I just went back to a sedan (accord) after shopping for larger 2-row SUVs to replace my rogue. The value just couldn't be beat, I got a brand new sedan for the same price as a used SUV, with better gas mileage and a massive trunk (cargo space for all the baby gear was my #1 issue with the rogue). If you don't really *need* third row seating a sedan makes a lot of sense. A plus/tip for parents car shopping, my 19 mo just climbed into the sedan and got into his car seat himself, he wouldn't have been able to do that this young in an SUV.

My PHEV with a 43L (9.5 gallon) gas tank is rated to go 1000km (620 miles). I have actually gone over 900 in the real world and if I really took it easy I bet I could hit the full 1k.
I regularly do long trips and would really like an EV but nothing will match up to being able to put gas in the night before and then not having to think about gas again until I get home.
For anyone who can charge at home I think a PHEV is the best option currently for most cases. A hybrid for anyone who can't charge. Then an EV is only for people who have special circumstances or just are enthusiasts for the tech at this point.

EVs are a legitimate option for many, however, it only works for smaller group of buyers right now. You require the home based infrastructure and possibly a household with a secondary card capable of longer trips. I agree that a Hybrid and PHEV are best options for the majority.

The best km I've got on a tank of fuel in my phev is 1650km. Have a customer at work who's gone 7000km on half a tank of the fuel. I agree EVs aren't for everyone but if everyone actually took a realistic look at what they need in a car, most people could easily drive an EV.

@@stevenstewart1308 I'm talking about an actual road trip though, as in get on the highway and drive to another city. I regularly get way more than the rate 1k km if I only drive 50 clicks a day and charge every night.
What's more ridiculous is I've had oil change intervals where I'm only in my third tank of gas because the engine ran so little. I wish they would figure out a better way to track engine run time vs distance driven for the maintenance schedule.

As much as I like the idea of hybrids, I don't like having the double complexity. The big selling point of electrification to me is not having the ICE or related parts to deal with. I think solid state battery technology will be the turning point for true realistic EVs for the masses. For now, I'm absolutely loving my '24 X1 M35i.. so much fun and smooth to drive and I've been getting 32-33mpg on the highway and mid 20s in the city.

    • @billurban1581

It all depends on the engineering. I put 146,000 trouble-free miles on a 2007 Prius, 46 mpg lifetime, original brakes had 50% lining and pads remaining when sold. The biggest expense was the small battery in the trunk. Looking back from '24 that was almost 20 year old technology, obviously refined since then. Consider too that hybrid engines and related components have it easier with the battery helping propel the car. My PHEV engine, trans, and related components will have about 30,000 miles of wear when the odometer says 100,000. All in all hybrids and PHEVs are a net plus.
(Solid state? Gill Pratt, Toyota's chief scientist, says hybrids will see solid state first, cost is prohibitive for EVs.)

Hi guys, another great QC&C video!! Really enjoy this series. Can you clarify the 2025 Camry pricing? You said that the first AWD trim of the Camry is just under $38k and the base AWD Prius is just over $40.5k. But is the Camry pricing the standard "all-in" but taxes? From what I've seen elsewhere, they have the first AWD trim of the Camry with freight, PDI & fees included (as is standard now in Canadian pricing) at $41.5k
I still agree the Camry is the better choice, but just want to be sure I'm comparing apples to apples. Cheers!

Yes you are right, we used MSRP for the Camry because that was all we had, the 2025 model wasn't listed on the site yet for Canada. I got the MSRP pricing of the Camry directly from Toyota Canada at the drive event. Camry base AWD model MSRP is $37,950 CAD and with all the fees $40,932 CAD. The Prius base AWD MSRP is $37,650 CAD and with fees $40,626 CAD. You do get a few more features in the base AWD Camry like a moonroof and a big one for some is the temporary spare tire. Then hybrids, PHEVs, EVs and hydrogen vehicles are all options for consumers. There is going to be a point that production of gas models will slow, it's just the way it is. Many people are interested in hybrids and if they are part of the plan and are available to buy without long wait times, people will buy them. They are reasonably priced and deliver great fuel economy. It's really not that difficult to figure out. Consumers are sick of paying gas prices and want a break, hybrids are great for many.

There were two points made in this video that I disagree with. One was when they discussion was that all vehicles should go to hybrid by a certain date. The other, and related, was when the question was asked about a compact hybrid SUV that will last for 20 years. THAT'S my issue. I've driven all of my vehicles for 20 years or longer, upwards of 150k-200k miles. I would like to know WHAT EV battery (hybrid, plug-in hybrid or EV) will easily last 20 years without worry of replacement. Or further, will NOT lower the resale value of the vehicle in 10 years? Who would want to buy any such a used vehicle when the battery is literally a roulette wheel of chance every day it ages. And another point...who can even guarantee that a specific type of battery technology or battery pack will even be available 10-15 years down the road? And at what cost? Manufacturers can quickly "obsolete" a part when there is no profit to be made in it's manufacture.
That's why I'm looking for ICE engines ONLY. They will stand the test of time, can be far more reliable than any EV battery, and will have a much higher resale value 10, 15 and even 20 years into ownership.

While hybrids will be much less because the battery is smaller, it could have to be replaced at the 10 year mark. We just don't know what the future holds. Will we have all new battery technology and these electrified vehicles we are buying today, not even have batteries available to replace them. At this time, pure EVs are loosing 10 times the value of gas models. One of the reasons is Elon Musk, he lowered the prices of Tesla models and that has caused a huge problem in the market. There is nothing wrong with buying a gas model today and keeping it for the next 20 years. We have gas vehicles and don't plan on selling them, they are paid off and we are happy with them. i think everyone needs to do what works well for them today and if you want a hybrid, a PHEV or a pure EV, go for it but no one knows exactly when the battery will have to be replaced, how much it will cost or what the vehicle will be worth in 10 years.
