  • How do you change your oil?
In the video, I’m showing you how to change the oil on a 2006 Audi A6 with a 2.0-liter engine. When I change the oil on a customer’s vehicle, it’s usually not just draining and refill. It usually takes a complete inspection to make sure the customer is safe on the road.

For whoever is watching this, he's using the wrong oil. Factory Specs says Castrol Edge 5w40, NOT 5w30! It's on the hood tag and your oil cap literally says (Castrol) in it!. Also always fill about half of the filter housing with your new oil after replacing your filter and before installing it back. Lastly, never ever refill your brake fluid, unless you got a real problem, it's a bit low bc the pads are worn. Anyhow, he's got some of it right...

Thanks for your comment. This customer specifically asked for 5w30 since 5w40 makes the engine noisy. As far as a tag, where exactly is that tag that says 5w40? When I tried to find Audi specs for this car, all I found was that you need to use "VW 502 00" spec oil.

Thanks for that tip with the service light, ive been using a odb11 and it costs me 10 credits each time! All I had to do was hold the spanner butter and hit the 0s. Brilliant!

You don't just "top off" your brake fluid.
If it's just slightly low, just leave it. Some of it gets drawn into the calipers as the brakes wear and the piston moves out further. And it will return to the reservoir when you reset the piston to replace the pads. If you top it off in between you'll overflow your reservoir with the next brakejob.
If it's severely low there is a leak that needs fixing.
Also normally you just replace an air-filter. The one in the video looks like a reusable K&N unit, but the stock filters just get replaced.
And your powersteering being low should also make you suspicious. It is a closed system and shouldn't lose any meaningful amount. Of course if it's the first time in 10 years you take a look it might be slightly low, but if you have to regularly add fluid there is a bad seal and you have to replace it.
Your drainplug has a specified torque it is supposed to be tightened to. With those weak aluminum oil-pans I would suggest using a torquewrench. They strip out way to easy.
The old-school filter-tool on the plastic filter-housing is kind of dangerous as well. If you damage one of those old can-style filters you just throw it away, but this housing needs to go back onto the car.
I would also suggest under-filling the engine oil by 250-500 mL. It's much easier to just pour another gulp of oil in than it is to drain some if you accidentally put in to much.
The oil-level should be checked with the engine at operating temperature, normally it doesn't make a huge difference, but something to keep in mind.

Hello, thank you for this really detailed video, without you I would have had no clue at all. I have changed to oil according to this video, but my issue is that a bit of oil is dripping when my car is parked, about 2-3 medium sized drops over 8 hours, which seems to get less every time, I also checked that the oil is full. The thing is, the cap for the oil filter was extremely tight and we had remove it with two hands, filter has been changed which looked a bit different than the original one, but that should not cause the leak (or does it?). We have also put oil on the sealing for the oil filter cap and then screwed it in just like you did, the little hanging plastic thing that should supposed to be at the tip of the oil filter cap has not been attached though, but this does not seem to be necessary. Do you think the thread might be loose and the cause of the oil dripping? It's definitly dripping from that area. Thank you in advance, I hope you can help me.

This depends on market and audi model. In my country recommendation is 5W30 for this car. Tough if you know about oil viscosity, 5W40 is superior to 5W30. When coldstarting they are the same, they both act same as a SAE5 oil. When engine is hot and oil also 40 oil is thicker than 30 oil The second number tells the hot viscosity. So if you live in a cold country it doesn't really matter, but if you live in a hot place 40 oil will be better, especially with a turbocharged engine. It will protect the engine better in hot conditions. This is to accoount for normal driving.
If we go to a race track you shouldn't use either of these oils, but maybe this is not the most reasonable discussion with a stock looking car. On a track you would probabaly use 5W50 or 10W60.
