Have had mine 2 years now and it's a brilliant amp. Sounds great cranked and at bedroom levels. Who would have thought a 40 watt amp would sound great at home? The 6 button footswitch really makes it shine.
Heads up, the vintage variant shown here (DSL40CRC) comes with a different speaker from the normal DSL40CR black version. The "Vintage" DSL40CRC comes with a Marshall G12 Vintage speaker, while the normal DSL40CR comes with a Celestion V-Type speaker. I can't speak to which is better. All this time, I thought I was a huge V-Type fan, only to find out it was a G12 Vintage all along.
I have the40c with the Sweetwater Creamback upgrade. It’s a great amp. The clean channel is wonderful, and after me doing the “bright switch modification” the ‘lead’ channel is also good.
I play it in tandem with a Vox AC 15C2 which has real tremolo and spring reverb. They rock and switch between them. The loop of the Marshall is where I parallel my modulation pedals. Very happy with that set up!
I changed out the stock speaker to an eminence Texas heat, and it sounds much better. Oh yeah, and I re-biased the tubes which took a lot of the fizz out of the drive channel. Sounds really good now.
@@justarthur1788 I believe the bias was taken down as they were running hot. I had a resistor or something similar go bad so I had to send it in to be repaired, which was covered under warranty. The shop in Nashville rebiased the tubes when they fixed the issue. I’ve written a lot of forms that these amps usually show up being biased too hot thus creating fizz and harness.
@@TheChristafershawnThis answers my concerns perfectly. I love the clean tones on these DSLs but the fizzy gain tones bothered me so much. If I can remove that, I think these would be right up my alley
I bought one 6 months ago and love it. I give it a 9 out of 10 only because of the so, so reverb. I also use it with my captor X cabs and it's awesome.
I had an ordinary DSL40CR for a few years, loved it but then sold it and bought a Fender Twin Reverb TM, with which I am dead pleased. (Too many posts claiming it's "disposable" and won't last, but I don't at all agree with that point of view.) Over the years I've had a number of tube Fenders and Marshalls as well as some digital/SS, so I would say I've got ears with a solid level of experience. BUT...I realized I dearly missed the Marshall DSL40CR, its sound and versatility. So I bought the European Vintage model, all black and beautiful but still the same amp. It's like meeting a good old friend again! This is truly a superb amp and a bargain price-wize.
Crazy timing Jack! I've been researching this series of amps a lot lately in search of a good combo amp that can give me JCM800 types of tone. The cream tolex is super nice on this limited run! I've only seen the other vintage style limited, the energy of the cream cosmetic looks awesome
My second tube amp was one of these when I was on a much tighter budget, and realized I preferred the Marshall sound over the Fender Blues Jr I had. Cleans were great, did edge of breakup stuff and pushing it with pedals well. Didn’t care for the distortion channel much at all. Have since upgraded to the SV20C and am much happier with what I can get from that.
I've been waiting for years for Marshall to iron out all the bugs in the different incarnations of this amp. Best I can tell, they've done it, and gave us more stuff. My friend has one and LOVES it. It may be time for me to get one, possibly the 100 watt head. It looks like Marshall isn't making them right now - the big online retailers don't have the DSL's but there are a lot of them out there to be had, new, almost new, and used. Good point about the speaker. Also I retired my AC30 because of the weight, but it's 78 pounds, the 40 would be a big improvement. Many of us don't want gushing surfer reverb - I like a small "always on" splash, and many Marshall lovers aren't interested in reverb anyway. This verb is a huge improvement from the universally hated verb of the Vintage Modern. Really good sounding though, if not strong enough for some things. Some players would need some kind of pedal. Thanks for the video.
Nice boutiquey cream and weave. I have had the regular one nearly a year and I love it. Reverb is a little meh. Foot switch is a nice included but the big foot switch is totally worth the extra cost. FX loop is nice.
A 12AT7 works great as a reverb driver and a phase inverter because of its current handling. Believe me, they’re not the best sounding lower gain preamp tube. Try a 5751 or a 12AY7 instead, you’ll be happier.
I’ve owned one 4months now, clean channels really nice takes effects like a champ, distortion channels I’ve found hard live with for my particular taste. But for my fellow metalheads running a hx stomp badonk, placater dirty, ubersonic presets straight into fxreturn sounds killer.
Had one for a short period of time. I liked it and got some great tones out of it. The 6 button FS makes it basically a 4 channel amp. I sold it because I didn't find myself using it as much as I thought I would. I didn't mind the weight but I thought it was just too big physically. The other reason I sold it was because for a 40 watt tube amp, it just didn't seem as loud as it should be, especially compared to other amps I own with less wattage. It's a decent sounding amp and I would own one again.
I have both the 20 and the 40. For a classic rock style, the lack of reverb is fine. I was listening to Thin Lizzy today and they're pretty much playing dry. If you're going for ambience, you're gonna need pedals but you would have them for that style anyway. I love these amps.
From what I have read most do sell the amp before a break down occurs due to being unreliable in craftsmanship, the real Marshall's are hand wired not made in Vietnam by people that aren't musicians. The probable cause of failure is probably due to poor soldering connections and cheap parts, The amp vibrates a lot when played and jiggling them around during transport is probable an issue with them as well. Having it set stationary and using the Emulated out will probable help it's longevity and breakdown likeliness, and yes I own one which I never use but it does sound phenomenal.
this is great video. How do you get this to reasonable volume levels in a house? Im really bouncing between a 20 and the 40...the 40 has the crunch channel and the master volume which is why i'm thinking that's the direction...but i dont need / nor want to push this to high volume to maintain Marshall tone..if that makes sense.
I have had one these ( the regular black tolex ) for several years now and it’s just been sitting there for way too long without playing it at all . I have to revisit this amp. I did put a cream back in it. Definitely didn’t like the 7080 it came with.
DSL40C was released in 2012, DSL40CR in 2018. Plus Blackstar HT series upgraded to mk3 recently. I wouldn't be surprised if this amp would be up issued soon. I'd be hoping for something south of 20kg, in a slightly more compact cab, with high quality IRs via XLR.
I would suspect a new version of the DSL will be announced at Namm in January . I hope they do . I already have the 40CR bur if they release a new one I will buy it in a heartbeat.
I was between this and the Bassbreaker 30r. The cleans of the Fender were the deciding factor for me in the end, though. I don't regret my choice, although this sounds pretty good as well
Would like to see a video comparison between it and the cheaper/light weight/grab and go single channel black star debut 50. Have you tried/played through the black star debut 50/debut 100....If so your thoughts?
after watching a number of these videos, I'm beginning to question the design/layout (and possibly reliability?) with Blackstar. I was seriously looking at the HT Club 40 for a combo amp in this size range but from a "tech-repair" standpoint, it's not looking like a wise choice. The DSL 40 may well be the way to go and still stay in a reasonable price range? I'm not sure what else to consider that might be comparable, well-designed, and mainly reliable.
I put a V30 in my DSL 20 first and quickly found out that is not the speaker for the DSL its too bright and fizzy, so I bought a used 75 w Creamback and it definitely suits the DSL’s voicing better in my opinion. I was coming from a Rectoverb 25 and an oversized recto 2x12 so I thought v30 was the right speaker for me, but not with a Marshall at least not the DSLs. I actually preferred the dsl over the rectoverb the big glass makes a difference I didn’t realize how mushy the rectoverb got up at higher volumes until I got the Marshall. The DSL 20, 40, and 100 are some of the best bang for your buck amps you can get today in my opinion, put an eq in the loop and a couple boosts or OD out front, I like to have one OD for the high gain channel and another for the clean . You can have a lot of fun and your neighbors can too with a dsl and a SD1.
@brandonjackson5865 a few kinda related side rants... why did marshall have to use 10 inch speakers on their sv20 and sc20 combos? What a huge bummer. I hope they come up with a new v2 dsl20 , with the other 2 gain modes from the dsl40 and better reverb.
@@fuzzymuppet1990 that’s a good question on the 10 inch speaker in the studio series combos ? I would think a 12 inch would’ve been preferable for most Marshall “guys” . I also agree a dsl20 with the 4 modes and separate master volumes of the 40 would be really cool, I imagine they were trying to hit a certain price point on the 20 watt dsl is why it doesn’t have the same features as the 40 ? I also think they should offer the 40 in a head only version. The 20cr is just about the perfect size for a 1x12 combo in my opinion it’s big enough and with the resonance control not to sound boxy but it’s light and compact enough to grab and go . I also think they should offer the stealth version on the whole dsl line from 100 watt down to the 1 watter, but that’s just about ascetics only. I could’ve bought a 20 watt 800 stealth head when I bought my dsl20 but for the money the dsl20cr was the better option for me at the time , I was looking for a head only but the 20cr just did it for me that day and no one had a head only in my local shops. A stereo 2x12 with basically 2 DSL 20s with a real spring reverb would be cool too but probably too expensive. Reverb isn’t going to make or break an amp for me it’s nice to have, I just wish you could assign it to the clean channel only another feature the 40 does that the 20 doesn’t. I don’t know what Marshall will come out with next but it’s probably about time they do the current dsl line hasn’t changed since 2018 right ?
@brandonjackson5865 a 20 watt 12 inch jcm 800 combo, would have been the thing for me. I've already got the dsl40cr with the creamback and the 6 button switch, and im happy with it sort of. ... I'm not playing out anymore and most the time ill get bitched at if i play my electric guitar (unplugged )too loud. So there's that. Im looking at a few options now. I use line 6 native and some ml labs amp sims, which sound decent but Might get a friedman IR-J or a nano cortex or something like that. I also wanna get a Spark mini to dick around with.
The Achilles' heel of these amps is the sound farts out on the gain channel set above 6 causing a delay in the attack. Also, the reverb is very lacking. If they could sort out these probs, great amp..
I've got the Origin 50 head and it's really awesome but you have to crank the absolute crap out of it. I live in a big house on 40 acres and so can run it full blast but I don't know if I'd recommend it for people that don't have a big place to jam in.
@@hon8177 My Origin 50 only feels like it "sounds" like a Marshall when it's cranked. Is that normal for Marshalls? I have 2 AC30's that I use all the time as well and they seem to get much more varied sounds.
You tend to buy a Marshall for the dirt/overdrive, and if that isn’t really good in this amp, then why buy this Marshall? The overdrive sounded brittle, and wasn’t inspiring to listen to. Your playing couldn’t fix this. While the cleans weren’t Fender Blackface cleans, they sounded really good, and better than any of the drive sounds. I’d never buy one new. I’d look used, and do some internet research to see what speaker made the amp sound better, I might consider buying one, factoring in speaker upgrade already done.
Ive got the 5 watt cr version for home practice and like it but as others have noted reverb is so so and i prefer effects pedal to on board distortion altthough it does have merit in some instances
I found one today at a local pawnshop in Houston TX for $690.00. I should talk them down. I have a Celestion Sidewinder 150 watt speaker from my Marshall Reverb 75 solid state amp that’s starting to crap out. I also have a V30 with the fabric dust cover, & two Jensen neodymium 100 watt speakers. Think any of these would be suitable?
I don't know about that. I have used almost every Celestion available with my DSl 40CR and with every speaker it sounded better than it did with the V Type . The V type is not for everyone . Alot of people have swapped then out and were much happier wirh the results .
I had the Artist.Cool amp but you can get very very wrapped up in tweaking it in the tone studio software which has tons of effects and a couple eq's. I found myself doing that more than I was playing. Just my experience with it. I went back to a standard tube amp w/pedals
I wish they would make that a regular production model but with better speakers . I love My 40CR with 2 by 12 extension cabs I would by a 2 by 12 combo version if it became available and I Would throw a couple of G12H30 55Hz speakers in their
What is better - DSL40CR or JVM215C? Obviously there's a price difference. I have the DSL20H and the JVM215C and I like both pretty similarly disregarding price.
Own it, with the Celestion "Made for" Marshall Vintage 12"....I hate this amp, the ultra gain is fizzy, and looking online, it's the main complaint. Lots of people trying to tame that fizz, I tried several and it did nothing. The Classic Gain is the clean channel and that's ok. But again the ultra gain side is fizzy at ALL levels, you can't get rid of it, and that's enough to bug me because I stopped using Marshall for ENGL, and Marshall doesn't even come close.
I loved mine... Until it broke when a friend was doing a live show with it. That was not a a fun night. Also, the reverb is underwhelming. My next Marshall-style amp will be a Ceriatone.
Mine broke too after 3 months only. Got it fixed but decided to get rid of it as it never sounded the same. Replaced it with a Boss Katana Artist Gen 3 - I adore this amp!!
I know many still love Marshall amps. I am no longer on their band wagon (no pun intended). For me, it’s not the sound as much as it is the lack of quality components. I have had very bad luck with their P.C. Boards as well as other components causing premature amp failures. I know I will get hate responses from those who worship Marshall. I was there myself years ago, but they continue to find ways to make their amps cheaper, not better. I know many amp makers are doing that just to stay in business. But Marshall is Marshall, there should be a minimum quality that they simply are not currently meeting.
I’ve never bought a Marshall amp because of their clean sound…. I have numerous fender amps that own clean sound ! It’s weird to me that people are looking at Marshall for a clean sound🤔
The amps are great, especially for players who use pedals, and want the crunchy Marshall tone. It’s very easy to dial these amps in. I don’t care for the gain circuits much either, but the lower gain one would work fine for a gig. The problem is they’re made cheap, and the same issue as the DSL40C, just takes longer, and less units have the problem. Lookup reviews of this amp, and you’ll find that many had to return new ones, because they just go out. I’d get an old TSL instead. There are lots of used ones that still work, and they were made in England. I’ll never buy a made in China amp again.
@@CorbCorbin It's a shame that Marshall would even stain their name like that at all, but I guess you can't put out great stuff 100% of the time. I've gone the amp modeler route, full in. Tonemaster Pro and an FR-10 frfr speaker cabinet. I figure, why not have like 70 different amps and pedals at my fingertips for a fraction of the cost, and they sound so good these days.
One feature this amp has that too few amps have is reverb adjustment for each channel. Most amps you adjust reverb to taste on clean, switch to channel two, and the reverb sounds all kaflooey. Yuck.
If you are looking for killer speakers, check out Avatar and Fane! The M65 and the AV75 are absolutely killer. I prefer Greenback style speakers with most of my amps, tames that fizz. Also, popping NOS tubes into it can help add that extra bit of sweetness. Mullards for UK amps atw.
From what im hearing, i definitely like the blues jr better. I know this isnt a comparison of the two, but I perfer the less harsh sound of a blues jr. Not to mention, the biggest flaw of the marshall is the harsh and brittle sound of the overdrive. Though the marshals cleans weren't that bad, just not my favorite.

The Origin 50 doesn’t have enough gain IMO.
I had a v-30 laying around , they say Marshall and vintage 30s don’t mix well mine is a rock and roll machine
Amazing Amp and pedal platform.
Hey jack nice video can you review the Roland JC 22 that looks like a nice amp
I know the speakers look cheap. But I advise to leave them alone. They don't disappoint.
Agreed. V-Type is an excellent speaker with a classic Celestion voicing. Creamback 65 also sounds great, but tames the amp a little too much IMO
I don't know about that. I have used almost every Celestion available with my DSl 40CR and with every speaker it sounded better than it did with the V Type .
The V type is not for everyone . Alot of people have swapped then out and were much happier wirh the results .
This or a katana artist, for a home player?
I know, apples and oranges, but still….?
this. Had both and while the Katana is a very nice amp, this just sounds so good, even at home volumes
I had the Artist.Cool amp but you can get very very wrapped up in tweaking it in the tone studio software which has tons of effects and a couple eq's. I found myself doing that more than I was playing. Just my experience with it. I went back to a standard tube amp w/pedals
Marshall for sure !!!
Lots of people love these amps but I've always found them to sound 'fizzy' with drive : /
what does the cr stand for? cannabis rex?
Combo reverb
Nice looking amp and sound good to me.
I have the Ltd Ed 402. I love it. (2x12)
I wish they would make that a regular production model but with better speakers .
I love My 40CR with 2 by 12 extension cabs
I would by a 2 by 12 combo version if it became available and I Would throw a couple of G12H30 55Hz speakers in their
Could I get away with this at home on low power mode and low master volume in a detached house
Yeah the distortion channel doesn’t sound right to me. The cleans are nice. A buddy had an older DSL model we tried to tame.
What is better - DSL40CR or JVM215C? Obviously there's a price difference. I have the DSL20H and the JVM215C and I like both pretty similarly disregarding price.
JVM. This amp is really good, but the JVM is in a different league.
Is Marshall's logo permanently changed? I do like the colour scheme of this new amp but the classic logo should've been kept..
That was the original (or at least very early) logo - it’s just used on a handful of models and limited editions like this one
Phenomenal amp
I loved mine... Until it broke when a friend was doing a live show with it. That was not a a fun night.
Also, the reverb is underwhelming.
My next Marshall-style amp will be a Ceriatone.
Mine actually just broke too 🤷♂️
Mine broke too after 3 months only.
My DSL15 was very boxy sounding
This is a great amp.
Anybody know what the "DSL" stands for? Been wondering that for years, and I just never bothered to ask.
Dual Super Lead
@@JackFossett Oh, that sounds really obvious now lol
I might have even known that at some point.
Thanks.
I’ve never bought a Marshall amp because of their clean sound…. I have numerous fender amps that own clean sound ! It’s weird to me that people are looking at Marshall for a clean sound🤔
Try a 100 watt Marshall. Glorious clean channel. Tom Bukovac swears by it.
There are many people who love the Marshall clean sound..
Why do people struggle with the concept of taste and preference?
I prefer marshall for a pedal platform with my band. More mids, tighter bass, it cut better in the mix.
Playing heavy metal...If you don't like the gain go back to a Fender amp that doesn't chug! We want metal amps! Marshall delivers that.
I loved the jcm 2000’s, but I have never liked the new dsl’s.
Rosanna Inlet
I don't like the distortion channel, at all. Beautiful amp though the looks are spot on! And the clean is nice.
@@CorbCorbinThese are made in Vietnam, not China and are one of the best-built amps for their price point.
Put an EQ pedal in the effects loop and you can take the fizz out. If you're a metal player you need a boost in front of the amp to get chuggy tones
He was diming the gain knob, that's probably why. Otherwise, it's safe to say you just don't like Marshall amps.
One feature this amp has that too few amps have is reverb adjustment for each channel. Most amps you adjust reverb to taste on clean, switch to channel two, and the reverb sounds all kaflooey. Yuck.
Already got an amp with a pathetic reverb. Why? That intro sounded great though.
That’s my biggest qualm with it. But a great sounding amp.
Its a TUBE amp, no CLEAN tones ???
Alberta Garden
Nice cleans…. Love the breakup….. not a fan of the dirty channel
Sawayn Burgs
11 minutes still no idea
Emmy Divide
Goyette Parkways
Cummings Glens
This video is a major injustice to this amp. It sounds nothing like this. This video is horrible. This amp sounds great.
Man I wanted to buy that exact amp but they sold out in that retro color way… fyi these amps sound great with a speaker upgrade 🥸
