How would I puppy train a 10 week old puppy where their environment is in an apartment on the 3rd floor, so it’s hard to get them outside when they start sniffing

I started with pads. But then I just watched the puppy. Everytime I saw her sniffing around on the floor, I scooped her up and brought her outside. As soon as she peed or pooped, I praised her and rewarded her with a treat. After a week, no more accidents.
@@meena.dwdn1 if you have carpets, get a special carpet cleaner for pet messes that kills the enzymes. Otherwise, your dog will continue to go on the carpet. I bought one called Bubba's commercial pet cleaner. It works great. Wash your carpet first with it, then closely watch her. As soon as she starts sniffing around, scoop her up and bring her outside. As soon as she pees, just call her by name and say, "Good girl!" And hand her a treat. Repeat when she poops. If she poops on the floor, pick it up and just bring it outside on the grass. She'll smell the poop on the grass and get a signal of where she is supposed to go. I have a fenced in yard, so she is now free to come in or out as she pleases.
If you’re watching and frustrated or feeling like it’s not working , I watched this when my puppy was 8 weeks, and started to try with minor improvements , it was like a switch flipped in her head and my last puppy around 12-13 weeks. So I just watched this again, and it really Helped, if you’re at the 8ish weeks mark, hang in there and stay at it ! Then come back to refresh yourself, seemed to really help !
The best piece of wisdom I’ve learned watching all these videos as a new puppy owner, is that if they have an accident, it’s my fault. The puppy is doing what it’s supposed to do. He’s a baby, he’s got a small bladder, he gotta go lol if he has an accident, it’s bc I either wasn’t watching close enough or I wasn’t fast enough. He’s doing great tho, thanks to all these tips I’m learning!
Nah my dog is broken I guess. She’s be playing and give absolutely zero signs and just squat out of nowhere. I catch her ever single time. Grab her and bring her outside. She never goes.
@@Swole_Cole_ Exactly, caught him in the act many times but if he's stopped while peeing, he just stops. Also, many time he knows where he's supposed to go and goes there to do his business, I give him treats and think "Yeah, he's trained!", but other times, he just runs out, sniffs for a while then comes back in and does it right in the room.
One thing I hate about the Internet is people bragging about having their puppy house trained in 2weeks. It defeats everyone dealing with different environment and different pup personality/health/breed.
Today's been hard for me and my pup. I didn't get her to poop outside once today, she did it on the living room every time and just moments ago she ate her poop. I really need a house line. I feel like a terrible owner.
I have a small dog so I had just pee pad trained her. I watched her like a hawk so she was fully trained in just 3 days. I was impressed by how quickly she picked it up and learned. As far as crate training I used to put her in there with a treat and 3 years later I still praise her when she goes in so it's become a pleasant and rewarding experience for her.
Its all about consistency. The more work you put in the quicker and betterresults you get.. this nobody ljmes waking up several times in the middle of the night to make sure their dog does their business. But its necessary in order to train..
I'm puppy sitting/training my mom's puppy rn and she's so so good! I know her signals - she crouches down and rushes as if looking for a toilet and she whines at me when she needs to go. She goes almost as soon as I put her down. She's the best dog and the easiest to train so far.

The puppy I've had for six days now has only had one indoor accident, only a little and thankfully on the tile floor because he was overly excited. Took him out to finish. That was on the second day and is still his only accident so far. Hes catching the hang of it really well so far.
@@maple8859 It’s going better Maple. We are in a routine now. He’s still not fully house trained but my attitude to it is improving. He’s learning the routine of the house and loving his walks so we’re getting there. Thanks for asking.

What if you don’t use a crate? I have a 4 month old, apparently she goes to the balcony earlier than I take her out to the spot where I want her to pee. Today I realized that when i come from upstairs she get really excited and after q little while she pees again. I figured that’s a new sign. Another thing I’m really struggling with is the biting and jumping on my kids.
I have to treat my 2 year old rescue like a puppy and house train them from scratch. I understand some of it is probably because they are new to my home… but definitely using these videos to my advantage! Thank you.
what I have started doing is put the dog right into the crate while I clean up so she has her 5 seconds to think of pottying in the house = kennel..Idk if it's gonna work but I get to spend alot of time with my dog and she get's alot of attention. she didn't have that in her previous house. I hope it makes a difference.😊 I'll let u know.
One year for Christmas, we put bells on the outside door. Our German Shepherd just started to ring it to go outside, she trained herself! Every time she has to go, she rings the bell. We are getting another puppy in about a month, we are gonna also train the baby to ring the bell, just like her older sis.
House line is a game changer! We're still not quite there, I just missed one because I took my eyes off her to have a swig of water. I knew it was coming so I should've known better.

He is almost potty trained outside; however, the yard in the back yard (fenced area) is in such poor condition for a puppy that puts everything in his mouth (from sticks, limbs, large areas of grassless ground because of trees...and now ants. :( ) A large and nice piece of fesque turf grass was purchased and placed on the back deck. Do you believe it'll be easy to train him to go on the turf grass (which was the reason for the purchase)? And if so, do you have any tricks/ideas? - Thank you again so much in advance. :)

I have an adult dog (3 years old) who I rescued yesterday. Her whole life was spent inside, she never saw outside until recently. After a lot of treats and praise she is now happy outside (although sometimes she freezes up). The issue is, I believe her previous owner had her go to the bathroom inside her whole life, now when she is outside she holds it even if she needs to go, I’ve even spent 2 hours with her outside when I knew she had to go and she whined to go back inside to poo. :(
Have fun! beagles are the best but be prepared to have your patience tested LOL, they're way smarter than they seem and will take advantage of any moments of weakness XD
I got my Newfoundland pup 3 weeks ago and she’s going on 12 weeks old. Right now I’m struggling to get her from sitting under the chair in my room barking non stop. Other than that she is a good good dog.. just frustrating
The only issue I ever had with house training is that when I first got my puppy is was fall/winter, and the particular week that I got him it was very cold and rainy outside, so he didn’t want to go outside at all, and he was only 4 pounds so we didn’t want him to freeze or anything. He was so tiny even extra small dog coats or sweaters were too big on him. Once the weather became a bit nicer the next week, he learned to do his business outside extremely quickly. Being that he was tiny, he constantly got into things and under things, so someone had to be watching him at all times, so we would put him in a pack’n’play for short times(like 10 min max) when we had to do things. He didn’t like that. He would pee in the pack’n’play because he knew we had to take him out to clean it. We didn’t use the pack’n’play for very long lol. The only issue we have now is that he will pee or poop inside when he is mad at us. We will take away a toy he really likes because he has chewed it into pieces and we don’t want him swallowing them, and then he will pee because we took it away lmao.
Yes!!!! Finally someone else comments about the “defiant/manipulative/retaliatory peeing.” 😂 My chi does this and it’s so hilarious (and frustrating) to me that dogs are smart enough to figure stuff out like that. I tell my chi “you definitely are smart enough to know better,” so I take toys until she is accident-free for 3 days straight.

Same. LOL. EVERYTHING seems to be a distraction. I'm glad it's not just us. Don't get me wrong, he does great by peeing at least a little every time we go out, and we go out a lot. Over 15 times a day. But getting to his spot is a chore sometimes. Him trying to eat leaves, flowers, bugs, etc. are bad enough, but here in FL we have a gazillion little lizards everywhere and he wants to chase every one of them. 🤣🤣🤣
i loved the phrase "your puppy isnt trying to be defiant"... um, yes, she is! ours has started revenge peeing!!! if you tell her no one too many time (chasing the cat, chewing on a chair, just flat out biting) one too many no's and she's squatting while she stares at us!
I had a dog who was a revenge pooper. If you corrected him for some misbehavior, you may find a “present” next to your bed, on the side you sleep. It happened to me, my husband as well as our son.😅

The instructions are: either puppy is in his crate or you are interacting with puppy with both eyeballs on puppy, ready to stop puppy from peeing or pooping inside the house. Got super lucky with my pup. From an early age he always preferred to go bathroom outdoors. Easiest training.. was super intimidated glad I got a good boy.
HELPPP!!! Accidentally trained my dog to only pee on the pee pads - I've tried taking her outside, but she'll legit wait until she's back inside to pee on them again :(
Maybe take a pad and put it in a certain spot outside??? It’s a lot of work but since she only pees on pads rn that could help introduce her to peeing outside and that it’s okay. And then after awhile maybe take away the pads and lead her to the same spot outside and see what she does. Just a suggestion :)
I've heard moving the pad progressively towards the door, then put the pad outside the door, then remove it completely, so they will go outside. (Didn't try this myself, never used pads)
Using pee pad is not good idea. Your mistake is your teaching the puppy it ok to potty in the house. Pee pads are unsanitary the smell will get on the floor and it cause bacteria in the house.
My favorite supplement is not over watering. Give 2 times the amount of food in water. NO more. E.g. if they eat a cup of food, they get two cups of water.
I used your advice for potty training and it worked great. However, I have two questions and I’d love advice from the community. First, my puppy alerts me to go outside all the time now, even when he doesn’t have to go. What do I do? Second, now that he’s trained for outdoors how do I start training on the puppy pads indoors?
It could be that you have allowed mixed associations with going outside to potty, for instance going to potty and then have playtime outside immediately after. I saw a video where they said it's very important to keep trips outside using your potty keywords to only that purpose and then having outside playtime a completely seperate occasions /adventure for your puppy :)
After a month of working on potty training my corgi puppy I feel defeated. No matter what I do she’ll pee whenever she feels like it. Especially at night in her crate. Last night I took her out every hour or two and still when I got up there was pee in the crate . For a while she used to be pretty good about holding it. And now it’s just like she doesn’t care. She’s 3 months old. It’s a frustrating and I’m at a point where I can hardly sleep. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong :(. I’m trying to be a good dog mom but she doesn’t make any effort to work with me when she’s in the crate. She’s pretty much only in her crate from 11pm to 5am or so with a potty break at like 2am Now she’ll just sit and cry. Even though she’s been able to be pretty good through the night before. Now whenever she goes in the crate she’ll immediately start to cry. I just want to sleep. I’ve never ever had a dog be like this. And I know she’s just a baby. She’s just 3 months old. But I can’t watch and play with her constantly. I need time to do work or to relax. Im at my wits end.
Its important to take their water away 2 hours before bed… we have a 9 week old pyrennes puppy… because they are bred for cold snowy mountains and we live in Texas she drinks massive amounts of water … once I started taking the water away at bed time she hasn’t had any accidents… first thing i do in the morning is give her a big bowl of water outside and leave her outside for 30 minutes. But I hear you… sometimes it’s really frustrating!!!
I have the same problem with my Jack Russell.. I take him outside he goes, bring him in the house he goes in his crate with limited space it doesn’t work for me! I started to give him water once a day but I feel bad doing that I have been going through this for 2 years now I need help before I move or else I need to re home him
Literally googled "how to stop puppy from peeing inside" because I went to poop and my puppy followed me and as I was pooping she starred me in the eye and pooped next to the washing machine because she knew I couldn't do anything about it🤦♀️
@@ITZZZJOHNYYYYY yeah I’m pretty sure that was the case 😂 we stopped giving her access to the bathroom and she stopped going in there and was fully house trained and after about 2 months we started giving her access again but she doesn’t go in there anymore just outside thankfully 😂
My puppy is almost 5 months old, I got him four days ago and am working on potty training. He came already knowing the crate, a bit shy but is blossoming without the other dogs he was with. He came from a kennel in Mexico and hasn't had much human interaction and I am working on turning that around because he is a beautiful soul, he is really a great puppy. He has so far only had 2 accidents in the house. 1 because I didn't see if he needed to potty before bringing him inside my house the first day and 2 because I was trying to get my son dressed and didn't move fast enough when he decided he needed to potty. But so far he is doing rather well, perhaps it is due to his age but im not sure. We do have potty pads out where he peed (after cleaning it of course) just in case but he does whine when he's looking for a spot so I know and have learned his cues before he does his urgent whines.

I was overestimating how much i can watch my pup. I have a 3 month old and i needed a guard dog for peace of mind and protection ,however she is absolutely REFUSING anything i try. I have a Velcro baby as well as a stubborn pup 😅 sometimes i dont think i can do it
How can i train when my vet told me to keep her off the grass where other dogs have been? ☹️ At least until she’s had her 2 parvo shots. She’s been using the pads for now.

My GR is trained...but carpet confuses him. Most of my house has hardwood floors, so when he feels the carpeted/area rugs underfoot, he decides it’s close enough. 🙄 Every other time he goes to the door, so he knows how to ask. It’s frustrating for both of us.

Thanks for these helpful videos. My puppy will be 10 weeks old tomorrow, so we've just been working on potty training since I brought her home, two weeks ago. Our weather (IL) just went from unseasonably warm to cold and windy, and I'm dreading that we may have some snow in a couple days. She was doing pretty good when it was nice outside, but has started running away from me when I pick her up for "outside" now because she hates the cold. I'm guessing there aren't any miraculous cures for this? I've put a pee pad area in my garage, thinking that maybe that can be a secondary "outside" for really bad days? I've taken her out there for practice and she's really just more curious about the garage than any interest in peeing there. I'm not sure if there is any advice you can give or if I'm just here to vent, LOL! But in any case, thanks!
We have a 3 year old Pomeranian and thought a 2nd would be a breeze. We got a 9 week old Pomeranian pup love him to death the potty training and getting him to sleep in a crate is AWFUL Have had him for a week and last night we were not able to go to bed until he was in bed with us. I have a 9 week old puppy but so small I feel bad even making him wear a collar ;( . I am unable to take him out to the outside and grass until he has 4 months with shots I was told by his vet. I try to keep his wet pad near by so he “remembers” that the spot
I tried a collar on my pup first because he was so small he could get out of the new harness I got for him. Now I can use the harness on him tho so maybe try a harness if you don't like the collar being on your pup
It’s safe to take puppy’s out on the grass even if they haven’t had their shots- aslong as no other dogs have access to the area, or all dogs that do have access are well and vaccinated
The pick them up part of the advice was funny. We have two four month old pups who are 35-40lbs now. They seem to have gotten the idea that outside is better, but they will tank up on the water and then Pee in the house. All the information says to offer them free access to water, but this just means free access to peeing. Maybe if we got a puppy union negotiator to compromise and give us a truce…
I take my puppy outside for two hours at a time, she won't go, she will wait to come in and go, it is maddening. I can't be with her 24/7, I just bought her a kennel, I am working on getting her comfortable with the kennel.
If my puppy is in the crate and i am about to let them out i put everything on first, or just wear shoes in the house and have a coat readily available if they are out
I have mastered putting my hat on first or boots if needed, then picking up my puppy and putting my coat on while holding her. Even if I don't get it zipped, I can do that after she is outside. A bit uncomfortable for me but better than an accident. I also learned that she will not go when she has her coat on. Trial and error.
Thanks, really good information, let me know I have to be more strict with my routine, my challenge is my dog is deaf, we do the go outside thing every morning and several times throughout the day and he goes most times we take him out, the problem is how do I let him know when he has an accident that he did something we don't want him to do, he's a hit and runner so it's hard to catch him in the middle of the act so we have just been picking him up and taking him outside and don't feel like he knows why so we are just stuck with keeping him being tethered to us, wanting him to have the run of the house. Very true. I didn't pay close attention to my puppy one day and he went to the next door neighbour to score heroin. Over the next few months my pup would wait until I was at work to steal whatever valuables I had and sold it at the pawnbrokers to get more heroin. Now, some 8 years later my Bull Arab is smashing things around the house when I don't give him money and I am genuinely scared for my life.
Hello. I have been watching pretty much every video you guys have. They are very helpful. We just got a Doberman puppy at 8 weeks. He is now almost 10 weeks. We live in Illinois and it’s cold outside. I am having trouble potty training because he does not want to go out at all even for treats. We have a coat for him. What can I do to get him to want to go out? It’s only been 2 weeks but he hates outside. Thanks.

My chihuahas are full time work, they poo and wee all over the house,I've had to ban them to the kitchen and my big back garden, I'm at my wits end, they no my command, the minute I turn my head it happens again,yet I can crate them all night and nothing. 😱
Crate them when you can't keep a close eye on them, and walk them every hour or so on a strict timer. Don't punish for accident but reward when they go successfully outside. Especially because Chihuahuas are small and their bladder isn't the biggest, they'll need to be going out frequently. Good luck!
I have a slightly different 'problem'. My cavalier king charles spaniel puppy (7 months) started to lift his leg to pee now when we go for walks, but unfortunately while he does that, he pees all over himself. His belly and front legs are full of pee and sometimes he even manages to pee his chin 😂. I wonder, is this a phase, since he's learning and it will pass or is this something I should somehow address and have to teach him?
I am about to pull my hair out lol.....has had my puppy 3 wks this Wed...she is almost 12 wks now. I follow your vids like it is a religion. I had her crate trained in 2 days following your vids. I have a kennel for her also...trained her to go in and to wait until I say ok when I open the door. I know she is very smart I taught her to sit, lay down and even shake paw all in about 20 min..she loves her treats. I know they can't hold their bladders at that age but I watch her like a hawk. I take her outside she pees twice and poops then comes in and eats with me standing there she takes one step back and pees again that fast. I mostly have the peeing problem, she has had very few of the other because I can pretty much know when she needs to do that but, I just can't seem to get a grip on her peeing all the time. I don't get mad at her but I am just frustrated at myself that I can't seem to find a way to stop all of these accidents.
Don't feed him too much food and you won't have that problem. The more puppies eat the more they potty. Feed him 3 time a breakfast, lunch and dinner. Take him outside after he get done eating.
Ours did the same in the beginning. Since this comment is 4 months old, it has probably resolved itself, but I wanted to add that the puppy probably didn't feel safe/comfortable enough outside. And when you come back inside, he still had to go really bad and couldn't hold it any longer, plus feeling more comfortable. (So staying out longer might or might not help.)
No luck on forums so I’ll try here I have tried and followed all your videos on potty training stay consistent daily always reward for going outside follow the same routine always use positive tone and words I work from home so never miss a beat stay extremely consistent we r 2 months in with zero success of him asking to go outside if he’s not in the crate he will go whenever he wants wherever he wants right in front us. He’s a 6 month old chihuahua any chance this is normal I see smaller dogs can take longer especially chi but I’m seeing so many comments says weeks or less and I’m like man what the heck :(
Hi there, LAZERLINE C! That can be frustrating. A couple of quick points. No need to reward your dog for going. The relief is reward enough. Simple praise will work. For smaller breed dogs you’ll need to be a little more proactive about taking them out. More frequent trips now will pay off later down the line. Don’t ever believe “your dog can be potty trained in X time”. It’s entirely dependent on the dog and potty training takes as long as it takes. Some dogs have accidents weeks into the process. You need to make decisions based on your dog’s current understanding. Accidents happen. And they’re actually an important part of the learning process. As long as you catch them in the act. Here’s a video that talks specifically about marking the error. It is going to be an important part of your training. He is not allowed to free roam into any room without us. He just chooses not to ask to go outside. It crazy how pretty obvious my puppy has been telling me he has to go this whole time. Now that I know his signs (lowered ears, sniffing in circles) it may as well be a neon sign in the shape of a toilet. If anything I had to be trained on understanding as well as potty and crate training the pup
I have a 4 month old GSD puppy. He used to use pee pads but now just rips them up. He just looks at me and pees or poops. He will not go on our balcony or outside he just goes nuts with sniffing and running around and doesn’t focus or really stay still. He will not go in his crate either. Any help would be appreciated! As my trainer seems like other stuff is more important then this

GOOD QUESTION! I am currently doing both and he will do both. Don't get me wrong, I'm still working on the odd accident here and there however..... what I can say is with my last pup, I was in an apartment and he came to me in the dead of winter and so we were exclusively pee pads and when spring time rolled around, he just did NOT at all associate outdoors, walks, parks, any kind of grass/pavement/dirt you name it! He never did and still NEVER has gone outside :O that may be an extreme case.... or I could be missing something, I realize it's usually on the owner haha but.. since I don't have the answer to your question, I thought you could take some comfort in this. I sure did hahaha!

I started with pads. But then I just watched the puppy. Everytime I saw her sniffing around on the floor, I scooped her up and brought her outside. As soon as she peed or pooped, I praised her and rewarded her with a treat. After a week, no more accidents.

@@meena.dwdn1 if you have carpets, get a special carpet cleaner for pet messes that kills the enzymes. Otherwise, your dog will continue to go on the carpet. I bought one called Bubba's commercial pet cleaner. It works great. Wash your carpet first with it, then closely watch her. As soon as she starts sniffing around, scoop her up and bring her outside. As soon as she pees, just call her by name and say, "Good girl!" And hand her a treat. Repeat when she poops. If she poops on the floor, pick it up and just bring it outside on the grass. She'll smell the poop on the grass and get a signal of where she is supposed to go. I have a fenced in yard, so she is now free to come in or out as she pleases.

The best piece of wisdom I’ve learned watching all these videos as a new puppy owner, is that if they have an accident, it’s my fault. The puppy is doing what it’s supposed to do. He’s a baby, he’s got a small bladder, he gotta go lol if he has an accident, it’s bc I either wasn’t watching close enough or I wasn’t fast enough. He’s doing great tho, thanks to all these tips I’m learning!

Nah my dog is broken I guess. She’s be playing and give absolutely zero signs and just squat out of nowhere. I catch her ever single time. Grab her and bring her outside. She never goes.
@@Swole_Cole_ Exactly, caught him in the act many times but if he's stopped while peeing, he just stops. Also, many time he knows where he's supposed to go and goes there to do his business, I give him treats and think "Yeah, he's trained!", but other times, he just runs out, sniffs for a while then comes back in and does it right in the room.
One thing I hate about the Internet is people bragging about having their puppy house trained in 2weeks.
It defeats everyone dealing with different environment and different pup personality/health/breed.
Today's been hard for me and my pup. I didn't get her to poop outside once today, she did it on the living room every time and just moments ago she ate her poop. I really need a house line. I feel like a terrible owner.

I have a small dog so I had just pee pad trained her. I watched her like a hawk so she was fully trained in just 3 days. I was impressed by how quickly she picked it up and learned. As far as crate training I used to put her in there with a treat and 3 years later I still praise her when she goes in so it's become a pleasant and rewarding experience for her.

Its all about consistency. The more work you put in the quicker and betterresults you get.. this nobody ljmes waking up several times in the middle of the night to make sure their dog does their business. But its necessary in order to train..
I'm puppy sitting/training my mom's puppy rn and she's so so good! I know her signals - she crouches down and rushes as if looking for a toilet and she whines at me when she needs to go. She goes almost as soon as I put her down. She's the best dog and the easiest to train so far.
My dog is better lol 😂 he’s a rescue dog and he’s a GSD lab mix.❤️ got him the day before yesterday.

The puppy I've had for six days now has only had one indoor accident, only a little and thankfully on the tile floor because he was overly excited. Took him out to finish. That was on the second day and is still his only accident so far. Hes catching the hang of it really well so far.

What if you don’t use a crate? I have a 4 month old, apparently she goes to the balcony earlier than I take her out to the spot where I want her to pee. Today I realized that when i come from upstairs she get really excited and after q little while she pees again. I figured that’s a new sign. Another thing I’m really struggling with is the biting and jumping on my kids.
My new puppy is really good with notifying us when he needs to go to pee he cry’s and goes to the door and he doesn’t use the pads

what I have started doing is put the dog right into the crate while I clean up so she has her 5 seconds to think of pottying in the house = kennel..Idk if it's gonna work but I get to spend alot of time with my dog and she get's alot of attention. she didn't have that in her previous house. I hope it makes a difference.😊 I'll let u know.
One year for Christmas, we put bells on the outside door. Our German Shepherd just started to ring it to go outside, she trained herself! Every time she has to go, she rings the bell. We are getting another puppy in about a month, we are gonna also train the baby to ring the bell, just like her older sis.

He is almost potty trained outside; however, the yard in the back yard (fenced area) is in such poor condition for a puppy that puts everything in his mouth (from sticks, limbs, large areas of grassless ground because of trees...and now ants. :( ) A large and nice piece of fesque turf grass was purchased and placed on the back deck. Do you believe it'll be easy to train him to go on the turf grass (which was the reason for the purchase)? And if so, do you have any tricks/ideas? - Thank you again so much in advance. :)

I have an adult dog (3 years old) who I rescued yesterday. Her whole life was spent inside, she never saw outside until recently. After a lot of treats and praise she is now happy outside (although sometimes she freezes up). The issue is, I believe her previous owner had her go to the bathroom inside her whole life, now when she is outside she holds it even if she needs to go, I’ve even spent 2 hours with her outside when I knew she had to go and she whined to go back inside to poo. :(
Going through the exact same thing, if mine goes outside he has to aim for landmarks like furniture to piddle on. After 4 months any results?

I got my Newfoundland pup 3 weeks ago and she’s going on 12 weeks old. Right now I’m struggling to get her from sitting under the chair in my room barking non stop. Other than that she is a good good dog.. just frustrating

The only issue I ever had with house training is that when I first got my puppy is was fall/winter, and the particular week that I got him it was very cold and rainy outside, so he didn’t want to go outside at all, and he was only 4 pounds so we didn’t want him to freeze or anything. He was so tiny even extra small dog coats or sweaters were too big on him. Once the weather became a bit nicer the next week, he learned to do his business outside extremely quickly. Being that he was tiny, he constantly got into things and under things, so someone had to be watching him at all times, so we would put him in a pack’n’play for short times(like 10 min max) when we had to do things. He didn’t like that. He would pee in the pack’n’play because he knew we had to take him out to clean it. We didn’t use the pack’n’play for very long lol. The only issue we have now is that he will pee or poop inside when he is mad at us. We will take away a toy he really likes because he has chewed it into pieces and we don’t want him swallowing them, and then he will pee because we took it away lmao.
Yes!!!! Finally someone else comments about the “defiant/manipulative/retaliatory peeing.” 😂 My chi does this and it’s so hilarious (and frustrating) to me that dogs are smart enough to figure stuff out like that. I tell my chi “you definitely are smart enough to know better,” so I take toys until she is accident-free for 3 days straight.
By far the best video on biting puppies and house training. I especially like the idea of keeping the leash on to control the biting . Great tips and ideas. I've seen so many vids but this one trurly is the best.

Same. LOL. EVERYTHING seems to be a distraction. I'm glad it's not just us. Don't get me wrong, he does great by peeing at least a little every time we go out, and we go out a lot. Over 15 times a day. But getting to his spot is a chore sometimes. Him trying to eat leaves, flowers, bugs, etc. are bad enough, but here in FL we have a gazillion little lizards everywhere and he wants to chase every one of them. 🤣🤣🤣

Got super lucky with my pup. From an early age he always preferred to go bathroom outdoors. Easiest training.. was super intimidated glad I got a good boy.
HELPPP!!! Accidentally trained my dog to only pee on the pee pads - I've tried taking her outside, but she'll legit wait until she's back inside to pee on them again :(
Maybe take a pad and put it in a certain spot outside??? It’s a lot of work but since she only pees on pads rn that could help introduce her to peeing outside and that it’s okay. And then after awhile maybe take away the pads and lead her to the same spot outside and see what she does. Just a suggestion :)
My grandmother's dog was the same way! We slowly moved the pad closer and closer to the door, and then moved it outside and that helped a ton.
I've heard moving the pad progressively towards the door, then put the pad outside the door, then remove it completely, so they will go outside. (Didn't try this myself, never used pads)

Using pee pad is not good idea. Your mistake is your teaching the puppy it ok to potty in the house. Pee pads are unsanitary the smell will get on the floor and it cause bacteria in the house.
My favorite supplement is not over watering. Give 2 times the amount of food in water. NO more. E.g. if they eat a cup of food, they get two cups of water.

I used your advice for potty training and it worked great. However, I have two questions and I’d love advice from the community. First, my puppy alerts me to go outside all the time now, even when he doesn’t have to go. What do I do? Second, now that he’s trained for outdoors how do I start training on the puppy pads indoors?
It could be that you have allowed mixed associations with going outside to potty, for instance going to potty and then have playtime outside immediately after. I saw a video where they said it's very important to keep trips outside using your potty keywords to only that purpose and then having outside playtime a completely seperate occasions /adventure for your puppy :)

After a month of working on potty training my corgi puppy I feel defeated. No matter what I do she’ll pee whenever she feels like it. Especially at night in her crate. Last night I took her out every hour or two and still when I got up there was pee in the crate . For a while she used to be pretty good about holding it. And now it’s just like she doesn’t care. She’s 3 months old. It’s a frustrating and I’m at a point where I can hardly sleep. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong :(. I’m trying to be a good dog mom but she doesn’t make any effort to work with me when she’s in the crate. She’s pretty much only in her crate from 11pm to 5am or so with a potty break at like 2am Now she’ll just sit and cry. Even though she’s been able to be pretty good through the night before. Now whenever she goes in the crate she’ll immediately start to cry. I just want to sleep. I’ve never ever had a dog be like this. And I know she’s just a baby. She’s just 3 months old. But I can’t watch and play with her constantly. I need time to do work or to relax. Im at my wits end.

Its important to take their water away 2 hours before bed… we have a 9 week old pyrennes puppy… because they are bred for cold snowy mountains and we live in Texas she drinks massive amounts of water … once I started taking the water away at bed time she hasn’t had any accidents… first thing i do in the morning is give her a big bowl of water outside and leave her outside for 30 minutes. But I hear you… sometimes it’s really frustrating!!!
I have the same problem with my Jack Russell.. I take him outside he goes, bring him in the house he goes in his crate with limited space it doesn’t work for me! I started to give him water once a day but I feel bad doing that I have been going through this for 2 years now I need help before I move or else I need to re home him

Literally googled "how to stop puppy from peeing inside" because I went to poop and my puppy followed me and as I was pooping she starred me in the eye and pooped next to the washing machine because she knew I couldn't do anything about it🤦♀️

My puppy is almost 5 months old, I got him four days ago and am working on potty training. He came already knowing the crate, a bit shy but is blossoming without the other dogs he was with. He came from a kennel in Mexico and hasn't had much human interaction and I am working on turning that around because he is a beautiful soul, he is really a great puppy. He has so far only had 2 accidents in the house. 1 because I didn't see if he needed to potty before bringing him inside my house the first day and 2 because I was trying to get my son dressed and didn't move fast enough when he decided he needed to potty. But so far he is doing rather well, perhaps it is due to his age but im not sure. We do have potty pads out where he peed (after cleaning it of course) just in case but he does whine when he's looking for a spot so I know and have learned his cues before he does his urgent whines.

My GR is trained...but carpet confuses him. Most of my house has hardwood floors, so when he feels the carpeted/area rugs underfoot, he decides it’s close enough. 🙄 Every other time he goes to the door, so he knows how to ask. It’s frustrating for both of us.

Be boring when you are outside, tell them to pee, keep the line short.
Let them go in their crate after going outside, to let them calm down a bit and then go outside again.

Thanks for these helpful videos. My puppy will be 10 weeks old tomorrow, so we've just been working on potty training since I brought her home, two weeks ago. Our weather (IL) just went from unseasonably warm to cold and windy, and I'm dreading that we may have some snow in a couple days. She was doing pretty good when it was nice outside, but has started running away from me when I pick her up for "outside" now because she hates the cold. I'm guessing there aren't any miraculous cures for this? I've put a pee pad area in my garage, thinking that maybe that can be a secondary "outside" for really bad days? I've taken her out there for practice and she's really just more curious about the garage than any interest in peeing there. I'm not sure if there is any advice you can give or if I'm just here to vent, LOL! But in any case, thanks!

I have a 9 week old puppy but so small I feel bad even making him wear a collar ;( . I am unable to take him out to the outside and grass until he has 4 months with shots I was told by his vet. I try to keep his wet pad near by so he “remembers” that the spot
I tried a collar on my pup first because he was so small he could get out of the new harness I got for him. Now I can use the harness on him tho so maybe try a harness if you don't like the collar being on your pup
It’s safe to take puppy’s out on the grass even if they haven’t had their shots- aslong as no other dogs have access to the area, or all dogs that do have access are well and vaccinated
I never vaxxed my puppies and dogs and went out. My dogs never got ill.

The pick them up part of the advice was funny. We have two four month old pups who are 35-40lbs now. They seem to have gotten the idea that outside is better, but they will tank up on the water and then Pee in the house. All the information says to offer them free access to water, but this just means free access to peeing. Maybe if we got a puppy union negotiator to compromise and give us a truce…

I take my puppy outside for two hours at a time, she won't go, she will wait to come in and go, it is maddening. I can't be with her 24/7, I just bought her a kennel, I am working on getting her comfortable with the kennel.
How the heck do you get them out immediately when you live with winter and have to put on boots, scarf, hat, coat, gloves?
If my puppy is in the crate and i am about to let them out i put everything on first, or just wear shoes in the house and have a coat readily available if they are out
All of that plus living in an apartment and having to use an elevator.. Its tricky for me. Working on the training now too, day 2 😂
I have mastered putting my hat on first or boots if needed, then picking up my puppy and putting my coat on while holding her. Even if I don't get it zipped, I can do that after she is outside. A bit uncomfortable for me but better than an accident. I also learned that she will not go when she has her coat on. Trial and error.

Thanks, really good information, let me know I have to be more strict with my routine, my challenge is my dog is deaf, we do the go outside thing every morning and several times throughout the day and he goes most times we take him out, the problem is how do I let him know when he has an accident that he did something we don't want him to do, he's a hit and runner so it's hard to catch him in the middle of the act so we have just been picking him up and taking him outside and don't feel like he knows why so we are just stuck with keeping him being tethered to us, wanting him to have the run of the house. Very true. I didn't pay close attention to my puppy one day and he went to the next door neighbour to score heroin. Over the next few months my pup would wait until I was at work to steal whatever valuables I had and sold it at the pawnbrokers to get more heroin. Now, some 8 years later my Bull Arab is smashing things around the house when I don't give him money and I am genuinely scared for my life.

Hello. I have been watching pretty much every video you guys have. They are very helpful. We just got a Doberman puppy at 8 weeks. He is now almost 10 weeks. We live in Illinois and it’s cold outside. I am having trouble potty training because he does not want to go out at all even for treats. We have a coat for him. What can I do to get him to want to go out? It’s only been 2 weeks but he hates outside. Thanks.

How do I know when my puppy, while in his crate, tells me he needs to pee? What are signals to look for when he is in his crate after I have put him in his crate for not peeing outside? LOL confusing to write. Great videos
dogs will try to never pee where they sleep. just take him out when he comes out.

My chihuahas are full time work, they poo and wee all over the house,I've had to ban them to the kitchen and my big back garden, I'm at my wits end, they no my command, the minute I turn my head it happens again,yet I can crate them all night and nothing. 😱
Crate them when you can't keep a close eye on them, and walk them every hour or so on a strict timer. Don't punish for accident but reward when they go successfully outside. Especially because Chihuahuas are small and their bladder isn't the biggest, they'll need to be going out frequently. Good luck!

I have a slightly different 'problem'. My cavalier king charles spaniel puppy (7 months) started to lift his leg to pee now when we go for walks, but unfortunately while he does that, he pees all over himself. His belly and front legs are full of pee and sometimes he even manages to pee his chin 😂. I wonder, is this a phase, since he's learning and it will pass or is this something I should somehow address and have to teach him?

I am about to pull my hair out lol.....has had my puppy 3 wks this Wed...she is almost 12 wks now. I follow your vids like it is a religion. I had her crate trained in 2 days following your vids. I have a kennel for her also...trained her to go in and to wait until I say ok when I open the door. I know she is very smart I taught her to sit, lay down and even shake paw all in about 20 min..she loves her treats. I know they can't hold their bladders at that age but I watch her like a hawk. I take her outside she pees twice and poops then comes in and eats with me standing there she takes one step back and pees again that fast. I mostly have the peeing problem, she has had very few of the other because I can pretty much know when she needs to do that but, I just can't seem to get a grip on her peeing all the time. I don't get mad at her but I am just frustrated at myself that I can't seem to find a way to stop all of these accidents.
My puppy peed on the floor so I take him outside for 30 mins. Goes inside and put him in the crate and he pooped inside the crate...
I think the puppy wasn’t done going, maybe try staying outside for a little bit longer?

Don't feed him too much food and you won't have that problem. The more puppies eat the more they potty. Feed him 3 time a breakfast, lunch and dinner. Take him outside after he get done eating.
Ours did the same in the beginning. Since this comment is 4 months old, it has probably resolved itself, but I wanted to add that the puppy probably didn't feel safe/comfortable enough outside. And when you come back inside, he still had to go really bad and couldn't hold it any longer, plus feeling more comfortable. (So staying out longer might or might not help.)

No luck on forums so I’ll try here I have tried and followed all your videos on potty training stay consistent daily always reward for going outside follow the same routine always use positive tone and words I work from home so never miss a beat stay extremely consistent we r 2 months in with zero success of him asking to go outside if he’s not in the crate he will go whenever he wants wherever he wants right in front us. He’s a 6 month old chihuahua any chance this is normal I see smaller dogs can take longer especially chi but I’m seeing so many comments says weeks or less and I’m like man what the heck :(
Hi there, LAZERLINE C! That can be frustrating. A couple of quick points.
No need to reward your dog for going. The relief is reward enough. Simple praise will work.
For smaller breed dogs you’ll need to be a little more proactive about taking them out. More frequent trips now will pay off later down the line.
Don’t ever believe “your dog can be potty trained in X time”. It’s entirely dependent on the dog and potty training takes as long as it takes. Some dogs have accidents weeks into the process. You need to make decisions based on your dog’s current understanding. Accidents happen. And they’re actually an important part of the learning process. As long as you catch them in the act. Most importantly, keep at it. It might not be easy, but you’re going to need to be a great “supervisor” when your puppy is out of their crate. You’ll get there!

He is not allowed to free roam into any room without us. He just chooses not to ask to go outside. Hello, been watching your video as i have a 8-9week old puppy coming. Just wondering should i keep the toilet training outdoor or in a located toilet? As during night time, we got to head down to level 1 for outdoor training. Or i can have 2 Alocated toilet for night time potty train?
It's best to be consistent. Pick one that works best and stick with it, otherwise the puppy will only be more confused.

It crazy how pretty obvious my puppy has been telling me he has to go this whole time. Now that I know his signs (lowered ears, sniffing in circles) it may as well be a neon sign in the shape of a toilet. If anything I had to be trained on understanding as well as potty and crate training the pup

I have a 4 month old GSD puppy. He used to use pee pads but now just rips them up. He just looks at me and pees or poops. He will not go on our balcony or outside he just goes nuts with sniffing and running around and doesn’t focus or really stay still. He will not go in his crate either. Any help would be appreciated! As my trainer seems like other stuff is more important then this

I feel bad when I don't make it home right away or on time and I want the puppy to have an option if I am making them hold it too long. What do you think? Thanks in advance Ken.
GOOD QUESTION! I am currently doing both and he will do both. Don't get me wrong, I'm still working on the odd accident here and there however..... what I can say is with my last pup, I was in an apartment and he came to me in the dead of winter and so we were exclusively pee pads and when spring time rolled around, he just did NOT at all associate outdoors, walks, parks, any kind of grass/pavement/dirt you name it! He never did and still NEVER has gone outside :O that may be an extreme case.... or I could be missing something, I realize it's usually on the owner haha but.. since I don't have the answer to your question, I thought you could take some comfort in this. I sure did hahaha!
