To gauge toiletries for a trip, a few weeks before you go fill your containers and make a note of the day you started using them this way you will know how many days worth you have in each container. Just make sure your daughter isn't using them without your knowledge, otherwise your calculations will be up the spout. 🤣 your travel tips are invaluable thank you so much x

Instead of taking liquid dish soap, I cut a sponge in half. I squirt liquid dish soap on the sponge and let it dry completely. Pack in a baggy. It works great when you wet it with water and are ready to wash something.

I learned from another UA-cam packing hack a really Trick. Unset the liner in your carry-on and put a flat items in between the bars Get it all nice and level and it makes more room for Packing cubes and other essentials. When I use this to pack for a 10 day trip to England, I found that I had extra room after I fit all of my stuff in It was a good tip about putting a change of clothes in personal item bag I do this so before I land at the airport, I can have a quick change of clothes and a wash up so I feel refreshed

Laurie didn't mention weight limits so I looked up US airline domestic carry-on weight limits... 18-20kg! That's nearly three times the weight limit where I live which is 7kg (15 pounds). The luggage/personal item size limits in the US are also more generous than other countries or international flights.
No wonder Laurie can pack so much!
Laurie's tips are great, but be aware, you will have to match your bags and weight to your personal situation.

You are right. Years ago I traveled to Europe with my daughter and purchased international and domestic flights separately. We were carrying one backpack and one carry-on each. When I bought our domestic, low-cost trips I saw that for example: London-Paris was 25$ BUT if you paid 40$ you would have all the rights: seat selection, priority boarding AND free checked baggage (one piece). If you were caught with extra weight, checking your bag would cost… $40!! So I decided to pay the extra cost with the privileges.
At one of the airports there were lots of agents weighing cabin stuff trying to discover people carrying more than 12 kg. When one said to me: “sorry, madam, you’ ll have to check your luggage”, I replied: “no problem because it’s already paid!!!”

Great tips as always and came just in time as we are off on a tropical vacation tomrrow! My husband and I often book aisle/aisle especially on longer flights as then if we need to get up to move around and stretch our legs or head to the washroom we dont need to disturb anyone. We often book window/aisle with hopes that the flight will not be full and we get the row to ourselves and if someone books in the middle then I usually move to the middle and my husband takes the window the person who booked the middle usually appreciates the aisle but we often get lucky, especially lately with getting the row to ourselves. Also thanks to you when I travel when it is cold or cooler i no longer take heavy sweaters but more thin pieces that I can layer, so much more comfortable. People often say I am such a seasoned packer/traveller...love the compliment but I do give you the credit, lol.

One thing which rarely gets mentioned is that many airports will have a drugstore/pharmacy etc after security which sell full-size products which you can take on board so if you're concerned about not finding your preferred brand at your destination you can buy immediately before you fly (especially good for sunscreen if you expect to get through a lot in 10 days). Take an extra ziplock to put it into in case of spills. In the UK the drugstore is usually "Boots" and you can order in advance for collection at the airport to ensure your brand is available.

Hi Laurie. Just back from. 2 week business trip to the US with hand luggage only. Thanks for your advice it really helped for the use of mesh pouches. I have used packing cubes for years. It was successful. No lost luggage. No waiting and no issues at TSA. Louisiana small airport TSA required me to take out food. My aim now is to always travel with hand luggage. Hi Laurie! It was very useful in our last trip to Europe this winter your tip on bringing loungewear in case you need to hang out between activities, tks. Also the tip on taking different sizes of baggies if you are in a AirBnb for seasoning meat and taking sandwiches or snacks for day trips.
My packing tip for you is that I use to pack jewelry (earrings, necklaces, etc) in small organza bags (you can find them in a dollar store), and then throw them in the lingerie bag or any other bag.
Also, in our trips to Europe I always pack one or two sets of plastic-reusable cutlery (from Ikea kids) in case we buy food in a supermarket for a picnic at a park or snack at the train, or late night snack in a the hotel room. Is is always useful and always finds it use hehehehe

I had stopped using plastic bags, cost & not good for the environment. I use glass containers in the kitchen but clear plastic bags for traveling is a must. The zip bags that an item from Amazon come in are a favorite. Unless a plastic bag becomes gross, I wash it in the sink and reuse it the next time we travel. Thanks for the tips and permission to relax a bit about plastic ; )

Just double check with your cruise line to see if they have laundry facilities for personal use, or do you have to send everything out 2B laundry by their staff. I know some if not all Carnival ships have self laundry, and princess ship some if not all of them have self laundry. NCL does not have self laundry. I cannot remember Royal Caribbean and I haven't been on any other Cruise Line. I always fly into Port one day early. We will either use the hotel shuttle to go to Walmart or call for an Uber. I always overpack, and I bring a lot of medicine and comfort items with me. Many times, i end up using all of the prescription medicine and OTC, as well as all of the Comfort items. I will be on a 15-day cruise followed by a two-week land vacation. I am going to perform a dry run of packing this weekend to see if I can get everything into a 21in carry-on and a tote bag. I've been on one - packed for 2 weeks in a backpack (my purse for touring went inside) and smaller-than-standard carryon (I think it's about 19"). I went in the summer. The key was picking just a few bottoms - 1-2 capris and 1-2 skirts - and a handful of lightweight short sleeve shirts (I think I only took about 5) that all could be worn with all of them, plus a nice lightweight sweater and lightweight scarf that I could use to dress up any outfit, as well as my swimsuit, a beach-towel-size Packtowl, and one or two sets of pajamas; for shoes, I brought a pair of flats (for really dressy events, like church, and the formal dinner one night on the ship) and a pair of less formal, more supportive leather shoes for touring (in case it's helpful, I'm generally a women's medium with size 7.5 feet). The socks and underwear I brought were lightweight quick dry fabrics, and I did a little bit of laundry either every night or every other night - used the provided shampoo and did it in the sink - and just hung them up to dry, so, since I did them as I went (instead of waiting until I was out of something to wash any of them), they were dry and already put away back in my suitcase by the time I needed to wear them again. Something to remember for European trips is that, if you want to visit any churches (and a lot of museums have this rule, too, so it really depends on what you're planning to do), you have to have shoulders and knees covered, however that looks for you (whether a dress, capris, a skirt, a quick wrap skirt over shorts, zip-off hiking pants (I've heard these can be especially useful for some in the summer when going in and out of a lot of churches or other places that require knees to be covered), a short sleeve shirt, a scarf/shawl over a sleeveless shirt, or whatever). Since I had never been to Europe before, I didn't have any clue how exactly the weather would compare to places I had been before (for me, dewpoint is actually the deciding factor, not temperature, but I hadn't figured that out yet back then), so I did bring some items on that trip that I didn't end up wearing because it was far too warm for them (I made sure to not pack those things on the next trip).
I packed my clothes by rolling them up and putting them like-with-like in two or three 2gal ziplocs (might've been able to get away with 1.5 or 1gal bags, but whatever), with my shoes each in a plastic grocery bag, and that left me with plenty of space for souvenirs, etc., even in my little suitcase. I did bring some toiletries in a toiletry bag that folded almost flat, but I knew a lot was going to be provided (shampoo/conditioner/lotion/soap), so I didn't need to bring much (floss, toothbrush, toothpaste, brush, comb, hair binders, chapstick, a peppermint lavender foot balm for at night, and that was kind of it). I will mention that I don't wear makeup (no one in my immediate family does), nor do I style my hair with any tools or products, so I didn't have to worry about having space for those.

Thanks for your efforts to help others and your pleasant presentation. A couple of things i would mention. You don't need or use near as much as you think of products. A little drop of toothpaste for example is plenty so pack accordingly. Plastic bags are way more efficient and lighter ( but use good ones like Ziploc brand) than those cute zippered bags with compartments. These bags and compartments add up to space not used and weight, like the light weight backpackers will tell you" ounces make pounds." Use the pockets in your jackets for more than chewing gum. There is plenty of unused packing space in jackets and coats. Finally, the lightest most compact item you can pack is a credit card. You can buy inexpensive t-shirts and other clothing all over the world and if you don't want or have room to take them home leave them. I have a friend that has traveled world wide and will never carry a suit case and for him it is cheaper and easier to buy some clothes to augment what he does have. Thanks again and happy trails.

The material is called Liquid Knit and it's very soft but substantial and will take up little room. I've purchased some tops and they take up very little space.
