- The Ranger teams have to fight a Frankenstein's Monster monster! A lot of the same footage but vastly different directions. One uses the iconography to carry a Halloween episode. The other uses it as an opening salvo of a multi-part storyline about clay. In other words, there's a lot around here that is amazingly, wonderfully at odds with its cultural counterpart. Who does it better? Watch to find out!

Gung Ho has always been one of my favorite episodes. Seeing Tommy pass his Dragon Shield to Jason? Just epic
I vividly remember the Frankenstein monster in MMPR; it was always such an easy costume to see through, even as a kid

To be fair to Zordon, Jason first got his sword long before Tommy joined the team, it's not like he purposely gave the sword to the member least qualified, it just so happens that somebody who was better with a sword ended up joining the team much later down the road.
Then why wouldn't Jason and Tommy mention it to Zordon after the events of this episode?
"Hey, Zordon. We noticed while sparring with each other that Tommy is the better swordsman. We know you gave Jason the sword at the start of this, but since a better swordsman is here now, maybe we should reshuffle weapons a bit so Tommy has the sword? Play to our strengths for the benefit of mission successes and all that?"

I can confirm that Gung-Ho aired before Life’s a Masquerade. In 1993, I forced my dad to record every episode of MMPR because it aired before I’d get home from school. I re watched those tapes for years! I remember thinking back then that it was weird that the stronger putties were introduced AFTER they already had the Thunder Slingers and eventually realized that the episodes were aired out of order.
The Bandora/Rita Repulsa flying in the sky on a large Ball of Red Clay is one idea I wished Bandai would have taken to make a Toy Figure of Rita flying on top of a Ball of Red Clay for their merchandise.
Or at least have a shirt of Rita Repulsa flying with a Ball of Red Clay like she was going to smash that stuff on the Power Rangers.
Would have been a fun idea for a Toy concept.
It could've been like Silly Putty with a bonus toy. And you can pretend to be finster, sculpting new monsters for Rita!
Honestly, that's the one accessory missing from the Super7 Ultimates series Rita figure.

This is definitely the weirdest monster that either Zyuranger or MMPR have ever done, and I say this with the knowledge of Dora Tortoise / Shellshock appearing in a later episode. Most of the monsters are based on mythology and fairy tales and given somewhat unique interpretations, but here we just have a character from a 19th century story in a design that's barely unique enough to not get sued by Universal. It would be like if the Rangers fought someone in a Bigfoot costume that was on loan from Harry and the Hendersons.
Well, they did fight alien bugs wearing Starship Trooper uniforms in Lost Galaxy, so...
Here's something I've noticed when it comes to MMPR: They tend to combine two-part Zyuranger episodes that they don't feel have enough usable footage for them to do two-parts (remember, they weren't brave/rich enough to film their own stuff yet). Previously, Green with Evil was the only time they had done a multi-parter and arguably, that maybe should have only been three, possibly four, parts. In this case, they could've done a pair of two-parters or a four-parter, had they wanted to. I think the big thing that stopped them was because of the Dora Franke transformation scene. Although had they done the two-parter, they still could've done the ending the way they did here. Because we know they were never going to adapt Satan's Tower for MMPR...
Gung Ho was the first episode where my parents became aware of the Power Rangers phenomenon. I was watching it on a Saturday morning when both parents happened to be home. The main things I remember were my dad commenting that the "teens" looked like adults lol and them telling me to go play upstairs, then hearing them talk about whether or not to let me keep watching the show.
One thing you forgot to mention is that in Power Rangers, Jason and Tommy needed to be told by Zordon that Titanus was actually a friend who was only attacking them to test them, while in Zyuranger, Geki and Burai are never told that. They just seem to accept that King Brachion is their ally without questioning why he was attacking them before.
I mean come on, we all knew Alpha was the mack. No wonder the second he waltzes out of the command center he's instantly the center of male and female attention alike. He's just so cute and nice and funny. I'm more shocked that the other folks at the juice bar didn't make a habit out of asking the team after him for YEARS afterwards.
I always liked the Frankenstein Monster. Shame he never had a team up episode with Pumpkin Rapper.

They made the costume for Frankie, and they had all the costumes from Zyu 2, so they had no excuse not to do it.

The Island of Illusion episodes are going to be interesting, I clearly remember there was a Power Rangers episode where each ranger had to overcome their fear or something.
Most of the episode is stock footage of past fights but there is a clear and clever scene that Power Rangers uses Bulk and Skull that will be really interesting to see if it gets Power Rangers over the line for their win.
And first time, since Green with Evil part 1, Tommy joins other Rangers in cockpit...
17:16 - I recall reading somewhere that the original draft of what became "Gung Ho!" was going to be about Jason and Tommy being assigned to do a report for school together and arguing over the right approach to do that. As exciting as the karate double-team match ended up being, it might've helped the episode's overall story if they had stuck with that. Then we'd have more time to use the footage of Squatt & Baboo putting up that white column to set up it being used to summon Lokar in the "Island of Illusion" storyline. The footage of the Rangers using the combined Ranger Slinger weapon could be reconstituted as the rangers trying (and failing) to blow up the evil pillar with Rita taunting them about how the Rangers have been losing their edge lately due these two victories she's had over them . . . "And the nastiest is yet to come!"
Jason and Tommy, having learned to work together get a good grade on their report and are proud of that. But then Zordon calls them to the Command Center to inform him that he's figured out what that pillar of Rita's was for . . . summoning Lokar, of which Zordon shows them footage of on the viewing globe, ending the episode of an ominous, uncertain note with Zordon telling the rangers that they must prepare for the very real possibility of a dark day ahead.
Don't get me wrong, I liked what we got here. I'm just trying to think of ways that the show could've made these and the next batch of episodes seem more connected while still having these episodes still feel like mostly standalone conflicts. I realize that's not how Kid's TV was done back then for the most part. I guess modern "Binge-Watching" culture has kind of spoiled me in that sense.
Still, I'm looking forward to hearing what you have to say about the end of this current storyline next month. See you guys then.
I'd say she was upset the monster lost cause she thought he might win and why would she not get upset cause maybe she got her hopes up and then crushed
I mean, yeah, Jason uses a sword more often, but it's not like Tommy knows nothing about swords. He wielded that Evil Blade for Rita, and even though he lost to Jason, it was a struggle. Not to mention in this episode we see Jason and Tommy sparring with sticks, so Jason would know how good Tommy is at swordfighting.

Plus there's the fact that every suit Tommy used afterwards would have some type of sword as its primary weapon. The only exception is Dino Thunder Black having a baton, but it's still held like a sword.
I remember when “Gung Ho” came out my cousin tricked me info thinking Titanus was Zordon’s zord and now that’s what I always think when I see it. Especially in this episode.

Both versions get one thing wrong, the monster from Mary Shelley's original novel wasn't Frankenstein. His name was actually Adam.

I’m OBSESSED with this series of videos. I grew up on MMPR, but only saw Zyranger a few years ago. You’re always totally fair to each show, so it’s always a fun surprise to see which series wins episode to episode. Keep them coming, but good luck with season 3 of MMPR lol

I believe Jason is referring to the short period of time, when Tommy had the sword of darkness.
That Frankenstein's monster costume looks so cheap and pathetic that it looks like Toei bought it at a Halloween thrift shop. It's not surprising that Saban had an easy time making a near-identical costume for their own footage.

In the UK I remember seeing Gung Ho after Masquerade because I was confused why Dora Frankie was there when he was dead.

Tommy's weapon isn't just a flute though it is a Dagger which is a really short sword and when he was evil he had a sword that he used to beat Jason in sword combat.
so Jason saying Tommy is the better Swordsman isn't that much of a leap, seeing as Tommy had been shown b4 beating Jason in Sword to Sword combat.

I enjoyed how you mentioned that this first season it's starting to get better at matching the "connected tissue" as you call it. Which really makes me wonder how you'll feel watching season 2 and season 3, if you get there anyway. But with that said later seasons of Power Rangers does an excellent job of combining the Japanese and American footage. One season I can think of an example just off the top of my head would be Power Rangers s.p.d. regardless I'm enjoying the series and I look forward to next episode thank you for the content.
Maybe he can analyze how VR Troopers connected multiple Metal Heroes!

I didn't noticed at the time that the Frankenstein Monster was still alive after the Episode where he was destroyed in Power Rangers until some UA-camr pointed it out.
I did remember the ZYURANGER written on the Dino Slingers in Power Rangers back in the days which did made me confused.

I always thought MMPR would have benefited more if they stuck keeping the episodes connected rather than separating them. They could have had a great cliff hanger by having a monster defeat them at the end of the first fight, like with what zyuranger did with dorafranken. I always thought the power rangers defeating the monster out of nowhere after losing for the whole fight was kinda lame.
That point about leaders is maybe why I like when the red ranger is less an upstanding leader and more an idiosyncratic weirdo who's dragged all these people into their orbit. Or, indeed, been dragged into theirs.

You know, I remember Emperor Grumm in Power Rangers SPD using those kinds of tactics, and actually considering himself victorious as a result.
So really, this doesn't highlight how incompetent Rita's monsters are, so much as it highlights Rita's lack of creativity and ingenuity in battle tactics. Here, she stumbled upon a winning tactic by complete accident, and - like Toriyama not realizing the thematic brilliance of his original "Goku is a saiyan outcast" plotline - had no idea she even did it, and thus had no idea that she was (as you would couch it) "gleefully backing over it with a truck."
This would explain why Rita and those in her inner circle (such as Zedd, Divatox, and the Machine Empire) always resort to the standard "monster of the day" plan: They simply lack the imagination to think of anything better.
Zedd kinda did that as well. He spent a good chunk of episodes creating monsters, whose only purpose was to force Tommy into fights so his powers could be drained.

In Beast Morphers, Commander Shaw made a rule that Rangers can't date Rangers, even though their have been Rangers Dating Rangers in the past!
I'm Assuming he's talking about the Beast Morph Rangers specifically rather than other Ranger teams.

In some ways yeah the monster was ok but at a the same time felt lazy I mean it’s mostly just a guy wearing normal cloths and stuff you can buy at most stores only things made were the gloves mask and weapons
