Richard Dawson left to host Family Feud. He was a phenomenal panelist. I love Gene Rayburn, Brett, Charles, Richard & Betty. They all had a chemistry that no other game show had. Till this day December 26 2020 no show can every be compared to Match Game. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
No he has been hosting family feud for years. He left because they put the star wheel in that he took as a insult. Because he was always the guy called on the show. The other stars lobbied for it! He quit!
@@mikeandrews2851He was doing Family Feud for a solid 2 years before he left Match Game, but also he left not just because of the Star wheel, but because he was doing both the daytime Family Feud and syndicated Version. He became burnt out also. Lastly, the dude won a daytime Emmy for Family Feud that year so he definitely was at the top of his game.
Macintosh gene always treated him well n laughed at his corny jokes so I doubt gene Rayburn treated him bad or was jealous Richard was a narcissistic asshole I'm glad he left he wanted too much attention n camera time n he always wanted to kiss the women on there lips he's creepy
Gene kissed women on the lips too. Okay, they were primarily the celebrity panelists, but still...I loved Gene. I am not trying to talk about him. I doubt very much that women contestants disliked Richard's kisses. They adored Richard. It was a different time...
It wasn't so much Richard's ego as his competitiveness. He was playing to win first, for laughs second. Rayburn and most of the panelists were trying to be funny - and to hell with the poor contestants. He had a hard time with that, and sometimes he could be passive aggressive about it. I'm with Richard, frankly.
Ma B Richard Dawson honestly seemed to big for the show by this time. Him starring in Family Feud which was the most popular daytime game show at the time in its 2nd season and was popular for almost 10 years, plus he hosted the Emmy awards that year 1978, plus won for Outstanding Game Show Host. He was definitely riding high on success at that time.
The stars... All or most seemed to hate Richard, especially Charles the most. If you've watched a zillion episodes such as myself, you'll notice Charles doesn't like him but the hatred facial looks if Richard talks to him. And Charles and Brette were always pissed Richard was called for bonus round. It made them look stupid, and were regulars. Reason why they changed the game to a spin the wheel for star in bonus round. Richard obviously deserved his own game show as a host. Nobody else on the match game achieved it.

Dawson is not that good on many locations... he gets chosen on many times...just every contestants believe he is the best.. he just gets chosen so he just wants to kiss every female contestants believing he will win...why in the hell Match Game picks 6 celebrities when only one specific (ie Dawson) gets chosen? I’m glad he is dead because I don’t miss him... he just wants to miss every female contestants... look at Family Feud!!!
They all tried, but Richard was just a little bit more tuned in. And yes, he was more successful than most at matching contestants. NOBODY matched anyone 100% of the time. That would have been erie.
Love match game my favorite game show. Richard Dawson was the most popular star on the panel most contestants would pick him for the audience match and for the super match
As much as I loved the Match Game as a kid growing up in the 70's, I thought it would have been poetic justice to have the star wheel land on Dawson's slot on the wheel on his last day on the show and as a double money hit. The first time they used that wheel it did land on Richards section of the wheel and I can only imagine the sound of screams from the producers of MG that it landed on Richard. Richard Dawson was the best on match game and Family Fued and he is missed. RIP Richard Dawson.
AND HE ALWAYS WANTED THE CONTESTANT TO WIN. IT SHOWED. BRETT REALLY DID TOO AND WOULD GET SO NERVOUS WHEN PICKED FOR THE SUPER MATCH. SHE DID NOT WANT TO LOSE FOR THE CONTESTANT AND SHE ACTUALLY WON FOR THEM QUITE OFTEN.
Richard is very quiet during this episode wearing dark gradient sunglasses. I think he knew it was his last episode. I’m not sure about anyone else on the stage.
I think he was exhausted. Taping 6 shows of Match Game, 5 daytime shows of Family Feud and 1 or 2 nighttime Feud's, plus other things he might have been doing, would make anyone totally wiped out.
The only reason I watched match game is because of Richard Dawson, without him the show just wasn’t the same. R. I. P. to a wonderful and funny man! You’ll always be missed!
I watched this the first time around but as I’m randomly watching them on UA-cam I think one of the reasons it was so possible is it’s one game show you can pretty much play along with 100%. You can make your own answers and keep track of what your score would be, unlike other shows.

There IS a new version with Alec Baldwin as the host. He's no Gene Rayburn, but he's ok. It's on Wednesday nights at 10pm Eastern Time on Channel 7 (ABC)
It came back with Alec Baldwin as host. I don't know any of the Stars they're all young people with weird hair and dress weird and the questions are ridiculous hey what do you expect for over 40 years later
It was always disappointing to me when the "celebrity's' would give dopey answers as if to deny the contestant any chance of matching. It was not fair.
I felt also that the questions sometimes were paired unfairly too. Like one would have like only one real answer and match all 6 and then the other question would have a many good answer and get a spread in answers.
The clue was "Thanks for", and Brett just said "thanks a million"; I'm surprised that they didn't tell her to change her answer, since it didn't actually fit the clue. Anyway, when Richard says "thanks for the memories", it was appropriate for him to say that since this was his final show, I wonder if Richard intended it that way, like a way of saying goodbye or something.
I heard he wanted more money cause he thought he was the star of the show n tried using FF as a reason to get paid more n match game said NO your easily replaceable there are actual celebrities with talen who can take your place so being greedy bit him in the ass
I know its been discussed many times here but this is really the short end of it. Family Feud at this point was the number one rated daytime TV show, the former of which Match Game was. Call it ego if you'd like but Richard was more focussed in being the star of his show then being a mere panelist on another show. Some birds are just too big for the nest especially when they got a bigger nest elsewhere. Also MG's ratings started gradually slipping in 1977 after MG changed time slots. I don't know for sure if that had an effect on Richard wanting to leave but its possible. No sense remaining on a show thats losing viewers when you're the star of a show that has the most viewers. And yes Richard himself has admitted he felt slighted by the Star Wheel and who could blame him? Richard had very good ESP with the contestants and played for the logic of the game most times but much of that was taken away when the wheel was added. He also later remarked he grew disenchanted with the shows questions and honestly how many years can you take in writing 'boobs', 'tinkle', 'rear end', 'toidy', etc. and its still funny??
All that work on so many shows, or even one show, would tire just about anyone. He needs the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he was so tired and that was the reason for the glasses
Dawson was getting tired of Match Game and was hosting Family Feud. He mainly felt very snubbed by the use of the Star wheel which took the contestants choice of who to pick away. Many contestants picked Dawson.
Yes but his attitude had been noticeably shifting even prior to the wheel. Check out episodes 1173, 1187, 1226 to see what I mean. Also the first few Wheel episodes Richard still seemed in good spirits until I think the fact that he wasn't gonna be the celebrity of choice anymore for that portion of the game and the fact that FF was a success convinced him his MG days were coming to an end.
Mike Peterson Actually 12 since there was a nighttime FF. Also like MG I'm sure they would shoot 6 episodes of FF in a one day period. I know that theyd shoot 10 (12 if they were doing nighttime) episodes of MG over a weekend. Not sure the FF schedule.
Brett Somers says in her interview on the Best of Match Game DVD set that they'd film 5 episodes on Saturday (I assume 6 if they did PM), 5/6 on Sunday and they broke for two weeks before coming back to film more. Family Feud was likely dome in a similar fashion.
I've been watching all of the match game episodes again on Buzzr. Richard started decreasing his banter with Gene and the other cast members in 1977, and by early 1978 had became emotionless and eliminated all banter except for a few words with Gene and quietly speaking to whoever was sitting next to him. He mostly stopped engaging the camera during the episode openings in 78, usually covering his face or looking down when they called his name. Wagging his finger (as he did in this episode) was the most you could get out of him. In the last month or two Gene stopped trying to engage him at all and he hardly if ever spoke out loud other than to repeat whatever he wrote on his card. However, throughout all of this he always tried his best to match the contestants, so he deserves credit for that. I'm surprised they kept him on as long as they did, he didn't really contribute anything to the entertainment value of the show for the last year or so.
As they were treating him like mud on their shoes Richard Dawson deserves an Emmy Golden Globe A Huge Thank You 💋 plus a $ percentage for Keeping MG a ratings Success!
He had to do 5 Match Games and 1 syndicated MG PM a week as well as 5 syndicated Family Feuds a week so most accounts of him being tired are most likely true.
crissrudd4554 In 1978, only one syndicated Family Feud was being produced per week. It wouldn’t be a nightly series until 1980. Dawson was doing 12 episodes a week.
5 years so what that's nothing it's not like he was there 25 years n MG was glad he was going he wanted more money he was greedy n they didn't cave n meet his demands they were happy to let him go
@@joylessmann5171 The biggest reasons he left like he did was because he had his own show, he was burned out from doing both, and biggest of all, the other panelists were jealous of the attention he always got. Brett said in an interview later on that sometimes when he got the super match wrong some of them would do a golf clap because he wasn't the hero. Then they brought in the wheel so everyone had a chance of playing, which he felt was a shot at him, personally. He had enough, tuned out and eventually the heads asked him if he wanted out.
Richard Dawson was a very smart guy he did get some questions wrong but no one is perfect and on family feud he was the best host they every had he seemed like a very nice guy and he was funny too rip Richard Dawson you will live on foreever🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘maiden manic
@@cynthiaennis3107 It was because he was upset that CBS wouldn't let him out of his contract. He wanted to leave Match Game so he could host Family Feud. So he pouted and eventually CBS relented and let him go before his contract ran out.
Not one word that it was his final episode? That kind of sums up his experience on the show. He displayed not just boredom but clinical depression on many of the shows in the latter years. I'm glad that he got his own show to better fit his life.
The way Ira Skutch tells it in "Behind the Blank" Richard was ready to leave yesterday, and the producers just asked him to finish the night. "Afterwards he just left, didn't even say goodbye to anyone just left". I don't think he would have wanted people to know he was leaving (or cared at that point) he just walked off the job. If he gave advance notice they could have set him up with a nice goodbye, but he didn't do that.
@@joshuasmith6439 it was fairly well-known that Richard Dawson had become very difficult to work with on "Match Game" by this time. He seemed bored at best, and volatile at worst. There are episodes leading up to this where Gene and the other panelists seem to walk on eggshells around Richard. Here's an example: ua-cam.com/video/WmJXaNasQ84/v-deo.html
I mentioned this on another Match Game video where Dawson went ballistic. As time went on from about '76 to '78, Dawson became more and more intent on getting out of his Match Game day and PM contract. He felt his time was being overstretched with his other TV series Family Feud. This might have something to do with his attitude and the annoyed tone of voice.
By this point FF had eclipsed MG as the top rated game show. MG's ratings were also gradually slipping after the show's time slot had been moved back the previous year causing it to lose much of its viewers. The network did eventually move it back to its original time but it was too late. CBS cancelled the show a year later and it continued in syndication until 1982. Richard's mood on MG was also noticeably deteriorating on MG even before the Star Wheel was added. His heart just wasnt in it anymore. Even looking at him here, the show is more a chore for him at this stage than pure entertainment. He finally found the success he yearned for and wanted to move on. Much of the panel had grown annoyed of his being the go to person during the big money rounds and unlike on FF Richard did not have the control over the rules on MG.
Well not matching his comments that should of been he was getting sick and tired of the judges so if it were me I would her some what cold towards them!!!!!! There was several episodes when they seemed to be going out of their way to piss him off!!
I always thought that, myself! Glad I am not the only one... Knowing Scoey Mitchell, I am surprised he didn't make a joke about it when he was on the show...
No matter his attitude, ego,or whatever: he always played for the contestant and fought for them occasionally. Sorry on the terms he left, Richard was a smart and entertaining panelist (on every game show he was on) who moved on to bigger and better things. R.I.P. Richard
I remember watching this game when I came home from school because my father was watching it. I remember it was match game 74 and the next year it was called match game 75.
Dawson used to smoke almost four packs of cigarettes per day, and was seen smoking on some episodes of Match Game, Family Feud and multiple episodes of Hogan's Heroes. R.I.P.
Richard always looked like he had a few cocktails in him. Same on Feud. But he was still decent. I do think that pouting and wearing those shades was a bit much. Not cool.
He would have undoubtedly been wiped out,but it had more to do with losing his spotlight after they implemented the Star Wheel because that meant he would have only been selected if the wheel landed on his name.To be honest with you,I'm surprised CBS even let Richard Dawson be on a competing network at the same time he was doing Match Game.
You can Tell Richard Wasn't into it like always..but rumor was him doing this and Family Feud was getting to him...Plus he always had issues on this show...Still going to be Greatly Missed
It is hard to pick, because I grew up watching this show. I was very young now 64. This is hard to believe it was only 2012? I would say older, but not my video LOL
Damn...Richard Dawson's last Match Game showed little love for anyone...it's telling that the ONLY real luck found was when he went WITH Richard Dawson's answer in Super Match...but then he went with CNR's answer on the second Super Match and $250...😑
Now retired, I’m seeing these reruns during the day and love the silly wine-at-lunch repartee. However, Richard got in a twist the third year, jealous of the attention Gene got as host since Richard was the reason people watched. Gets uncomfortable. He wanted to quit and they wouldn’t let him. He felt trapped. He did NOT want a send off.

Mike Peterson Actually 12 since there was a nighttime FF. Also like MG I'm sure they would shoot 6 episodes of FF in a one day period. I know that theyd shoot 10 (12 if they were doing nighttime) episodes of MG over a weekend. Not sure the FF schedule.
crissrudd4554 From what I heard, they would shoot all of match game in one day, including PM, and family feud in one day as well.
Brett Somers says in her interview on the Best of Match Game DVD set that they'd film 5 episodes on Saturday (I assume 6 if they did PM), 5/6 on Sunday and they broke for two weeks before coming back to film more. Family Feud was likely dome in a similar fashion.
He was burned out. He gave his all to this show, though. RIP.
Succinct and accurate.
What a difference from his behavior on the show in the early/mid 70's. He really looked like he didn't want to be there.
As they were treating him like mud on their shoes Richard Dawson deserves an Emmy Golden Globe A Huge Thank You 💋 plus a $ percentage for Keeping MG a ratings Success!
I know I am late to the party but he did not need to be there by that time. His show was number 1 by that time.
The best ever game show celebrity or host. Rayburn a close second
This was the best, Richard Dawson was the best.
An Ep per day or night. Weren’t shows taped in bundles?
I'm sure he WAS tired.
@@vamsm It became nightly in 79 actually, was twice a week by this point I believe.
They would tape five shows in one day!
R.I.P. Richard Dawson
eve though richard didnt want to be there still i think richard stood should have gotten a proper sendoff after al he gave match game 5 years
5 years so what that's nothing it's not like he was there 25 years n MG was glad he was going he wanted more money he was greedy n they didn't cave n meet his demands they were happy to let him go
probably right. no a big dawson fan but they should have done or said something...
Absolutely. Post-Dawson is pretty bad. He's got an uncanny way with the contestants (unlike Joyce, for example).
joyless Mann was he greedy or were the producers cheap? Studios we're notoriously tight-fisted back in the day!
Nice guy? HELL NO. He was an arrogant asshole.
@5:23...lol, Joyce really didn't get it did she?!😂
He was an icon , I miss him so much
RIP Gene Rayburn and Richard Dawson :-(
And everyone else. Lol.

True,he was smart! And played the best💟💟 and cared for all contestant So!
Mr Dawson did not take any crap. From what I have seen he was very kind but never take kindness for weakness. R.I.P Mr Dawson.
Richard seems so removed...like he would rather be anywhere else but there.
jo tripodi Well...it was his last show. Maybe he was sad about it as he would be leaving his buddies.
@@cynthiaennis3107 It was because he was upset that CBS wouldn't let him out of his contract. He wanted to leave Match Game so he could host Family Feud. So he pouted and eventually CBS relented and let him go before his contract ran out.
Totally.....the dark sunglasses say it all.
@@michaelbares2228 he wore the sunglasses on family fued at this time too. He was having an issue with his eye
@@oldiesgeek454 Him and Gene had a falling out as well.
@Dennis Divine agreed and it had built up for almost the last 6 months leading up to that.
dawson should of received a good send off after he left the show
I don't think he would have wanted it.
Dawson cracked no jokes, spoke no words besides his answers. What a sad day.
um, he's the one who wanted to leave!
@@kristabrewer6736 and?
Wow, you could see that Richard is not his usual jovial self in this one. It's palpable.
He was mad they added the star wheel.True fact!
Bittersweet day. He'd worked with Gene and everybody there since 1973. After hundreds of episodes, he wasn't going to be on the show anymore.
Most of those celebs were not even trying or understood the goal.
Barnabas Collins no one supposedly knew this was his last episode, not him nor the other panelists.
The pattern of the blue lights on the red background behind Brett looks like the Confederate flag.
Kind of ironic that the last words Richard Dawson said on this show were, "Thanks for the memories."
@@robinbertsch2585 Bob Hope.
Why is it ironic?
@@christianhafer9819 Cause it was his last show, aka was a farewell of sorts.
Was never the same show after Richard left.
It was better
When they brought the wheel, it killed the show.
@@lawranew5125 The opposite. It was worse.
Crossing his fingers was something he usually if not always did whenever a contest chose his response for the audience match.
crissrudd4554 we did it for luck as children.
It's funny to see how much they win on the older game shows compare to now !
Not cool.
This has always been my favorite game show, and Richard Dawson was my all time favorite panelist, and game show Host. Dicky was looking Sexy 😎🔥🔥🔥🥰
Same production company, different networks. It happened all the time. Actors weren't contracted to the networks.
The good old days when we had prime time game shows. Hell I don’t even know if we have any game shows anymore.
Dawson was being a spoiled brat, but he WAS the only celeb who played the game well and genuinely wanted the contestants to win.
i'm kinda glad i matched Dawson with big macs
May you rest in peace Richard dawson
Gene Rayburn on playing Old Man Periwinkle, whenever theirs a caption on him,Gene did it well, and hilarious, feet shuffling ,slow voice.
Yes he did. That's because he wanted the contestants to win. It doesn't fit with "not giving a ****."
Rip Gene and company. Only match game episodes I will watch.
I just watched the one where Burt Reynolds was on and they asked the same question about the revolving door.
Me too.
I just watched the new match game with Alec Baldwin and they asked the same question. False teeth had the most matches.
I don’t like the one with Alec Baldwin, it is not the same!

McLean Stevenson took over Dawson's spot in the syndication version in 1981 or 82.
Lorrie Mahaffey....she was Potsie's GF onHappy Days. MMMMM she was a cutie.
They should show all the shows from 1973 to 1982.
Robert Manini you can see them all on Prime.
