I'm one of the biggest guitar pedal haters out there and even I don't understand the hate for Tube Screamers. You can get a good guitar tone, turn on a Tube Screamer and still have a good guitar tone which is more than you can say for a lot of other pedals.
From Leo; I have been using a tubescreamer into a twin since the 1980's. I find it pretty easy to adjust it for good tones. People that dime every knob are probably not happy with them. It takes a little time to learn. You have a knack for getting great tones from gear. I have heard you get great tones from a VOX AC. I never spent enough time to learn that amp, but it shows that learning the controls is almost as important as learning the riffs. Good job!
I mean a TS boost mids and tightens low, which is exactly what Black Face Fenders such as the Deluxe Reverb he plays through needs. If you play through an amp with plenty of mids and a tighter bass, you might want something else from your overdrive.
You got it exactly right, dear Jack! Tubescreamers are particularly useful in a loud band situation, where bass frequencies of your rig or combo might get overwhelming and you as well want to cut trough the wall of sound, that the other band collegues produce. Ideally your basic tone for it should be already well above edge of breakup. The fine-grained dirt of the Screamer then will blend - even melt - just fine with it! Of course it also enhances sustain for soloing.Three problems solved with only one pedal!
Have had an 808 on my board for YEARS. Multiple amps, sounds great with all my guitars (SC and HB). It does what it’s meant to do. The trick is this (1) mid hump is your friend, especially live and (2) many players overestimate how much distortion is needed for great fat drive tones.
I love my TS9. Playing thru it right now watching the vid. Plus everyone knows the worst pedal is the Boss DS1 … just kidding, I love that one too lol.
Rhett’s reason for hating them is odd. He uses a mid-heavy rig so if he taps a mid boosted OD it sounds terrible. TS’s were made for mid scooped base tones
@@gunkanjima3408 Not that odd, TS sound like crap in front of a non master volume Marshall.. TS i guess are fine if you use a twin or deluxe that has no mids to begin with
As a pro player for 40 years, i can play every gig with just a guitar, amp, cable, and a tube screamer. From Swing to rock, to funk, to top 40, at least i feeded my family well with this strategy!
Tube Screamers are awesome, I used one in the '80s before I got a RAT and I still have it. I never knew there were Tube Screamer haters out there, I think of it as a water colour and my RAT as an oil painting.
I like both. Rat has its unique sound and so does the TS. I also collected a vintage Fuzz Face and Muff Pi, along with modern versions of those. Boss blues breaker and combo something (?) I like them all for different reasons.
"Getting some overdrive with character and matching it with the right amp". Bingo. TS+Fender BF amps. And I agree with others that have already stated that some people think hating on the most popular OD pedal makes them look cool in some way. It doesn't. I don't even use it that much anymore, but that's because my style changed. I will always think of it as an awesome pedal. I also noticed that most people focus on its EQ (mid-hump). But the _actual_ texture of overdrive of a TS is hardly talked about. It still remains magical to me. It's got this beautiful glassy and smooth sound with singlecoils.
Got a used TS9 recently and love it. My first pedal ever was an Arion Tubulator, which was a clone so...I guess I've been on the TS thing since early on (for me!)
I have both a ts and a Boss SD1. When all is said and done I find the ts simply has no bite. That bite guarantees definition on the attack of the note. The ts has a mushy attack as it doesn't have the grit that an asymmetrical clipping diode gives it. That said I find that the Zendrive does the same job but sounds less synthetic than either. Apparently Robben Ford still finds it true. His fly rig for a just completed UK tour consisted of a Zendrive and a guitar. Love your show. THANX as always.
As a beginner i got a tube screamer. I eventually saw it as kinda basic so i sold it and played a Timmy, morning glory, Emerson Em Drive, archer, fulldrive. But recently i grew the itch for it and I rebought and i was so happy to be reunited as an adult. It’s just sensational
I’ve noticed that switching guitars, and/or switching amps, can make a pedal sound or behave a lot differently. I think a lot of people don’t give equipment enough time; maybe they expect a pedal to be some magic box with no bad tones, or the gain should be maxed, etc I have never played a regular tube screamer. I bought a fulltone fulldrive a long time ago, found out later that it’s based on the TS, and then decided I probably don’t need one. I absolutely love my Fulldrive; it’s almost always on
Informative, and fun! Great tones and playing! Looks like the cable or input of the TS9 may be a little bent (?) I have an early 80s TS9...depending on the rig, it's either gold, or just okay. Mostly gold, well...green, actually.
I don’t know what most people think, but when I think overdrive, I immediately think the tube screamer. It’s that sound, it can’t be beat. Most people say they don’t like the tubescreamer, it’s usually because they’re trying to get views on their UA-cam channels.
I think the issue is by themselves yes they can have what people describe as a nasally sound, but if you are playing with a band that mid forward sound gets your guitar out front in the mix. The TS was designed this way. The engineers wanted to develop a box that would cut through with nice sustain without players having to crank up their Marshalls or whatever. Noodlers only care about the sound a pedal gets on it's own, then back into the case after 20 minutes of playing the same lick they have been "perfecting" for the last 10 years,
every other guitarist has bought at least one. A lot of the time it doesn't apply, either to their amp, their style but mostly to the level we get to actually play at.
I like screamers. Admittedly I only use to boost. But they’re one of the classics. At one time it was a must but since people have gone Boutique crazy. It’s not cool unless your pedal costs over 300 nowadays with the tone nerds
I certainly don’t hate it. Owned it and had it on my board for 2 years. I changed it for drives with more neutral EQ profile. The drive character itself is nice, but for me it seems to darken overall tonality more than I liked. Great artists have made nice work with theirs obviously.
Every 10 years or so that fashion returns. Oh well... 🤷🏼♂️ And it's true that they suck in a bedroom kind of situation, but on stage it makes the guitar cut through like nothing else.
I don’t hate the Tube Screamer, but I do think they’re overpriced, especially the 808 reissue. I think anything the TS can do, the Boss SD-1 can do it just as well or better, so with how cheap the SD-1 continues to be, I find the TS to be a bit obsolete these days. Why pay $100 or $200 for something when $60 will get you the same thing and be built better?
We need a definitive guide. Almost like a spreadsheet or flow chart of tone. The 'sounds like' videos by Andertons are quite good but we need a way to analyse systematically. What would the early Eagles have used? In the Uk John Mayall & bluesbreakers. And then all the way up through the 80's with Vai and Van halen into the 90's of Indie, heavier country, then and metal.
I love the tube screamer! It spawned many many great drive pedals that are both better and worse than the original! But let’s address a couple things that are more important than that; 1) Transparent overdrive doesn’t exist! Overdrive in and of itself is not transparent! Stop it! 2) and the most important thing that needs addressed: Top loader tele, or through the body?!?! I’ll leave that there!
Didn’t realize there was hate for the TS. Does need to be paired with the right amp though- it adds a lot of mids to my ear, so blackface Fenders ideal, Marshall and vox maybe less so. The TS didn’t work well with my Ghia for what it’s worth.
I just haven't been able to make it work on my rig, at least not at a lower volume. But my rig is already fairly mid heavy... Tele or Gretsch into a Tweed-ish or Voxy sound. I tend to prefer dumble style overdrives or something more full range. The "best" TS style pedal I've tried is the string singer side of the Kingtone Duellist though. I actually liked that one pretty well, but still prefer dumble style overall.
Classic way to use a tube screamer turn your amp up really loud. Turn the gain low or off the pedal and crank the volume to blow your amp over the top. I think Tube screamer by itself is not that good of a distortion sound. That’s my opinion . Good video ,good .work
Here’s my take. As a pedal to click on when you take a lead, it’s a fantastic sound. But if you’re one of those people who likes to leave a pedal on all the time and roll your guitar volume up and down, it sounds pretty horrible compared to a “transparent” overdrive or a good preamp pedal. Plug in to a good, rich sounding full frequency amp and do an A/B back and forth switching a tube screamer on and off while playing chords or rhythm parts - in that context, the tube screamer tone sounds two dimensional and flat compared to the full frequency tone of a good amp. So, while it certainly has its uses, in some situations, it can sound quite horrible. But to be fair, it’s the same with most famous and revered pedals. A Fuzz Face into a clean, mid scooped amp is a pretty wretched sound as well. Personally, I’ve found compromise with a Way Huge Green Rhino, which is a Tube Screamer circuit with an active bass boost/cut control and an upper mids control. As far as I’m concerned, all shortcomings of certain pedals could be overcome by simple adding more parameter controls. A bass control on a TS; a Fuzz Face with a post fuzz overdrive circuit built in. I know that for whatever reason, guitarists seem to love having 50 overly simple, one-sound pedals, but I’d rather have a just a few that each have total control over all the parameters of their particular effect. But as a band aid solution for TS haters, I’ll just suggest this: put an EQ pedal after it. A couple of EQ pedals and maybe a compression pedal or two in your signal chain and you can expand your tonal pallet immensely, with a minimum of other pedals.
I get the inconsistency bit. I think you can buy identical models from different years and they vary. I’ve had 4. My favourite ( which I sold and bought again ) is the Maxon OD808. Next comes the TS9, but somehow I didn’t like the TS808 or the TS10 at all.
They sound good with single coils and fender amps because they fill in the missing midrange frequencies. You shouldn't use a lot of gain if you use humbuckers.
I think what happens is when you watch a video of someone who hates the tube screamer then the algorithm will give you videos that are similar, because I think I've only seen one video of someone that hated it.
It can be a bit too mid forward depending on your rig and playing style. Some people don't like that the dry signal is always there. I'm sure there are other reasons, but those are the complaints I see the most.
Because everyone thinks new is better and the new pedal makers are more then happy to tell you that. You could always spend $10,000 + for the legendary, mythical, greatest of all time OD pedal. My belief is that you should learn how to play first. Keep it simple. We are not all as good as Jack.
I always have a tube screamer in some form on my board. Works with my Vox, my Fender, and my Friedman. Not all overdrive and work with amps like this, such as a Boss SD1. He or she that has the most overdrives wins. Just saying!
I don’t hate it but I’m not a fan. The one I bought had grounding issues and wasn’t very good at all. Instead, I use the boss super od, which the tube screamer was designed after( so I heard). The super od is perfect for me
I hear the opposite, that they revolutionized the pedal market, that they are the best. What annoys me is that everyone forgets the real original, the OD-1 by BOSS, which I think is the real king.
No hate but I find that there are *relatively* few windows where the tube screamer shines, and in all the other situations it sounds like putting a wet blanket over your speakers- *especially* when using humbuckers SD-1 is pretty versatile in comparison even though they say it’s strongly related.
I do not know a single guitarist, who hates the TS, all serious guitar players love that thing, dont wory about the others and complainers, They will always keep complaining!
The guitar community is fickle. 15 years ago every pedal builder in the world was copying the TS because it was so loved. 15 years ago you couldn't give away a Boss pedal or a Telecaster. People hated on the JCM 900 for 30 years(because they never played one). Most of the hate comes from people just running their mouths with no experience.
They are still selling and in more or less every store I go to. And in case you dislike something do not hate it but just ignore and save you energy for making peanut butter sandwiches.
If you will look at the schematic of the 808 and the 9, you’ll will see they’re the same pedal. You don’t have to know how to read a schematic to compare them.
To boost amp distortion and tighten up the bass response. Drive on zero, volume on ten into an already cranking jcm 800 IS metal. It's also way outside of the intended use of this pedal. It's just a fluke that it works that way. Doesn't really count for this argument.
You got Rhett shull and Tom Bukovac who don't like it! A lot of people don't like the fact that tge circuit actually lets the clean signal blend or bleed in so you almost have a stereo thing going on in the tube screamer! I happen to like it, but real amp distortion is the real deal... the zen drive is unbelievable

One of the best pedals you can own and a great help with mids for Big Muffs also.
Who the hell hates Tube Screamers.. its the best pedal in the world
« the best pedal in the world » …. for you*
People trying to get views on their UA-cam channels
I mean… 😳
I found the title confusing as a newbie to the hobby. I’ve been recommended this constantly looking for my first overdrive pedal.
Plenty of people don't like it..not me, I love it..but other people

I’ve got 3 pedals. One is the TS9. If it’s good enough for Sean Mann, it’s good enough for me.
Good video! Thanks for putting it together.

Dude. Always so good. Sublime tones.
When I was a kid I used one as a boost for solos into a Marshall 900 in the 90’s. Worked great 🎛

Anyone that hates the tube screamer evidently never plugged one into an old silver face bandmaster.
Tubescreamers are just not for me, never will be. In my opinion they make your guitar sound metallic and spiky, and I prefer warmer, rounder tone.
But since watching the video, you at least don’t hate it, right?!? 😃

To me, the bd2, especially a modded one or waza, does everything a tube screamer does but better. And it does more.
Had an 808 for years and never used it. I think I was after something more amp like. I appreciate them more now but prefer a Chellee Odie.
The TS setting on my Baatsin is as close as ill ever spendnthe money on, but i use that more often than most of the 8drives pnnthat pedal
Because everyone thinks new is better and the new pedal makers are more then happy to tell you that. You could always spend $10,000 + for the legendary, mythical, greatest of all time OD pedal. My belief is that you should learn how to play first. Keep it simple. We are not all as good as Jack.
Own two TS but don't use them, I prefer klon instead. I really liked TS9DX when I had it. produced round warm tone.
I always have a tube screamer in some form on my board. Works with my Vox, my Fender, and my Friedman. Not all overdrive and work with amps like this, such as a Boss SD1. He or she that has the most overdrives wins. Just saying!
Using blues driver but would like to give a try
I don’t hate it but I’m not a fan. The one I bought had grounding issues and wasn’t very good at all. Instead, I use the boss super od, which the tube screamer was designed after( so I heard). The super od is perfect for me
I hear the opposite, that they revolutionized the pedal market, that they are the best. What annoys me is that everyone forgets the real original, the OD-1 by BOSS, which I think is the real king.
I used to love my TS9. I bought a Klon Clone and now I feel like the TS9 is way too muddy. I dont enjoy it like I used to.
agreed. Your post sums up my own experience. I also run a Klon style unit instead now.
No hate but I find that there are *relatively* few windows where the tube screamer shines, and in all the other situations it sounds like putting a wet blanket over your speakers- *especially* when using humbuckers
SD-1 is pretty versatile in comparison even though they say it’s strongly related.
I'm not sure how you are managing to do that.. the tube screamer is pretty much the opposite of the wet blanket thing.
i bought a clone 808 flip the switch ts9, $35.00 i run a clone clone " aluminum falcon "in front with a dd3. pretty simple rig.
SRV used one.... there job done
I do not know a single guitarist, who hates the TS, all serious guitar players love that thing, dont wory about the others and complainers, They will always keep complaining!
0:32 you forgot Voldemort but you are right
Ha!
It can sound fine. Especially that Bassman! The Strat into the Marshall sounds like a kazoo-sorry, just what I hear…
Stevie Ray Vaughan would probably disagree with any hate this pedal gets.
The guitar community is fickle. 15 years ago every pedal builder in the world was copying the TS because it was so loved. 15 years ago you couldn't give away a Boss pedal or a Telecaster. First comment! I’ve been looking at the Ibanez TSA15 amp on FB marketplace recently then this pops up in my feed!
Theres one guy who “hates” them. Rhett isnt my style anyway. Most people I know use them
If you will look at the schematic of the 808 and the 9, you’ll will see they’re the same pedal. You don’t have to know how to read a schematic to compare them.
lol. Then explain why so many guys in the metal side of things use them 🤷♂️
To boost amp distortion and tighten up the bass response. Drive on zero, volume on ten into an already cranking jcm 800 IS metal. It's also way outside of the intended use of this pedal. It's just a fluke that it works that way. Doesn't really count for this argument.
@@JasonT-xp3kh oh. Well then carry on. 😊
It’s not transparent.
No one hates the TS
Because there are enough videos on the tube screamer that's why
Hate?
It is the most popular, most copied overdrive pedal in history.
I’m not a fan
You got Rhett shull and Tom Bukovac who don't like it! A lot of people don't like the fact that tge circuit actually lets the clean signal blend or bleed in so you almost have a stereo thing going on in the tube screamer! I happen to like it, but real amp distortion is the real deal... the zen drive is unbelievable
