Mighty Morphin Zyurangers (Episode 5) - Different Drum vs. I Can See, I Can See

- A music-playing goblin creates chaos on both shows. Finally, a straight adaptation! How does this improve Mighty Morphin Power Rangers's chances of matching up to its Zyuranger counterpart? Zyuranger goes for trippy while Power Rangers tries for uplifting. Is this what we need for the '90s? Only one way to find out!

14:38 - "I'm working on a marvelous monster that eats cars and smells like a fish".
I just love how random that is and that we don't actually see this monster at all. We get to imagine what it looks like.
So an ex wife ?
@@Monstermania101 ??? I'm not sure what you mean by that.
@@landonsantini365 I am also confused
yeah loved when they did things like that always fun
@@landonsantini365 ex wives, they eat up cars like it’s pizza rolls and they smell like fish
The "physical representation" for your soul, or as you said, mind, in Japan is the heart instead of the head. Just clarifying since you seem to be a bit confused by that
Yesssss, glad to see this series is still going.
Why wouldn't it still be going?
There’re gonna be about 40 episodes if MistareFusion doesn’t die doing it.
Rather watch a sentai 📼
Zordon: "Alpha, get the power rangers. A new monster has appeared and is-"
Alpha: "Zordon, the power rangers are already tracking the monster down"
Zordon: "Oh... Well... I spy with my little eye"
🤯
Only episode in the original MMPR where the big head and robot didn’t appear.
@@asherzerbib3461 unlike Megaforce where the big head and talking robot barely appeared.
@@ch2010ize I’m guessing that the lack of Zordon and Alpha here is because it was an alternative pilot for the show that got put in at the last minute. That or there was a plan to not have them appear so much that they’d offset the character development of the team. I lean towards the former theory.
@@asherzerbib3461 it definitely wasn’t a pilot though. More likely its as MistareFusion suggested, there was no need for Zordon and Alpha for the narrative to work. Usually they ring the bell to alert the Rangers but since the episode needed the message “people with disabilities can be awesome too!!” Melissa needed to serve the function making Zordon and Alpha superfluous to the story.
Wait...I just recognised Boi's actor! He plays the kid-brother sidekick in a tokusatsu from a few years earlier, Sekai Ninja Sen Jiraiya ("World Ninja War Jiraiya")! Wild fun show, that.
(Guy had a minor role in Megaranger, too...)
So basically Japan has less actors than Britain?
@@Veela666 The toku industry sure has a comparable stable!
I love it when you add the Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64 music.
I also loved when he adds the music from the Power Rangers SNES game as well
The reason they go outside to fight is because pyrotechnists necessary for a big sentai fight scene are not safe to set off indoors. Notice how they don't use big explosives when fighting in the city? These days they solve that with CGI explosions whenever they fight inside or on the streets, which don't look too good but solve the problem.
This seems like nitpicking to me. I seriously can't comprehend why that bothers you. To me rangers jumping from place to place between cuts is a part of Power Rangers\Super Sentai charm.
I'm not bothered that they go outside to fight. I'm bothered that it's a random cut to a different location. And not just that, but it's one that actively hinders the coherency of the storytelling. Like I say, they have Dora Goblin on the ropes. They can see him. They need to act fast to capitalize on it. Instead, the show puts them into a totally different scenario for no reason, which should give Dora Goblin ample opportunity to switch his damn shoes! Considering the entire plot revolves around those shoes, I don't consider that a nitpick. That is a devastating failure of writing.
If you have to accommodate for special effects, write for it! It really wouldn't be that hard to write a reason.
@@MistareFusion who really knows just seemed like they got lazy there and decided to just go with it to end thins
@@MistareFusion zyuranger is a great and fun sentai I never take sentai seriously 😎
You know you're hooked on Mistarefusion videos if you're marathoning these Power Rangers videos and don't even care about Power Rangers lol
Zyurangers: I Can See, I Can See
Power Rangers: I Can't Hear, I Can't Hear
The white outline in Bulk's leg gap make the "All New" thing look like a speech bubble, which makes it look like Bulk is declaring this all new. And I like that a lot.
I just want to say I love all your intro jokes in this series. Gives me a smile each time.
I think Zordon knew that our deaf girl would call the Rangers to arms knowly or not...so he let it play out.
I liked the mmpr episode as it was one of those episodes that shows us that just cause someone has a disability of some kind does not mean they are helpless or useless and the importance of acceptance and understanding
💀ok that is your opinon
Zordon and Alpha were about as essential to this episode as Gosei and Tensou were to most of Megaforce.
in zyuranger what was stolen where the kids souls hence the heart shape as stolen tho in mmpr they could not do that just yet
Agreed zoeking but haven’t seen every episode of mmpr so I came here to see how the zyuranger footage was adapted 📼
1:40 It's interesting that you bring up the question about if the Power Rangers being teenagers would make a difference, and I'd assume no, since Boi and Mei from the Zyurangers are teenagers themselves (their actors were, too). Then again, the Zyurangers are only these ages physically, since they're technically millions of years old...
Yeah, I guess for the fantasy setting, 13 is considered an adult.
Also, I find it weird how supplemental material lists the Zyurangers by their physical ages while King Ranger from Ohranger is listed as being millions of years old despite having the body of a child (and not even in a "he's canonically of legal age" kind of way)
Awesome, I was not expecting the verdict!
was totally random but I can live with it makes me wonder if will happen again
Yeah, the whole mean girl not acting mean is like the authors were afraid of being mean to their characters, like they were real people or afraid of drawing ire from watch groups. What happens is we get an episode where the conflict is solved. Luckily there's other conflicts but having the not-mean girl not having to resolve an issue creates a void of drama and arguably a boring story. It's okay for the bad guy-er gal to be the bad gal. Hell it could even be a bout of emotional issues. They're kids, their emotions are going haywire at that age.
"Jimmy ate the last cookie, and I'm going to be mad all day!" Bob learns he isn't always going to have a cookie waiting for him or that he needs to learn to control his frustration, not be controlled by it. Maybe we learn Bob failed/passed a very hard test and wanted a pick me up or reward but acknowledges it still wasn't right to act out. (Ohh, a character with depth and not a silly caricature.) Apologies, forgiveness and friendship ensues. How was that? I thought of that in five minutes, of course I'm not cranking out several scripts a week or have executives breathing down my neck.
yeah you had to be careful back then
I disagree. I like that Beth (that's her name BTW) isn't a stereotypical "mean girl." That would have been a boring cliche. Instead she's written as a normal, realistic person. That's awesome.
I find it hilarious that people complain about the characters on this show being shallow, yet when we get one that is written realistically, you complain because she isn't a stereotype.
Oh Lance, you are a gift.
Green With Evil is going to be so many parts. Lol.
I'd say the same as the number of episodes should be fun
6:11- Mario Kart music!? 😆
10:07- Oh yeah. I forgot about that. LOL 😆
11:57-12:14- Kinda sounds like the DiC Dub of Sailor Moon.
Only heard the first note of Peach's Castle from Mario 64 before an ad started playing and I already knew what it was lol.
I don't know if this will ever come up in a future episode, but I've been wanting to make a comment about the diversity in the series. Obviously, the various Super Sentai teams are all played by Yamato Japanese people (even Lin in Dairanger who's supposed to be Chinese and Jiraya in Kakuranger who's played by a Japanese American). Power Rangers on the other hand, has had numerous POC as rangers that have been mostly handled very well. Yes, they did use Zack as the "hip-hop" guy, but he was also the "good with kids" guy. They did a good job of writing their diverse characters as just characters as opposed to demographic appeal characters and when you do that, no one is going to accuse your work of being "woke." Many of the characters have traits that go against stereotypes. For example, Kat was Australian but completely avoided the "Awesome Aussie" stereotype. She was instead a very sweet, girl next door type. Ditto for Aisha Campbell avoiding the "sassy black chick" stereotype. Billy became more interesting when they toned down his "white and nerdy" characteristics. In the early episodes of MMPR, they look like they're just doing "stock characters" but later in the season, they start taking what they're doing more seriously and the characters get better.
Zyuranger is a great sentai 🙂
Finster needs a Lightning collection figure.
Takumi Hashimoto (Boi) and Reiko Chiba (Mei) were 15 and 16 respectively at the time, so they weren't adults.
I have almost no memory of A Different Drum from when I was a kid. I remembered an episode with a deaf girl, but the monster stuff was just not in my memory banks. So, I don't really have much to say about this one. The fight footage is definitely... interesting lol Even after watching the Zyuranger plot, I don't really know what they were going for. People talk about PR having really bizarre filler between Day of the Dumpster and Green With Evil, but Zyuranger's filler episodes until the next big arc could be downright insane at times.
Pumped to wake up and see this video dropped!
4:59
Technically, it's the kid of the day. Season 1 was shown 5 days a week on its original air date, which is why Green With Evil was a 5-parter.
It would be hard to make today when every season is 20 episodes long.
Why would that be hard to make today?
adoring the series so far!
“Dora-Goblin” 😆
5:06....what are those kids.... doing??
they are just doing random stuff as their souls taken
omfg you made you want to watch magical mystery tour again!
Love this series
After 30 years and having seen this episode dozens of times, today I learned that Zordon and Alpha don’t appear in the episode
I can't wait for episode 6
I think they picked Dan to bond with the kid because they established in Scary Riddles that hes sort of the womanizer of the team who'd rather go on dates with girls and read comics than pay attention to his mission, and the kid was dealing with a crush, so it works pretty well in my opinion.
I get the logic from a writing standpoint. My issue is that there’s nothing in the story to put them together. They just are.
@@MistareFusion oh yeah I ge that, Zyuranger did that alot, from the Sentai I've seen in general it seems like a common lack-of-writing trope with them.

How can Zordon take a vacation to the Bahamas when he is just a head in a tube that is projecting him being trapped from another dimension?
Alpha takes the vacation and uses a movie projector and projection screen to make Zordon feel like he's there too.
Good work, Lance.

0:40 Same, don't think so either. That's another reason why I didn't like Samurai anymore, it overdid it by being 97% like Shinkenger but dumbed it down 4Kids style.

Zyuranger is better in my Opinion 😎
2:27 dance is not an un-manly thing. Alexander Godunov, who played Karl the angry henchman who was out for blood in Die Hard was in ballet before he became an actor. Also, I wonder if you saw that episode of Nickelodeon's Doug where Doug signs up for ballet for a chance to dance with Patti and discovers that the bully Roger also signed up for the ballet class.
I never claimed it was. I myself have studied ballet, modern, and tap. I was complimenting the episode for it having Billy as the only boy interesting in the class without it ever implying that he shouldn't be.
@@MistareFusion I'm not saying you did. I know what kind of person you are, I know that you like to see people who do things that go against normal societal gender expectations, but I don't think this is particularly that much of one. This was however one of the early episodes where his geeky characteristics were exaggerated (compare him here to the way he is in season 3) and it's possible that they put him there to make him look like more of a geek by putting him in the dance class with mostly girls. Billy could probably do research and come up with a retort to anyone who challenges his masculinity by pointing out a tough, manly man who was in ballet like I did.
In the episode where Tommy joins the school's football team though, Bulk tries out for the team too and there's a part of the episode where Skull convinces him to study "Ball-et" [sic] because Skull reads a book saying many football players studied ballet. Said episode has bulk wearing a tutu and does a tip-toe thing thus re-enforcing the "femmy" stereotypes of ballet (even though this plot point is about FOOTBALL PLAYERS who studied ballet).
9:30 -💘 Lovely!😄
How slow is sub growth, still not 20k subs? When I subbed to this channel five years ago it was 12K, not it's still 19K.
I certainly appreciate your enthusiasm for me to grow faster. I share that same enthusiasm and hope it gets to 20,000 by the end of the year. For the sake of my own ego, though, I have to offer this one correction because it's not quite as slow as you're saying. I was at 12,000 just a little over two years ago. Five years ago I was below 4,500. :-D

Ohh good one MistareFusion. I'm wondering if the reason for the lack of Zordon, Alpha & the different names is because it was written earlier than some other episodes. I remember a behind-the-scenes video on the DVD mentioned "No Clowing Around" was apparently the first filmed regular episode, so I'm guessing the might have been filmed and written early on as well. The turnaround for new episodes must have been insane for five eps a week! I'm wondering why this wasn't the second episode aired too? If they wanted to skip all of the powerup stuff on Fox Kids why wouldn't they air this second? Just cause of the mistake for the Power Weapon names? Either way, I look forward to these comparison vids a lot! Thank you!
could be just a random slip up or were working on ideas to see which sounded better before going with what they did
Haven't watched the video yet, but isn't this that episode with the weird faded colors?

Since MMPR starts adapting episodes out of order are you gonna use the Zyuranger episode count or MMPR count? (Like the Chimera episode being adapted after they adapted Zyuranger’s finale for their mid-season finale) ?
Really enjoy these videos btw
16:14 but you said there can only be one winner
Howling Cannon > Power Blaster. The names that Power Rangers gave to the weapons or pretty much anything were pretty bad.
Howling cannon is cool in zyuranger 🍿
Love this shit haha
If Kimberly is suppose to be a teenager, why does she have her own dance class?
I assumed they were supposed to be seniors in high school but eventually that was dropped by the time the last of the original episodes (the pre Zyu2 footage) was filmed. That said Saban and the writers had no clue what teenagers were at the time.

@@stephenholloway6893 You are correct. The two-part episode Doomsday was originally supposed to be the series finale and would have ended with the Rangers going to their school's promenade, meaning that as you say they were originally written as high school seniors.
If Melissa is deaf, then why is she taking a dance class. Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't dance classes have allot of verbal commands?
