    The translucent look is amazing, great job.
    As far as the color separation with the deep cast is concerned try testing a small amount and leave it in a cold area over night to start gelling up. Then once they're thick as honey pour them together and move them to your warm space to cure under pressure. I'm sure the cold overnight will give you the separation you're looking for.

    Can't get over how stunning the bowl/glass turned out! Always amazed by the Bob Ross "Happy Accidents" that happens to skilled artisans. What I wanted to comment on was the stem/base. At first I thought it would look better with a darker wood - mahogany or dark cherry. But after looking at the finished piece, it struck me how much it resembles the texture of cork! So the color and texture will carry though the project. Nice thinking, Jim!! (Good luck with the tractor. Don't let it run over you!!)

    • @SpragueWoodturning
      @SpragueWoodturning  Рік тому

      Now that you mention it, it actually does look like cork! Thanks for watching!

    • @valeriefuqua4641
      @valeriefuqua4641 Рік тому

      Happy accidents are what happens when you look at problems as opportunities for creative solutions instead of blockades. There's always a way around something, and an artistic piece always turns out so much better if the problems you encounter along the way are used to make it even better!
      I've started working with a medium that's pretty much all about that! Most of what you're doing is gluing decorative pieces on to hide the imperfections on the egg. My decorative eggs have gotten really stunning and even when I go over what something was added to cover over, people just keep looking at the piece and going, "Man, I can't imagine this thing without that! It's too pretty!"

    I suspect that your rice method didn't work because the shape of the grains would leave tiny air pockets that would not be there when the resin was poured so giving the volume discrepansy.

    Hi Jim, very nice project to start the year with a Big Cheers Drink ... I retained the rice measurement technique making sur that I would prepare more to compensate possible mistakes, although using transparent art cast turned out very nice. About the Art Cast epoxy I was glad to see you use it for the outside of the bowl. I hesitated doeing so since it had a depth of more thanan inch vertically but less than one horizontaly. My reasoning was that if your pour less than one inch on a 12 x 12 surface it should work, why not around a bowl. Gabriel seemed to believe that we should not do it when I wrote him in this regard. If my meromy is good the resin surplusses that were given out two weeks ago were artcast and they were rather thick. The absence of thermocracking possibly validates this idea. Thus I will try it soon. Last I bought a vacuum by PB AUTO last year and it works perfectly. I would have bought a larger model like yours if it was to be done again.
    Thank you and see you next week.

    Great job on Jim? You are definitely an inspiration to me. I am always trying to figure out what to turn next. You are so creative. I have a few neighbors who would love a big wine glass😆 Thank you and keep those videos coming!!

    Very nice coloring in the bowl Jim! Great project. My mind defaults to “thinness” when I think of wine glasses. Wondering if you’ve tried or had issues with thin walls on resin turnings? Thanks for all the work you put into these amazing videos!

      The thinner it gets, the riskier it gets, lol. This will sit on our bar and I’m sure people will be grabbing it and playing with it so I wanted to make it a little more robust, lol. Thanks for watching

    That's a beautiful piece. Your hand accents the stem and would make a perfect wine punch bowl with a ladle. As a personal glass or a decorative piece, I would put close to a $1800 min. price on it as the transparency of it is close to clear. Just an absolutely gorgeous piece and the color transitions between the wood and resin goes perfectly. Keep up the great work. NNTR

    Beautiful work as always. I was watching you turn that first base thinking, "he's running out of wood there." Then it came off. Lol. Hopefully you can make something out of the first base. It is a beautiful piece of wood.

    Nice glass. Just the right size for me.
    So my experiment with stabling one piece of black walnut and not on another came out as expected. The stabilized bowl tock less resin and the wood was much harder. I think stabilizing has its benefits. Yes it adds more steps but it is worth it in the long run. I think the cost is about the same. Cost of resin is about the same.
    FYI I have been experimenting with different tools for turning resin. Carbide have an advantage over traditional gouge for sure. But I have a flute less gouge from Thompson Tools that is very effective. I first learned about this tool from the Robo Hippie. He is a member of our club in Oregon.
    Thanks agin for your interesting channel.

      The only really issue with stabilizing resin, is the fact it’s not food safe, other than that there’s a ton of benefits to stabilizing but when I use Deep Cast it essentially acts like a stabilizing resin in punky wood and that also makes it fine for food contact. Thanks for watching!

    Nice! Loved this fun piece. Jim! We gotta figure out how to get that cool design from the bottom to top of the bowl. Maybe resin glasses, paperweights, ashtrays (just for looks) 😄.

    Lots of fun to watch you get over the issues with the piece. To be honest I thought "world junior trophy" when you started. But it turned out looking a lot more like a wine glass ;). Why the Tuk tape on the vacuum chuck? Another great video. Cheers.

    Great project, Jim. Love the color swirls in the bowl and how you used a "bowl in a bowl" to conserve resin. I'm curius, what is the volume of wine that this thing will hold? Looks more like a punch bowl than a wine glass. That's a lot of wine!

    Hi Jim I love the colours you chose and the bowl really come out really well it is unique. It's really cold freezing infact and pouring down with rain and the wind is blowing really strong here in Scotland. I like the magnificent piece of wood you used for the stem it's lovely it's got nice grain in it, The shape is awesome.

  • @scottbishop7899

    The colours in that were awesome, a shame they were better in the middle lol
    Think you should put clear in first and last to hopefully have the colour more on the side and that way you won't lose it on the bottom because that was damn good on this one, still good with the clearish top part though and a good colour anyway.
    At least you were chuckling about it lol
    Have you ever though about using Mica stone in resin or inlays?
    I watch a few gold prospecting/sniping/panning channels on UA-cam and it seams very soft yet sparkles really well too but not sure if that would be like your pearl pigment? Just found out in comes in a few colors too.
    Just a thought lol

    • @SpragueWoodturning
      @SpragueWoodturning  Рік тому +1

      Even if you put in clear first the pigments are heavier in weight and will probably work there way down to the middle of the castings. I would be interested in trying some of those mica stones in an inlay. Tell them to save them for me, lol. Thanks for watching!

    p.s. There are portioning and size scientific theory for stemware, and other than general I feel it still comes down to personal preference

    If you didnt poke at it with a stick in the beginning then it should have stayed looking like the bottom. The bubbles would have also been a cool touch. If you made a disc with left over resin and put a teflon or ceramic coating on it and poured over top, would it stick to a second pour directly on top of it. I am looking for a way to make to 2 resin pours not be able to bond to eachother for a form I'm working on so I'm just curious. Also looking at wood round blanks. Cost vs effectiveness vs reusability.

      I would think food wrap would be a better choice. Getting other chemicals involved in the resin casting is probably not a good idea. Shrink wrap or even the white kitchen bags that I use pulled tight might be a possibility too. Thanks

    Absolutely stunning, my preference would be for a thinner base transitioning smoothly into a fat thinner step, again smoothly transitioning into the bowl ... but that's me .... which ever way it was done it is still an absolutely beautiful piece ... thanks for sharing 👍
