Woodturning - Emerald Green Loves Maple Burl
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- Woodturning - In this video, I combine emerald green tinted Deep Cast from Designer Epoxy with maple burl chunks to make an awesome semi enclosed bowl. The flow of the resin and the busy patterns in the burl really make this a really awesome bowl. Thanks for watching and please share with your friends.

Green is definitely not my favorite color but that bowl turned out beautifully. The green in the designer epoxy almost looked like jade.
I totally agree! Thanks
OH. WOW!!! That is stunning!!!! Lucky lady having a husband that buys her pieces like this. Love that emerald green 💚
Thank you so much!
Wow, you never cease to amaze me. The burl inside has a little replica of the Pillsbury dough boy sorta. The colors are spectacular. Another wonderful piece. The gentleman's wife is a very lucky lady. Had to watch twice because I was interrupted. 1430 hours.
Thanks again!
Love the emerald green and the floaties add character to the piece. Another excellent piece.
Thank you very much!
Very nice job on the layout of the burl and the epoxy color is a great match for the piece!
DESIGNER EPOXY
Thank you very much!
That emerald green designer epoxy is amazing! It's the nicest shade of green that I've seen in a long time. It goes great with the tone of the wood.
I totally agree! Thanks
That's just lovely! Congratulations on a new home and workshop! We finally got our new shop ordered. We just went with a steel building. Wood prices are through the roof here in GA too.
Yup, it’s pretty painful! Thanks
Well done Designer Epoxy
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice work
Designer epoxy
Thank you! Cheers!
Gorgeous Turning. Not a huge fan of green, but that looks fantastic!
Thank you very much!

I actually gasped when you took it off the lathe after the first coat. That is GLORIOUS. The shape is perfect. It is perfect. If my husband commissioned something like that for me, I don't know what I would do. Beautiful. Beautiful. Beautiful.
Thank you very much!

Thanks
Absolutely stunningly Beautiful Jim. The owner of this bowl must be over the moon in love with it.
I hope so! Thank you very much!
Hi Jim!
For the first time since the beginning of the war in Ukraine (2022-02-24) I watched to the end the story about your wonderful work.
We evacuated with the whole family and live in Poland.
Your creations are unsurpassed!
Thank you! Eduard Ihnatov.
I’m so sorry that this is happening to your country! As a former soldier with 24 years in the Canadian army I’ve followed what is happening in the Ukrainian with much interest. I watch a channel called the Enforcer that covers the war most nights. It does my heart proud to know that Canada is only second to Poland in the foreign legion. This is the fight for Democracy and it’s important that Ukraine wins this war! May those who have done this to your country pay dearly for it! Thanks for watching and Slava Ukraini!
So well said Jim. Know that America too is disgusted by what is happening in your beautiful country Eduard, and hopes for the very best for her people. I wish you and your family much peace and happiness, and I hope you can return to your country in safety soon. I echo Jim, Slava Ukraini! Heroyam Slava!!!
It horrifies me that people so filled with malice can even exist... The fight for democracy continues around the world, and your President leads with the strength of will to inspire peace around the world.
*Slava Ukraini!*
*Heroyam Slava!*
@@Kuro_Tsuki Yes, exactly that!!!
You are going to have another happy customer. Its a great piece!
I hope so! Thanks
These videos never disappoint, every time the wood reveals so much beauty. Thanks Jim for sharing your talents.
My pleasure! Thanks
Another beautiful bowl. The burl is very interesting and the green resin compliments it very well.
Thank you very much!
From the inside, that darker burl looks like a brain. Brain Burl! We just invented a new species!! Amazing piece Jim! Can’t imagine how excited you just be to start your new shop!
Thank you! Cheers! Yes, I am. Thanks!
I saw that too and thought how neat that looked
Your customer is beaming with happiness for such beautiful bowl. You never disappoint with your finished works of art.🤗💚
😊 thank you
The green went SO well with the finished wood. And the shape complemented the natural wood's grain beautifully.
Thank you very much!
Gorgeous work with Designer Epoxy. You are inspiring me to take a new approach to some word turning I'm preparing to do.
Wonderful! Thank you very much!
Designer Epoxy. Wow…what a beauty. Love the Maple Burl grain and the resin color choice. 😊
Thank you very much!
That's awesome, Jim! Your client, and his wife, should be very happy with it!
I think so too! Thanks
Wow that one just jumps up and says I’m gorgeous!
Love that Designer Epoxy
Thank you! Cheers!
A set of small bowls made from different-looking cores, but all the same size and shape?
Good idea. Thanks
Another beautiful piece. Somebody is going to be very pleased! Designer Epoxy.
I think this is about as good as it gets. Stunning.
I think you could make shallow bowls or plates with the cores. They’d all be different colors around the same burl/resin theme, and they’d make a cool set.
Been throwing that idea around in my head too. Thanks
I like that idea. That would be a really cool set!!
W❤️W! Gorgeous bowl! Tge burl is spectacular!
Thank you very much!
Could those cores be broken up/cut up? To be embedded into other clear blowls? Might look cool. Another idea is pen blanks, like for fountain pens/calligraphy pens.
They sure could be, thanks!
Love it. I’m not normally overly excited about the electric green, but this piece came out really nice. Another great job Jim.
Designer Epoxy
Thanks a bunch!
I really don't like green unless you add Hypershift. I'll see how it goes.
I'm not getting notified when your live streaming is coming up. That causes me to be days late to check in. 😮
You’re not the only one! I post my videos every Friday at 9:00 am EST. Thanks!
Build your own vacuum chamber! Schedule 100 pipe 12" in diameter 1" tap plastic fit to size and a harbor freight vacuum pump. I made 2 for under 100$ US. Works fantastic . Holds vacuum for days!
Thank you very much!
Jim…your more than creative art just keeps inspiring. Beautiful stuff you make, and they keep getting better. And all of your recommendations are home runs. From the best epoxy I’ve ever had the pleasure to use, the hunter Hercules which is quickly becoming a shop favorite, to the simple and very smart Stop Loss Bags! Thank you!
Curious…Why don’t you use wet sanding on your resin projects?
Thank you again for sharing your expertise.
Happy turning.
I just simply don’t see the need for it, lol. Thanks for watching, I really appreciate it!
Jim, you have done it again!! What a gorgeous piece!!! The Emerald goes perfectly with the wood. I love the different look in each wood piece, it's just beautiful!!! Can't wait for the next video. Hopefully one day I'll win one of these art pieces. Yes, art pieces bc it couldn't be considered as anything but art, maybe functional art. 😉👌 Love this one more than some others. I have several favorites and this one is going in my top 5 favorites! Excellent job Jim, ty!!!
Great! Thanks!
Lotus pods and jade. Very Zen. I'd love to lie bezide that rive and take a nap. Then at twilight, light the bowl with LED candles. Wouldn't a silver rim in Asian style be gorgeous! Oh! Those leftovers would make great little lampshades for artistic purposes, on small lamps or chandelier entryway lighting. You're so smart!😉
That would be cool!
Designer Epoxy. Absolutely stunning bowl!! You're such a perfectionist that you nit pick. As my hubby says to me on every project...stop over analyzing...it's beautiful. But that is a hard thing to do when you're a perfectionist...I am the same way! I noticed you wear gloves occasionally. Is that to avoid splinters? Aren't you scared to use them? I realize that sometimes it is necessary to avoid skin damage but they are so dangerous in general. Thanks Jim for another awesome bowl!!
It’s to protect my hands from the resin shards coming off the lathe. Keep your hand on the right side of the tool rest and there will never be a problem. Thanks
Designer epoxy. AWESOME bowl and the colors are just GREAT Jim. The Tolly tailstock extension is sweet to use when you can. I'm sure that you will find an amazing project for those cores that you are hanging onto.
Thanks again John!
Absolutely beautiful bowl Jim. The emerald green compliments the burl perfectly. Great job 👍👍👍👍👍.
Thank you! Cheers!
Wow, designer expoxy is beautiful. This is an amazing bowl. Just beautiful!. I'm looking forward to next week! Greg
Thank you! Cheers!
Great color choice!! I really like the chunkyness of the piece!!
At your recommendation, I’ve begun using Water Lox. It is just as amazing as you say it is!!! Thanks again for sharing your techniques and creativity!!!
Awesome! Thank you!
Absolutely gorgeous! The shape really makes the whole design spectacular! That emerald green from Designer Epoxy just pops! And I wouldn't worry about the little floaties... they just add character! 😊
Thank you so much!
I absolutely LOVE the shape of this one! The tall, gently rounded sides are just fabulous! I'm sure the new owner will be thrilled, stunning colour/burl/profile, top stuff!
The only thought that came to me to suggest re your cores you've been collecting: I think it would be cool do do something like last week's double walnut crotch, with a core top and bottom, maybe with some pine cones or banksia pods or something in resin in the middle like you did with the maple branches. Or solid wood even in the middle, or wood with a complementary inlay. That's all I've got!
Thank you Jim, another beautiful piece as always! 💜
Great suggestions, thanks
Designer Epoxy. Pretty cool. No, Not good enough. Amazing,. Inspiring. Refreshes the soul of the creative. Many thanks,
Thank you! Cheers!
Jim, another beautiful bowl! You have shown and spoken about the various safety precautions you take- safety glasses, hand coverings, long sleeves, and respirator. Do you wear hearing protection?
Yes, when I’m sanding. Thanks
Well, I make what I whimsically call "Carlin Valets" They are a small shallow bowl between 4"-6" wide and maybe get little over an inch deep.
I call them Carlin Valets because the late Great Comedian, George Carlin had a great routine about having "Place for your stuff." so it is a nice place for ones keys, pocket change, small every day carry crap one has. And perhaps something as such would be a good use for those cores you have. with that Go Designer Epoxy.... and Good luck on the house.
Thank you very much!
I just started wood turning not that long ago myself. I have done much, a few pens, a snowman and one bowl. I haven't graduated up to working with epoxy resin yet but when I do you've definitely sold me on Designer Epoxy. I've only caught a few of your videos so far but from the ones I've seen they're exquisite. Your work is exceptional. Thank you for sharing the videos. Designer Epoxy!
That is awesome! Thanks for watching!
That is magnificent!! Absolutely stunning piece of work. I love how it all came together, the resin the wood and the finish. The water- lux is my very favorite finish, I love the shine! It does a wonderful job of making the piece look classy! Bravo!
Thank you very much!
I agree with you Jim, it’s bowl turned out absolutely spectacular!!!! I love the dark burl with resin is beautiful! The mother-of-pearl really stands out with the contrast of the dark wood. Truly beautiful piece, Jim!
Glad you enjoyed it
Even if someone, like myself, doesn't agree with Jim's color choices, he still makes such amazing pieces!
I always think the colors Jim uses are way too saturated (I still admire the work, I just prefer muted colors), but I'm extremely suprised I actually really want this piece!
-1 satisfaction because I'd still prefer a less saturated color, like a sage or a tea green but that's still a 9/10! The amount of skill it takes to make someone like something they don't prefer is so impressive and I'm just in awe.
Thank you very much! I really appreciate it.
Fantastic. The variation in the burl is amazing. Love the color. It goes great with your lathe ;). Great fun watching your technique. Thanks again for posting lathe speeds and details about the process.. Designer epoxy
Thank you very much!
Jim, Another outstanding epoxy piece. That finish is phenomenal. I haven't used designer epoxy yet, but I sure would like to try sometime. Thanks for your thorough explanations.
Thank you very much!
Look forward to videos about your new shop when that project gets under way. Very curious to know what changes/improvements you'll make from your existing shop.
Gorgeous piece! Can't go wrong with emerald green.
Still a work in progress, haha. Thanks
Once again incredible and enjoyable video. I learn something new every video without question my favorite UA-cam channel! Designer Epoxy.
Wow, thank you!
Just got my power back and this was worth the wait. I love this bowel. It just gave me an ideal of something I would like to have made. The profile is perfect. We'll talk😁. Spectacular job once again.👍
Thank you very much!
Another lovely piece! The resin color is a little more yellow than is my preference, but that's my own weirdness! That burl is just stunning and you did justice to it ❤
As for the cutouts...seeing as how light transfers really well through the resin, I'd think that a little dome reading light or desk lamp for a nightstand would be a perfect use for those. Some LED ring lights in the concave would be difused in a particularly fetching manner.
Incorporating lighting can be tricky. Thanks
Yes sir. Spectacular!!! I have quite a bit of odd shaped burl that i have been trying to figure out how to best utilize and you just showed me how. Great work. Thank you for sharing. A.
Glad to help! Thanks
Designer Epoxy... Gorgeous bowl. One of these days I'll take my husband up on his offer to pull out his lathe and let me give it a try. You are very inspiring...Thank you
Thank you very much!
I was expecting a gladiatorial match trying to get the casting out of the bucket and, poof, out it came! I admit to being a wee bit disappointed, but only a little. You know the war is on when the bucket goes to the floor for you to wail on! And you introduced a new technique for Advanced Woodturners - the "Git 'er done" mode! When you just got to hog some wood - git 'er done! Beautiful work, Jim!
Lol, thanks!
Another beautiful bowl Jim !! Love the Designer Epoxy with emerald green and the burl is very special !! Great job!!
Thank you very much!
Nice bowl. Didn't realize that Waterlox was resin based....also when I buff in between applications I can't get the surface really smooth??? I do clean with denatured alcohol also...
It’s not resin bases, it’s tung oil based. In order to get it to flatten out, you need heat that’s generated by the Tripoli buff. Try pushing a little harder and load lots of the compound on the buff and it should work. Thanks
Love your work, I'm starting my own business because of you. Not wood turning , wood bottom paper weights. Good stuff. Designer epoxy.
That is awesome! Good luck!
Jim you have done some amazing things. But I think this is one of the best. The emerald green is awesome in this. Profile is beautiful. Love watching your channel.
Designer Epoxy
Wow, thanks!
Awesome blow Jim !! I have quite a bit of Oak Burl and it is rotted and irregular and while I was deciding that I couldn't make use of it I did not realize the potential it has till I found your channel. I am anxious to try the resin/wood combo... thanks.
Glad to help, thanks!
Another beautiful piece with a great profile. I love to contrast between the light and dark burl against the emerald green. With all your pieces you light up, have you ever considered doing a resin lamp shade??? Excellent video Jim, keep'em rollin'
Yes. It is on my list. Thanks very much.
Another great piece, Jim. Thanks for the great videos, as always. The designer epoxy emerald green looks amazing. Good luck with your move later this year/ next year. I hope everything works out well for you.
Thanks 👍
Combination of these two sure made a beautiful bowl.... Great job Jim.... Designer Epoxy
Thank you! Cheers!
Wow, that emerald green is wonderful! Approximately how many buckets of epoxy does that little green packet color? You used 3 buckets in this bowl.
It all depends on how deep you want the color. I can usually get three projects out of a bag. Thanks
Love this Jim, semi enclosed is by far my favorite. If you have several cores laying around (if I heard right), you could cast them together resin with their points facing the center. As a bowl or even a hollowform (if you have alot). I'm picturing an outer profile with semi random circular forms cut from the cores surrounded by the casting resin.
Great idea!
Nice Jim: the colours are spectacular. Looks good with the light in it also. What is the weight of it, if you weighed it? The cores could be used for soap dishes in the bathroom or guest bathroom or candy bowls. Another great project Jim. PS: exciting times ahead for you. You designed the current house, so the new one will be a breeze.
Sorry, didn’t weigh it. Sweaty time ahead, lol.
Hello Jim this maple burl is lovely and got lots of charcter and colour, The resin is lovely and goes nicely with the burl. The bowl is amazing I really like it. Well turned Jim from Amanda xx
Many thanks!
I don't know where you get your pigments from but there's a company called TLP pigments stands for this little piggy and they have some of the most beautiful pigments variety beautiful Sparkle to them I think you should give them a try
I only use Designer Epoxy pigments. Thanks
Another great bowl Jim. You know from my past comments that I really like your purple/blue colors, but the emerald green on this project with the different colors of the burl was absolutely the perfect choice. I really like the "lip" on this project as well. Take care and have a great weekend!
Thanks again!
I love watching you. Thankyou😊 idea: women use small bowls as jewelry holders. I sell small bowls I sculpt from clay at markets in my homemade jewelry stand. Your cores are the same thing.
Totally, thanks!
Beautiful! I love the shape and the colors. I'm not familiar with Designer Epoxy, but it looks great in your bowl.
It’s awesome! Give it a try. Thanks
I'm thinking about giving woodturning a try as a hobby. Do you have any recommendations for smaller benchtop lathes for me to try like, for turning pens or cups or small bowls on to see if this hobby is for me?
Rikon makes good bench top lathes. Have a look on buy and sell platforms, possibility start with a cheaper lathe to see if it appeals to you before making a large purchase. Safe turning. Thanks
Great video Jim, it might actually be my new favourite piece yet. I hope whoever ends up with this piece treasures it, I know I would.
Designer Epoxy
Thank you very much!
Designer Epoxy. Thank you for introducing me to this beautiful resin. I just got my first delivery of the deep pour and I am so excited to use it with the pigments they sent. I have become a fan of your wonderful works of art. This bowl is beautiful!
Wonderful! Thank you very much!
Another WOW bowl. Love the emerald green - it really works well here. Hope you get your new home sorted speedily and it's not too prohibitive cost wise. Love your work. Looking forward to another video on Friday. Sarah x
I hope so too! Thanks
Hi Jim! I know you are not a fan of footed vases or footed bowls, myself I love them!. You asked about suggestions for small cores. Could you turn upside down and incorporate them into casting to make an interesting foot to your projects though? You could even shape them to have feet instead of just being an interesting base. Just a thought
If you can get it lined up correctly that would work. By the way I love footed vases and bowls, lol. Thanks
I'm not really a fan of that light of a shade of green, tho with that being said WOW. That turned out absolutely beautiful. How the resin filled those voids in the burl are spectacular. The person who got this is thrilled I would imagine.
Thank you very much!
Every time I watch you video I think this is your best piece, and this time is no different. Stunning. Love the designer epoxy. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much!
Gente são Perfeitas suas peças, uma verdadeira Obra de Arte, Parabéns 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏💓
Thank you very much!
Bonsoir Jim
Absolument magnifique. Un vrai régal pour les yeux comme à chaque fois 😍😍
Thanks so much!
RE: The core
It can be used to make a cereal bowl. Many like myself have 1 big/medium bowl for cereal that's larger than the ones that come in a "set" you'd buy at the store. Only need the one, as I'd wash it when I need it and/or after I use it and it is only used for cereal, or sometimes ice cream, when you want a lot, lol.
Thanks for watching!
Really awesome is a good description!
Glad you think so! Thanks
This piece is other worldly. The shadows when looking through the resin gives a ghostly appearance. For me as an avid reader, I’d love a bookmark made from the leftover shavings from the bandsaw. That would be a sweet dream come true.
Thank you very much!
Always love the emerald green. And, I don't think you can go wrong with burl, especially maple. Love they way it catches the light.
Me too, thanks!
The combination of green with the burl grains just pop, a definite marriage of colors. The shape is perfect for this pour and combo. I liked the illumination of the piece since it reminded me of an underwater view in a fish pond. Really beautiful piece! Best wishes on the plans for new home & shop, as well as a buyer for your current home & shop. Will miss your intro river.
Thank you so much!
Howdy Jim.
That initial showing, immediately following the first coat of finish, looked as if you were showing a butterfly wing, amongst leaves. That was cool to see.
Thank you very much!
Beautiful bowl. The shape, color, wood all look great. Nice, nice work. In fact, I started to tell you it was ugly and you should send it to me so you would not embarrass yourself. You do wonderful work. I cannot remember if you have done a bowl in cobalt blue. Anyway, great work. I hope you are cooling down there soon. Thanks for the fun.
Cooler temps are expected for the next two weeks, glad to get a break from the heat! This is the closest I’ve come to cobalt blue. ua-cam.com/video/52FVnHcIv58/v-deo.html
Green is not my color normally but that piece is absolutely fantastic! I love it! I'm sure the new owner will too. Quick question...when you were doing the finish did you change the lathe rotation when you went from the inside to the outside? Just trying to learn! Thanks for another great video Jim!
Yes, it’s just easier to apply the finish’s for me. It won’t make a difference either way. Thanks
Jim an absolutely gorgeous bowl made with the Designer Epoxy and the maple burl.Just got a new 5 gallon pressure pot and can't wait to try some wood and epoxy projects. You have been a great instructor .
Great to hear! Thanks
Hi Jim, I love seeing you find ways to use pieces of burl in a project, and this one turned out beautifully!! I would love to see a similar project using the deeper green colour and maybe a deep blue in it as well. Keep up the great work!!
Thank you very much!
