Can you get your minds over the fact this worked with 16 MB, a 133MHz pentium class single threaded processor and rendered everything entirely in software with just 256 colors? , more over, it had to start with less than 640 KB to it.And had spare time to handle the sound, the physics and the network play.
I remember this was PC-CD's answer to console racing games and even Daytona USA. Even magazines called it "The daddy of PC racing games". PC racing titles has been struggling to compete back then
There were lots of good 3D racing games for the PC in the 90s besides this one. For example: Stunts, Indianapolis 500, Destruction Derby, Grand Prix 2, Nascar, Hi-Octane, NFS1 and Carmageddon later on. But I agree, PC games were often more simulation focused, instead of arcade.
you guys think the developers liked Ridge Racer? this game's a lot like it. right down to the graphical quality. seriously, this looks like a beast for '95.
my favorite PC racing game ! totally blowing my mind in 1995 !! Ridge racer was not so good, even today love this game and play on my MacBook with DOSBox ! Milestrone company was neat.
@@milesr4609 Need for Speed was better. not sure how this could stand competition, but it was released 3 months earlier, so maybe people didnt have NFS yet. But during 1996, everyone understood, NFS is the way. :)
I just finished this game, it was annoying that track 5 crashes the game all the time. But my driving skills are far below yours. I mean, I did try to race them all manually shifting, but I go from guide-rail to guide-rail and slip all the time. Never got it to work for me to shift back before a corner.
Thanks! I'd probably play this much worse if I tried it now :) I don't remember game crashes, maybe those happened to me as well, but it might be due to DOSBox settings or different copy (patch?) of the game. I always use manual shifting with driving games after getting some feel of the mechanics. Especially in rally games and playing with keyboard imo it's much easier to estimate resulting speed when you shift down to prepar for corners. Try to get the car oriented toward the road before shifting up and accelerating to avoid sliding.
I suck at this game. It doesn't behave like other racing games. Either that, or it doesn't run properly in DOSBox. In most games when you go too fast into a curve and you try to turn, the car starts to turn while skidding sideways into the wall and then you end up scraping along it. In this game, it seems that if you're going over a certain speed, the car won't even try to turn, it just plows head-on into the wall. To be clear, I'm not saying that I expect to be able to drive around curves at full speed, but I expect the car to at least try to turn in the direction I'm pushing. To me, it seems like the steering goes dead over a certain speed and even though you're pushing left, the car just goes straight. This only seems to happen on curves though. I can steer fine on relatively straight sections of track, but fail to slow down for a curve and it seems like the car just stops responding until you've hit the wall and lost all your speed. I've never seen any other racing game that does this.
Yep, with enough speed controls are very unresponsive, I very much doubt it's a DOSBox issue. That's just how the driving mechanic are programmed in this game. You need to anticipate curves and learn tracks well to know where to hit the breaks to do tight turns. Can't think of other games either where driving mechanics are like this.
To be honest, I never really put much time into Screamer. I never had a DOS system, so I only played it for the first time a few years ago. I kind of like it, I just never really got into it.
It was graphically pretty impressive for the time, but there are other more fun first person racing games imo to play for DOS. For example: Stunts, Hi-Octane and The Need For Speed. But there are worse games also...
I still like the look of Screamer's graphics. They're not exactly state of the art, but bright, slightly pixelated graphics bring back fond memories of playing such games back in the 80s and 90s. I can kind of look at them and remember what it felt like when they WERE state of the art. As for the Need for Speed series, I've only really played the first two. I like the second one, but didn't really care for the first. Some of the tracks were pretty, but I just didn't like the game itself much. All the vehicles seemed more like hovering boxes than cars and I hated the invisible barriers along each side of the road. Even when the ground is perfectly flat and it looks like you should be able to drive on it, you can't. Plus I could never beat the computer. It's on the consoles, not computers, but I really enjoy the Burnout series. I've been playing the games on the PS2 emulator (and a couple on the PSP emulator). Starting with the third game, they introduced the idea of running the other racers off the road and it's really satisfying to be able to make the computer cars crash after all the times in games that the computer has made me crash. Right now, I'm stuck on the last pursuit challenge in Burnout 2. No matter what I do the target car seems too fast for me to catch the requisite number of times before it reaches the finish line. I see a lot of other people online who had trouble beating this one too. Burnout Paradise is available for Windows, but people say it has some annoying bugs and doesn't have a lot of the extra DLC that's available for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions. Unfortunately, said DLC is only available online and gets locked to whatever console it's downloaded to. What happens if that console dies and the DLC is no longer available to download? I refuse to "buy" something that I won't be able to keep permanently. Just one of the reasons why I hate the state of gaming today.
We played the first TNFS in lan back in the days, was pretty fun competing in those long alpine tracks. It also has much better ost compared to screamer imo. After DOS times I mostly enjoyed the CMR series. Pretty much stopped playing racing games after CMR4 though. I tried some Burnout games for PS2, but not really my type of games.
Did you try manually changing your sound card addresses in the setup? Very possible the card is too new to be supported if that doesn't work. Game runs in DOSBox with modern hardware.
YT used to have much lower video quality and 15min limit for videos when this was originally uploaded. I replaced several of my videos years ago when quality had been improved and video length restriction was lifted. This video was previously split into several separate videos. 60FPS tag indicates this is a re-up.
The new Screamer trailer brought me here.
I didn't know that screamer was a 90's thing.
What a time to be alive.
i never heard about the franchise before that trailer

Incredible coding achievement.
Welcome back, screamer
I remember this game, was a Ridge Racer for PC.
Ohh the 90s the best era for gamers.
Screamer was so far ahead of it's time lol.
yes completely
No completely not
@@kapiernegativ Yes it was. For DOS, this is really damn impressive.

it's just an arcade racer but still looks a bit nicer than console counterparts.
I'd totally forgotten about this game until I saw it in a compilation of DOS games, but I hadn't forgotten that I loved the soundtrack. So good

Now THAT is a good soundtrack.
I remember putting the game disc my CD player just to play the music!
@@jmckendry84 I did the same!
this and Screamer Rally, Moto Racer, F1 GP and Quake, then xmas 1997 I bought a 3Dfx and everything changed, great memories
Wow how Nice is Watch this game so much time after! I’ve played a lot when was a kid!! Nice post!
The menu music is incredible
I used to love screamer. Can't believe it's been almost 30 years! 😊
This was my first true arcade racer and then I found consoles with Ridge Racer and Beetle Adventure Racing and so on. I loved this game.
The ignition is not bad too
This was my favorite game until I discovered NFS SE
Thank you very much for not filling this video with ads. Great recording and no annoying interruptions!
This was my first game when I was 3 years old in 1998.
Even the Speedometer looks like in Ridge Racer!!!
Used to play this on a mate’s P75. Happy days!
Love the re-naming of cars..
Hammer = Bugatti EB110
Tiger = Ferrari F40
Rising Sun = Mitsubishi 3000GT
Yankee=Corvette C4 ZR1
Tiger= Ferrari F40
Then the Porsche 911 Carrera.
Go this for xmas back in 95. Still remember it to this day. Fantastic racing game.

I wish there was a remake of this exact game but with the latest graphics

No SVGA for you either then :)

the gameplay animator comments brings me a lot of memories
I just discovered this game, it looks great.
This was the time pc actually matched up with 32-bit consoles for racing games.
This was superior to console racers of the same era..
Still feels fresh
If only it was this smoooooth, great game non the less
