is putting up crusader it SLAPS. Same when leveling. Smite is very good dps but mana heavy.
put shield on tank before he goes in? so that he cant get rage? xD
hey there, are you ever gonna do a duo guide for hardcore as well? or do you think you're not as well versed to make such a guide? would be nice for people like me. thank you in advance!
i took every class to 20 and priest was most fun and the most whispers i got for help. I ended up going dwarf and i fetl strong being able to use stone form.
why doesnt the cast sequence macro not work?
might have missed it, but as a priest, you have similar or more armor than mail wearers too.
and then gain that armor based mitigation to your shield, which acts like a small health bar.
You just have to be reactive in dungeon and raids as a healer or you will hear big words in several language 😁
being reactive isnt enough you must be proactive to be a healer
Yea it doesnt matter how reactive you are if you're new and don't know how things work, raid knowledge and experience over everything
Which addon shows you how much PwS you have remaining?
*Hears about deathlog, pauses video, downloads deathlog, resumes video* THANK YOU
I love my Holy Priest. She is a tad slow aoe killing but she grinds hard and gets it done!
Anyone have any idea when classic hardcore releases? can't seem to find any news since they announced it
Could you share the shield display addon or weakaura?
The only thing that gets me while playing is the armor buff getting consumed while in trouble. Its actually over 2/3 of my total armor atm.
LFG, this is the one we've all been waiting for... At least the one I've been waiting for! 😅
That means lack of:
- Healing Focus,
- less heal crits,
- slower cast of mana-efficient heals like Heal/Greater heal,
- no Inspiration buff,
- no improved shield,
- no mana regen while casting,
- no reduced mana for the Heal/Greater heal,
- no Holy nova.
And that's not even the deep discipline/holy talents.
Died on a level 20 priest with a warrior mate, Sad, overall good class for hardcore but better to play with someone or you'll die of boredom before reaching 60.
8:38 "Priest shield, mind blast ..."?
Maybe Xaryu will make it (he had the Mage make 60, but all his other attempts have ended in death pre-level 41 AFAIK), poor little guy
Priest is just a diffrent mind set that keeps you alive people tend to know right out the gate they arent gonna beable to tske 5 mobs at once so they never try it and in the end its what keeps them alive along with their abilities
Devouring plague is great; but man berserking is big for fights.
Shadow guard also procks blackout and shadow weaving
@@davidst.marcus9167 ya, i think troll is a bit ahead of undead unless you are pvping or playing shadow at end-game.
Do paladin next please, love these vids!!!
Where do you play wow hc?
i searched for your priest guide 2hrs ago was sad that it didnt drop and hr later and 8lv up for priest you drop a vid lol
casually nearly letting the tank die to Verdan at 6:18 kekw
GREAT VID
I'm new and level 10. When do you get a wand?
can either make one yourself if you get enchanting, buying one from the AH, and/or getting one as a drop.
