It’s funny how people ask about your gun , paint , make of clears , and all the tools you use , they never talk about the professional years of learning how to spray paint so it’s not an easy trade no matter what materials , who makes them , what gun you use , it’s experence and lots of it , well done keep going
I've been painting cars, yachts, signs and aircraft over 35 years. And just had to say, it's nice to see someone admit that sometimes,,,we do bump into our finish during the spray process! Well done!
Enjoying the free training. Thank you very much. I have a 85 mustang I want to fix dents and paint myself and stumbling onto your channel gives me the training and confidence I need. That 3M gun system looks to be the one for me, at least for starting out. I've been a diesel tech for 25 years so I know how to make them run good, just always wanted to make them look good to as a do it myselfer.
I live in Sedona, Arizona. I have been asked to create a street-side mailbox using an old fire hydrant for our Fire Chief. I am not an expert. I am merely a watercolor artist, thus folks think I can do anything....LOL. I found it interesting to watch the restoration of the hydrant unfold. Great job!
Thanks man, the haters let me know my video is becoming popular so I don't give it a second thought, I usually laugh as I read them and proudly show them to anyone who is around lol. Ya bring er by
I think your video on the sinergy green camero was very well done. You took your time and explained what was going on instead of just cutting it short and saying spray silver then green then clear. VERY GOOD JOB !
hey jimmo4life - just to let you know i have no clue how to paint a car but i still subscrbed and watch your videos because theres something very therapeutic about painting a car... everything new and clean, cheers
My sister had a 68 about the same color in 1969, 327-3 in the floor, I taught her how to drive a manual trans. If I can find the photo I will put it on here. Great job painting!
part of been a good painter is to fix any flaws that happens while painting, you know it happens all the time, and I had my share. You did a nice paint job I enjoyed your tape.
Silver is one of the hardest colors to spray cause any striping or mistakes will show easily, and then the candy does not hide anything and is even harder to spray. I have seen many cars rolling down the street with bad candy paint jobs you make it look easy good job.
Thats in reference to how your applying one application or coat of clear. If your using to fast of a hardener then the clear drys to quick, it needs to stay as wet as possible during the application of each coat. 2 coats are applied with about 10 minutes between them.
Devon blue. I bet his compressor is 80 gal or more. That's a pro set up. He has all the water collection and dryers. Key to a great paint job is prep and making sure you have ideal spray conditions. Knowing your product helps don't buy cheap!
As far as I am concerned you are a master craftsman your work is beautiful. I love the choice of color. Great explanation on video. Keep up the good work. Would li
I WATCHED YOU THE WHOLE VIDEO, I painted over a hundred cars, and I never start anywhere except the top first, and walking the full length of the automobile on candies and other hard to shoot hues,it seems that the gun you are using is saving your butt, your overlap is excellent,i've found on hard to shoot paints that more light coats for the first two applys works best when the mix is perfect, you did a good job, start walking the full length and you will master paint work right off the gun and cuts down on orange peel and lots of sanding good luck
Awesome job Jimmo, man I don't know about you or others, but when you start to spray that first coat of clear and you begin to see the shine come thru, that excites the hell out of me. I was like "Ah shit!, Whoooohooo!" lol would love to see the car when completely finished. 2 Thumbs up.
One cup that size will get you about half the car (one coat), depending on coverage you may need 3 coats or so. About 1/2 to 1 gallon will usually be what you need to do a complete. Depends on the size, color, complexity (if your burning paint in offsets - grilles and such), if your painting the jambs, bumpers..etc.
Thanks, ya I just explained to someone else I intended it for my subscribers which I assumed had seen a few of my other videos and would know what I was talking about by this point. In my more recent vids I try and break it down a bit further.
That's exactly what they were, fisheyes. I actually just had never seen a fisheye before so I didn't know what it was! Got a dedicated air line now, as well as water separators. Thanks man
Well done! I have been vacillating about the color to paint my '69 Chevelle SS 396. It has a green paint code Fathom Green 57 (as I recall the number). I now think I will go with a candy green. I might make it as light as the Frost Green factory color, almost the color of your first candy coat, Or, maybe go dark with it. It won't be the factory color, but it will be a green and I guess that's close enough for me. Your quality paint job made the decision easy for me! I am subscribing! Thanks!
nice job.. just finished a monte ss on Memorial Day, has been 7 years since I have touched a paint gun due to an infection in my foot just after graduating from Custom Auto Body school, but, have been reinspired to take these painkillers and get back on my feet.. I had to paint it outside with an annoying know it all friend who is 15 years my senior and has only painted with the 1 stage and cant understand the point of base clear..
Awsome work man hope you do some video a begining about how to paint a car from first step from primer to last clear coat what kind of sand paper to use etc thanks again for uploading this video
enjoyed seeing the spraying technique, and your explaining gun and spray tips. helpful prep is always most important and time consuming wondering who dose your Upholstery work. hope too see segment on that, always under rated. LOL just saying from my perspective Queen Christine’s Custom Upholstery ;) Thanx for video cheers
Lovely job ,can I give you 2 tips? the air hose always hold it behind your back and come up on your shoulder ,cause you can touch the paintwork if you keep it in front while you spraying ,2nd tip you get less dust if you spray at less psi,try ,I spray lots of cars with low pressure without a single speck of dust or flies
It was sanded and recleared, yes it was either 1000 or 1500. Anything over 800 should work fine for a reclear...I've heard of some people using 600 even.
Real professional job!!! I've got 15 years production experience over 10,000 collision repair job under my belt.My only question I have is why only two coats of clear?
Good job bro.Don't let the negative comments bother you.People have been tellin, me HOW to do it for over 25yrs. Hand them a paint gun,and you find out how much they REALLY know.
Try getting down on one knee on every pass and turn the gun upside down to get under the rocker panels where rust can get it's start. Turning your gun side ways doesn't do anything to get direct 90 degree contact with the underside of the panel. You paid all that money for good equipment so use it for it's intended purposes. One can notice also when you do spray along the rocker panel especially with your side ways pass move, that the over spray goes under the car and rolls up the other side of the vehicle and crawls up the side to the roof bringing any dust particles with it. This can be eliminated by masking from the inner rocker panel lip to the floor which is something many seasoned painters do to eliminate the chance of dust particles being picked up and deposited on the car through static electricity. Going around all the taped paper edges first with a light coat also traps any dust particles that may be sitting there even from the factory roll. Two air lines, one on each side of the vehicle goes a long way to keep things clear and allows you to move freely along side the vehicle as well and reduces the chances of stirring up dust from swinging the hoses around along the floor. Starting from the bottom up allows you to see the pattern much better than from the top down because when you do top down you can only realistically see what you've already sprayed and not how the pattern is being sprayed so you can adjust accordingly.
@@jeffreyalbrittain If you do that with candy you have a high risk of the shade not being right from panel to panel when you but the car back together.

It depends on temperature and the clear/hardener your using. Its generally between 5-15 minutes between coats & 2 Coats total, sometimes in custom people will apply 3.
Nice job and awesome color. While watching you spray the base colors I was wondering why you didn't start at the top of the car so if your suit accidentally brushed against the side it wouldn't rub against wet paint. But I'm here to learn. Again, it looks great!!
Onyx is a very good paint system, it be very hard to do this paint job with solvent paint, especially by spraying each panel and not going full length of the car. Great job.
Hey man I've been doing spot repair for a while now but I'm getting ready to do a full job on my mustang. The way you laid down your clear was awesome. I mean it was shinning as the first coat went down. I've got a few questions if you get a second maybe you wouldn't mind answering for me. Great video
You know, im no pro, But My dad is, and to everyone bashing this guy on his technique jus stop, bc i wanna see u guys paint that car and it look that good, That is by far a very difficult paint job to pull off, The color is very light. So get off this guys sack, and shut up and learn. Car looks great dude!!! I know i learned a few things. Thanks for the video.
In some paint lines it will come up as a tri-coat, some will have a comparible 2 stage. I don't know how it comes from factory but with BASF it needed a silver basecoat applied first to achieve the effect.
great job, I'm painting my 69f100 the same color. After I install my cam and rest of engine work. hood will be flat black with blower scoop being green.
The paint looks well done, but if I could offer some advice from one painter to another. I start at the back, do the trunk-lid & back panel, then left and right quarter, then I start at the centre of the roof panel, continue down the door, repeat on the other side, then I start at the centre of the hood and down the fender etc. I do alot of running from one side of the car to the other, but I find I can keep the best wet edge possible. As well, I'm not risking leaning into any wet paint. Cheers
Panel painting a 3 stage is really risky especially if it’s a pure candy topcoat. It took a good year for me to transition from a production painter to a complete restoration painter. Walking the line takes a lot of discipline but the outcome is worth it. Good job though paint looks very professional.
Looks good, painted my 78 Ford Granada the same color, just over primer and not silver, looks the same, maybe not as much sparkle, can't tell in a video though, and I didn't spray the whole side at once either, I sectioned it by the door breaks, and you cant tell it, looks good man.
Base/clear systems are designed to be applied at the same time. There's no need to let the base dry. It just needs to set up (20 min or so before clearing). If you get dirt, bugs, etc. in the base, you'll let it dry before sanding out/respraying the base, but it depends on the job. I sprayed thousands of cars in a booth like his. Some days I'd spray ten parts without so much as a big dirt nib, then the next job I'd have a swarm of little flies stuck in the basecoat of a white hood!
I've been spraying candies for 36 years and I used to walk the length of the car too. But through the years I found out you don't have to do that. If you'll notice at around 08:53 he really feathered his candy out as he put it on. As you move down the car you have to feather back in to what you just sprayed on. If you do this you wont see the stopping point. That is why it worked. You can do this with pearls too.
Dear Friend.. Seeing hows I've only been in the booth 35 yrs .. I can tell you with 100% certainty THAT I Start all my paint work in the center of the roof working out so I don't have to reach over wet doors .. then Drop down to the deck lid then hood then sides .. But I don't reach over wet work ever if I can help it and when I start up top I don't have to worry about all that over spray on newly painted hoods and deck lids .. Just a tip from an old Guy ..
Nice video & very informative. I have a 67 Chevelle that is hundreds of hours from this point but it helps to see & be explained the process for a nice finish. I agree with you completely on how funny it is to see people get so angry over you tube videos. Funny thing is they talk very tough on their comments & couldnt even look you eye to eye if that day ever came to meet. Lol. I call them Utube gangsters
Unless you based the car a long time ago & the base is 100% dry, the clear will adhere every time to the base, no need to sand. The reducers in the clear re-wet the base & they sort of melt together. The only time you'ld sand the base prior to clear is if it has imperfections in the base. If you sand a metallic/pearl base, you'll have to reshoot/blend the base to cover your scuff marks.
I've been a body, painter, for 35 plus year's,, and my hats off to you! very nice work,,, 💯👍👌

Don't you love the smell, If you haven't painted for awhile, then you get around it again, great video
