- In the course of the plan steam event "Steam meets gravel" in 2013, 44 1486-8 hauled a 1000 t gravel train over the slope from Oberrohn to Förtha.
An acoustic delight.

Lovely comment. I was born in 1955 and have many vivid steam railway memories, though steam ended sooner here than in Germany. I thought of steam locomotives as my friends and I missed them very much. ‘My’ friends because it was a state owned industry and every British citizen was a locomotive owner.
It's really cool to see old steam engines running. Takes you back in time when life was normal.
Gracias a NUESTRO PADRE CELESTIAL Que alcanzamos a vivir aquello hermoso, que ya NO volverá! 🚂🎶😁
"Normal"?
"Normal" being those wonderfull days when you had time to appreciate things like this (and did not have to carry a mobile phone at all times in case you missed the latest %$%&** from someone with nothing better to do)
Normal times when 10 year old kids were working in the coal mine such a nice times.

I promise you, if this had been in the UK, there would have been an announcement, "The train arriving at platform 2 is not in normal passenger service. Please do not attempt to board this train." I'm not even joking.
Can't be too careful.!..... 🙄 😂
Yep, intelligence Quotient of Brexit voters is very low, app the amount of an slice of toast. And 40 years of RTL television has done the rest.
@@steffenrosmus9177 Not gonna disagree, but this has nothing to do with Brexit -- I heard this exact announcement in the early 1990s before a coal train pulled up for a crew change.

I believe this is a station retired for public service. The city oberrohn had only about 240 residents and no train stations operated by Deutsch Bahn this station is maintained by enthusiasts and only plys these historic trains. I have been on one in Hattingen in the western part of Germany
Immer wieder beeindruckend die Leistung dieser Maschinen. Deutsche Wertarbeit Pur.
Visited Thuringia in 1996, and the sight and sound of double headed 44's coming out of the morning mist
on Grefenroda bank was a sight and sound never to be forgotten !
Hallo Max!

Nothing beats the syncopated sound of a 3 cylinder steam locomotive.

Beautiful videography! Excellent sound and excellent framing! Thank you for this video. Greetings from the high plains of Texas.
Visited Germany and Austria from the US in 1970. All sorts of steam, 01, 23, 50, 52, rack engines hauling iron ore on the Erzbergbahn, etc. But the 44's were my favorite!
Wonderful machine making beautiful sounds. Great vid, many thanks from the UK.
Awesomely beautiful sound; a pure symphony. Danke.
When it is moving slowly, it sounds like a metronome adjusted for waltz playing. Great video!
Powers twice per rotation so sounds like sextuplets, no?
I Used to watch these in action in the dieing days of steam on DB and have two class 44 Marklin HO loco models and they have great pulling power
Loved it, the sound was awesome. Peter from Australia
Like a NSW D57 or D58. A sound from the past.

The sound is gorgeous to hear.
Super Video. Klasse Sound der 44.👌
I've always thought the 10 wheel (Decapod) arrangement was better on European RR because it allowed smaller dia wheels and more rail contact/traction. In the USA we tried for more speed because of distances and used larger dia wheels. Thanks for the video very well done.
My understanding was that in the UK the Great Eastern Decapod was supposedly introduced to produce a rate of acceleration to match electric underground trains - but never achieved much in practice...I say supposedly, as the real object was to deter the running of a rival railway into London by demonstrating it was unnecessary...it was quite short lived
We had Locomotives with small wheels for the freight trains and with large wheels for passenger trains .
The U.S. moved on from the decapod to the Santa Fe (2-10-2) configuration pretty quickly due to larger grate area. In Europe, firing rates weren’t as high as they were on American locomotives, so the 2-10-0 (1’E on the continent) was largely sufficient.
Thanks, makes sense to me.

Is ja'n dolles Ding!
Great soundtrack!
G'day from Downunder, that's breathtakingly awesome.👍👍👍🇦🇺🤠
So schön !!!!
Hi from America!! Congratulations!! I like the video clips of the Plandamp steam 🚂 locomotives with the 3 cylinders loco, and the meter guage Mollybahn, and HartzBahn in the snow covered mountains. Have you also seen the 🇺🇸 AMERICAN Giant, UNION PACIFIC 4017 BIG BOY 4-8-8-4 Articulated Mallet-with single expansion 4 cylinders. Also, I have been watching steam locomotives from all around the world, like the British FLYING SCOTSMAN 4472 and 60103. And Russia P-36 2-4-2, (in America it is a 4-8-4). And Tokyo Japan with C-class 4-6-4 that was the basis of the Japanese Anime' movie of "GALAXY EXPRESS 999" in the 1970s. ➕ Plus, there are many videos of miniature, scale models, of live steam locomotives, that run on 7&1/4" guage track. In addition to 5" guage, and other different dimensions. And India with the FAIRY QUEEN. And Australia and the Beyer Garret 6029 4-8-4+4-8-4. And South America that has an articulated Mallet that still burns Wood in 2021!!!!! Truly AMAZING!!!!! Thank you! May GOD Bless all of us with peace and wisdom!!!+++ AMEN!
Einfach nur 👍😊
Wonderful video, thumbs up :)
Awesome sound from 6.20 on!
Well it's very very weird to find two steam locomotive passing by
Fabulous! How many steam locos does Germany have? To see 2 great locos like this pass each other is amazing.
300 Bands mit Namen wie Electric Weed Goblin, Orange Desert Haze oder Wizard of the Leaf haben den Dreizylinderfrachtbehemoth bei der Berganfahrt gehört und gesagt: SO UND AUF DIESEM BEAT SCHREIBEN WIR JETZT ALLE UNSERE SONGS
I didn't know that the Class 44 locomotives were three cylindered. It makes for a lovely stack sound. When going up the grade, I don't understand why the cylinder cocks were open. I'm sure that at full valve opening that there isn't much condensation occurring in the cylinders. Please correct me if I am wrong.
See their response to Marc Bollard 2 days after your question.
I didn't know there were steam locomotives in Europe with three cylinders. In the USA there were several railroad companies with three cylinders locomotives, all making that unique sound, but none run today, that makes that locomotive probably last and the only 3 cyl one running today.

@@taurus2016 Danke!
The two side cylinders sounding to the beat of the middle cylinder.
So I guess those are three cylinders in the classic high-efficiency triple-expansion setup? I used to ride three-cylinder motorbikes mainly because I loved the sound. Waltzing at its best, thanks for uploading.
I don't think a triple compound would give you a 3/4 scherzo ! Normal 120, 3 cyl beat.
They are simple, all 3 cylinders the same size.
Three Cylinder Simple Expansion superheated.
Only Marine Triple Expansion have enough space to allow for size of 3rd Cylinder.
@@astridvallati4762 There was an American attempt at a triple-expansion locomotive in the early 30s, on the Delaware & Hudson. Didn’t last very long.
Hooked up tight and fired clean. Schon.
900t+170t=1070t
Sorry, Gesamtzuggewicht!

Sounds like a Shay gear locomotive... Same idea as the big shays used in the USA are three cylinder engines just they turn over at full speed and you almost can't hear each exhaust. Very cool machine if you're into the old logging days

1:12 hear the sounds of a leaky slide valve ?
I bet having 3 cylinders had less wheel slip because of smoother power to the wheels.
Pretty sure a loco of that vintage would have piston valves all round. 3-cylinders is considered to give a more even torque and hence less tendency to wheelslip, but of course any powerful steam loco can slip.
