Launch X431 DiagunIV vs. Snap-On vs. Autel - Part 2

  • For Part 2, let's test some older cars with the Diagun IV:
    goo.gl/A4etbD
    2002 Suzuki XL-7
    1996 Mercury Mystique at 9:00
    1992 Oldsmobile Sillouhette at 20:37
I focus on the real-world usability of the scanner, including special functions and BI-DIRECTIONAL controls.
After testing the Launch DiagunIV on 5 vehicles, we get a pretty good picture of how it stacks up to the legendary Snap-On Verus and the trusty Autel MaxiDas DS708.
    Enjoy!

For those wondering where I bought my Launch Diagun IV, here is the link: goo.gl/A4etbD
UPDATE: the Launch will be back in stock by March 29th :)
The seller told me they would offer a DISCOUNT to buyers that go to their amazon page via this link. The technical support is good; they answered my questions about registering the tool right away.

Thanks for posting this! I got my Diagun IV about six months ago after seeing Eric O use one a bunch of times on his channel. Back then they were going for around $520 on Amazon, and I was lucky to get one from a seller running a promo for $490 all in. Mine was a more basic kit that didn't come with all the pre-OBD2 adapters, but I doubt I'll ever need that functionality and it looks pretty hit-or-miss anyway.
Needless to say I'm pleased with my purchase, but even for over $600 the Launch is a great deal and I wouldn't hesitate to get one today.

I pulled the trigger on the Launch Mini Pro for 699 last night (from Diagnose Dan's page). I've been eyeing these for a while, and from what Keith said, it sounds like the software is pretty much the same. I opted for the in between size strictly for viewing more data graphs at once. I believe my MS906BT, which was 1249 from AESwave, would be considered "equivalent". Basically the updated version of the DS708, but with bluetooth. It just doesn't go into programming, does some coding though.

So, i have the Launch torque and a Snap on Verus. I just bought the Diagun IV , because it seemed to be the best bang for the buck and its cool. I just had a 04 Mercedes in. Both Launch tools and the Verus would not communicate with the SRS system....my friend's Autel will, and cleared the self inflicted codes. Great shootout, Ivan! That Launch is pretty sweet - love the compact size . The only tool I could get to work on the '86 Grand Marquis is my old AutoXray AX7000 that I haven't taken out of the box for 2 years now (I'd better check the batteries - bet they let the blue crusties out ...). Very basic tool - no bi-directional control, and it cuts off at 2006, lol.
I think you should give the Autel Maxisys a try - mine (MS906TS) does pretty good on Fords. It's extremely slow on Nissan (and one other brand that I can't recall) - and I mean EXTREMELY. Everything else it's been good on. Seems the fastest on GM. Lots of capability in that one. Rarely do I run into something it can't do. Since I skipped an update, it seems to be flaking out on me lately, though. Half the cost of the tool for an update is a real bummer ... but any way you slice it, it's still THOUSANDS cheaper than the Verus.
I'm with you on ABS! Hate the crap! Cars feel more dangerous to me WITH ABS. I have proven, on my own road in the snow, that I can stop a vehicle sooner using my foot, with NO electronic help. Our '93 Volvo 940 actually has it (and airbags), but the system in that seems to work better than any vehicle I've driven, so I left it. My wife drives it more than I do anyway. On the Silverado, everything is tied together via comm lines, so no disabling that one without the dashboard Christmas tree light show, LOL.

The launch has the power balance test on fords that support it. I use it all of the time and its update rate is faster than the Autel. It has some awesome capabilities for its size. I’ve programmed dodge key fobs, an older Jeep passenger door module for the keyless entry, Honda keys, Honda passenger airbag modules, etc. I knew it would do a lot but it still surprises me sometimes.

I think a lot of the issues in the smaller units may have to do with the wireless link. Although it is a nice option 90% of the time, the direct cable is almost always faster. There have also been a few "rumors" that for some vehicle access and connection options, the wireless doesn't work, but if you connect it up, it does.

The maxisys has the J2534 pass-through device for flashing the cars computer. You can't flash the EEPROM without it and its at least a 500 dollar device and doesn't even include the computer or factory subscriptions needed for the car. Just thought that should be clarified why the autel costs significantly more. My friend has one for his car... if you wan't to program the cars parameters you NEED that device. A lot of people do it because the the factory tune favors emissions but they want better fuel economy and power. Much like the VW scandal.

@Todd Orton was it $100 or so less? Saw one on line, $520 + $46 to ship from China. Amazon, free shipping $639. Worth the extra to me to go with Amazon. Looks really great for a shop or DIYer (like me).

Hi Ivan i have the x431 V and i used it for 92 mitsubishi mighty max and it worked just fine, read codes, live data and clear codes. But for a reazon a couldn't get anything for 2107 Toyota Yaris ia, and i even tried to do it on Mazda since this Toyota is all Mazda

I was told that there is a fair amount of code crossover between the Chinese manufacturers. There are no hard and fast rules but in general coverage will be weak on cars older than about 5 years before the tool came out. That's why snap on is so good on the old cars. I keep a classic 'brick' for engine diagnostics on the 90s BMWs no other tool will show oxygen sensor data for me on the pre obd cars.
