I really scale back on a lot to be able to fly carry-on only. I wear minimal jewelry and only bring what I am wearing. Toiletries are the hardest for me but skincare is pared way down and cosmetics to the bare minimum. Gals I see on UA-cam bringing 5 purses, 5 pairs of shoes and a full make-up bag with a stack of brushes and huge eye shadow palettes is just crazy to me.

I prefer the laundry sheets as well. They’re also great because they don’t count as a liquid.
However, a lot of people are fanatics about using Tide laundry detergent only which is why they get away with charging so much for it no matter what size you buy.

You can also use Dr. Brenner's all in one bars of soap. It is all natural. Can use it to wash your hair, body, hands, face, as well as using it to wash dishes, and laundry. It can also be made into a creamy liquid soap and said that you can use it as an all purpose cleaner and use it as toothpaste. All I would really need to bring is my hair and body moisturiser.😊❤

Travel guide Sarah Murdoch (Adventures with Sarah) literally weighs every item of clothing as she decides what to pack in her small backpack. Even with bringing a couple of pairs of shoes she keeps the total weight, including the bag itself, to about 16 lbs. She focuses on layering and a harmonious color scheme. Her videos are a good complement to Laurie's.

Thank you whoever mentioned the gallon ziploc in the seatback pocket tip - tried it for the first time when I flew home yesterday, and it worked better than I could have ever imagined - I didn't have to pull my backpack out once during either flight! Remembering to take out anything and everything that I put in the pocket is a bigger concern for me than what germs might be in the pocket, but it still works just as well for remembering as it does for keeping things clean.

@@matthewsimmons643 The one I was referring to was someone mentioned using a gallon ziploc and putting everything we need for the flight itself in there and putting that bag in the seatback pocket, so that all of it is handy and the bag keeps it clean; it also eliminates needing to get into the personal item during the flight, because everything we're going to need for the flight is in the ziploc.

I have just returned from a 6 day interstate trip and I’m now packing for a 14 day international trip. In both cases, I count the number of days and divide by 2 for the number of tops required, and divide by 3 for the number of pants required. They clothes are rotated to air between wears and can be hand washed if required.
My travel clothes are not included in this calculation. I usually throw in one extra top. My underwear is always one for each day and 2 spare. I don’t pack jewellery or cosmetics and it’s always carry on only for me.

I used to pack a cheap Walgreen's carryon sized canvas suitcase INSIDE a check bag on the trip over and took a Travel Pro International sized carry on bag. This was because I was going on buying trips. One time, I brought home an entire set of china purchased in France in the carryon Travel Pro. Not a single piece broke. Now I always pack a Le Pliage folding bag inside my carryon Travel Pro, just in case I need to check the Travel Pro on the return triip.

I have art posters and maps that I have framed and put up on the walls of my home to remind me of my travels, a key ring of THE LITTLE MERMAID from the shop at the Little Mermaid Statue in Copenhagen, coffee cups purchased abroad and certain perfumes and scarves that I cant get in the US. I look, wear and smell these items all the time and they always remind me of my great experiences in other countries. I love your videos Laurie, and as a Laurie myself it makes me smile that you are also a frugal voyager! The only thing I've done in the past that I haven't seen mentioned anywhere (maybe it is too basic??) is to use a single piece of paper towel folded in thirds lengthwise to pack necklaces. Place one necklace in each fold, and re-fold up, being careful to keep the necklaces in each fold. Then take the long, folded paper towel and carefully fold in half in the other direction three or four times. You end up with a little rectangle that you can rubber band to hold or just tuck in somewhere, and your necklaces stay separate and tangle-free!

I use snack size ziplock bags to pair a necklace with earrings. Then I put those snack sized ziplocks into a quart sized ziplock pushing the air out of all as I zip them up. This keeps all my jewelry together in a flat pack, but also keeps my necklaces from tangling together. And because all the ziplock bags are clear everything is easy to see without having to dig around. I don’t take a lot of jewelry so it’s like 3-4 snack bags full.

Great video as always Laurie. As I age, I become more aware of the importance of minimizing weight as well as volume. I have always worn a many-pocketed travel vest on the plane, and I keep my passport, all my ID, and cash in inner pockets, except when actually handing the passport to TSA. I did actually get one of those passport booklets, but since I always keep my passport in an inner pocket, it has been one of my more pointless purchases. While I love my LL Bean all in one hanging toiletry/makeup/first aid organizer for car travel, I have learned from you to use smaller pouches for air travel. I replace liquids with solids whenever possible, which also helps with weight. Toothpaste tabs instead of paste, most liquids replaced with dry soap sheets made for camping, a small shampoo bar instead of shampoo (the shampoo bar will work as body soap as well). I like very small cross body bags for daily use (I hate schlepping around a heavy bulky purse), the Kipling triple zip Alvar cross body bag is my bag of choice, it is small, thin and lightweight, yet will hold a lot. One thing I do to cut down on packed weight, I use any additional bags as packing cubes. So I bring only one purse per trip, generally the thin zippered Kipling Alvar, occasionally a Vera Bradley triple zip hipster. I slip it inside my personal item bag packed with accessories such as scarves and jewelry. If I plan on doing a lot of walking/hiking, I bring a sling bag packed with my hiking clothes, small first aid kit, bandana, foot care kit, and maybe a water purifier straw. For your question about jewelry, I pack very little, and I really don't pack anything that needs "protection". It is really stupid (IMHO, of course!) to bring expensive or fragile jewelry when flying. I'll usually have 2-3 necklaces and 1 few pairs of earrings when I travel, and I choose small ones that take up hardly any space. Instead of the valet tray, I pack a dollar store bandana. It weighs next to nothing and can also be used to cover your head from the sun, soaked in cold water and placed around neck to keep you cool, put over your face if there should be smoke from a fire, even used as a makeshift pressure bandage, sling, or tourniquet in case of injury. And if you should happen to forget it, hey, it was only a dollar! Rather than paying to do laundry, I use a Scrubba Wash Bag as one of my packing cubes (it's also a dry bag) and pack a packet of dry laundry soap sheets (smaller than a Tic Tac box, and has 50 laundry sheets.) It makes it really easy to wash just that day's clothes out in the sink every night and hang up to dry overnight. I always pack only solid colour bottoms, then I can wear patterned thin tops, and I top with solid coloured over layers (sweater/jacket/shawl)

I snatch all sorts of empty containers to reuse later because even sometimes the "travel sized" product is too much for my needs. I sometimes need to use a child's medicinal syringe to get the product loaded through a small hole in my scavenged containers, it it's so easy! Just pull the plunger, add product to the tube, then reinsert the plunger. Squirt into the smaller container and return left over to the large bottle. I just got Gold Bond at your recommendation - thank you!

Been using the oral syringe hack since college, mainly with toothpaste - I tried squeezing directly from one tube into the other, but for ones that were the same size openings, it didn't work so well. An oral syringe solved that. I don't think there's anything I use that has an opening too small for even that, but if I ever ended up with one that did, I have an irrigation syringe that I can use.

Great tips: I try to pack less/lighter for each trip. For jewelry, I put necklaces in snack size baggies- one in each so they don’t tangle, and earrings in those mini zip locks you showed (also use those for my pills!).Then I put all the baggies in a larger zip lock if there’s room, if not, I stash the larger one for when I arrive so all the little baggies can get corralled after their trip tucked into all the nooks of my suitcase. For clothing, i do the same color coordinating you suggested, and lay it all out. Then pare down, til I’m at least weight. So between 3 or 4 tops that match my pants, I pick the two lightest weight ones to take. Between two dark pants I pick the lightest weight. It’s almost a game: what can I swap out that’s lighter? I even cut my shampoo bar into small chunks and just take one in a baggie. What fun! Maybe I’ll leave myself home next time to save even more weight! 😅Love your videos! Thanks again!

I have posted before but for jewelry I use small ziplock bags that are used by vendors to keep your jewelry untarnished. This way I can keep item separate. I then place them in a small soft bag that has pockets on each side. I will store earrings and rings in the pockets on one side and larger jewelry in the other one. The pouch is small enough to place in my personal item. If I wanted to I could just use the small ziplock bags and put them in my purse pocket. I always have a cheap pair of flip flops in my carry on. I slip them into the outside pocket. I use them as slippers and wear them around the hotel room. I have a pair of men’s sleep bottoms that are super thin and light weight to wear when i am lounging around the room. They are black and look really nice. In a pinch I could wear them to travel in. They look like normal black comfy pants. I have a short sleeve top that matches them for sleeping but I could also wear it as a normal top if needed. They are made from dry fit fabric. Throw on a hoodie and I could wear them to the airport and no one would know I use them as pajamas. 😃

Then I select neutral bottoms, and fan out 3 tops that go with it on my bed. It really helps to have the visual! I have issues with what outerwear to pack. I try to stick with neutrals, maybe a button-down shirt can double as a light overlayer, a mid-weight jacket, and for certain locations, a heavier item. I'd be very interested in a video that deals with that!

I wear either pearl or diamond stud earrings that go with everything and I even sleep in them. Last year we went to Turkey and I took several scarves and that took away the need of necklaces. This year we are going to Bali where I will buy a pretty shell necklace that will go with my pearl earrings and just wear that. I can’t believe how much less I pack now after watching your videos.

I just got into the sudoku packing where you have a 9 square grid similar to a tic tac toe grid that is labeled for top, bottom, and layering piece. They match vertically, horizontally, diagonally, and the corners. I took some sewing interfacing and copied the grid so to pack, I just put one clothing item on each square, then pack them in packing cubes. Using this system, my young grandkids can easily plan and pack their own clothes. Then just add underwear, nightie, swimsuit, and dresses if you’d like.

Currently on a trip, and once again, managed to pack in just my backpack (it was a bit more full than I was hoping for, but still managed to easily fit everything into it). I decided about 2 1/2 hours before I left (so about 1:30 a.m. Monday morning) that I was going to bring both the sneakers and the sandals (instead of just the sandals), and I'm really glad I did, because the sandals would not have been comfortable enough for certain things, but they're super low profile (both together take up less space than one of my no-heel mary jane style dress shoes), so they still fit into a small amount of space (I use the drawstring cotton bags from my wool dryer balls because they're the perfect size for my shoes - I'm a W7-8, and both sandals fit into one (the bags are the Branch Basics dryer ball bags, in case anyone's wondering)). My mom was flabbergasted that I managed to pack in only my backpack - again - so I spread out everything I packed on my bed once I got there so I could show her exactly how much I fit into my backpack. I'll be bringing a suitcase of some description next month because I'll be coming for camp, but I'm still planning to keep it to a minimum; still trying to figure out how I'm going to pack my bugle, since it got dented by someone else shoving his bag against it in April (not enough to change the tone/pitch, for which I'm eternally grateful because there wasn't time to get it fixed if it had, but enough that I was highly unamused) - might wrap it in my towel inside its case, which means I wouldn't have to fit my towel in somewhere else.

    • @TravelTipsbyLaurie

And I don't bring any jewelry, at least when flying - just a necklace-like thing that I only take off if it's going to get wet (shower, pool, etc.), my watch that also has my med ID plate on the band, and my EMF shield, which is also a bracelet. My ears aren't pierced, and I only have one pair of clip-ons that work for me, and I only wear them for very special occasions - concerts, Christmas Eve midnight Mass, weddings where I'm actually part of the wedding party (actually forgot them for my friend's wedding, but it worked out because I ended up with an ear infection that would have made it extremely painful to wear them), etc.; they're little gold simple rosettes with tiny pearls in the middle, so they go with everything (imho, they make me look more grown up and sophisticated, but they were my grandma's (her ears weren't pierced, either) and they're literally the only pair of earrings I've ever found that actually work for me, so I don't wear them often, and when I do pack them, I pack them in a little red heart-shaped earring case (was also my grandma's) so they don't get bent or broken in transit, since they get packed in my nylon drawstring toiletry bag, so there's nothing else to protect them; it's a really small case, though, smaller than your typical small stud earring display box that has the little pillow inside, so I can easily afford the space it takes up).
And my mom mentioned to me for the first time yesterday afternoon about the possibility of her (and presumably someone else) driving out to pick me up and drop me off next month, instead of me flying, since what days I fly is pretty much entirely determined by whether 2 very specific seats are available (one particular seat for the small planes, one particular one for the big ones; fun fact - the window seats on CRJ200s are wider than the window seats in Economy and Economy Plus on 737-800s and 737-900s).

I don’t travel with real jewelry. For the toothbrush, if I don’t take my electric toothbrush then I take a battery toothbrush from the drugstore. I like my Colgate one. Once I got used to my electric toothbrush a regular one does not cut it. For tops, printed tops, they hide more, lol. And another must is a small bottle of Zero Odor spray. I love that picture of the "pilot and his wife". The cool, endearing part is in the middle. The darker colors make it recede, but when I notice it, I'm always happy to see it again. Cheer up, kid. You're almost grown.

Lots of helpful tips ! Thank you. I'm planning to pack for a 5-day trip that will include at least 2 dressy occasions (wedding & reception and a formal dinner) and the rest of the time more casual. Trying to go with just my carry-on and personal item bag - - no checked bag. I love hearing all the hacks and tips.

so for jewelry actually i have a small easter egg with packing peanuts in it to put my earrings on and wrap necklaces around. that egg then goes into the stuffing of a dog toy that i took the squeaker out of years ago. everything stays where it was put and nobody thinks to steal a fuzzy hedgehog

I do take custome jewelry. I have that little jewelry clutch, and I pack it in my personal item bag. I do use the small medication pouches for my vitamins and supplements. I did buy that tray for the side of the bed. I love it. It helps you to not leave something on the bedside table. I usually wear jeans on my flight there and I wear the same jeans back and just pack another shirt. Love your tips, Laurie.

Thanks so much for your great tips! I just returned from an international trip and used many of your tips. Thanks for validating plastic ziplock bags...not the cutest, but flexible in both format and use. Despite my cute, coordinated travel bags, I default to ziplocks. I bring several extra clean bags in several sizes for use during the trip. I separate my toiletries by toothbrush/paste and moist towlettes and make it always accessible, in-shower products, and all other grooming products like body lotion and hair styling. I hope you and yours have a safe and fun summer!

You have helped me so so much as we have been blessed to travel more these past few years! I have a tip on a product I can’t live without now… the Bandolier crossbody phone case! It’s a wallet and phone case in one. I use it everyday instead of a purse or bag but especially for traveling. This was an expensive purchase for me but I’ve now purchased a second one because I love it so much. 🎉

For jewelry. I've used a small plastic container - the kind you can get at craft stores or the dollar store. It measures about 4 x 6 x 1. I like it for keeping earrings and rings separate. I can also fit a couple of stretchy beaded bracelets. On my last trip, I brought 2 longer necklaces. I put each in a small plastic bag and packed them in the inside pouch pocket of my suitcase.

Hi Laurie, just returned from Spain and used so many of the travel hacks that I picked from your videos. We absolutely love the compression sacks, we got so many items in them. Myself and hubby purchased a set each 👏 thanks again for a great video. Always look forward to the next one.

Laurie! Thank you! I've been researching what luggage to buy because I didn't think I could use my canvas rolly luggage for a week's vacation to Florida as it's only 20"... but with your tips about reusing my pants (I hate wearing the same pair twice without wash) convinced me I don't need a new luggage, saving me $100-$200!!!! Granted I'm going by train and the luggage regulations are more flexible, I'd rather travel light!

That's how I do it, too - my parents' house is always home base when I travel, so I keep a full set of full size toiletries there, as well as a small number of various clothing items (including a pair of slippers) that I use regardless of whether I flew or drove. The only clothes I actually travel with (unless I'm going to need more than what I have at my parents' house), other than my travel outfit, are a few spare pairs of underwear and a spare pair of socks (because that's enough clothes to get me through an extra day if I get stuck overnight on a layover; can wear my joggers a second day, and can use the hotel shampoo to wash the armpits of my shirt, if needed), plus whatever footwear I'm going to need (I only really have 5 pairs of shoes/boots - flip flops, sandals, mary jane flats, sneakers, and hiking boots - which makes my choices really easy, because generally I only need to bring one or two of those on any given trip (trip for camp next month might be 3, because flip flops for shower/pool and no open-toed shoes allowed at camp outside of that, and I need a pair for church (hiking boots are too hot for that in the summer)), because the sandals can, if needed, work for everything (including church) except camp in the warm months, and the hiking boots for everything (including church - they're a lot dressier than typical hiking boots) in the winter (my parents and I both live in states that get real winter), unless I'm a bridesmaid in a wedding, in which case the mary janes come, too - the sandals aren't dressy enough for that, but they are for just attending a wedding).

Good tips. I really like some of the Opsrey ultralight things. I have their ultralight washbag. It folds quite flat, it can hang, and has a detachable clear section. The clear section can obviously be removed to leave it out for customs/TSA or it simply allows you to put it in another part of your main pack to use the space more efficiently. I've also just go their ultralight shoulder satchel to carry documents in, although haven't used it yet. It really is light and has a detachable shoulder strap so you can use it as a bag organiser too.

Love your tips! My husband and I have travelled a lot, especially to Europe and have learned many things mostly by making mistakes! The longest trip we have taken so far is 1 month. We are now planning a 3 month European trip taking only carry on. We each have a 36 litre rolling pack pack plus a sling bag each. We have done a test run with packing and we did it, but we are always looking for ways to get lighter and would love to hear your tips for travelling a longer mixed journey of planes, trains and ferries, for at least 3 months. (I packed 1 pair of black jeans, 1 grey thin turtleneck sweater, a black long sleeve t-shirt and a black short sleeved t-shirt that has a picture on it. I also packed a sleeveless black turtleneck t-shirt for layering as we are travelling April to June. To the airport I was planning on wearing regular blue jeans and a black sweatshirt with a picture on it.)

I am flying ITA. They also have size and weight restrictions. Carry-on is 17.6lbs and 21.7"x13.8"x9.9". The personal item is 17.7"x14.2"x7.9". I had a hard time finding the luggage and backpack but I finally found them. I am going to practice packing for weight limitations before I leave. I bought a luggage scale as well.

I travelled with ITA recently and had no problems with hand luggage as I have bags designed to suit Ryanair's specifications, which are amongst the toughest around. If you look online, you'll find that pieces are offered to suit the requirements of budget airlines. What really annoys me is that the staff at the gates often don't seem to bother to enforce the rules and I'm sitting there with my carefully packed little bags while people all around me have items far larger!

We go to Mexico the end of August 🎉 this will be our 7th year in a row to go to Mexico. We only pack carry on so I’ve gotten a lot better at it.
For feminine cleaners, I buy the Queen V bar soap instead of using liquid. And I actually prefer it over everything else now. You could buy a new bar and cut off a small section for a trip because it lasts forever! Thanks for all your tips Laurie! I watch your videos every year before we go 🩷

Thank you Laurie for yet another fabulous video. There have been some invaluable tips from other viewers, I always read the comments. One thing that really perplexes me is the nutty dimensions United airlines came up with for the personal item. 17 inches? What?

You'd be hard pressed to fit something longer/taller than 17" under those United seats without it sticking out into the foot space. My 16.9" backpack just barely fits, and even it sticks out a tiny bit. They get a bad rap for some reason, but United's little CRJ200s (50-seaters) actually have more space under the seats than their 737-800s, 737-900s, and at least one of their Airbus models (either 319 or 320), and their window seats are actually wider than the window seats in coach on those bigger planes, too.

For a two week December vacation in Prague and Brno CZ, I only used a carry on and a personal item. Upon arrival I discovered the pants I thought I had packed was still at home! I only had the pair of jeans I traveled in. You CAN wear an item more than once 😅 Undies and thermals were sink washed and dried overnight. I pack an ultra fast dry high absorption microfiber towel which wicks out a lot of moisture from hand washed items.

I used a contact case this past week to carry my moisturizer and face wash. The moisturizer did well and I had more than enough for a week but the face wash got a tad sticky so I may try something else next time. I also use contact cases to carry ibuprofen and Tylenol on trips and in my purse daily. Those little cases can be used in many ways, other than cleaning and carrying contacts!
