Love your tips and hacks. I have a tip for fellow travelers that may have food sensitivities. I have experienced flights where GF options were sold out. I use a steel, thermos type water bottle, chill it in the freezer and add snacks to it, like individual packs of cheese, some celery and carrot sticks, cherry tomatoes, etc. I open it at security and briefly explain I have snack foods in it. I’ve never had a problem at security and the food has been a blessing when connections are delayed.

I just thought of another tip, Laurie. Here in Canada, our virtual monopoly airline industry is far more dysfunctional than yours, and I always pack my personal item on the assumption that they will make me gate check my carry on and lose it, and my personal item will be all I have with me for the trip. One way to maximize what I can fit in it is to have a minimalist bare essentials toiletry kit (the one I keep in my EDC bag) which I put in my personal item, then I put my main toiletries kit in my carry on case. That way, if they do lose my case, I at least have my toothbrush, meds, contacts, and some other small necessities, while I have made more space in the personal item bag for another outfit or two.

@@stephanied6711 As far as I know, hotels and such are not allowed to use the complimentary toiletry items for more than one guest's stay, i.e. if the first person didn't use them at all during his/her stay, the hotel still has to put all new ones for the room's next guest and get rid of the old ones, so I can't imagine why they would charge anyone for taking them - for all they know, the guest(s) used them up and just threw the bottles/packaging away somewhere else. We take them from every place we stay that provides them, and either use them at home (if we either really like them or opened/used them during our stay) or (if totally unused/unopened), once a year or so, donate the ones we've collected to places that need that sort of thing (e.g. homeless shelters); friends of ours collect them and have them available for their overnight guests to use.

Avoid the touristy areas for food. If you go 2 or 3 blocks away, down a side street, you can find better food and great table wine, less expensive and more of a local feel. The trains are inexpensive, and a great way to travel. Learn a little Italian. The Italians appreciate the effort. You pay morr to sit in a restaurant, so at breakfast, stand at counter. Hope you have a great trip.

A great packing hack I saw years ago that ultra lite people are moving towards in liu of all these bags which add up in weight and size is to buy sets of Silicone zip lock storage bags. I am shocked this has not caught on more. I have been using these exclusively for years and have one yet fail or puncture. I bought one set to try and WOW.
I bought 5 sets under ten dollars each on Amazon on sale and not just for travel but their intended home use and for travel snacks.
They come in set of 4 each snack, sandwhich, quart and gallon size. They are frosty clear so you can see through them. They are obviously water proof and hold water without leaking and can be frozen or hold boiling water, or put in boiling water. Dish washer safe.
These bags were invented to replace Zip lock freezer bags to me so extremely more sturdy to last YEARS being thick silcone, more study then thick plastic and environmentally friendly. No zippers to break or other non waterproof or cheap materials to rip or degrade.
These cover your liquids bag, personal care bag, brilliant for makeup, make up brushes, hair, nails, sanitary items, medications, medical kits, tech bags water proofing cords, memory cards, batteries, one as a waterproof phone bag, keeping all things compressed if you squeeze out the air and waterproof.
I pack some clothes in mine. I can fit undeware in one, socks in another, a few bras in yet another a whole set of under garments for an emergency change of clothes, and they compress almost flat.
I put my wet bathing shorts in top in one after a swim.
The snack size is perfect for jewelry, keeping smaller silcone medication bags that you have all together, one for a bathroom bag to store soap sheets and wipes or add water dime towels for bathrooms with no supplies, one for storing spare cash and credit cards and copies of ID, the sandwhich is great for all your paperwork- passport, tickets, key cards and maps. Being Silicone they slip in and out of pack or suitcase pockets so easily.
You can put a travel light in one and use it as a light defuse because it's frosty, like the NU25 headlamp I mentioned in my other post. I have one for my emergency radio.
I keep my laundry sheets in one so the smell does not overpower my clothes... on and on.
The amount of organization is insane and if TSA rips through your bag everything is on display.

I keep packing lists on my computer for every trip, I go to previous ones for help/control/ideas, as I update them after the trip. And I also type Word documents with ALL the data: flights, booking code and ticket number, hotels, adresses and booking ref, passports number and issue/exp date (including visas): whenever I need to fill any form, I copy from the paper. Plus I have control on the expiration date. All printed, all sent to the mail.

I keep all of my packing lists on my computer, too! For my 2 1/2-3 week trip this month, I started planning my packing list 3 or 4 months ago, pulling from previous years' trips to the same area during the same time of year. That trip is now only 2 weeks away, and I'm eternally grateful that I already had the lists - I love (almost) never having to start from scratch. And the updating after the trip of what I brought but didn't use (and why, if I can figure it out), and what I didn't bring but ended up needing - I've found that to be integral in paring down on future trips.

WOW! That is one serious packing list!! "Weeks ahead of time" - I wonder how many people who don't travel often think of starting that early? One thing that is helpful is to always have a "just in case" motel bag in your vehicle, in the event that you should need to stay overnight somewhere unexpectedly. I have had to use mine on a number of occasions. That gives you at least a starting point when you are travelling somewhere on purpose. Another thing I like to do is have a complete hanging toiletries/first aid/ medical bag packed at all times, so that is one less thing to worry about when you start to pack for your trip. Although I have learned from you to break that up into smaller pouches for flying, if it is always there, I don't have to stress about it. I refill mine immediately after getting home from a trip, instead of waiting for the next time I plan to travel. You mentioned forgetting your reading glasses - if they are just over the counter readers instead of prescription, may I suggest two possible backups? (I have both, because I am entirely capable of leaving home with 3 pairs of reading glasses in my purse and vehicle and still standing in Trader Joes an hour later asking some stranger to tell me what the price on something is because I have managed to come into the store without any of them!) One is a small pair of folding reading glasses in a tiny pouch that clips on your key ring, the other is a very flat pair of folding glasses that slips into the inside pocket of my RFID wallet (the small travel one you link on several of your videos). Both available on Amazon (I'd include the link, but I don't think you like us doing that on your videos.) In addition to the bug spray and anti itch ointment, don't forget sting relief pads!

They didn't leak in the luggage and held up nicely the ten days I was there and the return flight home. They're air tight so they stay in the form of being squeezed until you remove the top from the bottle. I filled two each with my lotions, mouthwash, and body wash and used them up in the ten days I was in LV. Also I found them very easy to clean. ~db

Ok. I LOVE that I discovered this. I was traveling from our Yuma winter home to our WA home. I had purchased a shorter plastic bar s like roll up shower mat--- Amazon. I decided I wanted it for one of our WA showers. But!!!! Joy!!!
I took it into each hotel room. It was such a comfort and peace of mind to not have my feet touch the hotel or motel bathtub or shower floor. Usually just an uncomfortable cringe. Plus more secure from slipping.
Then you just stand it up, rinse it off, let it air dry or dry with the used towel, roll it up, put a hair elastic onto it and put into back seat with hotel room carry in essentials. Hardly any space needed to take.
Also, ALWAYS. Night lights, extension cords and a small travel extension cord with usb capability. And a plug in with multiple plug in abilities.
So many rooms have minimum, hard to get to plug ins.

Nice video. I am from India and a lot of travel gadgets may not be available here. I pack my bag as per a list which is based on what activity I do when i get up in the morning. Everything which are small in nature and one tends to forget can be noted down in an "Activity Based" list. For example, when I wake up, I wear my slippers , and go for bathroom chores. So I have to write down slippers, towel, shaving and brushing set. Then I dress up, and that means deo, after shave, and the like. It has helped me to include all small essentials. And as far as clothes are concerned, I tend to wear mix and match with available ones. Another problem in India is the laundry. Not all hotels have their own laundry services and even if they have, it is ridiculously expensive and takes 12 to 14 hours to deliver, since the service is outsourced.

@@TravelTipsbyLaurie That(or rather, the eagle creek equivalent)'s how I carry my lotion all the time (keep one on my nightstand, and one in my purse or backpack), so that I don't have to bring the big 16oz bottle that my lotion comes in everywhere. Extra perk: I don't have to repackage it when flying - the silicone stretches with the pressure changes, and I've never had them leak. Ever. 2oz of the lotion I use is more than enough for me for a 6-week trip to the Midwest for Christmas (6 weeks in the winter in the WY Rockies? not so much, at least for me - I go through it about 2-4 times faster at home as I do when visiting my parents, regardless of the time of year, because of the climate difference). If I do, for whatever reason, need to bring more than 2oz on a trip, I have a 3oz (the old style - the "double lock" ones are 3.4oz) GoToob that I can pack it in, as well as a 3oz version of my 2oz eagle creeks.

I have a couple of tips too. Q-tips and Plackers will fit in smallish empty pill bottles and can go right in the toes of your shoes and weigh nothing.
For charging I use a “Charge Hub”. It’s an about the size of a hockey puck and is dual voltage so all you need is a plug adapter and it has a nice long cord. I have a couple and they range from 7 and 5 USB ports. If you use a USB-C plug you can get little adapters to use any of the ports on the Hub, most have only 1 USB-C port, I can charge my phone, watch, iPad, kindle, fan, and anything else, up to 7 devices, I need all at once without hauling every brick with me. I have watched many of your great videos, but I have not heard you mention inhalers. I always pack my inhaler in my liquids bag. In addition, Schick Women's Intuition Razors have a wide, disposable, detachable razor head with built in shaving product; just add water. The refills come with their own case, so no need to worry about blades. They are a little pricey, but totally worth it. I also recommend for young girl just learning to shave.

Hi Ruth. My son now takes an inhaler; they do not need to be taken out and can be packed anywhere. Safe, happy travels to you!

I “pack” my inhaler in the pocket of the long sleeve sweatshirt I wear to the airport. Then it goes in the bin with my iPad. Even though it doesn’t need to be taken out, if you fly enough, you’ll be pulled aside so they can check it. Sometimes on scans it can look like pepper spray. If it’s in the bin with my iPad, they can always tell exactly what it is.

I really enjoy your content, Laurie! Two ideas to add....An item I pack is an erasable pen so that I can correct any mistakes I make when filling out immigration sheets or anything. Also, when I travel to a country where I don't speak the language, I bring a sheet along with travel icons for different needs (e.g. bathroom, police, wifi password).
