Thanks for this. I've referenced your channel on several jobs on mine and my daughters B7's. Just finished this housing replacement on mine, I dropped one of the 10mm nuts for that connector bracket and never found it, really hoping that doesn't bite me. I appreciate your videos!!!!
I viewed several videos and read some DIYs and this video has the most efficient repair. There are some others where they are disconnecting all sorts of stuff that I didn't need to do. A few comments on this video. • Take a few photos or a movie of the layout -- you'll forget some of the bracket orientations • Disconnect battery (or make sure to cover alternator cable end when you disconnect it) • Drain oil once you are sure you are going through with job. Leave plug out because you will spill coolant into oil ports and you want it to come out • No need to pre-drain coolant -- just accept that you'll lose about a gallon when you pull the cooler off. • No need to remove line on oil cooler • Throttle body is easy to take off if you need to -- but not necessary. I didn't take it off but it might have helped with visibility. • You might be able to work with the rigid plastic line in place -- mine was a pain to remove but I got it off (and broke some locking tabs) • A screwdriver can be used to gently tap the electrical connectors out of the bracket. • Add a touch of grease when you slide those connectors back in that bracket • Disconnect alternator cable • No need to disconnect anything on coolant resevoir -- just place it out of way. Clamp off hose prior to pulling oil cooler • Where needed, cover air intakes/hoses to avoid dropping something in there. • Take your time with the blind hex-head bolts and make sure not to strip them • Once you have the old parts off coolant will continue to drip slowly, probably because the clamp on the reservoir hose is not perfect -- you'll want to go ahead and get the new parts on to stop the dripping • Might as well replace the oil sender as it's cheap and easy to do. Tools you may not have • Triple-square socket set • Long hex sockets • Magnet on a handle -- helps grab some bolts you can barely touch • Mirror • Wobble extension and short hex socket (helped me with the filter housing top right bolt) • Something to catch the coolant that is going to splash everywhere. I put some painters plastic in a low, wide cardboard box and placed my drip tray inside of that. • Coolant is poisonous in small quantities and your dog may lap it up -- be careful. • Plenty of degreaser -- may as well clean up all the gunk when you have the parts out, plus the bottom of the engine so you can make sure you've fixed the problem. • Torque wrench. 11 ft-lb is what the housing and cooler get re-installed with.
I too refrained from draining the coolant and disconnecting the oil cooler coolant line. I lost barely a cup of coolant in total although I did clamp the feed hose from the reservoir, which probably helped. I also had trouble removing the electrical plugs from the bracket, and of course, that hose to the PCV is never easy to disconnect. Thanks for the torque settings too although I'd finished the job before I read this and just relied on 40+ years of experience to gauge the feel 😉
Did you use the plastic or aluminum replacement housing? I see they make an aluminum one and i like metal better than plastic. Especially aluminum since it cools faster. Thoughts?
Doing this to my beloved B7 now, I really appreciate the simple walkthrough with tools used. It's so helpful with setting up and reducing problems during the repair.
Nice one! Made the job a lot easier following this guide. There were a couple of things I did differently and even like not draining the coolant or disconnection the coolant hose from the oil cooler. Also, the configuration of brackets seemed a little different on my 2006 Audi A4 B7 Quattro... the bracket you needed to remove for the last screw, the one with the triple-square, actually had a second triple-square screw further back. However, I managed to get away with loosening the second screw and pivoting it down out of the way rather than removing it. Getting the old housing out, and more so, getting the new one in was a puzzle and I was worried I might dislodge the gasket. However, all went back together okay and no more leaks.
I recently came across a few videos of yours after buying my daughter a 06 A4 2 0T. I really enjoy your work. We have very similar work styles; cleaning components, logical order of repair, and even tools used. Keep up the good work.
Great quality video on the procedure. Thanks again for your detailed explanations. The cinematography has good camera angles and lighting. I was able to successfully do this on my B7 A4 following your video.

EXCELLENT VIDEO! I searched about a dozen other vids, but your video was the best, and had the EASIEST, and most efficient methods! Anyone with some patience, basic knowledge of how to use tools, so as to avoid stripping hardware or breaking important components, and using the SAME TOOLS as you used, in the order shown, should be able to do this job. Although I was able to skip a couple of your steps - my decision due to lack of certain tools/equipment/patience - it STILL took ME a little bit longer, mostly 'cause I didn't have ALL the long hex tools. One quick trip to the nearby Home Depot and $25 later, that was taken care of. Also, someone lost my 3-ton jack handle, but some clever DIY maneuvering got the job done. I tried the jack that comes with my car, but it seemed too flimsy, and as clumsy as I am, my mind went overboard with possibilities as to how I might kick that sucker over and have the car squash my head or leg, kneecap, etc. I look forward to seeking out your other videos on other Audi/VW repairs! I have ONE QUESTION, if I may: Is it a sign of this part needing replacement if the motor oil comes out milky-ish, like a YooHoo? Excellent video. Thanks. Going to do this soon. Creamy sludge leaked in to cooling fluid tank and drive D position not engaged at all. Revers gear works fine. A mech. suggested oil cooler should be replaced and both transmission and cooling systems should be flushed. Any advice on this please?
Much respect! How did creamy sludge leaked into the cooling tank? That milky substance is usually because coolant and oil has mixed. The car not going into drive, that's a different problem. You need to figure what causing oil and coolant to mix, hopefully it's not a blown head gasket. Yea, you'll need to flush the cooling system, the oil cooler might get clogged depending on how bad the milky substance is.

nice vid, you have been of great help to me with various issues on my a4 - hey do know what I should do now that I discovered my car ate my cam follower ? is this replacement necessary ? or just drop the oil pan and clean it ? halp! thanks !
I really don't like working on my B7 2.0T, it's so much work changing anything. Even just opening the oil sump is complicated. on any other car, I owned I just take out the bolts to the oil sump and pull it straight out, here I need to lose the subframe, etc etc. bruh. Nice video though, it helps me understand where the exact location of the oil pressure sensor is.
I've seen other videos on changing the oil filter. I've been wanting to do it myself. While you most detailed, this is also the most complicated for doing a simple oil filter change.
This is not simply an oil filter change, this is replacing the entire unit that houses the filter which is made of plastic and generally cracks and leaks.
Hey. I am about to purchase an Audi A4 B7 2008 model and the owner is saying it has a small oil leak. Is it something I should worry about or the problem can easily be fixed. Kindly guide and if it can be fixed I need some pointers. Thank you and I appreciate you making such videos. They are very informative and helpful. Waiting to hear from you.
Thank you for the great video. I replaced my oil filter housing, installed everything back together and now my car cranks but won’t turn over? What could be the problem?
please cuold you repaire the steering pimp or steering blender and the hoses? I have an oil leak and i dont know how to fix it thanks mi name is dieter kiev
Does the A4 and A6 have the same type of engine? I have a Audi A6 2.0 TFSI and it looks similar. Workshop wants $2000 to fix it, but parts is only $350. Looks like it would be possible to make yourself.
Fyi there is a coolant drain plug on the bottom of the radiator. It takes a bit longer but with a rubber hose you make absolutely 0 mess when draining the coolant
@@kimimaro7z I recommend changing the entire housing. Sometimes the leak is caused by a cracked housing, but you won't be able to tell until you remove it. Also, I've replaced just the gasket already and it still leaked again.
Note to others. Hard to find that long hex socket, recommend the one form the link. However, is it 5.5? Also stay away from round head “ball” hex tools. The worst. Lastly, a reminder to not over tighten that oil filter. If you think about it. All that pressure and effort to remove, what started my leaking woes to begin i believe. Then again, old car haha.
what started with a simple oil change on my 06 A4 a month ago and tightened down the canister first by hand, the thing started leaking.... canister wasnt all the way tight, tightened it 100% with the socket and wrench..... still leaks now. smh lol

Nice video though, it helps me understand where the exact location of the oil pressure sensor is.
Low oil pressure problem huh
I've seen other videos on changing the oil filter. I've been wanting to do it myself. While you most detailed, this is also the most complicated for doing a simple oil filter change.
This is not simply an oil filter change, this is replacing the entire unit that houses the filter which is made of plastic and generally cracks and leaks.
I need to do this in Audi TT 2008 . Any tips or just dive into it.
Make sure you have all the necessary tools, otherwise you should be good to go 👍🏽
Excellent video!
Much respect!
I need a new 5mm triple Square bolt do you have a link to where I can find one I ruined it trying to get it out
yes
Thank you for the great video. I replaced my oil filter housing, installed everything back together and now my car cranks but won’t turn over? What could be the problem?
That replacement shouldn't cause the car to not start. Got over your work and make sure is connected, did you check the fuses?
Which accessories manufacturer can I use? Did you install an original Audi spare part?
Greetings
please cuold you repaire the steering pimp or steering blender and the hoses? I have an oil leak and i dont know how to fix it thanks mi name is dieter kiev
You're the best, if you change your pcv on your V6 Passat please let me know.
Thanks! Yea, I'm actually preparing to make a video about the PCV on the Passat, look out for it.
Was very helpful thanks
Thanks for watching!
Nice 👍 as usual. What’s the best tool to clear the “check engine light” and check diagnostic codes? What do you use or recommend? Thanks 🙏
Thanks! Get a VAG scanner that can also scan ABS and Airbags. I have a few hand held scanners and I also have VCDS.
Thank you!
I’ve replaced it on my 2007 GLI, and it was a pain and took a couple of hours to replace.
Yea, this replacement can be annoying. Especially if you don't have the right tools.
How do you remove that plastic hose from the top of the filter housing? It looks like you used 3 screwdrivers?
Yea, I did. That hose is a pain to get off and it's brittle, so you gotta be careful.
Great video! Thank you!
What is your estimate of how long this takes?
Much respect! Probably around 2 hours.
did you replace gaskets?
Yes, I did.
Excellent! Thank you!
Much respect!
Only question I have is can you fix mine now 😂? Cool video
what coolant do you recommend to put in?
g12
Does the A4 and A6 have the same type of engine? I have a Audi A6 2.0 TFSI and it looks similar. Workshop wants $2000 to fix it, but parts is only $350. Looks like it would be possible to make yourself.
Fyi there is a coolant drain plug on the bottom of the radiator. It takes a bit longer but with a rubber hose you make absolutely 0 mess when draining the coolant
Dude how do you get that thing to work?!? I turned the drain plug part and nothing comes out
Perfect Video
this could be the main cause of oil loss? Great video 📷
Yea, if it's leaking it will get worse over time. Thanks for watching!
@@CraftyWorkshopBuilds Do you recommend changing the whole piece or is it enough with the gaskets? thanks
@@kimimaro7z I recommend changing the entire housing. Sometimes the leak is caused by a cracked housing, but you won't be able to tell until you remove it. Also, I've replaced just the gasket already and it still leaked again.
@@CraftyWorkshopBuilds thanks for the help
What bolt was that for bleeding the cooling system?
It's a bolt on the coolant pipe, you can loosen the bolt to help to bleed air from the system.
@@CraftyWorkshopBuilds Thank you, sir.
@@CraftyWorkshopBuilds so loosen the bolt, than turn on the car and let it iddle for how long or how lobg until i tighten the bolt again?
@@dannyzamudio1252 yes
Puedo reparar la fuga con algún producto ? Para no sacar todo eso?
When this failure occurs, can coolant and oil mix?
Yes, it's possible.
Thanks for the reply.
Great videos!! Glad I found you......
Thanks! I'm happy you're getting value from my videos.
Can you please also make a video about how to replace the rear main seal? Thank you.
If I get the chance I'll definitely do a video.
I did the whole job and nothing leaks but now the car idles horribly and I don’t know what I did wrong please help
What happened
Note to others. Hard to find that long hex socket, recommend the one form the link. However, is it 5.5? Also stay away from round head “ball” hex tools. The worst. Lastly, a reminder to not over tighten that oil filter. If you think about it. All that pressure and effort to remove, what started my leaking woes to begin i believe. Then again, old car haha.
Those long hex sockets are at Harbor freight for anyone in the usa
@@snoopy5736 Thanx brother
What are the torque specs for the housing assembly and the oil cooler?
I forgot the exact torque specs. I've done the replacement multiple times, so I now tighten by hand.
15nm
Thanx sir
Much respect
what started with a simple oil change on my 06 A4 a month ago and tightened down the canister first by hand, the thing started leaking.... canister wasnt all the way tight, tightened it 100% with the socket and wrench..... still leaks now. smh lol
Did you replace the entire oil filter housing?
My A4 burns a lot of oil could this be the problem?
Burning oil is a different issue, but if your oil level is always going low and you notice oil spots under the car, then yea.
Is this the same as a audi 1.8 t 2005?
Nah, not the same.
@@CraftyWorkshopBuilds is this the same for 2011
What is your reason for changing the oil housing rather than just replacing the gasket?
I replaced the gasket twice and it still leaked again shortly after.
@@CraftyWorkshopBuilds Great angles and great video! Keep up the great the work!
Much respect!
Can this be a cause of oil leak?!
Yes, it's a common cause of oil leak. Worn gasket or a cracked housing can cause oil to leak.
@@CraftyWorkshopBuilds my car has been leaving trails of oil I put more and now it spills it right away I’ve checked where it’s coming out from and it’s coming out from the back of oil filter I’ve changed the sensor thinking it was my prob:
@@miklo9568 yea, that's definitely a sign that the oil filter housing is the problem.
