i love to hear his love story andhow he meant his wife, now have a very cute daughter(when this was film ). I just love to hear about people who have a happy family life.
Love this, and he was still in great form in the mid ‘90s. Dickie Dawson was the type of guy that would charm the hell out of your woman, and then have a beer with you. Legendary
Loved Richard Dawson.I recall hearing he lost the fued show as he was simply kissing too many girls.Never believed it as how can you kiss too many girls lol.R.I.P. Richard
Truth is, the original show simply ran its course. ABC put it in the noon slot, and with more affiliates running local news at that time, "Family Feud" suffered for it.
Yes, the same Heather Locklear who worked for TV GIANT Aaron Spelling for many years on Dynasty, Melrose Place and my Favorite T.J. Hooker, in fact, she was H-O-TT HOTT on T.J. Hooker as Stacey Sheridan Plus, she would do comedy on Spin City, but I liked her better on Money Talks with Chris Tucker and Heather's Future Spin City Co-Star Charlie Sheen
In 1983 Richard Dawson kissed Heather Locklear on Feud. Then Shari Belafonte & Heather Thomas. All in a minute. Man lived the male fantasy. #DawsonisFeud
Thing was, back in '94 was my first exposure to Dawson and I thought he was a creepy old guy. It took many years later and watching reruns of his classic run on the Feud and realizing he came from a different era that I grew to appreciate him.
I love Richard, but Ray Combs was the best host of Family Fued. He brought so much energy and excitement to the show, and always looked like he was having a great time. Still, both Richard and Ray couldn't be replaced and anyone who followed were simply pale imitations.
Even worse, when Feud was cancelled the first time, Mark Goodson said that Dawson would come back “over my dead body.” And then Goodson dies, his son Jonathan takes over and the first thing he says “bring back Richard Dawson.” Way to honor thy father on that one, Jonathan. And of course, firing Combs and bringing back Dawson still didn’t save the show.
I think that Richard took having Feud cancelled in ‘95 pretty hard. He was asked to appear on the revival with Louis Anderson & absolutely refused. After the cancellation, he quit show business for good & didn’t work the last 17 years of his life.
His comeback started off strong in the ratings but it was smack dab in the middle of the OJ trial which urban legends say was the downfall of daytime TV due to pre-emption. I personally thought the show had life and should have been renewed for the 1995-96 season.
Actually, I don't think he needed to work after that point. He was 63. He appears to have had a pretty good life and he left Gretchen and Shannon in very good shape financially after his death in 2012. He may have just thought that two runs as host were enough.
The world of game shows was not the place to be in the 90s… everyone wanted to watch tabloid talk shows! If you weren’t The Price Is Right, Jeopardy or Wheel of Fortune, you were toast. All other daytime game shows had been cancelled by the time Feud ‘94 started. Game shows made a comeback in Primetime in the late 90s.
There are all kinds of reasons people defer marriage. He had a heartbreaking first marriage and said publicly that the divorce left him shattered emotionally. He may have been reluctant to commit again; I think it's telling that he only remarried after his daughter was born. He clearly adored Shannon AND Gretchen. He was exceptionally devoted to his kids, having gained full custody of his older sons when they were tiny. Their mother had moved back to England by the time they were 2 and 4, leaving Richard and the boys in LA. He raised them as a single father, which was very unusual in the 1960s. (And still is, frankly!)
As a 70's child, Dawson will always be the best Family Feud host.
Richard had amazing knowledge of the United States, he never ceased to amaze me. Miss you R.D. truly one of a kind ..
Miss this sweet soul. We watch him on re-runs of the Match game. God Bless. RIP
I still remember the original family feud. From those fancy lollipop trees to the folks from Botany 500. RIP Richard.
Dawson was the best host of Feud.
Survey Said, "BAAAAMMMMM!!!!"
For sure.
Way ahead of his time in terms of comedic talent.. His humor still holds up very well today
Him and Steve Harvey are tied for #1
By far
Richard, use to be a regular on Laugh In. HE was the man on Match Game. He is and will always be the man on Family Feud.
RIP Go make god. Giggle.
I didn't know he was on Laugh In. 🤷🏻♀️
I love this! He just liked her from the start! Loved watching!
It will be 10 years this June since we lost this marvelous man.
R.I.P. Richard, the Freud will never be the same without you.
Thanks for this tribute Wink. First time seeing Richard's Tonight Show appearance since '94.
Thank you for posting this gem Mr. WiNk!
What a treasure man
He still looked good there.
i love to hear his love story andhow he meant his wife, now have a very cute daughter(when this was film ). I just love to hear about people who have a happy family life.
Richard Dawson is no doubt the greatest Family Feud host ever, R.I.P. Richard Dawson!!
Superb, Thank You!!

The Feud was never the same after Richard.
P.S. Mad respect to Ray Combs. He held his own with Richard. Sorry Steve...my kids like the classics best.
Rip Richard Dawson 1932-2012
May he rest in peace
Miss you Richard
Damn I miss Richard. 🙏
Loved him!
He was incredibly brilliant and suffered no fools.
Richard Dawson was the best Family Feud host ever!!!
RIP Dear Richard!
6:22 1970’s and 1980’s Wheel of Fortune buzzer.
That lovely lady in the white gown is Heather Locklear!

T-Bone Hubbard The name rings a bell. Is she the same person who appeared on a Scrabble theme week?

The kissing Bandit! We love you Dickie!!
What a great guy, Richard you were a class act Sir!
Rip Richard Dawson
Loved Richard God bless him RIP
Thank u!!!
You were asked who was the best game show host for Family Feud you said Richard Dawson SURVEY SAID (DING) 💯
Ray Combs was 2nd!
I loved Richard Dawson rip❤
Such a lovely man
6:22 I got a kick out of the strike buzzer they used. It was the 1980s "wrong letter" buzzer from Wheel of Fortune!
"Styrofoam... uh... Hat!"
(Buzzer)

As Bob Hope used to say: "I lovvvve it!"
I always loved Richard Dawson!!!!!! (2020)
Between “Hogan’s Heroes” and “Match Game,” Richard Dawson appeared on “I’ve Got A Secret” with host Steve Allen.
Also on another June 2 (June 2, 1996) we lost Ray Combs.
That's very ironic.
Lupton2000 same day, wasn't it?
I love Richard, but Ray Combs was the best host of Family Fued. He brought so much energy and excitement to the show, and always looked like he was having a great time. Still, both Richard and Ray couldn't be replaced and anyone who followed were simply pale imitations.
He committed suicide
@@jayanxietyFeud*
This is a fascinating clip because that story should be absolutely hilarious.
I would have said because he misses hosting it and we miss seeing him!
I love Richard Dawson, but damn, putting him back on Family Feud literally killed poor Ray Combs. RIP Ray...
And even Dawson's return couldn't save Family Feud, as it was cancelled entirely within the year.
@@SchuminWeb Dawson seemed to lose his quick witted comedic ability on his return. Marriage really toned him down I guess

do you think if leaving the feud to die out after Combs' final episode, Combs would've stayed alive?
@@michaelangst6078Along with his weight gain.
The 1988 host of the You Bet Your Life pilot with the future host of You Bet Your Life.
Great guy. I respect your privacy. He was the best.
Definitely the best host of Family Feud.
Cam't forget about Damon Killian from The Running Man.
GamerZero shame he had to be the bad guy in that movie.
Dawson was so good he stole the film out from Schwarzenegger.
Best tv game show host ever, Richard your simply the best and we miss you!!
Richard was no stranger to the Tonight Show. He filled in for Johnny several times in 1979 to 1980. Funny guy.
I'm glad he came back, but he should have just stayed retired he looks really tired already. Rest in peace Mr Dawson you really missed these days
Aww I didn’t know he passed away so sad 😞
1975 because of the pilot too but 1975 to 1995 of FAMILY FEUD
Survey says
The 2nd, blond contestant bore a striking similarity to his wife at a younger age.
By the time he came back, it was too late
Best game show host ever

What were answers 4 and 5?
Even though he was a bit egotistical and sometimes a bit rude he was still the best Family Feud host.
Dawson WAS/IS The Feud!!
I remembered watching Richard Dawson on the short lived revival of “I’ve Got A Secret” which he did between “Hogan’s Heroes” and “Match Game.”
Dawson was the ONLY host of Family Feud....
Because I wanted to do it again before it gets canceled the next day
Old school Wheel of Fortune/Bullseye buzzer for the win!
He sounds so American
Diana Dors.
Smoking 3 packs a day would kill anyone.
I would be tempted to say, to improve the ratings...
I always thought Richard Dawson and the actor Robert Shaw can pass for brothers.
I agree with the comments
"Because you didn't want to get a real job" was a great line.
"I promised Shannon"? Who's Shannon??
His daughter.
September 8, 1994.
Did he ever get the show back? 🤔
For a year.
lol
So Johnny had Ray on, Jay had Richard on, will Fallon have Steve Harvey on?
he has
Yeah, just a few weeks ago.
Other options, Louis Anderson, Richard Kearns and John O' Hurley.
I don't get the subtle hint that marrying a contestant is somehow wrong...He met her through his job big deal??? what is wrong with that?
Who's the blonde with curly hair?
Heather Locklear
So if my math is correct , Richard married Gretchen in 1981 and 9 years later they had Shannon Nicole Dawson . Wonder Why it tOok so lOng , hmmm ?
Cause he's an old man whose been working so long and needed time to actually enjoy life with his wife who he is obviously head over heels for.
Richard met Gretchen in 1981, they didn’t marry until 1991.
