- After ten long years, I revive my Power Rangers/Super Sentai comparison videos. This time, we're going to go super in-depth and look at the opening episodes of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Kyouryuu Sentai Zyuranger. How do they differ? Which makes the more effective introduction?

Every time I hear the 8-bit version of the Zyuranger opening theme It reminds me of the AVGN singing it.
One thing I didn't notice until I was an adult, watching the show using higher quality DVDs on an HDTV, is that there's a clear difference in visual quality between the American and Japanese footage. Anytime the show switches to sentai footage, it suddenly gets a lot more grainy looking.
Ah the memorable theme from 8-bit game I played a lot as a child. I just accepted its a japanese Power Rangers game, only wondered why Zordon is not a hologram.

Ah, good to be back to familiar territory. This is an interesting series idea, and I'm hoping to see more. I'd suggest either grouping plots to do several in one video, or just focusing on story beats, like Green with Evil compared to Burai as a whole.

I've been watching your videos since I was a child, with those videos being some of my favorites and most rewatched. Seeing you revisiting this topic now with greater detail is filling me with the same intrigue and wonder as it did back then! Can't wait to see more!
Zyuranger's one of the sentai I've never got around to, so this is interesting to see. I feel like much like it's understandable why PR ended up so rushed, it's kind of understandable why they gave Geki this big dramatic fated buildup thing--he's the cool hero guy all the kids are supposed to talk about this year, so let's present him like an Event.
Anyway, while I'm definitely down for more of this, if you're ever thinking of casting the net further personally I think the production around the adaptation of Gingaman into Lost Galaxy is really interesting--and both of those are super-solid shows to boot.

Cool. I hope you continue. I really enjoyed your previous videos on both series all those years back. I re-watched Zyuranger I think a year back. It's still mostly rough around the edges, and towards the end gets super nutty (as any 90's Sentai should). While I like the Power Rangers story more, Zyuranger does have a lot more footage that you get to see. I go back and forth on what is the better experience.

I'm really curious to see/hear your interpretations on where both shows go from here, especially since you seem to be giving both a fair shake and emphasizing what they're individually going for.
I'd certainly be happy with some more story by story comparisons. Like yourself Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was my childhood and I'm a big fan of Zyuranger even if it wasn't my first Super Sentai (that would be Gekiranger).
I also enjoy your videos as I always keep my eyes open for the newest episode of Dragon ball Dissection, though I did actually become aware of your channel through your old Super Sentai/Power Rangers comparison episodes.
So even though I have not watched Power Rangers in a lot of years as I opted to just watch Super Sentai and Kamen Rider, it'll be nice to enjoy looking at the comparisons and maybe feeling a bit of the nostalgia in the process.
I loved Power Rangers when I was a kid, but after I discovered Super Sentai, I kinda find it way more enjoyable. The lore is more engaging.

So I have never watched Power Rangers or any Super Sentai show in my life, and honestly I don't know if I will, not because it's bad, it just doesn't interest me much and I still have a long list of shows I want to catch up on and binge through. However, maybe it's because of how much I love the DBD videos, I decided to try watching something non DB related, and I really enjoyed it!
I guess I just wanted to say I'm really happy that over time you've become a content creator that I'll watch even if the content isn't necessarily aimed at me. Keep up the great work!

I'm finally taking time to catch up and watch these episodes. I'm thrilled that you decided to analyze every episode with it's counterpart to see who did it better. I admit, going in, my thought was, "since Zyuranger did it first, shouldn't it automatically win?" but seeing how you're comparing them, I really like this concept. When I was a kid, I saw the first episode of MMPR and wasn't that impressed, honestly. The fights were weird and didn't make much sense to me at the time (and still don't to this day, honestly). This just seemed really lame to me at the time, but I'll get into what brought me back when I get there lol
son i knew they used stock footage from zyuranger my friend had a japanese tape of zyuranger i was 9 in 1993 her cousin did drawings of witch bandora's gang that is how i knew they used stock footage i recorded the first episode of mmpr on vhs from fox kids and later watched it i laughed so hard at it glad i only saw the pilot episode of mmpr huge sentai fan zyuranger is a great sentai

When I had first discovered Super Sentai, I think it was the scene where Geki, Boi, and Mei found Burai dying on the beach. There were no subtitles on the video, so I didn't know what the plot was. I also didn't know how different Zyuranger was so watching the actual series gave me a better understanding. I had attempted to watch all of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers on UA-cam from the beginning to get a better idea about Power Rangers compared to what I remember seeing as a kid, but copyright take downs got in the way. But at the time, there were full uploads of the Zyuranger episodes, so I went ahead and watched through all those. Of course those episodes aren't up anymore for copyright reasons, but now we have the DVD releases and I happen to have Zyuranger on DVD along with the six subsequent series as well as it's predecessor, Jetman. The original opening of MMPR with Rita saying "It's Time To Conquer Earth" just feels so nostalgic in my opinion. Zyuranger seems much more legendary to me, kind of like a Legend of Zelda game or something. The opening story of Zyuranger went a bit slowly with it's story, but I suppose since fans watching at the time had seen Super Sentai before, they didn't need a lot of those key elements introduced all at one time. I makes sense Power Rangers would do it since this was the beginning for Power Rangers.
Finally got around to watching this and of course I was impressed. I'm glad I can expect such great work and effort and love from this channel! Can't wait to keep up with this from now on!

Fair but waaaaay to often PR takes toned down themes from Sentai without anything in exchange.
First 5 seasons really drop interesting stuff and what they replace it with isn't that great.
Sadly right now Super Sentai is dropping in ratings slowly turning itself to footage for PR to adapt.

I wish I could say it's for no other reason than because it's just that good. I mean, I do think it's pretty good. The sad truth is that, after the first Wonder Woman video had such a long title, and that a whole year had passed since I covered the first entry, that I went with what I thought was a straight, bold, and to-the-point title. "Wonder Woman... Part 2!" Finally! The follow-up to my previous Wonder Woman video! All 100 of my subscribers would love it!
What I didn't realize, though, is that tons of non-subscribers saw that title combined with a non-custom thumbnail (since I wouldn't have access to them for another four years), and, in the days of 10-15 minute UA-cam uploads, assumed it was the second segment of an upload of the movie itself.

MistareFusion Zyuranger is a great sentai huge sentai fan not a fan of power rangers , here is the plot for the birth episode of dinosaur squad zyuranger, At an apartment complex known as the Sakura Condominium, an old man is sweeping the ground greeting the kids who leave for the day and telling them to study. As he does, a news report reveals that a space shuttle that had launched from Earth the previous day is now in the orbit of the planet Nemesis as it approaches after an orbit of 230 million years. The shuttle is not only approaching the planet but contains two child astronauts, Satoru Yoshimura & Yumiko Nishida; Yumiko notes to Satoru their approach to Nemesis as Satoru marvels at the world. The shuttle enters into Nemesis' orbit with ease; but on Earth the old man races up as he overhears the landing as his ear turns into a pointed one.
Upon the planet, the astronauts see nothing on the world, understanding how it's a wasteland. Suddenly, they spy a red glimmer far in the dunes which they rush to investigate. The duo discover a large canister and investigate as the gem glows; one touches it even as the old man yells that this is "the seal" and they shouldn't open it; but they do, releasing an army of creatures from within: an orc named Bookback, a vampire named Totpat, a leprechaun named Pleprechaun and a griffon named Grifforzer. Bookback yells for "Bandora" to awaken, revealing a witch who had just woken as if from a nap. When asking how long she was asleep, Totpat and Bookback argue over the calculator as Pleprechaun yells at them for always doing this; totpat calculates that Bandora was out for 170 million years, 4 hours, 3 minutes and 20 seconds. Angry that the seal kept her out for so long, Bandora shoots the canister, scaring the astronauts while noticing they were the ones who rescued her, breathing a harsh breath towards them throwing them off the planet. Bandora turns to the sky and notices her old home of Earth stating that she has returned for her revenge after 170 million years.
On Earth, the people notice a skyscraper suddenly moving through the streets shocking them as it wrecks the ground below them and chases away the office workers. Several other buildings likewise move until they come together in an alignment as the Tower Building flies into space to the shock of the news reporters until it comes down with a massive castle on top of the skyscraper: the "Bandora Palace". The news reporter continues to report, stating the structure looks like Gaudi's Sagrada Familia in Barcelona until Bandora and Grifforzer emerge, the witch laughing manically and declaring to humanity that she is the most powerful witch of all time and she'll turn the Earth into a desolate wasteland; a "stupid rock". Bandora declares humanity as stupid in believing in love and they should hate and kill each other to their own destruction before firing her wand at buildings destroying it. Spying the old man from the Sakura Condominium, Bandora greets him after a long time as the "White Wizard Barza", forcing him to transform into his true sage form and attempt to attack her; but Bandora reminds Barza that she defeated him and stole his spells; before using a hose and wrapping it around the sage and turning it into a snake. Barza breaks it and Bandora compliments him for still keeping some magic as the sage states the Earth is filled with love and hope and this isn't a world for her. However Bandora mocks him stating that she still has the two children and the space shuttle as the kids yell out while Tottopack and Bookback set them up under a trap to be smashed by a weighted ball. Bookback is instructed to move a magnifier in front of a rope to let it burn to smash the kids with the ball as Bandora declares she hates children to Barza. She declares that in an hour the rope will snap and the children will be squashed while challenging Barza to come and stop her and disappearing.
Angered by Bandora's challenge, Barza enters into an elevator at his complex and remarks he has secret weapons to use as well. Pressing several buttons in the elevator, he heads downwards until he hits 100 floors beneath the surface, revealing a huge ancient temple with statues to the great guardian dinosaurs. Barza declares to the statues that it is time to awaken the ancient warriors and that justice will defeat evil and restore peace to Earth. Entering into another chamber, he searches for a key and opens up the chambers for each warrior who had been resting in sealed slabs before reawakening and appearing in the real world: the black knight of the Sharma Tribe, Goushi; the yellow knight of the Dime Tribe, Boi; the pink princess of the Lithia Tribe, Mei & the blue knight of the Etoffe Tribe, Dan. Barza heads to awaken the final, Red member but the key breaks, forcing the others to worry about needing to do something for their last member. Goushi and Boi charge to open the door while Barza worries about saving the two children; telling the Zyuranger to save them while he handles the final warrior. Meanwhile, Yumiko cries as the weight draws closer to the children as Satoru tries to calm her and Bandora mocks them to cry, stating she loves listening to their cries. Bookback informs the witch that weirdoes are approaching, which Bandora identifies as knights of the five tribes as they charge towards the castle. Bandora notes that they were sleeping waiting for her return.
The knights approach Bandora Castle charging in, but appear by the ocean without warning. Without warning, small gray creatures pop out of the ground. The creatures seem to play around as they're identified as mud dolls before slamming the Rangers. Bandora appears as a picture from the ocean and zaps the four knights before firing an electric attack and casting them away as Barza continues to try and reopen the last knight's tomb. The knights end up in a cityscape locked in a cage as they yell for their escape while Totpat and Bookback torment them and alight fire to cook them. Goushi tells Mei to shoot an arrow out of the cage, which seems to miss as the rope holding the weight burns, making the children more scared. Totpat spins the cage to cook the Rangers as time nearly runs out and Barza continues to fret. However without warning, beams emerge from the Guardian Beast's eyes and hit the tyrannosaur door, opening it as the knight immediately leaps out and frees his partners from the cage in Bandora's castle. Totpat asks his name and he introduces himself as Geki, prince of the Yamato Tribe. As Geki frees them, Grifforzer swoops down to attack throwing them aside as the five knights take on the Golems in the room. Grifforzer attacks Geki as Barza yells at the five to come outside and transform with the medals that he has for them, throwing them towards the castle as they catch them and fall down towards the ground, combining them with their Dino Bucklers and transforming into the Zyuranger: Geki the Tyrannoranger, Goushi the Mammothranger, Dan the Triceraranger, Boi the Tigerranger and Mei the Pteraranger.
Once transformed, Grifforzer and the Golems attack once again, the team fighting them even as they continue to reform with their defeats. In the castle, Satoru and Yumiko continue to cower at their pending doom; while outside, Grifforzer continues to attack Geki. Using his Ranger sword, Geki slashes at the griffin while instructing Dan and Mei to save the children. As the ball continues to fall, Dan throws Mei into the air as the ball falls, allowing her to grab the shuttle and save the children. But without warning, a giant hand bursts through the castle, throwing the two Zyuranger off and grabbing the shuttle! Dan and Mei yell at it to return the shuttle as the giant, known as Dora Titan, stares down at them. Geki wonders what the creature is as Dora Titan attacks the Zyuranger before vanishing, making the Rangers worried.

And I did remember seeing Footage of Barza in the viewing globe since the first time I've watched Power Rangers back in the days in the Episode where Billy and Kimberly are punks.
By the way, Mao Ichimichi who played Luka/Gokai Yellow from Gokaiger ended up voice acting for Anime starting with Digimon Tri.
Currently she's doing Lorna's voice from Monster Girl Doctor.
I only found out about Zyuranger and the Super Sentai Franchise in 2011 the same year Gokaiger was currently broadcasting.

The command center is the Brandeis Bardin Campus of American Jewish University. It was also used for the Lore building in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Descent." It's weird architecture makes it a perfect Sci-Fi building. The big comparison to do is with how both series handled the Green Ranger. It's confusing how the Rangers lost their Zords in one episode and they are suddenly back in the next. It's also weird why Jason is fighting alone as the Tyrannosaurus before they later decide to merge into the MegaZord then MegaZord is suddenly beating down on DragonZord really hard. The answer is that the Juurangers weren't actually piloting the Guardian Beasts and Daijuujin was actually beating down Dragon Caesar because he was angry (In Juuranger, the Zord equivalents are alive and their combined form Daijuujin can talk). It's also confusing as to why the characters summon their Zords against the Green Ranger when they were told not to escalate a battle unless necessary. That was because Daijuujin actually came on his own to talk down to Burai and if you look at the footage, you can see MegaZord moving around in the shot where Daijuujin was talking to Burai, except it's just silent.
Not into power rangers at all but I knew that school was used in a lot of movies and tv shows over the years 📼
To be fair in the Green Ranger episodes it's said that the Zords were heavely damaged, but not destroyed unlike in Zyuranger where they came back to life. Also if the Zords are alive why do they need to be piloted at all?

I wasn't completely fooled when I was a kid. I always found it odd how the lip movements of Rita doesn't match her dialogue.
The irony of MMPR is that it basically regresses Zyuranger back into a typical sentai series. Even though Zyuranger doesn't have the cultural significance of being the first of its kind in Japan, it still has its place in the franchise as a real game-changer during its time. Up until then, basically every season of Super Sentai was roughly the same: science fiction-based, the rangers were modern earthlings for the most part, the robots were basic vehicles, and their tech was either human or alien-made. Zyuranger upped the ante by taking all the concepts and introducing a fantasy element to it all, making the rangers prehistoric warriors and all of their robots are really gods. So it was really unique for Super Sentai. And Mighty Morphin Power Rangers? It takes Zyurangers concepts and reverts them back to how a typical sentai season would function, with the powers being alien technology, the rangers being basic people, and the robots just being dinosaur-shaped robots. Of course that's all probably a carry-over from Saban's original intention to adapt Bioman, but I just think its funny how they stripped everything that made Zyuranger different and still made a successful series because the concept as a whole was so new in America.
Perfect time to watch the old videos too.

I watched all the older series and I really do want to hear your thoughts on dairanger. I watched the first four episodes drunk and had a decent time but never got back to it. So I like hearing what people think, so if you continue the series I hope it goes through up that far. Linkara's videos really don't know a thing about Super Sentai and that's not the point. He also has a completely different approach so I think you can bring more to the table contrasting them despite that huge project existing already

I'd like to see more of this. Honestly I don't think you'd have to do every episode either just ones that advance the overall plot. E.g. new weapons obtained, new character introduced, something more than the monster of the week happens. Anything with Loki. (The giant evil head in the sky)

You gotta love this american adaptation of a japanese show made to sell toys that was somehow popular enough to be incredebly successful by having 50% of it's episodes contain foreign fottage and how this has somehow managed to keep on going even today. It's really something that will likely never be done again.

I love that not only did they dub footage, when they ran out of Zyuranger footage they had Toei make entirely new footage. New Monster costumes and fight scenes with the rangers and megazord costumes. This footage is called Zyu2 by fans. I wonder what the Zyuranger fans think, growing up and discovering America made entire new scenes with their series. It's like the biggest of deleted scenes for them (assuming they ignore things like the rangers acting like their Power Rangers counterpart instead of their Sentai counterpart. "Why is the Yellow Ranger acting all girly? He's a boy...named Boi")

I would love to see this series take off. Doing every episode though would be like a decade commitment in itself. Selfishly though, I'd love to see you do this with Power Rangers: In Space and the Denji Sentai
I had considering doing something like this years ago, taking every individual PR episode and comparing them to their Sentai counterpart, but the fact that I'm lazy and lack proper editing software has prevented me from doing such.
It was pretty fun. Looking forward to the rest of the series but… are you only going to do the stuff adapted from Zyuranger, or are you also going to get into the adaptation craziness when they started cobbling mixing together stuff from dairanger and kakuranger?

But if you're asking if I'm planning to incorporate such things into this new format, as an episode-by-episode analysis, probably not. In season 1, they're largely adapting the same stories. In seasons 2 and 3, Power Rangers has veered so far off, uses so much of its own footage and so little Sentai footage that the end results, from what I've seen and remember, are almost nothing alike. There'd be very little to directly compare.

Looking forward to this series since currently me and my brother have been watching episodes of Zyuranger alongside Power Rangers in order to compare and contrast the strengths and weakness of each of them (right now were on episode 8 of Zyuranger and episode 6 of Power Rangers).
In the case of comparing the first two episodes of Zyuranger as a completed episode with just the first episode of Power Rangers in knowing "Which series introduces its characters better overall?" I would still go with Power Rangers. While the first two Zyuranger episodes does well of setting up its antagonist, the characterization of the rangers should have establishing in the beginning rather than waiting in the next episode. to do so. Despite the first episode Power Rangers running at a break neck pace, it allows for the viewer to get a grasp upon who each of them are before the giant monster battle. However in the case of comparing first two episodes of Zyuranger with the first two episode of Power Rangers, Zyuranger is better, due to Saban's mishandling of the Sentai footage in "High Five" such as rewriting the space shuttle to be a time-warp device. that's molded by a spaceship.

Power Rangers was always a series in my childhood I was always off and on with sporadically. Like I always dug the Giant Robots and action for example, but everything else around it always felt...off. Like even as a 6 year old kid, I knew there was something awfully screwy with how some episodes and scenes were edited. And that's waaaay before I even knew what the word "Edit" was or even meant!
It wasn't til I got older (circa late-Middle School/early-High School) and heard that PR was basically spliced up with Super Sentai that it all made sense. While I wouldn't call myself a huge PR fan, I've always been interested in Tokusatsu as a genre and the various changes made between SS & PR, so I'd be super down to see you potentially cover the whole series and show off the many differences between the two shows!

I believe a certain tiki head has a simple explanation for that, but I think it's far too complex for us to understand.
I watched later Power Ranger seasons before MMPR (Born in 96) so when I finally DID see Day of the Dumpster (thank you Power Rangers Generations), the sword didn't feel random (since I was used to that sort of thing), but I NEVER understood why Goldar disappeared.
So disappointing when the Power Rangers don't make somebody explode.

I'm nor sure it's an apples to apples comparison as Zyuranger is much more of a fully serialized story. it wasn't trying to set up the entire backstory in a single episode.
