    Great tips. I've actually gone rogue :) and instead of packing cubes I do a file fold - I find that I can fit much more in that way because I fold everything to the same size and can really squish it down. Plus if I need to live out of my suitcase I can see every single piece of clothing at a glance. Works for me!
    My best tip is to keep your charger cords wrapped up with a binder clip. When you plug your charger in at your destination, clip the binder clip to your suitcase. You'll never forget your charger ever again!

      Good video. Thanks. Depending on destination I use all compression cubes, no cubes or a combination.I read a hack from one of your subscribers to use painters blue tape on the outside of the cube and mark what’s in it. I purchased a couple of sets and the electronics bags you recommend. They are great! I learned several new things from this video!l And as a personal comment: I was waiting in my Uber/Lyft car to reach my airline departure area at Austin Bergstrom airport and saw two women travelers crossing from parking to departures. Both using your recommended suitcases and one had the black and striped personal item bag you frequently use for travel. I definitely noticed a distinct Travel Tips by Laurie vibe!! Very fun. Love your tips, Laurie! I use a different method for packing, I start by only packing my suitcase, 80 to 90% full. I keep everything very neat and organized with travel cubes, and I don’t use all of the packing tips like putting things in the corners and separating my travel pouches. I like to keep my bag clean and organized during my travels and this allows me to easily access things. However, after I’m done purchasing all of my souvenirs I use all of your travel hacks for the trip home. At this point I’m not concerned about being able to access things and using every corner of my bag allows me to bring home a lot of souvenirs!!

    Hi Laurie, great tips. I'm carry-on only (wife of a DFW pilot). I disassembled my toiletry bag, dispersed the solid contents in the nooks and crannies, and then packed the bag flat. I only need the hangup bag once I'm on the ship or in a hotel room. Put my socks in the corners of the compression cube (a corner is a corner is a corner). That reduces the bump in the cube. Thank you for the long haul; what I wore to Belgium information.

    Great ideas Laurie. I use compression cubes, so it doesn't occur to me to also pack some clothing outside of those cubes as well, it's a great tip. I think I've shared this before, but I have a very minimalist toiletry kit (basically just one small bottle of contact solution, one lens case, a small bottle of wilderness wash, a foldable tooth brush, and toothpaste tabs) in my personal item bag, then pack the main toiletries bag in my carry on. The wilderness wash (Sea to Summit), BTW, works fine for hair, body, hand laundry, and washing cook mug/mess kit in the hotel sink. Your tip about having a few extra clothing items in a compression cube in your personal item bag is a classic, but I would add to that, make sure all those items mix and match with your airplane outfit. You want to choose your airplane outfit for comfort first and foremost, but also to maximize your outfit possibilities in case your bag is lost and you have to rely on just those items throughout your trip. (Remember, wearing clothing onto the plane does not mean you have to keep every item on throughout your flight! Take off the outer layers, fold them into a packing cube you have folded in a pocket, and use them as a pillow during the flight.) So, make sure the top or two in your personal item will match all the items in your flight outfit. In warm weather, you can save space by packing a silky tank/shell with several filmy translucent scarf-like tops that go over it. The whole thing will take up hardly any space and give you tons of outfit possibilities - the silky tank can be washed in the sink every night and be dry by morning. I have gone through dozens of pill organizers trying to find the best one, and finally discovered the "skycase" (on amazon) which will hold 3 weeks worth of my prescriptions meds (I have 3 prescriptions) in the largest compartment, and still has 10 compartments for various OTC meds that I might potentially need on my trip. The whole thing folds down to roughly the size of an Altoids tin. Don't forget to add a few silk scarves to every travel wardrobe - they take up virtually no space and totally change the look of every outfit.

      I got that striped backpack too, in pink. When I'm not flying, I use it as my "travel and just-in-case provisions bag", and it lives in my car all the time, along with my just-in-case motel bag. The pockets are great for organizing cook mug, indoor (immersion coil) and outdoor (esbit stove) cooking options, mess kit, dehydrated camping meals, quick snacks, and beverages. I could live out of it for at least a week before having to leave my hotel room if I had to! as well as having plenty of food in my car in case I get stranded somewhere or slide off the road and wind up buried in snow. When you live in Canada, you have to think about surviving winter accidents and being stranded in snowy conditions!

    • @jenharvey3397
      @jenharvey3397 3 місяці тому +4

      It is so important to make sure you can lift your luggage into the overhead bin yourself! Every single time I've flown I've seen multiple passengers insist that the flight attendant put it in there for them. I find it staggering how rudely some people do it too. Don't be that person!!

    Several points here. First, I love that sweatshirt you are wearing. Next, when I have a bulky item that won't roll to the same size as all the other items, I fold the bulky one and put the rolled ones on top of it. Another thing is my wheelchair battery--I gate check the travel wheelchair but take out the battery to put into my carry on item. I must save room for it. You might want to check and see if that battery qualifies as a medical equipment because many airlines allow medical devices and don't count towards carryon/personal item.

    • @kays749
      @kays749 3 місяці тому +4

      It doesn't count as a personal item, but I still have to put it in something to carry it into the plane. I'd rather not carry two bags when I can make it one. I need my hands free so I can grab the seat backs to make it down the aisle since I can barely walk.

    When I pack flat I stagger shirts so neck to center fold and then center fold to neck are layered. Even T-shirts have a bit of a lump and it makes a difference the more you have. I use a shirt "sleeve" for collared shirts and dresses. Most come with a plastic folding board so everything is the same size. The mesh cover is adjustable so it also tends to help compress.

    I love using the cubes to keep things organized, but I always have plenty of room in my bag because I just want it to stay light so I can easily fling it into the overhead bin. Also, I always bring socks and such that can be left behind in case I need to have room anything I buy while out of town. If I buy anything that won’t fit, I mail it back to myself. That is often cheaper than paying for luggage and means I have less to lug around the airport. I spent six weeks in Europe with just a small carry on backpack. About halfway through the trip, I had gathered enough purchases that I was worth putting together a box to send home. A couple of the items were breakable, so I used a skirt that I had worn at the start of the trip, that I no longer needed, as packing material. This gave me a little extra room in the bag for the remaining purchases later in the trip. My box arrived home just after I got back.

    I've been flying with carryon only since my bag was delayed by 2days on a trip ages ago. Ever since I have been utilizing so many tips to even decrease the size of my carryon bag: also to keep the weight of the bag, unpacked, as light as possible. I have always been a tote/large purse personal-item girl but I started using a backpack a couple of years ago and I might not ever go back to a tote. I'll check out the tote you showed in this video as it looks right up my alley. I fly domestically in two days and I've been pre-packing for a few days now. I have two of the Tripped compression cubes and absolutely love them. They are a game changer for lightweight and smarter packing! I still use some small Eagle Creek compression packing folders that I have from years ago but now that I've used the compression bags, I prefer them. I have used your tips and they are super helpful. The packing of shoes separately in the bag is fantastic, as is utilizing little pockets of space. Before my upcoming trip I'll do the "shaking down" of the suitcase to see extra space develop!
    Great video. Thanks Laurie~

    great tips, as always, thanks! i used to pack my pills in pill containers. but since i need to take them at 3 different times during the day, they don't fill out the space of each container. so now, i go to walmart, and i buy a pack of zip top bags in the craft or pharmacy section, and put my pills in them, and i write on each one, which time of day to take them. the bags take up a lot less space than the hard plastic containers. the zip top bags are about 2" x 3". you get 50 in a pack in the pharmacy dept, and 100 in the craft dept for a dollar or two.

    I use a vacuum bag for my clothes and pack in the "front side" of the suitcase and fill in around/beneath it (on the ends where it's thinner and raises up) with socks, underwear and/or other small items.
    I have narrow toiletry bags and my Hot Tools One Step that fit around/ between the rails of the suitcase handle.
    I also have a personal item bag that has a separate compartment just for shoes underneath, so that helps get them out of my carry-on bag. I could also pack one pair of shoes and an extra set (or two) of clothes in there instead.

    Travel Tip! If you are going to buy anything on your trip like more clothes or souvenirs, leave room in your suitcase! I've been prepacking my soft shell suitcase for a trip to see if I need to remove items to not be overpacked. I will live and die by my comprehension cubes, but it is SO important not to stuff them! I didn’t know this at first and when I first used them, I hated them. They were taking up so much extra room because they became domed when I stuffed them! Like you said, making sure they lie flat once compressed is ESSENTIAL. Using the right size of cube for the bag you are using is so important as well. Once I got the hang of them, I can’t leave home without my cubes!

      Packing lightweight, non bulky items is the key. Silk, cashmere, merino wool, and polyester high tech fabrics etc are all lighter weight than sweatshirts, hoodies, sweatpants, jeans etc that are cotton, cotton poly blends. Natural fibres and high tech fabrics breathe, are perfect for layering, and are generally easy to handwash or machine wash with faster drying times than cotton and cotton blends. For example, 3 cashmere or merino sweaters can weigh the same or less than one cotton sweater/sweatshirt/hoodie.

    The last few trips I packed each day's meds/vitamins in a tiny, sturdy ziploc bag & marked each day in marker. Worried about not having original labeled meds containers, so saved the paperwork from pharmacy that always comes with scripts, just to verify dr. approved & any questions authorities might ask. Takes no space or weight! Also plan to do hand laundry, so pack a couple pants hangers with clips, as sometimes there isn't anything to clip clothespins onto. these can hang on shower rod or doorknob!

    I've found plastic pill containers are too bulky for me. You still have to deal with them when they are empty. Instead, I buy the small plastic pill bags at the drug store, that come in packs of 30 or 35 & are very cheap. Since I take 6-8 pills a day, I put each days meds in the small zipper bag, adding a few more days than my trip, just in case. They take up minimal room & I can stick them in places that nothing else will fit. The empty bags can be brought home or just tossed in the trash. I keep my hard plastic pill cases to use at home.

      I finally got an Away during the pandemic when they had their first ever half price sale. Of course, the biggest selling feature of those is that they were the first (I think) to include the phone battery. I did use that feature, even though I barely know how to sue a mobile phone at all, an the only thing I do with mine is make the occasional call and take pictures. The Away has some features that make it easy to travel with, I can pack very slightly more into my Away bigger carry on than into my Level 8 (I have the pink Level 8 that is the same model as your pickle one). When I flew domestic within Canada on West Jet, they made me gate check my Away case even though it was supposedly within the carry on limits. It was a full flight, but I had paid extra for an exit row seat so I should have been OK with it. I have not yet had a chance to fly with my Level 8, but I do like it better than the Away so far. One thing about Away, their finish (I got a glossy limited edition one) does not survive even one trip, it came out of its first ever trip in the luggage hold looking like it had been recovered from the wreckage of a plane crash. I'll use my Level 8 next time I fly, I expect to like it better than Away.
