It took about 11 days to completely housebreak my dog. He was only 8 weeks old but picked it up really quick, it was tiring initially because you had to be right on it and paying so much attention to what they were doing but it paid off in the long run and never really had any more accidents for the rest of his life.
Sadly he passed away last week as he had pancreatic cancer and i miss him so very much. Seeing little pups though still brings joy to my heart and all dogs are worth it. Just put in the time and you'll have a wonderful relationship with them

I've had a dog before mamy years ago and I don't remember having as much challenges as I'm having now specially with the breed I got which is a Frenchy they're very delicate so I there are more challenges to come but it will get easier for you. I don't regret getting my puppy even though it's so much work cause I've noticed it has helped me a lot with my depression.

Also just be of endless patience. Our puppy didn’t fully train on peeing outside till 6 months old. She learned so many things so quickly but not that. I’m working from home so I’ve been able to be around her 24/7. I chalked it down to just her bladder not developing as quickly as I assumed. But the whole point is she did eventually learn, she is now bell trained as well. Frustration will not do anything to help you or your dog.

Thank you so much for this video! At first my pup wouldn't do his business outside, but would go as soon as we came in. I had to learn to put him back in his crate and reset and eventually he figured it out. Now I'm working on being more attentive when he is out of his crate to minimize and correct accidents. I will be doing what you all suggested!

My 11.5 weeks old pup’s been doing well for a few days with her house training when I carry her outside. Today I’ve been using her houseline to lead her outside. She consistently stops and pees on our way to the door. I just realized that I have been saying, “let’s go out to potty” every time we head out, and she may have learned my verbal marker (potty) and is just doing what I’m asking her to do! Ugh! Sorry to confuse you little girl...I’ll do better going forward. Thanks for all of the information you so freely share here! It’s one of my favorite YT channels!

I have followed all your advices with my two 3-months old bernedoodle puppies and I have had almost no more accidents inside the house. I incorporated a crate and take them out after all those key moments, regardless they show signs to pee/poop, because they do it anyways. It's like they don't realize that they need to do it. This has worked wonders. I have invested a lot of time but I am much less frustrated and I feel more confident that they won't fail. It has allowed me to give them more freedom inside a (still) limited area inside the house. I see that all of us (me, family and puppies) are happier. Thanks for selflessly sharing all those awesome tips with us. Greetings from Chili

Wow! I'm so happy I came across your video. I have a 8 wk old male Shih-poo that I received on Wed. Nov. 25th. I'm training him to go outside but he is being stubborn about the leash. He do not like it at all and I end up taking it off. But I need to keep it on and be consistent with him. I will stop giving him a doggie treat. However, I do praise him and say good boy. He's clever and already have a little personality. Very smart and I do believe he will be potty train.

Hello! I have questions and I'm hoping for some guidance. I've found your channel to be extremely helpful and the most reality based, techniques and advice that are meant for me (average person) rather than the dedicated trainer or someone who has a life to devote to their dog. THANK YOU. A quick layout. Beginning of November I brought home two puppies (don't worry, I already know I was thinking with my heart and not my head, but they were rescues in a crate. You would have brought home both too) I've been working from home for the past couple months but I need to start returning to work. I do crate them (separately), and they don't poop in their crates/in the house ever, about once every week and a half or so one will have a small accident in the crate. I have a restricted puppy proofed area where we spend most of our time and when we leave they are on a leash with me around the house. The girl is pretty much house broken. An accident every couple days but most are my fault, (usually cleaning up another mess before I take her out). They are trained to hit a bell and do when they need to go outside, they are both really good at peeing outside. The boy still averages an accident once a day. The problem is he's peeing while he walks. No squatting, no signals, not in the same area. Usually in the evening he will drip drip drip. We average going outside every 30 minutes, not including right after meals, play, naps, etc. Is there something I can do?
Other concern. They do go into their crates during both night and day and are quiet. I recently recorded them while I ran errands (gone approx an hour) and they barked the whole time. I used the same crating process, I don't make a big deal about leaving or coming home and they quiet when I come home, they know I won't take them out if they're barking. But an hour of barking? Which could turn into 6 hours? This can't be healthy. I live in a home and won't really disturb neighbors but..... They have music on, they have crate only toys, if I know I'm running an errand I save their kong full of food to get them started....Any help would be much appreciated.

My wife and I love your videos and they have been very helpful. My Yorkie is 12 weeks and we don't use Pee Pad for a number of reasons. First, he shreds them instantly 😂. Second, we are retired, so we can take him out often and it's working pretty good. My question for you is, he is tiny (2.5 lbs), so we pick him up and take to the area we want him to go. Should we be leading him on his leash from the house to the ares or does it matter. Thanks for any help!

Hi Ken, thanks for all of the great advice! My husband and I follow McCann dogs for all of our puppy training for our 11 week old golden retriever. Our puppy always goes when we take him outside and we’re working on moving him from the “proactive potty training stage” to where he can tell us when he needs to go. We watched your other video about placing them in front of the door when it’s time to go, but he doesn’t get excited when it’s time to open the door. Most likely because we live on the 2nd floor of an apartment and have to carry him down until he’s a little older! He’s only had a handful of accidents where we’ve cut him off every time and taken him downstairs to finish. We are very consistent about taking him out but he just doesn’t quite understand that he shouldn’t go inside yet. Another factor working against us is that we have a fully carpeted apartment (ugh). Thank you so much for sharing this valuable information. I’m getting a Bichon Frise the first week of March (2020) I’m so excited! I will be training to use wee wee pads for those times that it’s just not convenient enough to go out doors, due to weather/etc. also the fact we just had a motorhome built so we will be traveling a lot. So sometimes stopping in sketchy area’s and or muddy/snowy area’s will just be so nice to have a designated area for him to go in the coach. Also, considering their grooming needs, say right after grooming they have to go out in the mud/rain🤭🐶⛈💨🌪⚡️... So Based on my thoughts, Do you think this potty training of going on pads and going outdoors will work out for us both? Thank you for sharing all your knowledge and experience with us. You have no idea how much you have helped me already! 🙏🏻

Hi there, Latada! The clear boundaries of only going potty outdoors is always a better choice when it comes to puppy learning. If you look at some of our older puppy potty training videos, you’ll see how many people are struggling with the puppy pad process. Traveling does create some interesting challenges, but I think the benefit of having your puppy learn the rules quickly would still make pee pads your second choice. It’s all about clarity! Actually what I have learned is to not leave them outside for that long because then they think it is play time. Have them outside for 5 minutes and if they don't do their business, take them back in but keep a close eye on them for when they will need to go. Hope this can help! :)

I watched another one of his videos and it said to have a 15 minute rule. If they haven’t gone after 15 minutes, you take them back inside (carry them if they try to pee as soon as the come in) and put them in their crate. Wait 10 minutes and take them out again using the 15 minuet rule again. He said it might take a couple tries but what’s one hour compared to them actually going you know?!

Kim Zastrow yes! We just got an 8 week old basset puppy who I’ve been able to train fairly well so far but have run into a similar issue. I’ve read that if you spray where they’ve gone inside before with disinfectant or deodorizer they don’t associate that with a place to pee. That and shorter times might work.

It's a common mistake, Matt! Know that you're not alone. And in fact, I've actually heard other dog trainers suggest to "reward" instead of "praise" when your puppy does it right. For some puppies, it may not create any issue. For other puppies, the challenge is just beginning when you add food to house training. It's easily fixed though, so starting right now you can change your approach to potty training;) Thanks for watching ~Ken

    Hi there,
I live in a condo and we take our puppy out at all the times you described to avoid setting them up for failure. We've had some accidents along the way (our own fault) but the problem were having is she seems to hate being outside in general. Avoiding coming to the front door, going down the stairs etc. I'm not sure how to understand her signals as she ages if she continues to hate to go outside. We've started rewarding her along the steps of her getting to outside (to the door, out the door, down the stairs etc) but i'm not sure what could be causing her to dislike outside?
any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I'm really enjoying your videos and finding them super helpful. Our biggest housebreaking issue is that sometimes, even when we're pretty sure our puppy has to go, she'll just sit or lie down once sh'e outside. We're taking her to the same spot on a short leash, standing still and not talking, etc. After we've given her a good amount of time and she still hasn't gone, we'll carry her back inside, and within a few minutes, she'll pee inside--sometimes right in front of us!

Okay update on our puppies, they’re actually doing amazing. They’re 10 months old now, and we have no issues with kennel training. They find their kennels to be their “safe space” if they’re tired, they go lay down and have no issues being in there while we’re gone during the day. The only downside is that they feed off of each others energy. It helps that they can play with each other though. It’s better than we expected, and we now have two thriving puppies.
Their names are Theo and Ozzy, one black one yellow!

Our almost 9 wk old puppy has refused to potty outside in the pea gravel area we've set up (she will pee whenever/wherever if we leave her to roam the yard which we've since stopped doing). After refusing to potty outside upon waking, and then having another accident minnutes upon our return this morning, we've kept her in her crate and taken her out religiously every 15 min for 5-8 min to no avail. It's been 6.5 hrs, and I just noticed that in between her mostt recent 15 min increments she peed a tiny bit in her crate again (just enough too relieve pressure I'm sure) which is all over her as we've limited here space. Took her out, and of course she refused to do anything. What do you suggest?

My husband and I has a 9-week old puppy. We've been good on taking her outside as soon as she wakes up and after she eats, and she does do her business. But every now and then, she'll still have an accident in the house. In fact, she just went 3 times in the house and 2 of the times I saw her do it! Another issue we have is that lately it's been raining, and she does not like to go on the wet grass. She'll refuse to go unless we keep putting her in her spot. Then eventually she'll go. After watching your video, I'll admit that we have not been using a leash on her. I noticed she does get distracted easily. Now I know we need to put a leash on her whenever she goes outside.

Regarding telling your puppy off in the moment when they pee inside, either with word or hand clapping as you mention, a lot of videos and things i have read have said not to punish or tell the puppy off if they pee/poo inside because it just makes the puppy think that they can't do their business in front of people. Can you clarify this for me because I am confused.

I used the method of clapping and saying no, then picking the puppy up to go outside. Only when the puppy goes outside i would give him a huge reward for doing so. About a month or so later the amount of accidents inside my house was at a minimum. Now he is 8 months old and he has stopped going to the bathroom in the house and instead goes on bushes/grass/etc.

Our pup is 5 months but still wakes us up 2-3 times a night (sometimes only a couple hours apart). We’ve tried ignoring her as she holds it for 4-5 hours in the day but she whines for at least half an hour until someone takes her out. Don Watkins yes, you will have to get up at. Try setting an alarm for every 2-3 hours during the night. And, put your puppy on a schedule. Don’t let him eat too late because they means you will have to take him out more frequently during the night. For example, no food or water after 7 pm.

Ken/Kayle. I have been watching all your videos and my new puppy is doing very well. He sleeps 8 hours at night, no accidents. The one issue we are having is that he CAN hold it that long and we end up having an accident during the day, He's gone potty and we had a training session inside. I looked up to talk to my daughter and looked down and he peed. He was literally at my feet and I was distracted for 15 seconds. I'm guessing I need to be better at setting up a schedule but I wondered if there was something else I should be doing.
