How to Make a Feminist Dating App

  • When Whitney Wolfe, the founder of the dating app Bumble, was in college, she was always comfortable making the first move. Today, she’s at the helm of a successful app that puts women in control of initiating conversations and connections. “Generally speaking, women my age have been raised with the notion that they are meant to sit put and not make the first move in a relationship,” she says in this film. Wolfe acknowledges that despite her feminist app, there’s a gender problem in the tech industry. “You can't necessarily blame tech,” she says. “We need to look at the root of the problem, and the root of the problem is the education system.”
This is the fourth episode of The Atlantic’s video series “Women and Leadership,” which explores insights and advice from five women in politics, entertainment, and tech. It was directed by Lucy Wells.

In reality the problem of the app is that women text first just something meaningless ("hi" etc.) and then wait for the guy to proceed with the converstaion which is often not happening. The men on Bumble are generally not assertive so the women there feel frustrated. So it doesn't work very much.

I hate to break it to you, ladies, but being the guy "in charge" is not always a fun thing. You might look at it as guys having all the power, but it creates a tremendous amount of pressure on the guy. I am expected to give a captivating opener to pique the girl's interest, to say all the right things in order to keep her attention, to feel the situation out and ask her out on a date, to lead the conversation, to make her feel special and pretty, to show confidence without being arrogant, to show humor but only the right kind of humor, to treat her like a lady, but also not be boring, to be assertive but not pushy, to be clever but not cheesy, to prove to her that I am worth her time, to listen more than I talk, and to always know the right thing to say. Not complaining, just pointing out that being the one "in the driver's seat" is not always an envious position to be in. I like that bumble is trying to change the dynamics in relationships so that it isn't so one-sided. I don't mind leading the conversation, but I find a girl who will actually get up and ask me out first to be attractive. It shows confidence and independence

When you infuse narrow ideology into your company you shoot yourself in the foot. I would not invest in this company, it might get some users from the free attention they get by advertising the feminist angle but it's unlikely to produce an enduring user base. Also there is a reason why men primarily make the first move and not the other way around. This all screams of another faddish startup, they will burn through whatever money they have, adoption will stall and it will tank.

I support entrepreneurship 100%, and I am happy for you and wish you the best. I just want to point out that many women are delicate by nature, and that doesn't make them feel less confident or less secure of themselves. It's actually the opposite. Being delicate makes them feel more feminine, and being feminine makes them feel more confident and more secure of themselves. Masculinity and femininity are supposed to compliment each other. The role of a man's masculinity is to bring out feminine traits in a woman. The role of a woman's femininity is to bring out masculine traits in a man, like protecting women, for example. Few things are, imo, more attractive in a man as making a woman feel protected.

Wrong. It does not "give women the chance to make the first move". It REQUIRES that ONLY women can make the first move. It forbids men from saying hi first. How is this "equality"? Poor Whitney didn't understand English very well.
Conversely, Tinder allows anybody to make a first move. It treats either gender equally. Tinder understands what "equality" means, not Whitney.

If women select to make the first move.....great. However understand this equation: first move + sexual gatekeeper (obviously assuming all is consensual) = a full account of your capacity for individualized choice and action.
Also note that a man saying no, or sexual regret, does not equate to the right to manufacture falsehoods / generate false allegations of sexual misconduct.
Please minister this to the feminist (and all white knights) who use your app.

This is all great advice for any masculine person. Make the first move. Take the lead. Don't expect anything and don't commit right away. Thank you feminism for saying what Andrew Tate does, but with a smile.

How is a woman who is literally running a company aimed at women 'oppressed,' exactly? Where's the Bumble in Saudi Arabia or Iran?
The root of the problem, isn't 'education. First of all, there is no 'problem,' to begin with, but if you're talking about the wage gap, it's about personal choice (getting married, having a child with a man, not having a child with man, etc) that determines earnings. Please do some research.

It's quite evident that Whitney has absolutely no idea what the word "equality" means and as such, doesn't have the foggiest clue what feminism is supposed to be about. Unbelievable.

Why is this video hated so much? Genuine question, coming from a guy. This didn't seem like the toxic kind of feminism that blames men, in the video she blamed the educational system and society as a whole, so men and women are equally at fault.

It‘s literally bumble every second girl has feminism in her bio. An app where only women can get to know you even after a match. I am not sure where the equality point is in here but ok. Will there be an app where only men can get text women? I don‘t think so. It‘s also not sth i am am looking for. I am just saying.

Feminism is not to make women have advantage over men- it’s to bring women to an equal playing field. “She doesn’t need to be a great mathematician to be a tech person” ... is she really implying that she doesn’t need need to be qualified???

This doesn't make sense business-wise. Why would you want to eliminate half of your potential customer base by catering to just women? How is that going to compete against direct competitors such as eHarmony, Match, Tinder, etc? The company offers no real competitive edge in the marketplace to really gain a footing over its competition. I can only see Vulture Capitalist wanting to invest in something like this.

Bumble is so much better than Tinder. Tinder is a glitchy piece of garbage full of bots anyways. I messaged a girl on another app and then joked about her asking me out after one message (because of what her response was), to which she replied "no, imma lady." I moved on...

Bumble is not better at all. It gives you the feeling of being better but it jsn‘t. I tried both apps. Both are trash. Bumble an app full of feminists with delusional high standards who want to control you. An app where only women can text men? Nice equality point here x)
Let me tell you, you‘ll find real women in sport courses. Because these are the women who actually focus on themselves, who are not in need of a relationship to be happy. So should you. Focus on yourself and the right one will come.
