Good job Ivan. You'll soon be the Jedi Master of repairs. :)
I noticed you have a conical tip on the iron, that is good for small soldering areas. If you need to heat up a larger area, you should change the tip to a T18-D32 which is a larger chisel tip better suited for what you were doing. Between 500-700 degrees is about the best temperature for soldering. You'll have to experiment as to what's the best overall temperature for your situation. Keep up the great work. Sean

@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics Acer is a huge company and their products are no worse than others however, I'd put them on the list to consider long before some other brands. Asus is a good brand.
BTW, all mobile CPU's are half the processing power of any desktop CPU due to the power saving needs of a laptop. Core i7's with much L3 cache memory @ 2.5 Ghz or faster are the only option for a good running lap top. Of course, 16 GB of system memory or greater is best too and for those considering a new laptop in the past year or so the SSD or M.2 nvme hard drive is the best option to have for speed, battery life, less heat and value.

For repairing old parts and re-flowing old solder joints, one of the most helpful things I have found is to apply a bit of external flux to the joint before soldering. The solder will wet the old surfaces much better. The tiny amount of flux inside rosin core solder wire is OK for new work, but is not always enough for old surfaces. Numerous fluxes are available for electronics, and they come in various forms: paste, liquid, and in applicator pens. For some reason, flux for electronics is hard to find in stores. You may have to go online. Do not use the flux from hardware store that is intended for sweating copper plumbing joints, as it may corrode electronic circuits over time.

Ivan, soldering to a ground plane is hard to do since the mass wicks the heat away. Circuit pads have thermal isolation so they are electrically connected but not so much thermally. (Looks like a star in the layout). Gongrats on the repair!

Nice work Ivan! Today's laptops are built to break, even some business line models are problematic.
I did send my Asus out for repair twice, the second time only for a freakin AC adapter that could just have been shipped.
After the warranty expired I had to fix a couple of weird problems like overheating for too much factory applied thermal compound on the CPU, and a no power on issue that turned out to be a shorted out capacitor placed in parallel with an identical one.
This is clearly planned obsolescence, I've only desoldered the shorted cap to fix the problem, nasty!
Now the laptop is working fine since the repairs made two years ago.
Rule #1: never trust computer manufacturers
Rule #2: if you want your computer properly repaired, (like Scotty says) then fix it yourself 😄😄

    A couple of comments:
    1) Buy a Dell computer or an Apple. When I worked for "the man" I demanded either a Dell Latitude (Business class not the cheap shit they sell at Costco) or a MacBook. In fact I didn't even have to demand it that's the only computers the IT department would support.
    2) How the hell do you solder to aluminum which is what the ground plain seemed to be made from. It is technically possible to solder aluminum but it requires special alloys (and tin-lead isn't one of them) and special fluxes (rosin isn't one of those either). The native oxide of aluminum has got to be removed and that's why TIG welding on aluminum has got to be done with AC current which cathodically removes the native oxide. Using rosin core solder and a soldering iron it is impossible to solder anything to aluminum.

I have been working in electronics since 1965 and I agree with the comments below - Acer laptops are to be avoided. Consider Toshiba. Additionally X2 ...
I have used a magnetic tray with dividers for years to avoid loosing screws and mixing the different types - long in a short hole can be very bad.
You might consider replacing your multi-meter with one from the FLUKE family of devices. Functions like screen freeze when you can't see the screen, auto mode select i.e. no buttons or switches to mess with comes in very handy when working alone in the field.

Nice video :) I watch car repair videos and (retro) computer & videogame console repair videos as well in UA-cam so this one was interesting fix. My current laptop is Packard-Bell EasyNote from 2013, never had a problem with it, still works fine. Previous one was Toshiba which had problems, hard disk destroyed itself in the first month, luckily it was replaced by the warranty.
Also, my 2001 HP Brio desktop PC had badly installed 3,5" disk drive connector from the factory, prevented me from doing a Windows 98 boot disk at the time. Fixed it myself.
First ever computer problem was Commodore 64 which PSU started blowing fuses, of course right after warranty expired :D Had to replace it as it was filled with epoxy resin of some kind, no way to fix it.

Sounds bodgy using tin but it solders nice and easy to stab a tiny hole through it, use your special powers of modification :-D

When measuring low resistances like this always touch your probes together to see what the resistance of the probe wires are.
I usually measure in the neighborhood of 0.6 ohms.
I always get rid of all the multi finger touches. Two fingers for scroll is OK. Three fingers set to nothing. Four fingers set to nothing.
I also like to disable tap for left click. I like left and right click to be only where the left and right click buttons are.

It's a good idea to lightly scrape the surface of the metal you want to solder to, to remove surface oxidation. If that's aluminum, it's really hard to solder to without a special flux. Would be better to run a wire from some known grounded solder joint back to the main ground solder joint on the pad.

    Flux pen!
Like a chisel tip version of a Sharpie with flux instead of ink.
Ideally for large metal surfaces you need a soldering iron with high thermal capacity to heat the spot quickly.
Too small an iron will not be able to heat the spot quickly enough before it's tip cools, the thermal transfer from the element to tip may also not be adequate.
Some compromise can be had by starting with a higher tip temperature, but it's not ideal.

As a Amateur Radio operator I have done a ton of soldering. Flux is definitely recommended. You also want to use rosin core solder, which is what I think you used. Never use acid core solder And NEVER blow on your solder joint. Blowing on the joint can cause a cold joint which can cause intermittent problems.
I agree with Simon too. A chisel tip is better to use. I only used a sharp pointed tip for fine work.

I believe for soldering to aluminum there is a special solder that makes it much easier.

    • @reecenewton3097
      @reecenewton3097 4 роки тому

Yes, but for occasional use, in electrical work, you can use rosin core solder but aluminum forms a coat of oxide when exposed to air which impedes solder. You can scrape or sand the small area where you want the solder joint to be, but the oxide will reform almost immediately. To get by this, press the iron into the aluminum and scratch the molten solder around with the iron: the oxide will be disturbed and removed, at least in part, and since the metal is covered with the molten solder, air won't get to it, and the joint is made.

I bought a refurb Dell Business laptop running Vista about 10 years ago. About a year later the hard drive was giving trouble, so I replaced it with a more powerful one, and still going strong. It gets turned on at 6AM and off at 9PM daily. I would buy another.

For my sins I was once a support tech / engineer for many brands including Acer for everything from tablets to servers. This maybe a ground issue but also be aware using laptops not made for harsh environments e.g. wide temp variants can cause internal condensation something which acer touchpads used to suffer from. Let them warm up and dry out and the touchpad started working again.
I don't get it, you spend thousands on diagnostic tools like Autel Maxisys Elite, Pico scope etc then you go buy a budget laptop. Why not invest in an outdoors laptop that can take a tumble and cope with rain and temp differences etc. Your financial thought process is not sound imho. Your money, your choice.

I know little to nothing about computers but have been told Acer is very cheap quality. Perhaps made in china by slaves? I doubt slaves offer much of a warranty.
