The modern amps have a more defined low end indeed. It seemed to have started with the dual rec but as with the dual rec, if you dial it in for midrange and sizzle up top they respond to that type of setup quite well. Just my opinion.

    • @PostalDude667

The JCM800 is the perfect distortion amp for me. Anything from punk to metal, it just works. The Greenbacks are a nice speaker to pair it with, but as you noticed the lack of low end, some folks like the G12-65's which bring back some of that low end, or the G12M-65's (Creambacks) for some more low end than a Greenback but with a little more high end than the G12-65's.

I had them in two 4x12 marshall cabs for more than a decade thinking that I had the best speakers and that nothing could sound better, but I always felt something .. Some understanding in the low frequencies ... Once I tried the greenbacks my world changed, the sound more compact, less compressed ... it is the ideal speaker for the british sound marshall

  • @CJReaper666

The lack of low end has more to do with the Greenbacks than the amplifier. Try that amp with some V30s or T-75s and you'll have a lot more bass to work with, personally I prefer the Greenbacks for their midrange crunch. Also that's just one model of JCM800, Kerry King used a single channel 2203 which is a completely different circuit than the 2205, "JCM800" was a series of amplifiers, not a single model. Nice video, the amp and cab combination sounds great, now I want a 2205 to go with my 2204, it never ends...

I also went thru a phase where I Had To try everything else-and I’m glad I did-in fact, I still enjoy plugging into different amps. BUT the minute I plug back into a Marshall, my ears can hearing it, my playing tightens up, then once I get that inevitable kick in chest, I feel like I’m home!! That's all we need🤘 awesome... since 1984 I play Marshall... Marshalls have caracter...and believe it or not, when a Marshall is on, it smells on his own way...that's great🤗 ....long time ago a drummer came in our Band room and he said: hey, I can smell that your band only uses Marshall...really no joke....sounds good and smells good😉

I've had the 100w 2210 for over 30 years, if you put a graphic eq in the loop it can sound as heavy as fuck, also loudest amp I've ever heard 🤘

The great thing about the Marshall tone is that it sounds great for Rhythm and Lead as well without changes the settings. Its chunky but full in the mids as well. Whereas with the dedicated chug machines your lead needs readjustment. I love the Mesa tone and its a killer rhythm tone but if you try to play leads with the same tone, you disappear into oblivion.

If the JCM800 is turned up really loud, and made even louder with a pedal, you might find that it's the Greenbacks that are unable to handle it. I was really disappointed to hear how Greenbacks sounded with my 2203. That amp seems to prefer the 65 watt Celestions.

Theres a reason why all of todays modern metal amps are modded versions of the JCM800.

Love this rig. My personal cabs have vintage 30’s, but it was cool hearing this rig with greenbacks tested playing da chugs. I’m sure these push a little more than my higher watt 30’s, just by wattage difference alone. I’m also glad you mentioned how you time align your mics. Is old school engineers gnash our teeth over projects that come to our desk that aren’t time aligned and then told why it’s not important to do so. Phase is important. You know this and I’m glad you passed this on to your viewers. Great vid as always. Love your stuff, Ola. Metal.🤘🏻

The thing is Marshalls are generally bright cutting amps. Problem is today many guys do not play live do in their bedroom or wherever the tone is unforgiving. Same with a Blackface Fender Twin. Once you play in a band and walk away ten feet then it sounds AWESOME!! Cuts through the frequencies of bass guitar, drums, vocals room slap back etc. If one was to listen to isolated classic tracks you would not like the tone usually.
