With good speakers, a good guitar, and more importantly a good guitarist, I think most amps can sound good. This 2205 had a brutal sound, maybe not quite like a plexi, but really good Marshall tones.
hahaha you are the marshall whisperer Johan! I've been thinking, could you do a comparison between your 1987x and your JMP 2204? I'd love to see how those two compare.
I loved mine, but I tended to favor the clean channel. I never thought of it as a thrash amp. My one's lead channel sounded more like scorpions in the mid-eighties. Loved it. Covered in pink natural faux snakeskin.
I own a 1989 2210, and all I did to it was upgrade the caps, and the output transformer. It’s what My amp tech calls a Clone Mod. I play with the Master Volume way down so I can get that Big, Wide open Plexi and JMP Super Lead tone. This amp can do vintage, but most people who buy this amp generally are going for hot rail thrash tone so they turn up The Master much higher, and might even use an overdrive pedal as well. To each His own.
Another great vid! Your videos always have something that pertains to my interests and my own gear. I have a 1989 2210 which I've had a love-hate relationship with since I acquired it about 7 years ago. My first mission was to find speakers that I liked with it. I ended up with Celestion G1265's that I feel have the tone characteristics to make the amp shine and it can really sound quite good bordering on great. Still, sometimes I really hate the amp. But this is usually after playing my '72 Super Lead thru a 1960BX cab for a long while. They are 2 amps that sound and feel quite different. The SL is looser and the 2210 it tighter...the SL has lots of midrange and 2210 is more scooped, etc. I've tried to make the 2210 sound like the SL, but it's difficult to do. The closest I've come is with the SL dialed in to getting the "cusp"-type sound and the 2210 set with the midrange and treble pretty high, the bass pretty low and the gain set well below 5 so the clipping diodes really aren't effecting the tone as much. One thing I will say is that the 2210 sounds a lot better at high volume levels than it does turned down. The Super Lead always sounds great.
Underated amp. As a single coil player, its usually the one I grab. I don't do pedals. Gain 10, mids 10. It offers a mid hump my others dont. My 2204 has a more organic distortion - but I want the mids. My JTM45 has great clarity and cleans. I'll run the 2205, either by itself, or sprinkle in one of the others in a 2 amp rig. I think SRV went through these at the Cotton Club. Yeah. He's better through the vibroverb.
I am interested in your thoughts on the Marshall SV20 “mini plexi”. Have you played one? I would love to hear your thoughts, maybe a comparison video with a vintage Super Lead??? Thanks!
JHS Angry Charlie (even made my 1967 Champ sound like a JCM 800!) or Pedal Pal FX - PAL 800 JCM Emulator, or maybe a Wampler Pinnacle. I just got the Wampler Plexi Drive, I love the way it makes the Fender Champ sound. I have a 1983 JCM 800, so I wanted the Plexi Drive to make my Champ sound Plexi-like. These amp-in-a-pedal things are really really good these days. Blew my mind.
Johan, i love your videos! Could you do you a video were you recreate mick mars tone from motleys debut album he used a early 70s jmp super lead boosted with a electro harmonix lpb1. Cabinet was vintage 30s or greenbacks i believe. On shout at the devil he used the same rig just with the aditon of a furman pq3. Please please please do a video on this!!!!
Never could get a decent sound out of those two channel JCM 800-s myself. Also, for that early thrash metal tone you should boost with an SD-1 or a tubescreamer, to bring back some of those scooped mids, ironically. And to cut the bass and make it tighter, of course.
@@removemental2873 I have several amps... The 2203/04s are limited gain-wise so you need a booster/Overdrive or fuzz (I Love Fuzz!) to Push it more if you want more gain... IMHO the JCM900s (MK3 & SL-X) are badass amps that are pretty much under the radar, also the 30th Anni 6100LM is also a beast of an amp and very often overlooked! Interesting.
I heard the later year models 2205 and 2210 were a difference circuit, yes? I had an earlier one, but I forget what year they came out. I sold mine at a music store in Austin many years ago.
Love ya Johan, but this is not good. Maybe it is the cab that isn’t matching well with the head? I had a 2210. Stellar amp that sounded great for every genre of music, except for perfect Roland clean tones. Watch Jeff Beck live videos and hear how great these split 800 could sound.
I agree. I had a 2205 for 12 years. They have diodes in the clipping signal, and they don’t seem to clean up well at lower volumes. The drive is always “edgy” on these. The earlier, all-tube JCM 800’s are smoother.
@@JohanSegeborn have you ever considered a comparison video between a 2204 and 2205? You could use your 4010 into the same cab as the 2205. I would love to hear that!

I tried several times to get these to sound good. Sometimes I thought I did until I A/B'd to an amp that actually did sound good. LoL. Seriously, the only time I think I heard one that I liked was Michael Shenkers.. & I'm pretty sure his had several mods. Edit: Johan's & Michaels. 😅
I don’t know about this model, but jcm800 type like the one you have below. You should be able to get pretty close by plugging into the low impedance Jack, turn master to 10, then use the gain knob like the loudness knob on a plexi
I have followed your channel for a long time now and I love what you are doing, Johan! But this 800 sounds awful! Anyway, who would want an 800 to sound like a Plexi? I can't understand this Plexi-hype to start with. Ok for rhythm but not enough gain for leads. But I admit that all sound is subjective.
I agree , plexis are good for rhythm and a good platform for pedals for lead , most players use some sort of gain pedals with plexis , I have a 2205 amp and it sounds pretty good has enough gain for leads and sounds much better micd through my PA , really brings it to life!
Very informative anybody can bang notes this isn't about the guitar this is about the amp you did not go over any of the settings you did not go over what the settings do you did no justice to that amplifier
Actually the DSLs TSLs MODE 4 JCM 900s all have far more gain than the 800 which is over-rated as a gain or thrash machine. The Slayer sound has to have something in front. Frankly, i think the 800 are not so great tone machines. This one sounds flat, thin and one dimensional.
I think the 2205 and 2210 are the only Marshall amps that handles fully scooped mids fairly well. Mesa is the benchmark when it comes to that tone though.
Love the start with Johan yelling out the settings. Like being in the artillery but firing heavy rock shells
An artillery of Marshall decibels!!
Hahaha! Very loud for a 50W actually. Those V30 are very efficient

Great way to start the day - like a double expresso with 2 extra shots. Perhaps a little over-saturated for a plexi?
Hahaha! ;-) yeah the saturation and compression isn’t plexi like. But when I rolled back the volume knob on the guitar it got a lot closer I think

It certainly doesn’t look the part
Great as usual. You really need to try out some Fryette/VHT amps like the Deliverance, CL and UtlraLead.

Those pedals that Driven Tone suggest will do a good job I think. But still it’s hard to get tones this mid scooped out of a plexi
It would be interesting to hear what it sounds like with KT88 tubes like the jmp el34/kt66 comparison you did a while ago

Agreed, EMG humbucker into an SD-1 into a JCM800 2203. Great thrash tone.
Yeah, something in front to tighten up is indeed necessary

Just use the "clean" gain channel...most plexis are clean anyway. Turn it up, and you will achieve the AC/DC style Plexi-crunch
