On both of my Metro’s I added a 2” exhaust system (standard exhaust is only an inch). I also installed a FlowMaster muffler. The catalytic converter went out at 51K miles on my 96 Metro , so I put in a straight pipe. I kept the same size tire, but I increased the width for better stability on the road. After loosing the catalytic converter and going to a 2” exhaust, I increased my mileage from 48 to 55mpg. My 96 was my 2nd Metro. I bought my first Metro in November of 93. It was a 94 year model. I did go from the 12” wheel to a 13” wheel. I also put on a 2” exhaust system with the FlowMaster muffler. I was getting 45-50mpg, as I had several mtn ranges to drive from Salem, Oregon to LA, California. I had to make the 900 mile trip to LA on Thursday’s after work and drive back home to Salem every Sunday. I got it down to 12 hours to drive the 900 mile trip. I drove my 94 Metro for only 2 years, but I put 210K miles on it. I went through 1 clutch, 2 sets of brakes and 3 sets of tires in the 210K miles. When I traded in my 94 for my 96, I told them that it had 210K miles, but they laughed at me and said that there was no way that I could have driven my Metro that many miles in that short time period. That was before they added the extra digit onto the odometer, so it only showed 10K miles. Back then the Costco car buying was different. A Metro was $100 over dealer cost and a Cadillac or Lincoln was $1K over dealer cost. My 94 Metro had a $300 rebate, so I bought it for $200 below dealer cost. I paid $5,700 for it in November 93. When I traded it in for my 96, they thought it had “Low mileage” because the odometer read 10K miles so they gave me $4,700 trade in. Now that I’m retired and in my late 50s, my wife and I are looking for a 93-94 Metro Convertible in good condition with low mileage to puts around in during our summer months.
Thanks! I've been successful with the gas savings, but would be lying if I said I wasn't looking at investing more into the metro. I may do exhaust and a lowering kit to help the mpg and enjoy it a little more!
I don’t know where you live, but we have Michelin Cross Climate 2 tires on both our Outback and Forester. They’re Awesome tires on dry, wet, slushy and snow covered roads. Their a quiet tire and we haven’t noticed them taking our mpg down.
Thanks for the link for the hubcaps, they look cool and I am ordering me a set. I'm going to play with making my own rear fender skirts. Thanks Mike from Nebraska
Pretty cool stuff. Do the tires have less overall mass. If they are more do you think stop and go would suffer? My thought is it takes more at the low end to turn them over. Big win for highway driving :)
I think it would be less mass. Stop and go is definitely worse. I'm using the same amount of throttle and just going slower. Overall got a 1-1.5 mpg gain
I'm thinking about buying an old Metro as I will be working about 30min away. What should I look for on these old cars? Anything to stay away from? I do want AC as I live in the Midwest and the summers can get HOT!😊
The only thing that would be hard to work with is an engine that needs a rebuild. They say these engines idle roughly because they are only 3 cyl, but inwpild make sure it isn't excessive. Post 1996 has OBD to clear codes and run monitors... must be a 5 speed trans for best mpg!
Damnit! I just ordered new hubcaps for my 97 metro and I think I’m gonna have to return them now. Those chrome saucer caps look awesome and they probably help with the mpg a tiny bit 😊 good choice on those. I’m assuming they’re not Origional right? I’ve never seen those on a metro before.
The only time my 94 Metro saw 55mph, was when it was on its way to 85mph. I had a personalized license plate frame on my Metro’s that said Zero to 60 In 15 minutes.
my renegade had 215/60r16 and i replaced them with a 215/70 and taking into account the difference the mileage was the same, even though they are almost an inch taller
@@FortuneOffRoad i have to add about 3% to actual miles. MPGs worked out to basically the same. i get better mileage leaving my tools in the gang box at work. the samurai on the other hand 205/70r15 to 30x9.5s i have to add 12% to my odometer so make up for the tire size and mileage went from 27.5mpg like clockwork to about 21-23mpg with 30s. 4.9 t-case i did last summer helped a lot, its back up around 24mpg now
Where did u get the hubcaps i rolled my geo in he rain and lost one need to get some new ones would love to know where u got them its a red 2000 aswell
I have same body 1995 Suzuki Swift HB 4cly sohc abs. I went from stock 155 80R 13s i have used 175 70 13 find better handling and better stopping power I find. 165 80 13 ! Does it actually work? Increasing mpg. I get 37-39mpg city 41-44 mpg.
I don't believe those stickers on tires. I got Comforser all season for my Volvo and very impressed with driving in rain & snow for a all season. Says it will decrease fuel economy on my Volvo but doesn't it increased it by 4 mpg!
I run a 165/80R13 8ply forceum mt tire on my metro. And I still get 40mpg get lots of compliments on the tires. Not really loud either I can't hear the tires when I'm driving
I loved my 1999 Metro hatchback 3 cylinder 5 speed. It sounds just like yours's going down the road. . I got 50mpg average for a tank of gas using stock size tires 155/80R13. I used Synthetic oil and didn't drive it hard. I sold it with 326,000 miles with original motor and transmission. Here is a link to my last drive home from work the day I sold it. ua-cam.com/video/KWa9bpZJwms/v-deo.html
I used to run Douglas Brand tires from Walmart on my metro. It was a good all around tire for cheap.

Love it, that's a great story. What Dlowmaster muffler did you use?
@@FortuneOffRoad I honestly don’t remember which FlowMaster muffler I used. It was too many years ago.
Love the strategy of offsetting costs on the cool vehicles by driving the mpg getter. I'll go for the 4x4 + Metro deal any day!

@@JayChuckOnFire right they are not original. I noticed almost a 1 mpg increase
Great video, I knew you were a Metro guy.
In more ways than one
Next time put some 145/80r13s on
its what i plan on doing
Pretty sure it won't be long before you put a lift on the metro and stick some 31's on it.
Don't tempt me!

I broke all the rules I'm on a 185/60/15 aluminum wheels much lighter then the steel wheels but the handling is where there's a big difference
Rules are made to be broken 🤘🏻
I went to 195/50R15 with the alloy wheels. Looks nice, but got a 3 mpg hit for it. These were Waterfall (made in Turkey) EcoDynamics from Walmart.
What did the 15 inch wheels come from?

Have a 94 wagon. 12 in. tires and want go to 13s...........do I need different rims???
You sure do! Might even want to go 14" wheels so you have more tire options

need more geeo content

i recently got one and im obsessed. i wish there was more content on youtube tho for my new found addiction. youre on the geo forum ??@@FortuneOffRoad
I believe it will not read the speed if the tires correctly, the originall tires were so small i buy pizzas bigger then the metro pizzas
Correct, these are .035% off.
If you go under the peak torque curve of the motor it could work against you The motor works harder it'll consume more fuel
That's a good point. It ended up netting. E about 1.3 mpg after a few months of testing
