My dad became friends with Bill Harrah in the early 1940's over a shared passion for cars back when as my dad put it "We were both poor". Dad went on to be an airline pilot, race track owner and car collector with a pretty impressive collection for just a regular guy (including some I am sure that Jay would envy) but that was nothing compared to what Bill Harrah collected. I met him just once at 15 when the Franklin "Westtrek" was held in Reno and he opened up his collection to the club and even went as far as loaning out a dozen of his Franklins to members that had flown in. While I can't say he always attended shows back then he did when the Westtrek was on which was when I was introduced to him. While most of my dad's collection is long gone I still have the Franklin and hope to get it back on the road someday so I can attend at least one more Franklin Trek!

In 1975 I sold a 1957 Lincoln Capri 2dr ht, yellow body, black top, two tone green cloth interior to a friend in Larkspur, California. He drove it to Harrah's Casino. A representative of Harrah's approached him and said Bill was interested in purchasing the Lincoln. Bill purchased it for his collection. About 1992 I took my son to see the car collection hoping to show him the Lincoln that I once owned. Sadly a lot of the cars that had been in the collection in the 1970s were gone and my Lincoln was gone too. But we did see this Jeep Ferrari and it's amazing!! It's great to see it again!!

My family spent an entire day at Bill Harrah's Auto Museum in the early 1970s. One of my favorite memories of my youth. Bill's collection included a locomotive, planes, and unusual musical instruments. I was so impressed. I'm going to put this smaller collection museum of his cars on my short list of "must see" visits for this year. Thanks so much for this video. A great testament to what an extraordinary person Bill was. And Mr. Leno, thank you for this channel and all the laughs. Applause applause applause.

Love your shows, this one made me think back to the early 70's. I was a young banker in Seattle and Harrah's was a client. We financed his jets. One day the bank sent me down to Reno to check on our collateral. I arrived and the hotel picked me up in one of Harrah's Rolls Royce limos. We drove to the hotel, but first stopped at Harrrah's lake compound, to see the lake homes and some of his antiques boats which included the cabin cruiser with twin Alison engines in it. As we were touring Bill Cosby walked out of one of the houses and stopped to say hello. It was quite a trip for a younger banker at the time, I did my review, stayed in the hotel and returned to Seattle to file my report. Thanks for this video and my travel back in time,

Back in early 1974 my mom and dad took me with them to the newly opened Harrah's Hotel in Lake Tahoe.
We traveled in style because my parents had just bought a new 1974 Chevy 1/2 ton Cheyenne Super pickup.
I was 12 years old at the time, and we lived out in the country in a very small town in Oregon.
Where we lived, most of the roads were still gravel...
When we got to the Hotel, I couldn't believe how cool it was. We stayed on the top floor and had an incredible view
of Lake Tahoe. It's funny that you mentioned that each room had two bathrooms, because I remember wondering
    why there were two LOL...
But what was really cool was that each bathroom had a t.v in it, and a phone hanging on the cabinet next to the toilet,
and out in the room they had an electronic bar. The machine had pictures of all kinds of drinks, mostly alcoholic, on the front of it,
and all you had to do was push the button and you got your adult beverage, or in my case a soda...
Of course on our way back home, we stopped and went through the Harrah's car museum because my Dad
had always loved cars, and I lived and breathed cars and motorcycles. It was very cool...

I saw this Jeep-Ferrari in person at the Harrah's Car Museum in Reno back in 1983. I was 15 years old and vacationing there for a couple of days with my family. Mom took my sisters shopping that day and my dad took me to Harrah's car museum for the day. It was great. It was warehouse after warehouse of cars. They also had on display John Wayne's 53 Corvette and Marilyn Monroe's 56 or 57 T-bird. Thank you, Jay, for showing this blast from the past. Cheers.

I was an AC Casino house driver for Harrah’s back in the day. Highly structured corporation.
Never knew the founder was a car guy. The company seems to reflect his idea of overboard service.
This is the reason that Harrah’s is the largest publicly traded gaming company in the world. At least it was back then.
Jay I saw you at Caesars in the 80s. The 80s were a blur back then because AC was New Year’s Eve every night. Had a good time that night.
You are the foremost authority on most kinds of conveyance. I heed your advice which I get from your various conversations. Great stuff!

My dad and I rode our motorcycles to South Dakota from southern California in 1981. On our ride back we went thru Reno, then on to the California coast. We stopped at Harrah's to see the car collection. If I remember right, Bill Harrah had died and the alot of the cars in the collection would be sold off. My dad and I really wanted to see the collection in its entirety. One of the cars that I remember seeing was the Jerrari. You were allowed to walk thru certain areas of the shop. Although it was behind a rope, the front of the Jerrari was at the rope and the hood was off. Seeing the Ferrari engine in a Jeep was a head shaker. 43yrs later and I still shake my head and smile.

He even had a Ford TriMotor airplane that we could go up inside. Yep, going through his collection was mind boggling on how many cars there were. Being that my family had a home in North Tahoe, we got to see the "Thunderbird" boat with the Merlin engines. They keep that boat near Sand Harbor in a beautiful boat garage. Jay, if you ever get a chance to do a video on that 57' boat, please do so. I am sure the current owners would LOVE to have you and your video crew up to do a nice video on it. Thanks again Jay for your videos. ......Russell D.

The Harrah museum was amazing. I saw it back then. I remember a row of Model T’s, one for each year, each car original with matching numbers, and all in perfect condition. The same with Model A’s and Lincoln’s. He had a President Kennedy Lincoln convertible. I remember looking at Rickenbacker's, and he had a Ford Tri-Motor.
The shop was incredible. We’ll never see it’s like again, but thanks, Jay for your efforts in preserving automotive history.

Wow, this episode of Jay Leno's Garage brought back some memories. I was fortunate to have befriended Terry Ward (now deceased) when I moved from rural Nevada to the Reno/Tahoe area in the late 1970's. Terry was a very good friend of Mr. Harrah and had keys to Bill's warehouses down by the RR tracks. On two occasions, shortly before Bill died, Terry took me there to see the old cars. With flashlights in hand, we roamed the dirt floors of the warehouses for hours; I don't recall why there was no lighting. I don't think Bill ever drove the majority of these cars, not even for one mile, as they were mostly in various stages of disrepair. Importantly, Bill had tucked these essentially complete examples away, protected from the weather. The thing I remember most about the warehouse trips is how I was able to see the evolution of technology emerge from year to year; like when windshield wipers first appeared, etc. We also visited Bill's shop once where I saw the Jerrarri in person. I was so smitten by that machine that I don't even remember what else was in there at the time. I do remember the shop being so clean I would have been fine with eating off the floor. Before Nixon's national 55 mph speed limit was imposed, Nevada did have long stretches of rural Interstate with no speed limit but none in the immediate Reno-Tahoe area. I think the closest of such zones was between Fernley and Lovelock; however, the State also had many miles of two-laners that were generously posted at 80 mph. It's sad that the Harrah collection was broken up but, the National Automobile Museum holds a good sampling from that collection and provides an interesting stop for visitors to the area. I try to take my grandchildren there when they visit hoping some might catch the classic vehicle bug.

Mr Jimmy Carter gifted us the 55 mph speed limit in 1974 as part of an "emergency" package to reduce fuel consumption. That particular emergency lasted for 13 years. Another provision was the seatbelt interlock system that prevented starting the car unless the driver's belt was buckled. That emergency ended almost immediately as car buyers pushed back, hard. Dealers were then required to bypass the system. I know all this because I "inherited" a 1974 Plymouth Duster when I got married in 1975. I noticed wiring under the seat. She had bought the car new, but had no idea what it was for. Took awhile to figure out what it was all about.

    • @luminousswan560
      @luminousswan560 Місяць тому

@@TomC2100 The emergency (temporary) 55 mph National Maximum Speed Limit was signed into law by President Richard M. Nixon on January 2, 1974, and became effective 60 days later. It was made permanent when Congress enacted, and President Gerald Ford signed into law, the Federal-Aid Highway Amendments of 1974 on January 4, 1975. Jimmy Carter, who served as POTUS from 1977 to 1981, inherited and had nothing to do with the 55 mph nightmare.

I bought an '84 Jeep Grand Wagoneer circa 2000. It had a 360ci/5.9L V-8. It was my fishing rig. It could take me places most fisherman couldn't get too. One of my favorite spots was on the Stanislaus River in Calaveras Co, CA. That part of the Stanislaus is in a deep, steep river canyon. There was a crude road that switched back down the canyon wall. I would put the Wagoneer in 4 low and the compression of the engine would enable a slow crawl up and down the canyon. I didn't have to brake on the way down. I sold the Wagoneer when I moved in 2003. I wish now I'd hung onto it. I notice Jay has a Dieppe poster on the wall. Dieppe is the locale of a European auto rally that goes back a long way. But in WWII - in Aug 1942 - one of the most savage battles of the war was fought there, on the beaches, in the sea and in the air. My dad was captured by the Germans there and spent the rest of the war in various German POW camps.

I worked a t a Jeep/Lincoln/Mercury dealership as a technician during college from 1978 thru 1982. Air conditioners for AMC during this period were mostly afterthought devises that were mounted under the dash resembling an aftermarket unit but for the most part integrated well, and were matched to the interior color. The AC unit in this truck looks to be an aftermarket under dash unit (possibly an ARA brand) mounted in the center of the dash where the original glove box was. Yes the glove box is these early jeeps was in the middle of the dash.

Could be your steering box or the steering column joint has play. Or other ball joints on the drag link and so forth.
The chrysler year grand wagoneers have track bars thats the name. Not sure what it is you mentioned. The ilder ones dont. Like my 76 Jeep j10 has no track bars.
Not 100% needed for solid axels on leaf springs more for coil springs. But it still helps.
