    Re installing pistons...
I had a similar problem about 35 years ago rebuilding a 1962 Rambler engine. It, like your engine, had just come back from the machine shop. Tried to install the pistons with a ring compressor just like that one. It really kicked my ass! Pistons just wouldn't go in.
Asked my dad if he had any advice. He suggested chamfering the tops of the cylinders just slightly. Took my Dremel tool and a cone-shaped stone, and tried on one cylinder. Piston went in slicker than owl shit! Did that on the rest of the cylinders...made the job easy. Of course, make sure you clean up after chamfering. BTW, the engine ran fine afterwards.

Maybe, but the engine is so light, you can just drain the fluids, remove the manifolds and heads, then lift the block out by hand if you don't have a hoist. I'm of average strength and was able to remove it easily with a helper. You should at least pick up the cheapest small engine stand you can find though if you don't already have one. They're only like $60-70 and are well worth it.

To do a proper job you need to take it to the machine shop to have the cylinders bored and they check all the bearing clearances for the mains, acid clean the engine and coolant passages, check for cracks etc. If you were just fixing- not rebuilding then an in frame repair is possible but this engine comes out so easy it might be better to just pull it out
